PUBLIC Art can sometimes be a topic of controversy.

Port Stephens Graffiti Action Team (GAT) is in staunch opposition to murals, as they see the link between public art murals and graffiti as a progression.

GAT volunteers have been removing graffiti from our streetscapes for eight years.

A spokesperson for GAT told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Graffiti Action Team has over time opposed the graffiti style murals found in some areas.

“These are often angry in theme, therefore not of universal appeal to all that pass; they are often not of durable paint so deteriorate rapidly and require refurbishment.

“Above all they have been found to attract other graffiti art or tags on them or in the vicinity near them, thus downgrading the area rather

EcoNetwork is holding a community forum addressing the issues of transitioning to renewable energy on 12 November at 2pm at the Tomaree Community Centre, Town Circuit, Salamander Bay. Special Guest Dr Mark Diesendorf, Honorary Associate Professor in Environmental Humanities at the University of NSW, is researching rapid

mitigation of global climate change and the integration of renewable energy on a large scale into electricity supply-demand systems, given the Turnbull Government’s controversial new energy policy that replaces the Clean Energy Target with a National Energy Guarantee.

Nigel Dique, spokesperson for EcoNetwork-Port Stephens, which has organised the forum, told News Of The Area, “This is a great opportunity for people who may be confused about government

updates on Port Stephens communities defending their neighbourhoods.

Improved Look for Anna Bay Entry Point

THE Anna Bay and Birubi Hall Community Landcare Group recently spent time planting a new entrance to Anna Bay on Gan Gan Road opposite the Anna Bay Primary School.

The group is made up of Port Stephens Council volunteers whose current goal is making the entranceways to Anna Bay more visually appealing.

Carl Boardman of the Anna Bay and Birubi Hall Community Landcare Group told News Of The Area, “We are working on planting out

natives into a garden which will create an entrance to Anna Bay.” He believes creating better streetscapes will improve Anna Bay’s desirability.

“The garden has been made possible through a Port Stephens Council community grant of $2000,” he said.

Port Stephens Councillor Sarah Smith told News Of The Area, “I live here, and a big part of why I joined Council was to see local projects for local people being carried out.”

Hall Community Landcare Group members have planted the area with what they believe are the last of the plants from the Ngioka Centre at Little Beach.

Peter Davis is the Chair of the group and he shared his vision for the future.

“I’d like to see all entries to Anna Bay being planted and cared for as a joint project between Council and local volunteers,” he said.

Nick has an elaborate past which crosses life in a family law practice, motor racing, life saving, working on community boards and he has also been the CEO of a permanent building society.

He holds many roles

and is currently a director of Probus South Pacific; he is an active Probus Member and is also active within Toastmasters.

What many may not know is the man who provided family law services has also served on the boards of the Royal Life Saving Society Australia NSW Branch for 12 years, and the Confederation

of Australian Motor Sports (CAMS) for eight years and has raced in the prestigious Bathurst series.

In 1969 and 1970 Nick drove in the Bathurst Hardie Ferodo 500.

Nick told News Of The Area, “It confused people to see the lawyer in a threepiece suit racing cars; I was proud to drive in the

Chrysler team in 1970 as codriver with the Australian Champion on the Bathurst circuit.”

In the mid 1970s he raced stock vehicles and won a trip to France where he attended a top racing driver school.

For his service to motor sport Nick was awarded the Australian Sports Medal and Life Membership of CAMS.

Mambo Objection Deadline Looms KATE Washington MP is keen to remind constituents that the deadline for objections to the proposed Mambo Wetlands Development DA 2017/620

is looming.

“The closing date is Friday 27 October.”

“If approved, the development would mean the loss of 2.15acres of koala habitat.”

The NSW Scientific Committee has made a preliminary determination to list the Port Stephens koalas

as endangered.

The development application is for two dwellings with a long access road.

The land is zoned E2 – environmental protection, which does allow for dual occupancy and dwellings, with consent.

TOWN water is now flowing to Salt Ash Public School and streets throughout the Williamtown Investigation Area as the water supply project reaches its final stages.

The project was first announced by the NSW Government in December 2015, and Hunter Water has since designed and constructed a reticulated water network in the Investigation Area allowing almost 200 properties access to safe drinking water from its system.

With the water supply infrastructure completed as scheduled in June 2017, Hunter Water has since worked on behalf of the Department of Defence with individual property owners to project manage domestic plumbing works required to connect to the new system.

Hunter Water Managing Director Jim Bentley said he was pleased some relief had arrived for residents in the area.

“Providing drinking water to the Williamtown Investigation Area has been a priority project for Hunter Water since it was

first announced by the NSW Government, and we’re pleased to see our high quality, safe drinking water available to residents, and the students at Salt Ash Public School, for the first time.

“Hunter Water has consulted with each property owner to determine their personal needs when it comes to the style of connection at their property.

Everyone has different requirements that we’ve worked to meet, for example while some residents have the connection plumbed directly to their homes, others have opted to simply have a town water tap installed in the front yard.

“With more properties connecting each day, we’re expecting all those who have opted to join the system to be connected by Christmas.

We’re pleased to provide Williamtown residents with high quality drinking water into the future,” he said.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said the water supply project was a direct outcome of listening to the local community.

“Williamtown residents

have had their lives turned upside down, and many have been relying on bottled water for drinking after they learnt their tanks and bores may be contaminated.

“The consistent advice the NSW Government has received is that the most effective and immediate way to support the community in the Investigation Area is to remove the main risk pathway, which is ingesting groundwater. Connecting impacted residents to safe reticulated water supplied

by Hunter Water is a critical response by the NSW Government.

“While we know this hasn’t solved all the problems in Williamtown, we hope there is some relief that comes from having ready access to safe drinking water straight to the tap.

“Hunter Water has done a great job in delivering a water supply to the Williamtown community, and I commend the Commonwealth Government for stepping in to fund the project.”

The employment landscape has changed dramatically over time and it can come as quite a shock to realise the hoops you have to jump through to be accepted into various organisations, be they private or public.

I think we can all remember the first job we ever applied for, and how easy the application process was in the good old days.

My first job was as a waitress in a Chinese restaurant.

I had been to the beach and was walking home (sarong, bare feet) when I saw a sign that said, ‘Waitress wanted.’

I opened the door and noticed a man in the corner, who was sound asleep. He had formed a bed out of three dining chairs. I woke him up (brave or stupid) and said I was interested in the job.

He asked me two questions: 1. Can you work Saturday nights? “Yes.” 2. Do you own shoes? “Yes.” I started that weekend.

Let’s fast forward several (many) years.

Now, in order to prove your worth there is a multi-step application process.

First you need to write an application that gives detailed responses to 16 selection criteria.

Your resumé has to be rewritten for each new role, as though you are a bespoke coat that has to be redesigned with each new position.

Next comes the testing process: there’s cognitive tests to ensure you know which shape comes next in a pattern, then psychological tests to prove you have a personality that is nothing like our current political leaders.

This is before the face-to-face interview that involves role plays, written responses to scenarios and team building exercises with the other applicants in a tactic reminiscent of The Hunger Games.

After all of that, if you finally get the job, you’ll be wanting to take your first sick day due to physical and mental exhaustion.

Sub-branches use funds from the sale of commemorative items to support veterans and all sub-branch functions are performed by tireless volunteers.

Nelson Bay RSL subbranch vice president Norm Cason wants to ensure local residents that the inquiry is affecting the organisation in terms of charitable fundraising, but not in how the sub-branch supports serving and ex-serving members.

“While the Bergin inquiry proceeds, and until a determination on compliance with the Charitable Fundraising Act [1991 (NSW)] is made, the new state president [James Brown] has mandated a cessation of all charitable fundraising.”

“The NSW State RSL Branch (of which each of the 300-plus sub-branches are linked) has been subject to a critical review by various arms of government due to the alleged financial malpractice of a few individuals,” Mr Cason said.

“There will be no sales of commemorative items prior to, or at, Remembrance Day this year by the RSL, however we encourage your support .

DESPITE the current inquiry into RSL NSW, the Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch wants to ensure local residents that the distribution of Remembrance Day poppies will continue, albeit on a complimentary basis.

The Flanders poppy signifies the plants that sprung from the battlefields after WWI. The red poppies also symbolise the blood of fallen comrades.

“We have 1,000 free poppies available at the usual distribution points,” Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch secretary Russell Durrant said.

“We encourage members of the public to show their support by displaying their poppy with pride.”

A current inquiry by the Hon. Patricia Bergin SC into RSL NSW and an investigation underway into RSL NSW by the Australian Charities and not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) is having a major impact on charitable fundraising by the Nelson Bay RSL sub-branch including the traditional sale of poppies by the Nelson Bay RSL Women’s Auxiliary.

Bush Bash for Country Kids

By Marian SAMPSON THE 1969 Dodge tow truck that once raced to jobs in Sydney’s inner city named the Blue Eagle is being lovingly restored to participate in the Country Hope Riverina Redneck Rally Charity bash.

Locals Jared Aldrich and John Querns, are both skippers and hold Marine Engine Driver qualifications and now they are turning their hands to the mechanical restoration of the Blue Eagle.

The Dodge has been in a shed for 15 years and did her last commercial tow in 2002.

The restoration needs to be complete by March 2018 and the Dodge will need to go over the pits before she can be fully road tested.

Jared Aldrich told News Of The Area, “We wanted to do something to help Country Hope who support families and children with life threatening illnesses.”

The Blue Eagle is believed to be the only tow truck entered in the rally which is a field of two-wheel-drive

vehicles and the team has taken on the name ‘The Towy Guys’.

Restoration of the Dodge is underway and the team is busy raising funds for Country Hope.

The target is $2,500 per entry, however The Towy Guys are hoping to raise more.

Moonshadow – TCQ Cruises are on board as a sponsor and corporate sponsorships are being made available with signage opportunities on the Blue Eagle.

The rally will leave Hillston and return to Darlington Point in the Riverina district on 9 March, 2018 with The Towy Guys swapping bilges for sump guards and sea spray for road dust as they travel around 2,500 kilometres over the five days of the rally.

NELSON Bay local, Katrina Harris, is currently at sea with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as part of Operation Manitou.

This is her first deployment to the Middle East and she will return onboard HMAS Newcastle to Sydney in December.

Operation Manitou’s purpose is to contribute to the US-led Combined Maritime Forces, a 31-strong nation partnership.

Their mission is to defeat terrorism, prevent piracy, encourage regional cooperation and promote a safe maritime environment.

Other countries involved include Canada,

Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Republic of Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States The deployment of HMAS Newcastle marks the 65th rotation of a RAN vessel to the Middle East region since 1990.

Katrina, who has been in the Navy since 2012, is a Marine Technician within the Marine Engineering Department and maintains the Adelaide-class frigate’s diesel engines as well as the two rigid-hull inflatable boats used for boarding other vessels.

ship’s boarding party, a role she is very much enjoying.

Speaking to a RAN representative, Katrina said, “We have a great crew on board, which makes it easier to be away from our loved ones and the deployment more enjoyable.”

Looking forward to Christmas and spending the summer with her friends, Katrina can’t wait to have a barbeque at Little Beach, four-wheel driving on Stockton beach and heading to Myall Lakes for a camping trip.

“The last time I visited home was a week before we left on this deployment,” she said.

Katrina has always loved boats and the water so it is unsurprising that it led her to a career in the Navy.

Nelson Bay will welcome

THE title of the latest book

by Medowie historian, author, and school teacher Mrs Yvonne Fletcher, and her co-author Mr John Gillam immediately captures the imagination of potential readers.

“You can’t fight, you’re a girl!” is a picture book that tells the adventure of fearless woman, Maud Butler.

The book presents an accurate historical account of Miss Butler who wanted to contribute to Australia’s involvement in World War I. A rugged woman, she twice stowed away in a ship, dressed as a male soldier so that she, too, could fight in the war.

A woman before her times, she was discovered both times and turned away in a most humiliating way.

She was then rejected from the Red Cross as she was unqualified to work as a nurse.

Author Mrs Fletcher told News Of The Area, “There are very few picture books on this topic that are told from a female perspective.”

“In this book we give voice to a strong woman in Australia’s history to a new generation of readers.”

Hook Line and Sinker

PORT Stephens is a fishing paradise and the Probus Club of Port Stephens has reintroduced the piscatorial activity of fishing for its members.

The fishing outings are being delivered under the guidance of a very enthusiastic David Long who has been doing his homework on suitable secret spots and, of course, the all important tides.

There has been an excellent response by members including a few ladies who are very keen to hook up and land a catch.

David is making the fishing days interesting with lunches, and 4WD bus trips being added to the calendar.

There are also possible plans for an away fishing trip; the list is well thought out and will keep the fishing people very busy.

Fishing Probus Member, David Long told News Of The Area, “Catching a fish is a bit of a lucky dip at times but on our last venture on Friday 13, proved good luck as I landed a decent sized catch.”

Next month, weather permitting, the Probus Club members are off in boats from Soldiers Point after a light lunch at the Boatshed.

“This fishing lark is a very social affair as are all the activities in this friendly mixed-gender club,” he said.

The Probus Club of Port Stephens invites the community to come along to a meeting at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on the second Thursday of the month at 9.30am in the Nelson Room to find out about the great activities that Probus offers.

Turbulent Times for Ngioka

IN what can only be described as a turbulent year for Port Stephens Landcare Groups, the future of The Ngioka Centre and its operations are still causing concern.

The Ngioka Centre is a council-owned facility used for the propagation of endemic species used by local Landcare and environmental groups.

While Port Stephens Council is offering to continue to propagate plants for projects, groups are struggling with a need to pre-order plants 12 months in advance.

Landcare volunteers are now having to propagate their own plants through volunteering at The Ngioka Centre, in addition to their environmental work.

PORT Stephens Council has been selected as a finalist for ‘Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Culture – for big business’ in the 2017 SafeWork NSW Awards.

The awards recognise businesses and workers with the highest standards of workplace health and safety and return to work outcomes in the state.

Peter Matwijow from the Port Stephens Council Parks and Gardens team told News Of The Area, “The Ngioka Centre plant nursery is still functional with plant propagation and nurturing of plants being undertaken by the volunteers under the supervision of the Nelson Bay Parks Supervisor.”

Plants are made available via the committees being pro-active and supplying a list and numbers of plant species required.

“To date we have not received any requests, however Council will not be keeping large stocks as Council is no longer selling plants to the public, this ensures no wastage of plants,” he said.

Job Ready

PORT Stephens Council’s Human Resources Department partnered with the Real Futures Foundation are to run a pilot program in Group Assessments this week.

Group Assessments and working in teams are becoming the norm when applying for jobs, particularly when there are many applicants.

The Council-run workshops included the Year 10 students pre-applying for a position online via the Council website and then participating in a group activity which is similar to the process Council uses when intaking new apprentices, cadets and trainees.

Council staff also gave

students feedback and tips on how to improve their performance in Group Assessments, helping to make them more competitive in the job market.

Michelle Gilliver-Smith, Port Stephens Council Organisation Development Section Manager, told News Of The Area, “When faced with large groups of applicants, organisations use group assessments to assess applicants in a short period of time.”

Ms Gilliver-Smith believes that group assessments is the direction in which the recruitment industry is moving when there are large groups of applicants to consider.

Judy’s win was made all the sweeter with a hole-in-one on the 5th hole.

Judy, having played golf for many years, never having made a hole-in-one was thrilled as she watched her ball roll across the green and disappear into the hole.

However that achievement was eclipsed by her first win in a Medal of Medals competition.

Lantern making workshops

IF you haven’t heard about the Illuminate Boomerang Park Festival coming to Raymond Terrace, then you need to read on and jot down the date and information in your calendar.

The Illuminate Boomerang Park Festival will take place on Saturday 18 November at Boomerang Park in Raymond Terrace.

Port Stephens Council is making sure that all areas of Port Stephens are included in the special event, and have been visiting venues, markets and community groups to run lantern making stalls with locals to bring to the festival.

The latest venue on the list of travelling lantern workshops was Medowie Markets this month.

The hands-on workshop

was a hit, and children and adults alike had a ball making their own lanterns to bring on 18 November.

Penny Amberg, Council’s project coordinator for Illuminate Boomerang Park, told News Of The Area, “Council is delighted to be working with around 15 community groups and our fantastic sponsors, Greater Bank and McDonald Jones

Results of Nelson Bay Bowling Club Fishing FISHING Competition at Lake Glenbawn

ON the weekend of the 20 / 22 Oct, the Nelson Bay Bowling And Fishing Club braved the elements for a weekend of rain, wind and exciting inland fishing at Lake Glenbawn.

The competion was stiff with all anglers keen to take out the inaugural trophy!

Competion fishing started at 6am on Saturday, 21 October morning and continued through to weigh in at 5pm.

The results where based on total length of all legal fish caught.

Rod Denhlom was the first to place his chair on the bank and the first to hook up on competition day.

Craig Mather, took to tje water early as well. He wife Gemma and brother-in-law fished all the dam structures and stayed a little tight lipped about the catch until weigh in.

Mick MacGregor, had a craken Friday night with son Jamie and after a slightly later start than most, fished both the bank and the dam structures with skipper Bluey Asquith.

All competitors enjoyed catching up with the “Stars” around the campfire after they made the long haul from their new digs in QLD. Young Starry peaked early, he caught some great sized fish....... just a day early!

All in all, a fabulous

weekend once the weather cleared, with great fishing, great food and a fun night together Saturday night around the camp fire.

Looking forward to the next time we meet at Forster in March 18.

Tastes at the Bay Ambassador Fashion Parade

TASTES at the Bay has announced their first Ambassador for the upcoming festival from 3-5 November.

Mrs Galaxy Australia 2017 titleholder, Emilie Hardes, has been asked to take on the important role.

The Tanilba Bay mother has been working hard within the community since her national title crowning as Mrs Galaxy Australia 2017 and is ready to take on all the role will entail.

Emilie Hardes told News Of The Area, “I’m really excited to take on this role.”

“What better way to support my community than to get involved.”

“There really will be something for everybody at this year’s festival,” she said.

Emilie will have a long list of responsibilities in this new role, commencing with attending the launch night on Friday night.

Saturday will be a busy day for Emilie, with manning the information stall on Saturday morning, then playing the part of host and

MC Jazz lunch cruise on the Moonshadow 4, and then back to the information tent.

Emilie said, “There’s a new event this year on Saturday that I’m excited about.”

“The new ‘Taster’s Trail’ event will see attendees

treated to tasting plates from five local restaurants, winding up at the Seabreeze Hotel for a finishing cocktail.”

“Port Stephens truly is a foodies heaven, and it’s lovely to see events showcase this,” she said.

By Sarah STOKES FRIDAY 20 October saw the ladies of the Tomaree Hospital Auxiliary take to the catwalk like the superstars they are.

The annual event, in conjunction with donnalou mobile clothes, based in Toukley, raised an amazing $2355 for the Tomaree Hospital.

This was as a result of 107 tickets being sold, plus the proceeds of the raffle and the donation from the clothes purchased.

The fashion parade was held in Nelson Bay at the Senior Citizens Hall in Norburn Avenue and the room was packed.

The ladies had a high tea with beautiful bone china cups and plates, all very decadent.

Some lovely clothes and jewellery were modelled and I have to say, I saw some supermodels in the making.

The proceeds will be going to the hospital to

provide an upgrade to the TV system and the televisions.

The Auxiliary have raised funds for all manner of equipment and are one of the Bay’s bands of everyday heroes.

Pauline Faucett, President of the Tomaree Auxiliary told News Of The Area, “I’d like to thank the ladies for helping to support us. It was a lovely day to buy new clothes, have lunch with friends and raise money for such a worthwhile cause.”

The next fundraising initiative will be the Christmas raffle in the Salamander shopping mall.

Tickets will be available from 8 November and the raffle will be drawn on the 24 November.

Prizes include a hamper, gifts, toys and a cake.

The Tomaree Auxiliary is also open to men if they wish to join.

They meet at 10am on the second Tuesday of each month, except January.
