The Australian Army Band Newcastle consists of approximately 30 members who play a broad range of music, including the ever popular pipes and drums, under the leadership of Captain Mike Fitzpatrick.

With only a short break from service after World War Two and under various

names and configurations, the Australian Army Band Newcastle has existed as Newcastle and the Hunter region of New South Wales’ own Military band since 1861.

The band members are drawn from the local community who, in addition to their normal employment, are talented musicians employed on a part-time basis by the Australian Army.

The band’s main focus involves the support and promotion of the Australian Defence Force units within the

retired great grandfather formed out of a chance encounter at this year’s Tocal Field Days.

While both reside in Medowie, the pair had never met before the Goodwins decided to take the family to the popular field day at Tocal in May. “I was manning the Medowie rural fire brigade stall when Carter – along with mum and dad Sam and Alex, twin Milla and older brother Hudson – came along and I immediately noticed his attraction to a replica model of a fire truck I had constructed years before,” Mr Taylor, who has survived bowel cancer and stroke, recalled.

“Carter just loved the truck so after a while I asked for permission from his parents to build something similar as a gift..

“They approved and I got to work, spending six hours each day for the next week building a model replica Tiger Moth aircraft, based on the training prototypes used during World War Two. “I have grandchildren and great grandchildren of my own and had over 35

“He just broke my heart and the way his eyes lit up the day I presented him with the model plane was something else.

“I received the biggest hugs and kisses.”

For the Goodwin family, the unexpected gift has become one of Carter’s prized possessions.

“We are so grateful for not only the gift but the strong bond that has developed between Bill and Carter,” mum Sam Goodwin said.

“The structure is big enough for Carter to sit in and it is most appropriate for his needs.”

It also allows Carter to forget about the daily grind of physio sessions and strenuous hospital visits.

The Goodwins said they are constantly amazed by the generosity and goodwill of family, friends and strangers from the Medowie community, who continue to support Carter’s needs.

They have set up a facebook page, called Carter’s Crew, to share their journey and hopefully educate and inspire others.

HUNTER Connect is a local charity supporting families touched by Autism.

At their latest meeting, local woman, Lisa Walker, spoke about life with her Autistic husband, Sean.

Sean is no stranger to Autism advocacy and spoke himself recently

about being a latediagnosed Autistic at the age of 42.

Lisa said that it was largely a relationship like any other but as Autistics have a different operating system, she has learned how to work with that and see the many positives as well as the challenges.

Wendy told News Of The Area, “I can’t get over how small and inefficient Tomaree Hospital is with no x-ray facilities; it leaves doctors frustrated and unable to effectively diagnose patients in their care.”

Wendy also expressed real concerns over the volume of bus traffic on Nelson Bay Road and the inability of the current facility to deal with a large scale traffic incident.

Wendy’s elderly neighbour was recently transported to Bulahdelah Hospital and then to Taree Hospital for specialist assessment and x-rays.

Kate Washington member for Port Stephens said, “This is an utterly unacceptable scenario, the community has been calling out for x-ray and ultrasound capacity at Tomaree Hospital for many years now.”

“I’ve also raised it in Parliament, and the government has failed to act; the fact that aged and frail residents are having to travel 2 hours to Taree to get something as simple as an x-ray is disgusting,” “This is what

While Wendy advocates for better equipment and facilities at Tomaree Hospital she praised staff on the quality of care she received which was fantastic.

Often as a result of their children being diagnosed, people are noticing traits in themselves - no surprise as it considered to be largely genetic.

Lisa said that one of the key things is communication and this is where Autistic and Neurotypical (NTs) people differ.

“NTs expect people to know what they mean or imply, whereas Autistic people tend to say what they mean and mean what they say.”

“When they feel misunderstood, it can lead to frustration and in some cases, a meltdown.”

Lisa said that meltdowns have been caused by health professionals not listening or understanding her husband.

“It is key that people listen to Autistics themselves and not talk for them.”

“There can be other triggers to Sean’s meltdowns, such as being too hot and not realising it.”

These sensory issues are common amongst people with Autism and can include regulating body temperature, noise, food sensitivities, lighting, fabrics, touch and crowds.

Lisa has learned how to manage these challenges for Sean through staying calm and supportive, de-briefing after the meltdown and not taking it personally.

A meltdown is the outlet for the sensory overload and reassurance is required not blame.

Sean’s son was diagnosed with Autism and then when he met another adult on the spectrum, everything began to make sense.

Getting the diagnosis allowed him to realise that he wasn’t a bad person, he was Autistic.

He was able to reevaluate his past and process his life in a new light, giving him validation.

Abbott’s tilt at council election

SALAMANDER Bay resident and political aspirant Jaimie Abbott is a fighter.

After failed attempts at both state (preselection only) and federal politics, the 35-year-old RAAF public affairs officer is having her first tilt at local government.

Ms Abbott, who is president of the Port Stephens branch of the Liberal Party, will contest the East Ward seat at the 9 September council election.

She says she is supporting another newcomer, Ryan Palmer, in his bid for mayor and that she was aligned to his views of bringing about fresh new ideas and positive change on Port Stephens Council following years of disharmony.

“I love this community and I believe it deserves better representation than it has been getting,” Ms Abbott said.

“Standing as an Independent gives me the best of both worlds as it means that I am not tied by Liberal

Party policy … it provides me the freedom to debate and vote as I please.

“I can speak on issues form the heart and I will listen to all residents’ points of view, including those of the Greens.

For instance, I support the koala hospital development and the banning of plastic shopping bags.”

A prominent business woman who served for seven years as president of Hunter Animal Rescue, Ms Abbott lists as roads, safe neighbourhoods, Nelson Bay CBD, youth training and live streaming of council meetings as priorities.

She will have her partner Matthew Bailey, 42, and Nelson Bay retiree Diana Souter on her voting ticket.

Mr Bailey has a background in the finance industry, while Ms Souter operated her own business consulting firm before retirement. She is also a former member of Nelson Bay Rotary and sits on the Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association, Council Residents Panel and Port Stephens Probus Club.

‘Grubby politics’ slammed

“THEY must be so worried,” was the response from the Labor Party’s Des Maslen following the furore over the past week involving a couple of Facebook posts and the sabotage of a political sign.

Mr Maslen, who is heading the ALP mayoral and Central Ward councillor tickets, has hit out at his opponents and insists that he won’t be bullied.

He did, however, concede it had been a tough week: firstly with the reaction from a Facebook comment made six years ago while working in Western Australia, and later with the cutting down of an ALP billboard on Nelson Bay Road at Bobs Farm.

“The sign went up on 3 August and just a few days later vandals, most likely political opposers, have used a grinder to cut through the steel posts to knock it down,” the 52-year-old Medowie father-of-three said.

“I can’t believe [whomever did this] would go to such lengths.

“But it won’t deter me or the party, the billboard is going back up but this time with reinforced steel and concrete.”

As for the political backlash over his Facebook posts, Mr Maslen insisted much of what was printed was taken out of context and that he was neither sexist nor homophobic.

“It was a lack of judgement on my part. I have apologized and I am looking forward to moving on.”

Mr Maslen saved his greatest criticism for his political opposers, slamming them for their “dirty pool” tactics.

“They are obviously worried about the impact our party is having on the polls.

“We have said from day one of the election campaign that he will be focusing on local issues and that is what we will continue to do.

“There is no need for the grubby politics,” he told News Of The Area.

Volunteers make Sister City Visit Special

SIX young Japanese exchange students have enjoyed an educational and cultural experience that will give them lots to talk about on their return home.

The girls all in their early teens were accompanied by a teacher, earned their trip to Port Stephens through excelling in a leadership program run

by Yugawara Town Hall.

These trips can be expensive but local voluntary help has not only taken the edge off the cost but enriched the experience.

While in Port Stephens, the students were home hosted by St Philip’s Christian College families and are attending classes at the school.

Fingal Bay Sports Club kindly loaned a bus to transport them to and from Sydney, with a retired coach driver from Shoal Bay behind the wheel.

Nigel Dique told News Of The Area that members of Port

Stephens Sister Cities Committee arranged cultural trips, including a Council visit, tours of Sketchley Cottage and historic King Street in Raymond Terrace, and an Aboriginal cultural program at Murrook Centre.

“We also had a farewell Aussie barbecue at the Nelson Bay Community Arts Centre for the group.”

“A retired Japanese couple residing in Shoal Bay translated information handouts about Port Stephens and Worimi history for the students.”

“It’s heartening to belong to a community that can pitch in to make a visit by keen young kids all the more worthwhile,” he said.

The Sister City program is run through a Port Stephens Council 355C committee which meets regularly.

Protection Sought for Unique Habitat

PROTECTION for Mambo Wanda Wetlands is being sought.

Econetwork in conjunction with other environmentally focused groups are undertaking the process to obtain listing under the Ramsar Convention for the Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

A Ramsar listing of Mambo Wanda has been reenergised after a developer purchased six hectares of Education Department land for $250,000 within the Reserve.

The local community was outraged by the sale.

To gain the Ramsar listing the Mambo Wanda Wetlands will needed broad community support, including that of

private owners.

To be listed the wetlands must meet at least one of nine internationally accepted criteria of wetland dependent biodiversity.

Nigel Dique, secretary of EcoNetwork told News Of The Area that work has begun on having the wetlands considered for nomination as a wetland of International Significance.

“A collaborative working group of stakeholder groups including Mambo Wanda Wetlands, Reserves and Landcare Committee, Econetwork and the Hunter Estuaries program; individuals are also on the group with expertise in bird watching and marine science, this group has been making some progress.”

“We are pursuing the Ramsar listing as an extension of the existing Myall Lakes listing, after receiving guidance from Office of Environment and Heritage, which has confirmed that Mambo Wanda and two

subsets of the Myall, Girum-bit National Park and Corrie Is. Nature Reserve, are hydrologically connected.”

“This makes the

‘extension’ proposal technically feasible,” he said.

‘YOUNG men and women contemplating a career as an Air Force pilot can look forward to years of exhilarating and challenging flying in modern aircraft. It is a job like no other.’

This is the RAAF’s preamble for attracting modern-day recruits, yet it sums up perfectly the fascinating career so far of newly appointed Commander Air Combat Group (ACG), Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Mike Kitcher at RAAF Base Williamtown.

For AIRCDRE Kitcher, who recently took over the reins from the newly promoted Air Vice Marshal Steve Roberton, the rise in rank from officer cadet to one star general has been as unexpected as it has been deserved.

“Aside from a grandfather who fought in World War Two, I had no other family connections to the military so when I joined the Air Force in 1984 there were no specific longterm goals,” the 52-year-old father of three said.

“For me it was an interest in flying which enticed me to join and I have been fortunate to progress through the ranks while doing what I love.

“Having said that I do

take my responsibility as CDR ACG very seriously … my primary role is to ensure ACG delivers the required level of capability whilst looking after the safety and welfare of all ACG personnel. .

“Being in the air and on the ground provides me the opportunity to see first hand the challenges ahead while also allowing me to be better informed and prepared to make better decisions.

“I think it is vitally important that I keep in touch with the real challenges at the coalface, particularly with the impending arrival of the F-35s in 2018.”

AIRCDRE Kitcher has enjoyed a distinguished career both as pilot and instructor, starting at Point Cook and extending to his most recent role as CDR of the RAAF Air Task Group in the Middle East.

AIRDCRE Kitcher’s current platform stretches three States (NSW, Queensland, Western Australia) plus the Northern Territory, three Wings, five Squadrons and thousands of troops.

He will also be involved in the transitioning of the Classic Hornets to the F-35s and be part of a team that overlooks the near-$1 billion in construction and

infrastructure currently being undertaken on the Williamtown base.

And while this may seem like a tall order, the unflappable AIRCDRE Kitcher sees his administerial duties as both “exciting and challenging”.

“I have every confidence in the hard working men and women of the force and the exceptional service they portray day to day.”

AIR Vice Marshall Roberton said that ACG faces busy times ahead as Australia continues to support combat operations in the Middle East.

“AIRCDRE Kitcher will oversee some the final years of operating the classic Hornet, transitioning to new aircraft and new technologies. This transition will need to occur whilst maintaining the government’s high priority of raise, train and sustain ensuring the nation continues to be well placed to defend our interests.”

Becoming a member of the Order of Australia at last June’s Queen’s Birthday awards, AIRCDRE Kitcher was also complimentary of his staff in acknowledging their support.

“I was honoured to receive the medal but I would never have achieved it without the support of my team.”

beneficiaries from the event which organisers hope will become an annual fundraiser.

be holding their Annual Fire Safety Awareness Display in the lead up to this year’s bushfire season at the event.

Inspiring: Daffodil Of Hope ‘Over the Moon’ at news of remission

By Daniel SAHYOUN KYLIE Mather said she was “over the moon” when she found out her daughter’s cancer was in remission.

“When Sophie was diagnosed, the doctors told us she only had a 60 percent chance of beating it,” Kylie said.

“There are no words that can really explain just how happy we felt when we found out she was clear.”

Eleven-year old Sophie was diagnosed with medulloblastoma when she was just seven years old.

She endured six weeks of radiation treatment, followed by six months of heavy chemotherapy.

During treatment, Kylie said the family had to live

apart so Sophie’s brothers and sisters could still attend school.

“I stayed at Ronald McDonald House because we lived so far away, I needed to be close to Sophie,” Kylie said.

“It had a huge impact on the whole family, and still does.”

The Bulahdelah mum of six said although Sophie has beaten the cancer, she still suffers side effects of the radiation treatment.

The Cancer Council estimates that every day more than 350 Australians find out they have a life-threatening cancer, and one in two Australian men and women will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

The survival rate for many common cancers has

increased by 30 percent in the last two decades, but the Cancer Council said there is still a long way to go.

Friday 25 August marks the 31st Daffodil Day in Australia, which gives hope for a future free from cancer.

The Cancer Council hopes to raise $2.1 million to fund vital cancer research, continue their cancer prevention programs and provide support services.

Kylie said she is so thankful for the support her family has received.

“You are just forever grateful for what other people do for you,” she said.

Daffodil Day pins can be purchased from retailers throughout the region to help the Cancer Council’s fight against cancer.

Port Stephens Own Slice of Alice In Wonderland

ONE can’t help but think of Alice in Wonderland, Through The Looking Glass and fanciful flamingos when the topic of croquet is raised.

Perhaps if Lewis Carroll had written his classic fantasies from the bay it would have been pelicans rather than flamingos.

However croquet on the Tomaree Peninsula is a fun and strategic game that people of all ages can enjoy without any repercussions from the Queen of Hearts.

Eighteen members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens stormed the Nelson Bay Croquet Club for another fun session of croquet in brilliant sunshine

this month.

The members of the Probus club were able to learn from the Nelson Bay Croquet Club members who provided coaching and encouragement.

The Probus Club of Port Stephens is active and get into lots of different activities locally.

Ann Gibson told News Of the Area that next month enthusiastic members will tackle the David Grahams Golf and Putt Putt Masters

with a motorhome up for grabs for a holein-one.

“In the meantime there is, bowls to be bowled, and walks to be walked; movies to be watched, fish to be caught and a BBQ to be enjoyed and that is just August for the members of this busy and social club,” she said.

A CEREMONY was held at Marine Rescue Port Stephens, (MRPS), where 18 members of the Unit were recognised for their service and courage.

Recipients of the National Medal; conferred by the Governor General were, Ross Debenham, Ronald Lighton and Paul Farnill and presented by Steve Raymond, Regional Operations Manager for the Hunter, Central Coast, Marine Rescue NSW. The National Medal recognises 15 years of long and diligent service by members of recognised government and voluntary organisations that risk their lives or safety to protect or assist the community in enforcement of the law or in times of emergency or natural disaster.

Lloyd Cropper was presented with his 1st, 2nd and 3rd Clasps for Marine Rescue NSW Long Service Medal representing over 40 years of service.

Deniece Gilliland, Paul Farnill and Russell Craig received the Marine Rescue NSW Long Service Medal for 10 years of service.

Michael Brown was awarded the Commissioner’s Citation for the part he played in the “Excalibur” rescue operation in 2002.

This is one of only seven rescue operations recognised on the Marine Rescue and successor organisations Honour Board.

MRPS received the Unit Citation for Courage and Service in relation to the 2015 “Reef Dragon” rescue operation.

Motor Enthusiasts plan

PLANNING is well underway for next year’s ‘Motorfest’, one of the biggest events on the Hawks Nest calendar.

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Motor Club recently held its Annual General Meeting taking stock after its best ever Motorfest Community Aid Event day back in March.

“The Club has being going from strength to strength

with both an increase in Club runs and an increase in membership with nine new members,” Phil Hoare said.

Committee Members were also nominated and elected.

Juergen Seil remains President, Ranald Mackay, Vice President, Graham Kelly, Treasurer, while Ross Anderson takes over as Secretary.

Mr Seil paid special praise for Phil Hoare who stepped down as Secretary, although he remains the Motor Club’s publicity officer.

John Sharp was thanked for for his commitment to the Club as returning Officer for the Elections.

Following this year’s Motorfest the club was able to donated $9,000 to local community organisation such as the Surf Club, Clinic Bus and Rural Fire Brigade.

This year’s event attracted 355 entries, next year Graham Kelly is hoping to break the 400 mark.

Motorfest 2018 will be held at the Myall Sports Oval Hawks Nest on Saturday 10 March.

Highest Honour For Scout CONSIDERED the highest award any Scout can achieve, the Australian Scout Medallion is only awarded to a select group of individuals who have gone above and beyond the expectations of a regular Scout.

Maddison Woodcock, a Year 9 student, was acknowledged for this dedication, when she was presented the Medallion in front of her teachers, peers, and community members at

Irrawang High School this week.

Her journey towards this exceptional accomplishment has seen her gain many skills.

To be eligible for the Medallion, Scouts must participate in the Green Cord challenge, which is a range of activities to do with advanced camp craft.

Recipients must also fulfil two leadership components: a course and a major activity.

Maddison told News Of The Area, “I have learnt

about many facets of camping, navigation using compasses, topographical maps and the stars and sun, and leadership skills.”

With an extensive knowledge of fire and fuel, safety and survival, and camp cooking and hygiene, she is the person you want around you in an emergency.

Maddison has also completed many hours of community service, such as volunteering doing gardening, Clean Up Australia Day, and Hunter Wetlands maintenance.

Two new constables

THREE Hunter Local Area Commands will welcome five new probationary constables following today’s attestation parade of Class of 331.

Two new probationary constables will each be stationed at Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens LACs with the final probationary constable stationed at the Central Hunter LAC. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC congratulated the new recruits on graduating from the Goulburn Police Academy and thanked them for their commitment to preventing and disrupting crime.

“I would like to welcome our newest officers to the region, and extend

our gratitude to them for devoting their careers to such an honourable cause,” Mr MacDonald said.

“I know the qualifications our officer/s have completed at the Police Academy, together with the on-the-job training they will undertake at the Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Central Hunter Local Area Commands will ensure they are more than adequately prepared to step into this important role.

“Policing can be an extremely challenging profession. Our officers encounter the best and the worst of humanity in the line of duty, so I’m very pleased that our community will benefit from the enthusiasm of five new officers starting their career on the beat.”

Minister for Police Troy Grant said, “The men and women attesting today will bring the number of individuals who have become sworn NSW Police officers since 2011 to 4,163,” Mr Grant said.

“Graduation day gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary commitment and dedication of the men and women who have chosen a career in law enforcement.”

Class 331 includes 226 recruits who have attested as Probationary Constables.

These new recruits will commence on-the-job training on Monday and will continue distance education before graduating with an Associate Diploma in Policing Practice.

A MAN appeared in court this week after he was charged when a car was driven off a boat ramp at Port Stephens.

Police from Port Stephens Local Area Command were called to the Henderson Park boat ramp at Lemon Tree Passage about 7.30pm (Sunday 20 August 2017), after the silver sedan was driven about 15m into the water.

A 34-year-old man allegedly told police he was a passenger in the vehicle and had escaped, but the driver was still trapped.

Multiple resources were called to the scene including the

water police, NSW Ambulance paramedics, SES and Maritime Services.

Two police officers entered the water and attempted to access the interior of the vehicle; however, after numerous attempts, were unsuccessful.

The officers were treated for the effects of hypothermia after spending 20 minutes in the water searching.

Police then winched the submerged vehicle closer to shore and were able to establish there was no one inside.

The man was arrested and

taken for mandatory testing, however he was released pending further inquiries.

About 10.50am (Monday 21 August 2017) police attended a home in Raymond Terrace and arrested the 34-year-old man.

He was conveyed to Raymond Terrace Police Station and subsequently charged with public mischief and breach of domestic violence order.

The man was refused bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday 22 August.

Maddison completed her Scout Leadership Course and First Aid Course in May and undertook her Green Cord requirement of a 30km bushwalk in the July school holidays.

“This hike was from the last section of The Great North Walk which is a trail that begins in Sydney City and ends in Newcastle at the Obelisk.”

“I trekked this last section of the hike with five fellow scouts, including Irrawang High students Matthew Williams and Ella

Ruhl.”

“I was the leader, and each team member carried their own tents, food, water, clothes and equipment for the three days.”

“We completed the hike on our own.”

Maddison also organised a disco as part of the Leadership Activity.

Maddison now moves into the Venturer section for 15 to 18-year old’s and is looking forward to learning new skills.

The Birubi Point SLSC in turn owes a lot to the foresight of predominantly three people – founding members Peter and Shirley

Broadfoot, and president for the past 14 years Rob Duff.

Last June the 69-year-old Duff decided to call in quits, handing over the reins to another longtime committee

member Helen Ratcliffe.

In fact, Ratcliffe is one five females now occupying the club’s head positions alongside vice-president Samantha Farragher,

Duff, a life member, said he would remain involved with the club but believed it was time to allow new blood at the helm.

“When I arrived the club was still in its infancy, there was no baggage, so I was virtually given a free rein in regard to development and growth,” Duff said.

“One of the first things I introduced was to make it known as a family club and to set up an intensive and affordable training program for patrolling members.”

While these strategies have been highly successful, Duff’s true legacy would be overlooking the building of the $4.5 million clubhouse opened in December 2013.

“The clubhouse was a massive effort involving all three levels of government, the Worimi Aboriginal group, NSW Surf Lifesaving, the Anna Bay community, and our friends at EJE Architects.”

From humble beginnings

in the 1990s, the Birubi club has grown considerably with a membership of more than 300 patrolling and junior members.

The newly elected president, a 48-year-old Corlette mother-of-two, says she is excited to be taking over a facility in great shape.

“My job is to maintain the momentum started by the Broadfoots and pushed along by Rob. “We intend to keep up the training, the bronze medallions while continuing to attract junior members to the weekly meetings and their families.

“Our major objective is to patrol the beach during the summer months, hence the need for training. Being the most qualified club in the Hunter is something we are immensely proud of.”

And the proof is in the pudding. Each season the club performs numerous rescues and preventative measures to ensure the safety of the swimming public.

Registrations for the 2017/18 season are now available online, with the season set to kick off on Sunday, 17 September.

Daniel Evans wins a tough NSW Title

PORT Stephens now has a new champion in its midst after home grown local Daniel Evans took out the NSW Amateur 71 kg Boxing title last week.

Residing in Karuah, the 24 year old won his bout against Sydney opponent Oscar Doane in a unanimous decision at the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

“At the stare down before the fight started, I had a lot of crowd support but looking into his eyes, he wasn’t intimidated at all so I knew he was going to be tough,” Daniel told News Of The Area.

Girls cricket

comes to the Bay

By Charlie ELIAS CRICKET is the latest sport in Port Stephens to take advantage of the massive interest driving competitive female sport across the nation.

Last season the Nelson Bay Makos cricket club fielded seven junior teams plus the Milo’s (5-8 years girls and boys).

This season the club is looking to add at least one, possibly two, teams by competing in the Newcastle girls cricket league in the 13 and 16 years age groups. It will be the first time the club has fielded a girls-only team.

Coach and committee member Wayne Banks said recruitment for girls aged up to 16 years had already begun in earnest.

“We have a number of girls already registered and are recruiting for female cricketers interested in joining a team,” he said.

“There are no requirements and girls do not have to have had any previous experience, they are welcome to come along CONTINUED Page 16
