ANNA Bay’s facelift is continuing with approval for a $200,000 injection of funds going towards the redevelopment of Anna Bay Skate Park.

The decision formed part of determinations at the Ordinary Council Meeting on June 13 for the allocation of $6 million of the Port Stephens Council loan.

Nine projects across Port Stephens will receive funding

including the Yacaaba Street extension valued at $1.5 million and Shoal Bay drainage works valued at $500,000.

The decisions come after council resolved on 14 February to borrow $6 million for infrastructure projects to be determined by Council.

Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan said the Anna Bay Skate Park was an “important recreational facility” for young people in the area and the current skate park needed replacing for CONTINUED Page 2

There are also funds now available to improve the local park (Robinson Reserve), which is on Worimi land.

Cr Doohan told News Of The Area that Council was still negotiating the park’s renovation.

“If arrangements don’t move forward at the current site, we will use those funds towards a park in another

location within Anna Bay,” Cr Doohan said.

Cr Doohan indicated that he was “very keen to work with locals and the Worimi people regarding the new Anna Bay Skate Park”.

Anna Bay has seen major infrastructure improvements in recent years that are gradually eroding the ‘poor cousin’ tag.

The major redevelopment of the Surf Club facility at Birubi Beach has been followed by the commencement of preliminary works at the new Lifeguard Facility at One Mile Beach.

THE Action Club of Nelson Bay has upped the ante this year, with an additional winter warmer pack to be donated to a fourth local charity.

The packs include queen size comforter set, fleece blanket and flannelette sheet set, plus two sets of the above for single beds.

Finance officer Pauline Troon told News Of The Area, “The organisation felt that we could do more this year for those who struggle through the winter months, and by providing an extra full set we can help another family, of course the packs can be split up, it is up to the charity

to decide the best way to distribute them.”

The Yacaaba Centre, St Vincent De Paul Society, Salvation Army and All Saints Op Shop were the recipients this year.

Sue Hughes, St Vincent De Paul Conference member said, “Special thank you from us, for the kind donations, the packs will certainly help those in need of warmth this winter.”

The Action Club is available to offer assistance with small jobs, an initial assessment, which determines the need, and if the Club has the necessary resources and expertise to assist, if not, they will do their utmost to redirect to the

Jane Perrin, Economic Development Unit Manager at Port Stephens Council, told News Of The Area, “The forecasted 50 plus new jobs would include retail, professional services and food services.”

“It is lovely to see industries such as hospitality, retail and health service businesses create not only good services for the region, and jobs but a flow-on effect into the local economy,” she said.

A new set of traffic lights will also be installed at the entry to Town Circuit from Bagnall Beach Road to make access to both shopping precincts safer for motorists and pedestrians.

QUIETLY beavering away in the Bay is a band of dedicated volunteers making people’s stay at Tomaree Community Hospital a more comfortable experience.

In existence since the 1950s, when the hospital was in its old location near the Community Arts Centre, the Tomaree Auxiliary currently has 53 members.

These unsung heroes raise money in order to purchase much needed equipment for the hospital.

In recent times, they have enabled the purchase of two slings for patient moving devices, two air pressure mattresses, two lift chairs, easy access shelving for the pharmaceutical room plus many other items.

They also supply patients with sleepwear, toiletries and make knitted toys for children.

Each year brings five main fundraising events: two

large raffles, Easter Craft Street Stall, Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings and a Fashion Parade in October.

The local community also provide kind donations.

All monies raised stay with the Tomaree Hospital to improve the facilities for the local community.

The Auxiliary currently has one of its raffles in full swing with a stall in the

PORT Stephens Community Arts Centre is going big.

The Think Big exhibition is being held from 14 - 25 June and entry is free.

Twenty local artists’ large scale canvases will be on display showing that local talent is more than up for the challenge of adorning the walls of both new and established homes.

Alongside the large scale canvases, visitors to the arts centre will find woodwork, quilts, and crafts.

The centre’s cafe is also open on weekends and all proceeds from the cafe go towards supporting the centre and its members.

The Area, “This is an unusual event as the centre normally commits to displaying as many members’ works as possible and in the Think Big exhibition the centre is displaying works which are an exception to the rule.”

“The centre is aiming to showcase the talents and abilities of artists able to create large artworks as this is what many people are looking for in their homes now.”

“While the centre has 400 plus members, it is seeking new members and is offering three trial sessions at a range of workshops. If you are interested in developing your art skills, a visit to the centre could be the right start,” he said.

Clean Eats and Healthy Treats in Stockton Street is another participating cafe.

The cafes receive a vintage-style poster, an information sheet outlining the issue, and twice yearly statistics on how the incentive

is working.

Responsible Cafes is a volunteer group run by cafe owners, coffee drinkers and interested citizens.

Jacqui Hibbert, coowner/manager of the Paper Rose Cafe said that they are offering a 50 cent discount for people who bring a reusable cup.

A range of reusable cups are on order for customers to purchase, though customers can bring their own.

Jacqui says that she was inspired by the ABC programme ‘War on Waste’ to launch the new initiative.

They have promoted it through their Facebook page and report that customers are picking up on the idea.

Along the road at Gloria Jeans, Krysten Ciampi told News Of The Area, “We have been selling our own brand reusable cups for 13 years but since the ‘War on Waste’ show, we have been accepting any cup.”

The family-run business also offers a 50 cent discount to customers and has similarly seen increased awareness in the initiative.

Hopefully more cafes will get on board to bring a new meaning to BYO.

Food Glorious Food

FOOD technology students in Year 10 from Tomaree High School got a taste of what it is like to work in hospitality last week.

Twenty-nine students catered to 150 attendees at the launch of the Blue Water Country Music Festival.

This is a new area of learning which offers a taste of hospitality for students before they choose their senior electives.

The idea behind the unit gives students a taste of senior courses, giving them insights into further studies in hospitality.

The student were

assessed on their team work, ability to produce menu items for a large scale function using principles of hygiene and workplace safety throughout the task.

Head Teacher of Hospitality Karen Shaw told News Of The Area that this is a good pathway for our students in Nelson Bay, as tourism and hospitality are large local employers.

“Even if students don’t choose hospitality as their profession, they can always use these qualifications to work their way through university or TAFE,” she said.

Bob Westbury, Vice Chair of the Real Futures Foundation congratulated

the students on their professionalism on the night.

“The food was to a very high standard and the students were positive ambassadors for the school and our community,” he said.

Tomaree Business Chamber President Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “I think the students did a fantastic job, it is great to see that real life work is integrated into the learning that students are doing.”

“Many people commented how good the food was.”

“They did an excellent job and offering this type of experience to youth is another benefit of holding festivals and events,” he said.

President Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “The Probus Club of Port Stephens is a social organisation of mixed gender for retired and semi-retired couples and singles.”

“Fun, Fellowship and Friendship is the credence for Probus Clubs and many activities are organised for the participation and enjoyment of members.”

“Port Stephens Probus Club offers dining, day trips, stage shows in Sydney, barbecues, impromptu picnics, walking groups, bowls (social and competitive),

croquet and golf fun days.

There is snooker for the boys and fishing and club darts are also in the pipeline.

The aim of the club is to welcome new friends and include them in the family atmosphere.

Social interaction and inclusion makes for a lot of happiness and contentment, particularly if retirees are new to the area.

The club meets on the second Thursday of the month, 9.30am at Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

Probus and All That Jazz

THE fifth annual ladies lunch for the Probus Club of Port Stephens saw 65 ladies celebrating at the “All That Jazz” themed occassion.

President Ann Gibson and a team organised the lunch at Baroque in Nelson Bay. Raffles and entertainment along with a great vibe made the event something rather special.

Members are encouraged to bring a friend or two along to share the day.

Winter Wonderland Golf Brings Dollars to Bay

By Marian SAMPSON THE Winter Wonderland Golf Tournament was held over the June long weekend.

The Tournament attracted 153 players from outside the region who all

stayed and contributed to the economy of our region.

Tomaree Business Chamber President Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area that the tournament which was held at Nelson Bay Golf Club gives a small boost to the local economy as the players

all enjoy food and drinks in local businesses.

“Some travelled from as far afield as Cobar to participate,” he said.

While the players in the morning got a little wet, the day cleared and the competition was strong.

Dear Ms PK,

The teen and early post-teen years are such a joy.

There are cotton-buds, clogged up with goodnessknows-what body fluid, to remove from the sink.

There are discarded wet towels that seep into the shag pile carpet giving it that lovely tropical dengue fever potential.

There’s the intriguing dinner-table conversation that centres around your own mid-life crisis and their total inability to empathise because they are too busy changing their image into a vampire on Snapchat and saying things like “whatevs” or “lit” or “soz” or “savage”.

And then there’s that mad rush from the table as soon as the meal is over so you are left with a pile of dirty dishes and a migraine from trying to keep up with the millennial lingo.

What’s not to like?

Having kids is a rite of passage and even if you are unable or unwilling to have your own, there’s always a solution so you are able to reach the final stage of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Some call it self-actualisation.

I prefer to call it self-flagellation.

Give it a whirl, Ms PK. You may find this young man fulfils a need you never knew you had.

If not, his psychology training should be able to assist you to work through your deep-seated aversion to all kids great and small.

You can trade washing his clothes for psychoanalysis.

In the WiFi Zone

NELSON Bay and Raymond Terrace city centres are set to get a technological boost with the news that approval was given at last week’s council meeting to install a trial of free WiFi in their respective CBD areas.

Deputy Mayor Cr Chris Doohan told News Of The Area, “This project and trial has been a long time coming, and will have so many benefits for residents and visitors to our beautiful Port Stephens.”

“If we want to roll with the big dogs, with our massive tourist draw card, we need to get with the times and give this community the positive progress that it deserves.”

“The benefits are so much more than the social media side of things, and will be such a valuable asset to our beautiful Port Stephens,” he said.

Aside from allowing people to check in on Facebook, post pictures to Instagram, or send that essential email, there are many other benefits to having a free public WiFi zone.

In recent years, Port Stephens has been through

catastrophic fires and the superstorm event.

With both these recent events knocking out power across a widespread area, the benefits of a public WiFi system would have been considerable.

It does not take much power to make sure a public WiFi system is still running, with a small generator or solar panel capable of doing the trick.

In addition, using the software to control the zone, the zone’s administrator can add information to a page viewed initially by anyone using the WiFi zone, which could easily be used as a means to spread information about where to volunteer or get help, what roads are closed, and what supplies are needed.

Tourism and town promotion is also set the benefit from the new trial.

A town with free WiFi gives extra motivation for visitors to stop and explore.

The zone can be set up so that a landing page is seen by everyone using the zone, directing users to a calendar of town events, a listing of local eateries, and a page on things to do.

Ryan Palmer, president of the Nelson Bay Chamber of Commerce, told News Of The Area, “Public WiFi in both Raymond Terrace And Nelson Bay as a trial will be a great start to bringing Port Stephens business districts up to speed with other East Coast communities.”

Funds Raised for Councillor Dover Declares Breast Cancer Support She Will Run

By Marian SAMPSON CANCER patients are faced with many challenges.

Many don’t think of the costs of getting to and from treatment but the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group acknowledges this cost.

The service assists patients by taking them to hospital for treatments as well as the costs associated with changes in daily life.

In May alone, sixty-five drives were made from the peninsula to hospitals in Newcastle, Maitland and Lake Macquarie for ladies to receive treatment and to attend medical appointments.

In addition, the service arranges free of charge house

cleaning, lawn mowing, child minding, counselling and any other practical assistance possible after major surgery.

Sri Malaysia Restaurant in Nelson Bay was abuzz with fifty appreciative diners tucking into a gourmet Malaysian buffet last Sunday night.

Taurie Lalor, president of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, told News Of The Area, “Without the support of the community, we would be unable to provide the services which we do to ladies undergoing treatment for breast cancer.”

“We believe that ladies have enough to face without having to drive back from appointments which often

leave them ill and drained, so we provide volunteer drivers for them.”

“It’s often small things which can make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families, if we can help by overcoming small hurdles it makes it easier for them to focus on getting well again,” she said.

The fundraiser for the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group was hosted at Sri Malaysia Restaurant by proprietor Jade Ong and her husband, chef extraordinaire who donated all the food and their services.

Over $2,000 was raised on the night.

Chamber ask of Council on Music Festival

the organising committee were very pleased that visitors came and that locals got out and about to enjoy the entertainment despite the weather.

“The main ticketed events were booked out including the Beccy Cole concert and the Viper Creek Band show, and the cruises were well received and the feedback was positive,” he said.

“The committee is seeking some fee relief from council as the cost to access Apex Park and close part of Stockton Street is high,” Mr Clough told News Of The Area.

In an open letter to the community, the Chamber stated that, “It is also important to note that the Chamber at best aims to just break even for this event which we believe is for the benefit of local Port Stephens businesses and the profile of Port Stephens as a destination which in turn enhances employment opportunities.”

Mr Clough said, “It is unlikely that we will be able to cover costs made more difficult by Council applying charges of approx. $4,700 for use of Apex Park and the CBD of Nelson Bay .”

The committee has already committed to 2018 when it will be time to once again ‘don our denim’, and kick up our heels to some great country music.

PORT Stephens Council elections are fast approaching.

East Ward Councillor Sally Dover has declared that she will run for Council again in 2017.

Sally Dover was first elected to Council in 2004 and has been a passionate community advocate.

Working to ensure the best outcomes for Port Stephens residents, Sally said she is keen to finish many projects that she has helped get off the ground.

Humans Of The Area: Meet Bob Westbury

MOST locals in the Bay know Robert (Bob) Westbury as a former councillor and mayor for Port Stephens.

Most won’t know just how much Bob has done for our community over the years, or that he has completed in 26 Bridge to Bridge Waterskiing races.

When Bob left school,

he became an apprentice butcher.

At one time he owned the Woolpack Hotel in Parramatta and El Toro in Liverpool.

On arriving at the Bay, Bob purchased the Marina Resort at which time he joined the Tourism Operators of Port Stephens (TOPS) which subsequently became Port Stephens Tourism and is now Destination Port Stephens where he served as Chairman

Serving on the committee of Nelson Bay Town Management and the Nelson Bay and District Business Chamber, Bob has worked on improvements of the township of Nelson Bay. Bob is a vice chairman of the Real Futures Foundation, making positive differences to at youth risk in Port Stephens.

He has been proactive in bringing programs to local youth that help them gain skills and employment.

Bob also served on the Tomaree Community College and Salamander Bay Recycle Centre committees.

Bob has worked tirelessly to secure the futures of the homeowners on the Horizons Golf Resort where his efforts have seen the course under new management and flourishing.

Bob Westbury told News Of The Area that giving to the community has been a whole lot of tough love.

“My family and I really love the place, the people and the opportunities that are here.”

“I love that there are great opportunities for people to come here and start a business and there are also great opportunities for our local youth.”

Ferry Disappointed OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, HOW disappointed I am with the current state of the Tea Gardens-Nelson Bay Ferry service.

I recently planned to take a New Zealand visitor to Nelson Bay for a few hours.

On arriving for the

10am ferry we were told it would be the last return trip of the day from Tea Gardens, giving us only 15 minutes in Nelson Bay with no discount on the ticket price offered.

Considering the ferry, with its chance to see dolphins, is one of the main attractions of our area, it

is very disappointing that the service is now so unreliable as to be almost useless.

I know I’m not alone in my frustration and I hope something will be done about this.

Olympian Trains Hockey Hopefuls

JUNIOR Hockey players in Nelson Bay are trained by former Olympian Kate Jenner.

Once a fortnight the hockey players of all ages descend on the sports fields at

Salamander Bay and engage in training sessions with Kate Jenner who represented Australia at the Olympics in 2012.

The training sessions include basic skills and building the players up to be their best.

Kate Jenner told News Of The Area that she is motivated

to work with young people to improve their skills because they are the future of the sport.

“I started playing hockey at around eight years old and was proud to represent Australia at the Olympics in 2012; I have now moved on to coaching throughout the Hunter, Central Coast,

Gropers & Marauders

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE highly anticipated day of Premier Rugby arriving in Port Stephens didn’t disappoint, with Nelson Bay Gropers and Medowie Marauders working together to provide an impressive day of televised Premier Rugby after their recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that sees them effectively supplementing the Gropers’ top teams.

The Premier Rugby day was hosted by the Marauders home ground, and there were wins across the board, through all grades, sealing a clean sweep for the day.

Premier 2 saw the Marauder-supplemented Gropers take on Waratah.

Without a win this season for the Gropers, and with an overheard comment from a few local Waratah insiders that they would be giving the Gropers a bit of a touch up, the end result was nothing short of impressive.

The Nelson Bay Gropers smashed Waratah in a very comprehensive first win of 50-5.
