STAY safe reminders are now in place in Port Stephens holiday locations thanks to Port Stephens Council and The Little Blue Dinosaur Foundation.

The “Holiday Time” campaign in Port Stephens will be conducted alongside similar campaigns 29 other NSW areas where the Foundation’s colourful signs with messages like “Hold My Hand” and “Slow Down Kids Around” will be on roads, in parks and around beaches.

Pam Single

WE’D like to introduce Pam Single.

Pam was the first female Councillor elected in Port Stephens in 1974 when Council was known as Port Stephens Shire Council.

Being a Councillor living in Boat Harbour in the early 1970s presented Pam with a range of challenges which Councillors don’t face today, she used to save her change and walk to the public phone to call Council to find

out if she had any messages and to conduct her council business.

It was in her first year as a Councillor that she and her husband Ray finally had telephone access in their home which made life easier.

Pam served as a Councillor between 1974 and 1980.

In this time, Pam worked tirelessly at Council to gain acceptance of women as Councillors and to gain sporting facilities

for the community.

Pam Single told News Of The Area, “We applied for Sport and Recreation grants to get money and were able to secure grants for all the tennis courts and the then Anna Bay Oval.

“I was very pleased to be able to work on securing a long term asset for the community, but I feel that my community work at the Boat Harbour Community Tennis Club was more important than what I did at Council,” she said.

Coalition Government’s Ministry.

“As the Minister with responsibility for Food Regulation and Health Safety, I was pleased to work with industry and public health stakeholders through the Health Food Partnership to expand and improve the Health Star Rating initiative, and improve the health content of packaged foods through reformulation and portion control.”

“Reforms and new initiatives in the National Industrial Chemicals Notification Scheme, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, the National Blood Authority and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency have also been an important part of my former role.”

SES Say, We Need You!

STORMS, floods, hail, cyclones and bushfires cost our communities dearly.

In fact the cost of natural disasters in Australia is 50% more than previously estimated at $9bn in 2015 and is set to increase to $33bn by 2050.

These figures include the financial and social cost of disaster mitigation and recovery.

The SES are responsible for first response to 96% of disasters caused by weather and bushfire events.

Powered by a team of volunteers the SES based at Corlette are the first responders that help to rescue people and property in their hour of need.

The SES at Corlette are seeking additional volunteers to be a part of the front line in helping our community, while young and fit volunteers are needed the group also has current active members who are aged into their seventies who perform tasks like

The next Bay Business Breakfast will be held at Nelson Bay Golf Club on 8 March, 2018.

All volunteers are provided with uniforms, equipment and training free and the vital service that they deliver to the community is professional and rewarding.

Drone Camp for Girls

BREAKING stereotypes for young girls is a wonderful thing, and there’s a program coming to Port Stephens that is smashing stereotypes out of the park, and encouraging girls to join a traditionally male dominated field.

The ‘ME’ Program is hosting two ‘camps’ in the January school holidays for girls to learn drone piloting.

The two day Sheflies (she-flies) events will be held at two Hunter locations - PCYC Port Stephens and Hunter School of Performing Arts.

The camps will teach girls; manual flight tutorial and practice (hands-on), scenario based flight practice activities (handson), real-life applications of drone technology, Australian regulations,

safety considerations and flight briefing.

Girls will work in teams of three throughout the sessions and swap between the roles of Pilot in Charge, Co-Pilot, and Air Traffic Controller.

Girls in the program will learn by undertaking ‘real life’ scenarios.

The Port Stephens camp will take place on Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 January 2018, from 8.30am—4pm each day

at PCYC Port Stephens (7 Austral Street, Nelson Bay).

The course will then run again in Newcastle on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 January 2018 from 8.30am – 4pm each day in the Bini shell hall at Hunter School of Performing Arts (Broadmeadow Road, Broadmeadow).

The course costs only $50 total per person, which includes the two day drone course, lunch and snacks.

KATE Washington MP decided her Christmas cards this year needed the best level of creative talent possible to make them special, so she put the call out to the preschoolers of Port Stephens to design her card.

For the first time, the design competition was directed to preschool students and entries were received from across the Port Stephens region.

The response was phenomenal, and News Of The Area is proud to report on the winning finalists and winning card designer.

An artwork created by Luke Elsegood of Salamander Bay has taken out the 2017 Port Stephens Christmas Card Design Competition as the overall winner.

Luke, aged 5, is a student at Karingal Preschool from Nelson Bay. Ms Washington also praised the highly commended entries and announced the finalists from other local preschools across Port Stephens.

These preschoolers included; Holly, Aged 5, Raymond Terrace, Rory, Aged

5, Shoal Bay, Arabella, Aged 5, Nelson Bay and April, Aged 5, Soldiers Point.

Ms Washington took time from her busy schedule to visit many of these budding young artists at their schools, to pose for pictures and thank them for their creative efforts.

Luke’s artwork is featured on the front of the card, while all finalists are recognised inside the Christmas card.

EVERYONE loves going to the movies and the best sort of movie is coming to the Bay on 6 January.

The Secret Life Of Pets will be presented at the very first Cinema Under the Stars at Nelson Bay Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millet told News Of The Area, “Who doesn’t love the Bay in early January?

“It’s filled with sunshine, blue water, and families making memories.”

He believes that it simply made sense for Newcastle Permanent to extend our free Cinema Under the Stars program to Port Stephens in 2018.

“I have no doubt that this free event will be a hit with locals and visitors alike and will quickly become an annual family tradition,” Mr Millet said.

The movie will be shown at Tomaree Sports Fields at the corner of Salamander Way and Nelson Bay Road, Nelson Bay..

The event kicks off at 5.30pm with a fantastic line-up of family friendly entertainment and activities before the blockbuster movie.

The event is being delivered with Radio Bay FM as the official radio partner.

Radio Bay FM’s Geoff Brown told News Of The Area, “Proud to be the radio partner it’s a great event for port stephens and we are very pleased to be involved.

I’M writing because I am a bit incensed about the piece in Bay News of the Area 121 December 2017 reporting on the council’s release of the “endorsed strategy”.

I have come to realise that this council still has

some massive integrity problems which most people thought would have disappeared after the recent election.

Your piece in 21 December edition seems to present the impression that the general population is enthusiastic about increased building heights in Nelson

Bay. This is the absolute opposite of the truth.

As you know, I let off steam via my pencil and I’ve developed a full head of steam in the past few months over this issue.

Tee Off For Mark Hughes Foundation

THE team at Horizons Golf Resort have decided to do something positive to help those living with cancer and teamed up with the Mark Hughes Foundation to raise vital funds for research.

Director of Horizons Golf Resort, Bob Westbury told

News Of The Area, “Horizons were very committed to seeing the day a success.”

He believes that they raised in excess of $4000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

“The team at Horizons were inspired to support cancer research after a family member of one of our team was recently diagnosed,” he

said.

There are different cancers, and brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children, and adults aged under 40 in Australia.

However, very little is known about brain cancer, its causes or how to effectively treat it.

The Mark Hughes

Foundation was formed so that research can be carried out to decrease mortality rates and decrease the incidence of brain cancer in Australia.

“We are really proud to be showcasing Horizons for this event and we are very excited about the outcome, so many local people supported us and the Mark Hughes Foundation through the day,” he said.

The golf was great and best Net was won by Luke Crawford, Mark Gilson, Mick Dundas and Daniel Hendrie with a net 52. Scratch was won by Colleen O’Brien,

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE A MOBILE PHONE TELECOMMUNICATIONS FACILITY IN SOLDIERS POINT Optus plans to improve the telecommunications services in Soldiers Point and surrounding areas with the installation of a telecommunications facility at an existing site to improve coverage and mobile phone services in the area.

Optus proposes to install a new telecommunications facility at: - 5-7 Mitchell Street, Soldiers Point NSW 2317 (RFNSA No. 2317002) Involving: • The replacement of three (3) existing panel antennas with three (3) new Optus antennas at a height of 15.7m on new mounts; • The installation of twelve (12) new Remote Radio Units (RRUs) at a height of 15.7m on the existing tower on new mounts; • The installation of a new GPS antenna at a height of 16.7m; • Associated and necessary ancillary works to ensure the proper functioning of the telecommunications facility including cabling, earthing, signage, safe access, electrical works and replacement or strengthening of the existing mounting arrangement.

The proposed works are defined as “Low-impact Facilities” in accordance with the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 1997 and “maintenance activity” as defined in Schedule 3 of the Telecommunications Act 1997. Sailing Scholarships

By Marian SAMPSON SAILING is a sport that many people don’t consider, yet lessons can be affordable and skills learnt can stay with you for life.

Graham Oborn of the Soldiers Point Marina Sailing School told News Of The Area, “We are very fortunate to have an anonymous donor from Melbourne making available two scholarships for children aged between 8-11 to learn how to sail.”

He believes that the scholarships will be awarded to children whose families may not be able to afford to pay for sporting lessons for their children.

The scholarships were offered after the Melbourne based families children

participated in learning to sail programs while staying in the Bay. Students at the Soldiers Point Marina Sailing School start out learning to sail on the Optimus sailing dinghy.

Bill Brill whose daughter Emily Brill is about to commence sailing lessons at the school told News Of The Area, “Emily has a brother and sister who have done the program before and Graham was amazing, the children developed confidence through the program.”

The lessons are undertaken from the sheltered beach at Soldiers Point Marina and anyone interested in applying for the scholarships should contact Carmen Holden at the Marina for further information.
