Playground in time for holidays

By Marian SAMPSON PLAY is on the agenda at the new Boat Harbour children’s playground.

Over one hundred community members form the Boat Harbour Village Collective which raised grant money and fundraised to create a playground which inspires creative play.

In total $66,000 worth of work has gone into the playground with $30,000 from the Community Building Partnership Program 2015, with additional funds coming from Council, and through community fundraising.

One key objective of the playground is to ensure that the play space complements the natural environment, and enhances the site.

She believes a master plan for the site is needed with pathways, landscaping and stairs to the playground and beach areas, making the site safer and more accessible.

“I would encourage other community groups to apply for funding and to approach Council to let them know what their community needs are,” she said.

The playground challenges children; they have to discover how to use components like the totem poles.

Port Stephens Member of Parliament Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “This is a wonderful achievement; I would like to personally thank the ladies who volunteered to make this wonderful space for the community,” she said.

Councillor Chris Doohan was impressed with the outcome. “It’s a ripper!” he said.

Incoming Central Ward Councillor Sarah Smith told News Of The Area, “It’s a great facility for our kids and visitors, it makes Boat Harbour a destination for families.”

Both Councillors Doohan and Smith listened to the community about issues surrounding the site including the need for repairs to the barbecue and the safe access for residents through the site.

Unfortunately, Lisa’s boat suffered a de-masting and she had to sail into Cape Town, South Africa for 8 weeks of repairs.

Her adventure is still an amazing feat of bravery, ingenuity and downright grit.

Lisa has only been sailing for 10 years, so this is a remarkable achievement.

Fire Danger Season Starts

■ They are under the direct control of a responsible adult.

■ The ground around a barbecue is cleared for two metres of all material which could burn.

■ You have an immediate and continuous supply of water available.

THE NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is reminding Port Stephens LGA residents that fire permits are required during the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period.

NSW RFS Inspector Martin Siemsen said hotter and drier conditions mean fires are more likely to start and spread quickly during the Bush Fire Danger Period, which officially begins on 1 October 2017.

THE fifth annual Blessing of the Animals is taking place on Monday 2 October, 4pm at All Saints Anglican Church, 169 Gan Gan Road, Anna Bay. Animal lovers and pet owners are invited to bring their pet to the church for a complimentary blessing by Pastor Kesh and his team.

All pets receive a pet blessing certificate and a short service will be followed by refreshments for our human friends.

Come and celebrate God’s goodness and creation, honouring the pets who enrich our lives with their affection and unconditional love.

Animal blessing ceremonies to honour our pets are often held near the Feast of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October.

St. Francis, born in the 12th century, is remembered for his love for animals and nature.

If you are unable to bring your pet, please bring a photograph or special memory item and receive a blessing.

New tenner hits town

THE new $5 note has a friend, with the rollout of the new $10 note this week from the Reserve Bank of Australia.

The cockatoo and the bramble wattle are splashed on this edition of the ten.

For the vision impaired, two bumps on the bottom edge of the note will be an identifying aid.

The tenner pays tribute to two famous Australian writers Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson and Dame Mary Gilmore.

Banjo Paterson (18641941) was a writer, poet, journalist and horseman.

His most well-known work is the Man from Snowy River.

To help beef up the note’s security, an excerpt of the Man from Snowy River is in microprint on the note.

Dame Mary Gilmore (1865-1962) is featured on the other side.

She was also a poet and journalist, as well as a campaigner against injustice and deprivation.

Dame Gilmore founded the Fellowship of Australian Writers, and during the Second World War, she

spurred on Australian soldiers with a call to patriotism in the poem ‘No Foe Shall Gather Our Harvest’.

This poem is also featured in microprint on the note.

It is hoped people will have little luck counterfeiting this $10 note, as it comes designed with security features that are worldleading, merging security with design and art.

When the new $5 note was unveiled, a chorus of complaints was heard across the continent.

Not only were the colourful notes considered ugly, but they couldn’t be recognised in some vending machines and old pokies machines.

The RBA says it has been in contact with cash handlers and machine manufacturers to make sure the new notes are recognised by cash scanning machines from dayone of circulation.

For instance, businesses with cash-handling machines were given six months’ notice and production-quality banknotes to update their wares.

A simple blood test once a year which measures your PSA level is one way to start your detection program.

A family history of prostate cancer is also a key indicator for early testing as it has been shown that if your father or other direct blood male relations have had this cancer it increases your possibility to have it as well.

SEPTEMBER is Prostate Cancer Awareness (PSA) Month and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is asking Australia to get involved and help create awareness and raise the much-needed funds to help in the fight against prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Australia with 20,000 men diagnosed and close to 3,300 deaths each year.

Many men do not realise more men die each year due to prostate cancer than women do of breast cancer.

Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group is your local support group

for men who are having or have had treatment for prostate cancer.

The group meets at the Nelson Bay Golf Club on the third Monday of each month at 5.30pm.

We welcome everyone who would like to join this great group of people.

Iain Woodhill, President of Tomaree Prostate Cancer Support Group, said, “Many men do not realise that the test for this type of cancer is by way of a blood test and if we can get men to have an annual blood test, their PSA level can be recorded and referred to for future reference.”

Early detection of prostate cancer can be the greatest way of managing this cancer and to the future quality of that person’s life.

However sometimes finding the time for a day trip and arranging for a designated driver can be a bit of a hassle.

Members of the Fingal Bay Probus Club were delighted when, a few years ago, Ross Jennings introduced Wine Appreciation as a part of the fellowship, friendship and fun they enjoy.

ACTION aplenty on the waterways recently saw Marine Rescue units from Lake Macquarie, Nelson Bay and Lemon Tree Passage unite to hone their skills.

This they did this in tandem with water police in a mock rescue/recovery exercise in the waters off the Port.

The kids love the new playground, are improving their physical and mental strength daily.

Mr Freeman said, “I speak on behalf of everyone here at school, we are so grateful for the hard work and determination of our P&C and the incredible support we receive from the community.”

New Playground Equipment

A FUND-raising program by Anna Bay Public School and their dynamic Parents and Citizens (P&C) association, has resulted in the construction of a playground for the children in Years 3 to 6 that should last 20 years or more.

This is the second playground that has been constructed over the last three years with funding for this construction coming from major sponsors including a Federal Government grant through Meryl Swanson MP, Nelson Bay Rotary, Anna Bay Fishing Club, Soldiers Point Bowling Club, Soldiers Point Lions Club, Salamander Bay Recycling Centre, The Action Club and Mayor Bruce MacKenzie on behalf of Port Stephens Council.

The remaining funds were raised through a fete and variety of fundraising ventures on behalf of the P&C and donations from our supportive community.

Renee Thompson, P&C member told News Of The Area, “We would like to thank

a great opportunity to enjoy some splendid Hunter wines without the worry of driving home from the Valley.

“Many of the members also enjoy cakes, coffee and tea before the meeting ends and we head for home in the more than capable hands of the Café’s Lexie,” she said.

End of An Era

GEOFF Packett was fondly known as the old guy on the mobility scooter, who at times had colourful language, a heart of gold and who would help people where he could.

He sadly passed away on Thursday 14 September.

Old Salamander residents remember Geoff for his helpful nature and character.

Jai Pyke from McCauley’s Bottle shop, told News Of The Area, “Geoff was a comical,

colourful, character for sure, a regular here buying slabs of beer for the ‘ambos’ and ‘firies’ as a way of saying thanks for their help.”

A Wanda Beach Pharmacy spokesperson said, “Geoff was a generous man, he helped people less fortunate, he would buy the ladies here a rose on a regular basis, which was really touching.”

The staff at Salamander Bay Village Florists said, “He frequently visited us to buy roses for special people,

he was well known for his colourful language and at Christmas allowed us to pick holly from his tree.”

The staff from Bakers Le Vie, said, “Geoff always had a joke to tell, usually dirty, bought us all roses, which was very sweet of him, as a way to say thank you for always going out to serve him.

He will definitely be missed”.

Staff at Soldiers Point Medical Centre, shared, “Rest In peace Geoff, you will be well remembered by the doctors, nurses and staff here, you were always polite and pleasant to all. Our staff loved

the way you used to spoil them with a single red rose.

Geoff you always brightened our day and we wanted to say you will be sadly missed.

Thank you for making our lives richer.”

The service will be on Friday 29 September, 11am at Boots Funerals, Johnson Close, Raymond Terrace.

TOMAREE Peninsula Photography Club is holding their annual exhibition at Soldiers Point Bowling Club on 30 September and 1 October from 9am to 5pm.

The club has approximately 30 members and they will be displaying their best seven to eight photos in a range of categories.

Entry to the exhibition is free and everyone is welcome to enjoy the spectacular photos.

Bob Ritchie, a member of the Tomaree Peninsula Photography Club said that “new members are always welcome” and there will be many opportunities for budding photographers to talk to current members at the event.

Auxiliary Takes to the Catwalk

TOMAREE Hospital Auxiliary are holding their annual fashion show on Friday 20 October.

The show’s time is 10.30am for a 11am start and will be held at the Senior Citizens Hall, Norburn Avenue in Nelson Bay. This group of generous-spirited volunteers will be modelling affordable daywear in order to raise much needed funds for equipment at the emergency department.

My wife has invited my new boss and his fiancé around for dinner. This is a lovely gesture, but she’s a terrible cook. She can burn water. She can stuff up Cornflakes. Now she’s planning a three-course meal.

I’ll never get a promotion.

Mr TY, Medowie There’s a saying about mixing business and pleasure.

What is it? I would look it up but I am still waiting for NBN service after three months.

If anyone out there would like to write to Jasminda about NBN service, go ahead; make my day.

Now, back to you, Mr TY. Forget the three-course meal. That is a disaster waiting to happen. I once tried to cook a three-course meal for some new Korean friends.

I also tried to cook Korean cuisine.

Not only did I never see them again, but they actually left the neighbourhood in the dark of night, with not so much as a forwarding number.

There’s only one solution and that’s to serve fondue.

It’s basically two of the most divine things on earth mixed into a pot – cheese and alcohol.

It was big in the 70s and, quite frankly, I can’t understand why it went out of fashion.

It is also a very hands-on meal, so it may be an opportunity to showcase your employability skills.

What would you do, for example, if your boss’s fiancé did not realise that she had a bit of melted cheese stuck to her cheek?

How would you respond if the fondue flame set the tablecloth on fire?

There’s a bit of good old Connie Confidence required in that moment.

Or how about when your wife accidentally drops her crusty bread into the seductively erupting cheese and then leans over and displays some Gabby Get Along, leaning in for a kiss from the person on her left, which happens to be your new boss.

This is, I should add, customary fondue etiquette – see page 56 titled ‘The Unexpected Delights of Dropping Your Crouton’ in the 1970s Fondue Guide (it was, Mr TY, a free-loving decade).

I hope I’ve been helpful. Let me know how it all goes.

50 years on, still going strong NELSON Bay’s VIEW Club celebrated its 50th birthday in style at a ‘gold themed’ luncheon at the Soldiers Point Bowling Club.

There was champagne on arrival and plenty of reminiscing while attendees were serenaded by the talented pianist David Scrogie.

The Nelson Bay VIEW Club Committee was delighted with the response to the Anniversary function, with representatives from Cessnock, Stockton, Myall Lakes, Maitland, Tilligerry and Raymond Terrace VIEW

and coal; greater than tourism and agricultural products.

Pat Gibson, president of the Nelson Bay VIEW Club told News Of The Area, “VIEW Clubs embrace UON’s philosophy that, if prospective students, regardless of their background have the ability and desire, they should have access to higher education.”

The Nelson Bay View Club has supported students that are disadvantaged for many years.

“The informative talk and the joyful, friendly party, resulted in a memorable celebration of the significant milestone in Nelson Bay VIEW Club’s history,” she said.

Anne-Louise O’Connor spoke on the success of mentoring and of the “Joy Spreaders” gift programs for disadvantaged children which the VIEW Club supports.

A 50 year pin was presented to Lee Clarke, the inaugural President of the Nelson Bay VIEW Club which had just 14 members.

LOCAL Port Stephens Business Woman Alicia Cameron is on a mission to change the world by participating in the Hunger Project and Business Chicks 2018 Senegal Immersion Trip.

Alicia and 20 other passionate Australian business women will travel to Senegal to mentor and support local women to rise above poverty.

To participate in the Hunger Project Alicia first had to go through a competitive application and interview program and raise a minimum of $10,000 for the program’s delivery.

This week at a function at Little Beach Boathouse, Alicia surpassed her initial goal of $10,000.

Alicia Cameron told News Of The Area, “Every cent raised for the program will go to supporting the women of Senegal.”

She believes that through supporting women in poverty stricken communities you can break the cycle of poverty.

“I am overwhelmed by the support and very grateful to the community for helping me to participate in the Hunger Project,” she said.

Alicia’s fundraising has not stopped and there will be a business breakfast held to raise more funds on 22 November, and she

is also offering business mentoring sessions.

As a part of the trip that Alicia will undertake to Africa in February 2018, she will visit the school of St Jude in Arusha, Tanzania which is managed by Rotary and provides education to around 1800 young people in Africa.

All funds raised for the The Hunger Project are tax deductible and will go to assist women in the developing nation of Senegal.

Alicia is paying her own way to participate in the project.

Going Potty for Bonsai

By Marian SAMPSON IT’S fitting that the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre feature artist Gill Wards’ pottery works are being exhibited at the same time as their Bonsai exhibition.

After all a Bonsai is shaped and fitted to the pot chosen for it.

The two exhibitions will be held concurrently with National Gardening Week with the centre’s gardens open on Sunday 8 October.

Gill Ward is a multitalented artist who enjoys participating in many of the groups within the Community Art Centre.

For English born Gill, art has been a passion since she was 11 years old.

In her early career she attended Leicester College of Art to Study Foundation and Leisurewear design.

At 19, she gained a City and Guilds Diploma, which qualified her to become a designer.

In 1973 her career with Berlei brought her to Sydney.

Nine years later she moved to Port Stephens where she resumed painting.

Her paintings are mainly in acrylics, watercolour, and pen and ink.

She has won over 100 prizes and commendations, including three prizes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Most recently Gill has taken up making hand built pottery and incorporating paintings of animals, birds and flowers.

She also makes handmade cards, magnets and signed prints.

Gill Ward told News Of The Area, “I love to be creative and hand building pottery gives me plenty of challenges to achieve my design goals.”

Gill believes that her background in fashion design has been invaluable to her artistic works.

“Being able to hand build pottery and then paint my designs on the pieces is something which I am enjoying greatly,” she said.

The potter’s barn at the Port Stephens Community Art Centre has first class facilities including several kilns and wheels.

Anyone interested in taking part in the pottery group can contact the centre.

Where did the toys go?

FINN Hollis, Salamander Bay, is a generous and giving six-year-old boy.

After hearing about a friend setting up a toy box to leave at the beach for other kids and families to enjoy, Finn decided he would like to do the same.

With help from his three-year-old sister, Ruby, a milk crate of beach toys was created, with a note saying who had left them.

Finn and Ruby’s mum, Natalie Finn said, “A friend recently shared a post from a family who had enjoyed the toys. It read, “Thank you Finn and Ruby, whoever you are.”

Imagine, then, this young boy’s disappointment when visiting his box to find that it was empty, with the toys and the message removed.

Natalie told News Of The Area, “At first he was disappointed his toys were gone, but it ended up being a positive experience as we were able to talk compassionately and with forgiveness for the person that took them.”

“We decided that maybe they were a child who didn’t have many toys and that they were now able to enjoy playing with some really great toys,” she said.

“We also talked about the post I put on Facebook

Finn is very proud that others think good things about him.

“He is also quite excited about the fact that other people want to help make another box, and that we might even be able to make a few boxes to place at lots of beaches,” she said.

Exciting bird discovery School Holiday

EXCITING times for bird watchers in the Port Stephens & Myall River area.

Dedicated twitcher Neil Fraser received a surprise when he visited the sand spit at Winda Woppa last week to check the site for the Little Tern.

What he discovered was a Pied Oystercatcher nest with two highly camouflaged eggs and their parents keeping guard close by.

“This is a significant discovery for Port Stephens,” Neil said.

“While around 150 Pied

Oystercatchers are known to live here year round, there are no previous records of successful breeding in the Bay.” The Pied Oystercatcher was classified endangered in 2008, with fewer than 200 breeding pairs in NSW. “If this pair can successfully raise a chick it will help establish Port Stephens as one of the key sites for the species’ survival in NSW,” Neil said.

THE challenge of what to do over the school holidays is back, with parents on the hunt for things to occupy their children in the school break.

Of course with so many natural assets on our doorstep, the obvious choices are the beaches, with their sand surf and sun.

For stronger swimmers try snorkelling at Fly Point and see the coral reef.

You may be lucky enough to spot a turtle, some of our local sea slugs or even a seahorse.

The region is also blessed with the amazing sand dunes which can be accessed at Birubi Point.

A walk along the dunes or tobogganing down the slopes is a great way to spend a day.

Try climbing Tomaree Headland or take a walk through Wanda Mambo Wetlands.

Visit the labyrinth at Boat Harbour and explore the rocky headlands.

The all new playground and fort at Boat Harbour beach is just one of the playgrounds in Port Stephens which will occupy youngsters with positive play.

Grab the bikes and check out Port Stephens’ cycle ways, and ride along the Bay’s shores.

He believes that with a bit of thought most locals can find somewhere to explore during the holidays, and that explains why so many visitors come to the Bay for their annual recreational stay.

“We have such a wonderful environment, it’s great for fishing, swimming and getting out into the great outdoors,” he said.

By Geoff WALKER LONG time residents would have noticed a bloke with a camera weaving in and out of crowds at our Anzac Day services; the Motorama and other public events snapping candid shots here and there.

A Vietnam veteran, John Head has turned his hand to photography over the past ten years to record the life and times of local residents.

These images, he has passed on to the Raymond Terrace Historical Society for preservation.

Currently, he is working on a project which he hopes will end up as a public exhibition which could, in turn, raise diabetes awareness.

This disease is mushrooming with society’s poor diet, lack of exercise and obesity.

It is very much on the increase in the next generation of children.

John has invited a broad range of people to pose for him holding items which reflect their character or interests.

That’s not all: he includes himself in the photo-shoot

sitting beside the subject with one leg of his [John’s] trousers rolled up and the skin painted black!

A black leg is one of the lesser effects of diabetes.

New Book to Expand History

By Geoff WALKER PORT Stephens Family History Society is in the early stages of research for its latest book.

It’s a makeover of the original ‘A History of the Tilligerry Peninsula’ and is more family focused on those settlers who took up land in and around the upper reaches of Tilligerry Creek from the 1850s onwards.

The first imprint (1996) of some 600 copies sold out quickly and the second edition of 500 are all but gone.

The third edition will be larger, more comprehensive and will include additional information which has come to light in the interim.

THE Business Connect Bus will be visiting the Tomaree Peninsula, at Salamander Bay on Tuesday 3 October.

Travelling around NSW, the Business Connect Bus brings the free services of accredited business advisors direct to regional centres.

Off the back of the recent success of the Raymond Terrace visit, Council’s Economic Development Coordinator Jane Perrin says the Business Connect Bus is a great opportunity for existing businesses, entrepreneurs and up-and-coming new business venture owners to link in with a qualified business advisor.

“Working in partnership with Salamander Bay Square, The Business Centre Newcastle Region and the NSW Department of Industry, allows us to provide the business community with free business advisory services,” she said.

THE story of Grace and Hyacinth is a story of adventure, fun and coffee.

Hyacinth is a 15ft viscount of 1978 vintage, who lived a happy life of adventures, traversing the land from coast to country, exploring our landscape After 20 years of living the high life, retirement came upon her, and she found herself in a paddock under a tree, dreaming of the days that were.

One sunny afternoon, she was given a second chance at adventure when some people came to visit.

They took one look at her and saw what she could be.

She was towed away and taken to live in a backyard, where her restoration began.

They painted her, cleaned her up and changed her into the van she is today, but they realised that they didn’t have

the time to give her all the attention she deserved, so they began to search for her true adventure buddy.

This is where Hyacinth met Grace.

Grace fell in love instantly, and knew that this was the van for her.

Grace picked up Hyacinth and took her home to Medowie to live a new dream, full of new adventures, meeting new people and learning new things.

Together Grace and Hyacinth have started The Keen Bean & Co coffee company.

Grace and Hyacinth currently trade from 6 Waropara Road, Medowie, in the carpark of the health service and Overflow church adjacent to Medowie Christian School.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, from 8-11am and then 2:45-4pm.

Grace hopes to expand soon and be able to do weddings and festivals.

This Friday 29 September is the third annual International Coffee Day. More people are drinking coffee in cafes and making it in their homes on sophisticated equipment, and there is an expectation of a quality product.

The day is a global celebration of coffee’s journey from the farm to your cafe and supermarkets.

It honours the men and women who grow and

harvest the coffee that starts many of our days.

Nelson Bay is home to many cafes all of whom offer a different coffee drinking experience.

Debz Eade of Organic Eats in Nelson Bay told News Of The Area, “In sourcing our coffee ethically we are doing the right thing.”

She believes that through buying fair trade you can influence the lifestyles of the people where the coffee is grown, giving access to education and housing.

“Our coffee is fair trade coffee, that means it is fair for

everyone: equitable wages, good working conditions and respecting cultural identities while acting in a transparent and ethical manner, that’s what fair trade is all about,” she said The day is meant to bring attention to the plight of coffee growers around the world.

Coffee farming is not always an ethical process with growers living in poverty.

People around the world are being asked to consider if their daily cuppa is ethically sourced on International Coffee Day and to share their coffee on social media.

HANNAH Ryder has a heart of gold, and a desire to help those around her who are less fortunate.

The ten-year-old this week achieved her goal of donating her golden tresses to the Variety Club, to make a wig for someone in need.

Prior to this week, the only haircuts Hannah had had were small trims to keep

her long, straight blonde hair healthy.

The Variety Club’s Chairman of Motoring Events for Regional NSW, Kevin Leahy, told News Of The Area, “On behalf of Variety and the kids in the Hair with Heart program for children with alopecia, we just want to say a massive thank you!”

Wigs cost families up to $6,000, lasting one to two years, meaning families can spend tens of thousands of dollars on the purchase of wigs throughout a child’s youth.

Jason and Nicole had tried for more children of their own, including through IVF. “It seemed like the universe was telling us we were meant to have our big family through foster care,” Nicole said.

It was a whole-of-family decision and Kiara adores having siblings to dote on, and is thriving on the experience.

As Nicole said, the new additions to the family “will always know how special and loved they are in our home”.

There are many children and young people in our community who, through no fault of their own, cannot live with their parents or families.

Carers for emergency, respite and long-term care are urgently needed.

Couple Fostering New Opportunities in Life

PORT Stephens couple Jason and Nicole Dawe have recently been approved as foster carers and hope their story and the just-finished National Foster Care Week will encourage other families to think about getting involved.

The Dawes had been considering fostering for some time, but a health setback for Nicole last year put things on hold.

Fortunately she made a full recovery and the family went ahead with their plans.

Jason, Nicole and their daughter Kiara have always opened their home to family and friends, so it was only natural the fostering role would suit them.

Kiara was always a big part of the decision making, with Nicole telling News Of The Area “We always wanted a big family, and we’ve always wanted to help children.”

Nicole and Jason foster through Allambi Care, an outof-home foster agency for children and young people in the Newcastle and Hunter region.

They first contacted Allambi Care in March this year, and began their training program in May.

Following their training, and a comprehensive assessment checking process, they were eventually approved as authorised foster carers.

Things haven’t looked back since.

They were matched with two children and Nicole said “the kids have settled in really well, it is wonderful.”.

q Mahaylia Soars is looking forward to representing Port Stephens at the NSW Youth Parliament.

By Rachael VAUGHAN MAHAYLIA Soars is one of 100 passionate young people from across New South Wales selected to have their voices heard and debate a range of issues that matter to them as part of the 16th Annual YMCA NSW Youth Parliament later this year.

Over four sitting days on 25-26 and 28-29 September, the cohort, aged between 13-18, will debate bills on topics including youth mental health, the environment, housing affordability and education – in the chambers at State Parliament House in Sydney.

Mahaylia has been an active advocate for youthrelated issues in Port Stephens for a number of years, most recently assisting with Youth Week events in 2016 and 2017 as part of her involvement with the Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel (YAP).

She has also recently assisted with the organisation of the 2017 Port Stephens Youth forum, and was the Youth representative on the board for COPSY (Caring for our Youth Port Stephens).

Mahaylia told News Of The Area, “The YMCA Youth Parliament program is a great way for young people to have their say on real issues in NSW.” “While it is an amazing educational experience it is also a great way to make friends with young people across the whole state.”

“I’m really excited to represent Port Stephens and bring back some great ideas for Port Stephens Youth,” she said.

YMCA NSW CEO Leisa Hart said the influential program continues to break new ground every year.

“At the YMCA, we believe in the power of inspired young people.”

“By giving our young people a platform to be heard through our YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program, we not only empower them, but open up so many opportunities to improve and strengthen our communities through their ideas.”

“I am incredibly proud that the YMCA NSW Youth Parliament program continues to help shape policy in this state and I look forward to seeing what this year’s talented Youth Parliamentarians can achieve,” she said.

At the end of the sitting week, all pieces of youth legislation will be presented to NSW MPs for consideration.

This YMCA NSW program has had more than half a dozen pieces of youth legislation passed into NSW law over the past 15 years, including the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme.

Youth Parliament is managed by YMCA NSW and coordinated by a volunteer taskforce of young people aged between 18 and 22 who facilitate youth-led advocacy, community leadership and education about the parliamentary process.

Georgina Grimshaw is a 23-year-old singersongwriter from Newcastle.

She describes songwriting and performing as a way of helping her understand and cope with life.

“It’s a lot cheaper than therapy,” she laughs.

“Every moment of my working day is thinking or listening to music, thinking about what I could be doing or what other people are doing.”

During the Mumbai Madness event the students choreographed the Drance which they then performed to the theme of Slum Dog Millionaire.

Each of these students has ambitions. Isabella Biscan told News Of The Area, “I want to study musical theatre.”

“Drance lets you mix in a comfort zone with other people with similar interests,” she said.

Mady Peters expressed an interest in speech therapy and Tamara Stevens is keen to study psychology.

Mel Turner of Moonshadow TQC Cruises told News Of The Area, “It is great for us to engage with students and provide them with different performance opportunities.”

She believes that performing in different environments gives students the opportunity to experience stage presence outside a theatre environment.

Students Go Bollywood

By Marian SAMPSON TOMAREE High School students channelled Bollywood in their Drance performances.

Drance is a mix of Drama and dance.

Drance allows participants to express themselves and in this instance explore a different cultural style of dance.

Four students from the High School performed with non professional dancers on the Moonshadow Cruise Mumbai Madness.

The Drance students have been doing a variety of assignments including working on epics like Romeo and Juliet as part of their assessment tasks.

Performing in different environments is an important aspect of Drance and Mumbai Madness provided an opportunity for the dancers to perform to an audience of one hundred passengers.

Isabella Biscan has been studying dance for 12 years; Mady Peters and Tamara Stevens have both been studying dance for five years.
