Dragon Boat Club has started

GREATER Port Stephens Dragon Boat Club Inc. is officially up and running.

A keen dragon boat paddler has started Port Stephens’ first dragon boat club.

Andrew Downey, who has recently moved to the Bay, has been a paddler on dragon boats for many years.

Andrew secured a donation of two dragon boats from the Port Macquarie Dragon Boat Club for the community of Port Stephens.

Last weekend the Hunter River Dragon Boat Club held a try out’s day which was well attended by enthusiastic locals.

Each dragon boat has twenty paddlers, a drummer and a sweep, who

“There has been tremendous support from the community with 160 bowlers participating in the day, and 200 attending the lunch,” he said.

Helen Scott, another committee member, said that “there were over $10,000 in raffle and silent auction prizes from local businesses all to aid in the fundraising”.

Dylan’s family desperately needs the vehicle with a lift to get him to and from medical appointments and to his classes at the special education unit at Tomaree Education Precinct.

Sporting Hope is wanting to raise $35,000 for Dylan and will continue to take donations for the cause.

THE News Of The Area team is thrilled to welcome their newest addition, Glenda Farrar.

With extensive sales experience and knowledge, Glenda has been appointed as Business Development Manager of the ‘hyperlocal’ community paper.

Thirty years in business sales, marketing and advertising means that Ms Farrar is well equipped to look after the paper’s current and future customers.

Glenda said, “I am passionately throwing myself into the task of making this very local paper successful and interesting for the residents of the area and of real value to the local business community in terms of reaching their local customers.”

Glenda moved to Port Stephens about three years ago after living for many years in Far North Queensland.

She has been working in the area for a well known Port Stephens [Fairfax] paper for that period of time.

News Of The Area Director Michael Wright

said the move Ms Farrar has made is a win for the independent paper and for the community.

“I’ve known Glenda for the past three years. I actually hired her when I was at the Examiner and know that her biggest strength is her ability to throw-herself-in and totally understand how a local business operates before making recommendations on its marketing.”

The three [current] News Of The Area publications are warmly accepted in their respective communities as a strong alternative to the long-time media that has been here,” said Mr Wright.

Glenda has a wide range of experience in sales, originally starting as a travel consultant in a travel agency in Mount Isa and Townsville.

Following this, Glenda joined Yellow Pages as their Advertising Consultant where she spent a number of years looking after a large area of Queensland.

She later moved on to take a challenging job of managing a company in the building industry

Yep, you are stuck with him and let me assure you that your pure love will slowly disintegrate into feelings of malevolence that would test Lucifer.

At first you will just whisper “shhh” in a soft voice as he snores like a grunting rhino.

This will progress to a gentle prod when he chokes, mid snort, and you suffer yet another night of insomnia.

The following month, in a raised voice, you will beckon him to roll onto his side.

After the first year you will raise your pillow and press it gently over his nose and mouth until the horrendous racket subsides.

By the fifth year you will no doubt be sleeping in the spare room with the dog and re-reading the Bible to find what verses deal with the specific issue of sleep deprivation leading to evil plotting.

I WENT along to the Progress Association meeting last week,Thursday evening, to hear about the Ferry Service and the community issues relating to reliability, communication and overall lack and quality of service.

How bitterly disappointed I was to hear that the Hawks Nest wharf was more of a hindrance in their schedule rather than another positive to sell to their customers.

The community raised over $100,000 to get this floating pontoon built added by the generous donation of We-ef Lighting who provided the lighting as a donation at considerable cost to them.

This was all done because a few locals shared an idea of how to get visitors from Nelson Bay to see our beautiful beaches and allow

them time to enjoy it.

With the help of the Progress Association, we were able to achieve this wonderful result.

However, based on the comments on the night it appears that scheduling a stop at Hawks Nest in the timetable is difficult!!

Seriously it was a comment which was farcical to say the least and raised considerable consternation from those in the hall. Simply said, ‘You make time in the timetable’.

All businesses in Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens understand seasonality as it is nothing new in a holiday destination location.

We adjust our hours and staff to offset the quiet times but also bank the money in the busy period for exactly those times.

That’s nothing new to us nor should it be to Ferry Service.

The same would apply to the ferry service. In the

OPINION Dear News Of The Area, YET again I’m being forced to listen to the loudly vocalised separation anxiety of a dog “on holiday”.

It’s nice that holidaymakers can bring their pets with them, but

off season run a reduced but reliable service and communicate what you are doing.

Nobody will give you grief if you should adopt this approach.

The disappointing thing was the Ferry Service arrived with no plan moving forward e.g proposed off season timetable, commitment of stopping at Hawks Nest, and giving a commitment as to the reliability of the vessels to provide the service advertised.

There was talk about declining numbers from the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest side.

Surely by now there must be an understanding of why.

Passengers won’t use a service that can’t be relied on. Address these issues and things may change.

It’s clear that the monopoly we have today has a number of shortcomings.

Rotary Making OPINION a Difference Dear News Of The Area,

EARLIER this month I officially commenced my year as District Governor of Rotary District 9670 – an area that stretches from Newcastle to Bourke.

For me, it is an exciting time.

An opportunity to contribute to improving our local communities, and ensuring we provide a helping hand to those most in need.

When I tell my friends, family and complete strangers from Port Stephens what my next 12 months will look like, they seem excited and supportive. Then they ask

“what does Rotary actually do?”

It’s a fair question.

People often think Rotary is a group of older men cooking a BBQ at the local market.

The truth is, Rotary is much more than that.

It’s about making a difference in the lives of individuals – both in our local communities and across the world.

Rotarians can have such a positive influence in communities right across our region.

Locally, Rotary has been instrumental in organising projects that contribute to our social cohesion.

We are in the position to offer resources to local schools to help students develop their literacy skills.

Plastic Free July for Port Stephens family Recyle-Reuse-Reduce

PLASTIC Free July is a campaign that started in 2011 in WA with a simple aim – to refuse single-use plastic during the month of July.

Since then, the campaign has spread around Australia and gone worldwide.

Just this month, both Woolworths and Coles have announced they will be phasing out single-use plastic bags over the next 12 months.

The tide is turning as people become more aware of the damage plastic is doing to our environment and that it cannot continue unchecked.

All plastic that has ever been made, is still in existence today.

Australians on average use 100kg of plastic packaging a year per household.

Local family, the Smiths, have made a commitment for the month of July not to use any single-use plastic.

The family was already using its own shopping bags but the campaign really made them aware of how much plastic we buy on a daily basis.

Food storage, especially when out and about, made the Smiths get creative.

Jess told News Of The Area, “The challenge has seen us make huge changes.

We now take our own mugs to coffee shops; we have reusable cutlery with us; take our own containers to the butchers and use reusable storage or beeswax wraps for our food.”

The family also purchase its pantry foods and fresh produce through a local food

Veterans Visit Maritime Museum

NELSON Bay Diggers Bowls were recipients of a $1470 ANZAC Community Grant.

A group of 31 members and friends travelled to the Maritime Museum Darling

Harbour.

Prior to arriving at Darling Harbour, they were provided morning tea by the Coach Company “FUNCOACH4U” at Girrakool Park in Somersby Falls National Park.

Glover, aged 93, and Laurie Gordon, aged 94, both WWII veterans, were unable to attend on the day due to health reasons.”

“We would like to thank our local Member, Ms Kate Washington MP, who recommended us for the grant which covered the costs for the day and Mr Davis Elliott, MP Minister for Veteran

Affairs, who approved the Grant,” she said.

Kate Washington told News Of The Area, “It’s terrific to be able to support our RSL and returned service people and to enable them to participate in activities which they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.”

The Nelson Bay Diggers Bowls are an Intra Club of the Nelson Bay Wests Diggers Group.

There are 100 members,

Jess also explained that they no longer use plastic bin liners or use a plastic bag but instead use the bin and wash it out daily or line it with newspaper.

Beeswax wraps can be quite a large initial expense but other alternatives can be utilised, such as steel lunch boxes or silicone sandwich wraps.

The website www. plasticfreejuly.org offers lots of ideas and suggestions of alternatives to plastic for cleaning, cooking, food storage, personal care, pet care and shopping.

Plastic Free July can become plastic free all year round.

Community Frustration over Ferry

THE long running battle over the confusing and outdated ferry timetable may soon be resolved.

MidCoast Council’s Dan Aldridge is meeting with Port Stephens Ferry Owner Adrian Thompson this week to hopefully fix the outdated signboard on the Tea Gardens side.

“I don’t want Council to

be a road block to hinder residents, tourists or businesses in regards to the timetable issue,” Mr Aldridge told News Of The Area.

The sign dates back to when there were two ferry operators servicing the Tea Gardens/Nelson Bay run.

This week’s meeting follows a forum last Thursday between concerned residents,

businesses, MidCoast Council and Ferry Owner Adrian Thompson and his advisors.

More than 80 people packed the Hawks Nest Community Centre for the meeting organised by the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association.

“The meeting was called as the Progress Association had received a number of complaints about the ferry,”

Secretary Patricia Garrard said.

Reliability was high on the agenda.

“There is a view that the service has deteriorated considerably over the past six months,” Patricia said.

“There have been occasions where people have been left stranded at Tea Gardens and Nelson Bay due either to the ferry simply not showing up or not adhering to the published departure times.”

BAYNews Of The Area It was noted that businesses are suffering, that the schedule is wrong and cannot be relied upon, and access, particularly in Nelson Bay is difficult for people with limited mobility.

Also of major concern, the Hawks Nest Wharf is no longer being used as a pickup or departure point.

From the outset, Mr Thompson’s business advisor Malcolm Anderson made it very clear, “The Ferry Operation is not a public service and as such is not bound by local or State Government regulations.”

He also noted that bad weather hindered daily operations and scheduling but that a new timetable was under review.

Mr Anderson also encouraged people to visit the Ferry’s Facebook page to check the ferry’s operating times.

Myall River Action Group’s Gordon Grainger was not happy with the proposal.

“There has to be a better way of communication in regards to the timetable,” Gordon said.

“This matter does not end with this meeting,” Patricia said.

Mr Thompson’s take on Thursday’s forum was brief and to the point “It was an excellent meeting,” he told News Of The Area.

Car crash claims life of woman at busy intersection A PORT Stephens lady has lost her life on the road this week, when she was the in a terrible car accident on Monday.

The accident happened at the intersection of Industrial Drive and Tourle Street in Mayfield around 11:30am.

Crash scene investigations at the time of print suggest the White Holden Astra was turning right onto Tourle Street, when it was struck by a Ford Territory.

The Medowie woman, a passenger in the White Holden Astra, passed away at the scene, while her 66-year old husband was taken to John Hunter Hospital.

A 31-year old male was also taken to Hospital with injuries.

The highway was closed in all directions for most of the day, and into the early evening for some access points.

The News Of The Area team send the families of all involved our deepest sympathies as they deal with this tragedy.

Boot Camp for Dry July

A CARING group of fitness mad friends have put their alcohol to the side for the month of July, to participate in the ‘Dry July’ fundraiser.

The fundraiser provides much needed funds that go towards cancer support organisations across Australia, to help improve patient comfort, care and wellbeing.

Dry July raises money to ease the burden, reduce stress and add a bit of comfort for those affected by cancer.

Project Health & Fitness members, Jacki Ashpole, Sally Black, Kym Brennan, Lee Brooks and Shay Warby formed a team and set about planning some fantastic ways to reach their goal total.

Jackie Ashpole told News Of The Area, “Each of our team members all know

someone with cancer, or have lost someone to this terrible disease.”

“We thought it was such a simple commitment to help raise funds to help people get through the worst time of their lives.”

“We’re hoping to smash our goal and raise as much as possible,” she said.

The team originally set their goal to raise $500, but at the time of print have already surpassed that goal and reached $650.

With a public fundraising event open to the community still to come, the team has now set their goal a little higher, and hope to reach $1000 before the month finishes.

On Saturday 29 from 8am-9am, Project Health and Fitness will have a ‘Charity Boot Camp’ in their shed to help the team hit that goal.

Entry is $10 for nonmembers and $5 for members.

The boot camp will be suitable for all fitness levels,

and is set to be a lot of fun as well as great fitness.

Jacki said, “We are also having a barbecue at the conclusion of the boot camp,

where all profits will be added to our total.”

Oi: Domestic Violence Mobile App for Youth

RECOGNISING, standing up and speaking out against domestic and family violence has just become easier for young people.

Samaritans has launched a new mobile app, called ‘Oi’ which can be downloaded for Apple and android phones.

The app is a digital resource developed specifically for young people to help them in identifying and being a voice against abuse.

The app directs youth to services, which can provide practical help to stop abuse or assist to remove young people from a situation which puts them at risk.

The app is the result of an Optus Future Makers Grant which Samaritans received in 2016. ’Oi’ was designed to be a tool that provides selfhelp information for young people about domestic violence.

The app includes an interactive quiz, a frequently asked questions section, and a comprehensive list of support services available for anyone who needs to talk to someone or is at risk of domestic or family violence.

There is also a pledge which people can make via the app to never commit or remain silent about abuse and share across their social media networks and feeds.

World Heritage Bid For Bay Nelson Bay Bowling

THE bid to gain World Heritage status for the Bay is underway.

We all know that we live in paradise, but the actual scope of what surrounds us is sometimes lost.

Port Stephens is a huge waterway, which many believe is not only unique in the minimal impact of man on the waterway, but one which deserves to be managed with a whole of estuary approach.

Preliminary studies have strongly indicated that over 7,000 square kilometres of this region meets the criteria for inclusion into UNESCO’s World Heritage Program.

Port Stephens is home to nearly 700 species of plants.

It hosts the largest mangrove forest in the State, as well as extensive seagrass meadows.

It is also home to 300 species of birds, over 25 kinds of reptiles, and the region also supports a large dolphin and sea turtle population.

There are over 20 species of threatened birds including the Gould’s petrel.

Of the flora in the region, there are 22 species of threatened or endangered plants.

There are seven species of threatened frogs and snakes, and eight threatened species

of mammals.

Nearly 65 percent of the estuary now receives some form of protection.

Terry Domico, a local Conservation Biologist working on the application told News Of The Area that chances are that you came to live in this region because of its great beauty and diversity.

“World Heritage status is designed to protect those values in perpetuity.”

“It will also create job opportunities for this region

when gateway communities, like Nelson Bay and Tea Gardens, gear up to handle the increased tourism that will surely follow.”

“This means more restaurants and cafes, more accommodation, and more services for everyone,” he said.

If successful this will see Port Stephens join Fraser Island, the Greater Blue Mountains, and the Great Barrier Reef.

SUSTAINABILITY has been on Nelson Bay Bowling Club’s strategic plan and their efforts have been noticed.

The Hunter Business Awards have listed the bowling club as a finalist in the Hunter Water Savers category, seeing the club up against heavy hitter Newcastle City Council in the category.

harvesting systems which will eventually see all drainage from the roof go into tanks which will power a sprinkler system for the greens.

Alan Barnes, the Club’s Chairman, told News Of The Area “We’ve been working on a strategic plan that is looking at aspects of harvesting as much water as we can which can then be used on the site.”

“If we are successful in winning the award category, the $10,000 will go towards four 20,000Ltr

tanks which will allow us to circulate the harvested water without needing to chemically treat it.”

“With the water tanks we should be able to save a considerable amount of water and the second phase of our renovations will see us using grey water for flushing toilets within the clubhouse and servicing the greens into the future,” he said.

The conceptual stage of the renovations at the club has put the building on a footing which will see it be a sustainable development where it comes to water into the future.

PORT Stephens Council has many different volunteers and groups that help make our region a better place to live.

There are over 850 active volunteers performing a range of tasks.

From guiding visitors at the Visitors Information Centre in Apex Park Nelson Bay, to planting and cleaning up our parks, the region is fortunate to have residents that make an effort.

We also have volunteers on our Sports Council, in our libraries, in Landcare and Tidy Towns groups, on Halls Committees, at Ngioka Centre and on our Sister Cities Committees.

Melinda Anderson of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Council asks a lot of our volunteers and while the volunteers add value to our environment it is a two way street.”

“Some committees are more active than others, but they all offer great value to

the community.”

“Many enjoy a sense of camaraderie and gain a huge sense of satisfaction when they see the results of their labours,” she said.

Port Stephens has some great facilities like the Hinton School Of The Arts Building which is of historic significance, and the Medowie Community Centre which is a real hub for the area.

Both of these facilities are managed by community volunteers in Council’s Halls Committees.

MP for Paterson Meryl Swanson would like to hear from community organisations and local governments that could use a share of up to $150,000 available to fund small capital projects.

Applications close 14 August.

Ms Swanson’s office is seeking expressions of interest for the Stronger Communities Programme, which offers sums between $2,500 and $20,000 to successful applicants.

To be eligible for a grant, applicants are required to match grants in cash or in-kind on at least a dollar for dollar basis.

“This programme funds small capital projects which deliver social benefits by supporting community participation and contributing to the vibrancy of local communities,” said Ms Swanson.

“I’m inviting local organisations to submit an expression of interest outlining their project. The Paterson electorate community consultation committee will identify priority projects and then invite selected groups to formally apply for funding.

Horse Power for the Disabled

EQUINE Therapy is proving a huge hit with riders at Raymond Terrace’s Riding for the Disabled.

The charity has centres

all over Australia and has been providing experiences for over 50 years.

The Raymond Terrace centre supports clients from a wide geographical area, including Port Stephens and

the Bay. The centre is NDIS (National Disability Insurance Service) registered, meaning that those with the relevant funding can use it for Equine

Therapy.

Contrary to some recent media reports suggesting that the NDIS is funding horseriding, this is not riding per se but a specially tailored intervention

The Raymond Terrace Centre also offers Hippotherapy - an intense physical therapy - with a physiotherapist in attendance.

This allows people to develop their balance, coordination, strength and posture, as well as providing psychological, speech, language and cognitive benefits.

Janet Hudson, Treasurer of the local RDA, told News Of The Area, “Parents have tears in their eyes, seeing their children do things they never dreamed they could

do.”

“Anything to do with horses is generally expensive and this charity gives those with a disability, who may otherwise not be able to afford or have access to equine recreation, the chance to take part.”

The centre is always needing funds to support the upkeep of the horses and their vet bills.

One of their main fundraisers is their ‘Share a Horse’ project.

A great idea for a birthday or Christmas present, for $30 a year, you can sponsor a horse of your choosing, receive a certificate, details of your horse and a bi-monthly newsletter.

Hudson back from World stage

PORT Veterinarian Dr Ilona Hudson has just returned from a successful trip to the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Dr Hudson was the only equestrian athlete to represent Australia in the competitive dressage event.

The Maccabiah Games, often referred to as the Jewish Olympics, draws together 9,000 athletes from 78 countries.

The first was held in 1932, and the games take place quadrennially in Israel.

These games were a particularly special event for Australian Athletes, as they participated in a ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Maccabiah games where the bridge leading athletes on their march into the opening ceremony collapsed, killing

four Australian athletes and injuring sixty others.

Competitors from around the world cannot always bring their horses with them to compete in the games, so a pool of horses is made available to those competitors, who can then ‘draw’ a horse to compete on.

Dr Hudson told News Of The Area, “The horse I drew was called Dan Dan.” “In my class there were eight riders, some like me on borrowed horses and some on their own.”

“I had four training sessions with the horse prior to competing and based on a video of each of those sessions I received coaching advice from a coach in Germany and another in Australia,” she said.

The first competition was the Individual Qualifier One, where Dr Hudson finished in

q Ilona Hudson on the horse she drew to ride for the Games; Dan Dan. fifth place.

The second competition was the Individual Qualifier two, where she jumped up one place and came in fourth.

That one place improvement qualified Dr Hudson for the final, where

she finished fifth overall.

Interestingly, Dr Hudson was the only rider in the final to make it that far on a borrowed horse; all competitors that finished ahead of her had brought their own horse to the

Games.

There was also a team event that Dr Hudson was ineligible for because there were no other Australian riders.

Dr Hudson said, “I am absolutely delighted with this

result and what I achieved in a very short space of time.”

“It’s an outstanding opportunity to test my riding skills, and also to share the experience with new and old friends from all over the world.”

PORT Stephens has an incredibly active paddling community with Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP), outrigger canoes, kayaks and even dragon boats forming a part of the paddling fraternity.

The Port Stephens Outrigger Canoe Club has represented the region internationally with four paddlers having participated in the World Masters Championships in Auckland.

They were joined by two local New Zealand paddlers and won the silver medal in the twenty-two kilometre master mixed marathon.

This year outrigger paddlers also participated in the National Titles at Mooloolaba, where Port Stephens’ master mixed crew won third place in the Master Mixed Short Course.
