Bay Celebrates Biggest Morning Tea

BAY locals gathered and shared for the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. A fundraising event was held at the Little Beach Boathouse raising vital funds in the fight against cancer.

Alicia Cameron of Little Beach Boathouse told News Of The Area, “Little Beach Boathouse and A Beautiful Occasion were proud to host a Biggest Morning Tea event on Thursday 25 May.” “It was a beautiful morning, 61 locals attended the event, with a total of $1000 raised for the Cancer Council.”

Now in its 24th year, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of the Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia.

The event is held in support of the one in two Australians who will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85.

Hunter Region, said that every morning tea makes a difference.

“Every dollar raised at the morning tea events make a huge difference in the lives of local people living with cancer,” Mr Connell said. $15 allows the Cancer Council to provide easy-tounderstand information on treatments, practical advice and emotional support to cancer patients and their families. $50 makes sure there’s a cancer nurse available on 13 11 20 to offer information and support to callers.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to take the survey and make comment on specific areas where they would like to see change in the Tomaree Peninsula.

Dolphin Census was a great success.

An impressive 86 dolphins were sighted throughout the morning of the census, included a few well knowns.

Favourite, a female estimated to be in her 20s, was spotted near Fly Point with her juvenile, PS057, and two-year-old calf, Brett.

Our largest male alliance, nine dolphins, was seen by vessels, socialising near the jet ski area outside Nelson Bay Marina.

The same pod is regularly sighted surfing at Newcastle and Merewether beaches.

This encounter, with 13 dolphins, was the largest pod encounter.

The highest shore sightings were recorded off Fishermans Bay, where 10 were sighted and Barnes Rocks where nine were spotted.

WALKERS of the Tomaree Peninsula are being asked to give feedback on the latest Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) for the region.

Residents and visitors alike can share their thoughts with Council about the current pedestrian facilities and the future needs of pedestrians in the area.

The plan will cover the towns of Anna Bay, Boat Harbour, Corlette, Fingal Bay, Fishermans Bay, Nelson Bay, One Mile, Salamander Bay, Shoal Bay, Soldiers Point and Taylors Beach.

John Maretich, Port Stephens Council’s Asset Section Manager, says this process will add further

detail to Council’s existing strategy around pathways, with particular focus on better accessibility for all.

“We’re hoping residents and visitors to the Tomaree area will undertake the survey and make comment on specific areas where they would like to see change,” Mr Maretich said.

“From this, Council will prioritise future works to meet the needs of the community.

“The plan will then be used by Council to apply for grant funding from government bodies such as Roads and Maritime Services.”

A YOUTH leadership program based in Port Stephens has inspired and motivated youth at Tomaree High School.

The Real Futures Foundation Ambassador program at Tomaree High School is about taking on leadership and developing skills.

The program is designed to motivate, inspire and engage the Real Futures Foundation ambassadors.

The leadership training conducted in May at Pacific Blue Resort in Salamander Bay focused on assisting the students with communication skills and working with others.

The leadership training was facilitated by national and international presenter Heidi Alexandra Pollard, CEO of UQ Power.

The Foundation’s student ambassadors completed a personal communication style inventory (PCSI) recently, learning that these differences exist

Bay Dancers Winners at Eisteddfod

SEQUINS, tutus, and makeup: the essential trappings for Eisteddfods.

Nelson Bay Dance students have added wins at the Winter Eisteddfod to the year’s successes.

Competing at three Dance Eisteddfods so far this year, the girls and boys who train at Taylors Beach have added to their long list of awards with more success at each Eisteddfod.

At last weekend’s Winter Eisteddfod, wins for Robyn Yvette Dance Studio students included seven first, five second and four third place awards.

The places were in all genres of dance including classical ballet, jazz, modern, contemporary, tap and musical theatre.

They have also won many awards at the Ritz and Glitz Eisteddfods in Newcastle and the Taree Eisteddfod held earlier this year.

The dancers excelled, taking out the trophy for highest point score for an open tap group at the Taree Eisteddfod which is one of the largest Eisteddfods held in NSW with over 2,000 competitors performing

Lance Woods for Robyn Yvette Studio told the News Of The Area, “It is great to see

the trophy for the Highest Point score for the second year in a row.

As always the dancers wore a range of brightly coloured sequin studded costumes and stage makeup to enhance the visual impact

of their performances.

The dance students have just two more Eisteddfods to compete in during this term and then will be focusing on their up and coming ballet and tap exams.

LOCAL residents can relive childhood memories of Charlie Brown and see our young performers grace the stage with Jasmine Phipps from Corlette and Jack Twelvetree from Medowie in the upcoming production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” at the Young People’s Theatre in Hamilton.

Charlie Brown is being played by 19-year-old Jack Twelvetree.

Charlie’s gang, which of course includes Snoopy, get up to many antics such as chasing rabbits and singing with Schroeder.

Sally, played by 15-yearold Jasmine Phipps, discovers a new philosophy.

The gang will have you singing along, laughing at

their antics and tapping your toes.

Directed by Riley McClean and Cassie Hamilton, the production is for people of all ages.

Whether you are an old Peanuts fan or just embarking on a new adventure, this show will surely appeal.

Jasmine and Jack are not new to the stage.

Jack was in YPT’s production of The Crucible to sell out houses, and Jasmine has been in many shows starting at the tender age of eight in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

She has been in many productions since then, including Godspell.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown runs from 9

June to 23 June with both matinee and night shows.

The Young People’s Theatre is a not-for-profit organisation that helps aspiring actors to develop skills in acting, costuming, stage construction, directing and lighting.

After performing with the Young People’s Theatre, students have progressed to theatrical roles with renowned drama schools such as the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA).

Golf Club Rises from Ashes

THE $10 million resurrection of Nelson Bay Golf Club’s clubhouse is on track and on budget according to sales and marketing manager Natalie Kelly, with the facility due to open at the end of July.

The former clubhouse was engulfed by flames on Father’s Day 2015, but the venue has risen from the ashes in spectacular style with the new development featuring a 200 seat function centre, dedicated sports bar, courtyard and children’s play area, as well as retail space and an outdoor wedding ceremony site.

The familiar Bluewater Grill will be relocated into the clubhouse and the Moses Pro Shop will continue to operate within the new clubhouse.

The extensive renovation and rebuild has been facilitated by Club Projects

Newcastle, EJE Architecture and Coffey Project Management.

During the transition, a demountable building has housed the club and its administration services.

“We have lost social members as we have been unable to host functions, but the playing members have continued to be great supporters of the club,” Ms Kelly said.

“We are confident that once the new clubhouse is complete, our social members will return.”

The new development offers a more holistic approach to members and guests.

“It is a community-based club, and the wide range of facilities for people of all ages reflects that,” Ms Kelly said.

“We want everyone to feel welcome.”

The theme of keeping

it within the community will also be emphasised when Nelson Bay Golf Club commences a recruitment drive for a range of positions including food and beverage staff and administrative staff.

Although the fire was devastating, it did not affect the stunning 27-hole golf course, or the club’s popular kangaroo tours.

“The Nelson Bay Golf Club stands out because it provides a tranquil experience for golf seven days a week, as well as offering centre-of-town accessibility,” Nelson Bay Golf Club general manager Trevor Harrison said.

Upcoming events include the official opening week including the Family Open Day on Sunday 27 August, and the Coca Cola Nelson Bay Pro Am featuring PGA professional Peter Lonard on Thursday 7 September.

THE Art Shack in Salt Ash has evolved to where it is today from humble beginnings and a story of healing by its owner Deborah Parker.

Deborah’s art began when she was 27 years old, after surviving a mishap that resulted in a disability.

Deborah was introduced to art through a friend, where she then began studying drawing, pastels, acrylic and oil painting. Art became a best friend for Deborah, and a form of therapy during her healing.

Deborah ran an artrelated business for 15 years in Melbourne.

She was also painting and selling her artwork through retail outlets all over Australia, before eventually relocating to Port Stephens 13 years ago.

Deborah now focuses her artistic passions and

enthusiasm on running parttime art classes for children and adults, including those with disabilities.

Deborah has since studied art therapy and special needs teaching, focusing on helping others to heal and discover hidden artistic talents.

Deborah told News Of The Area, “Over the years, I have noticed the amazing ability that art has to help build self confidence, relieve stress and help with mental health.”

Deborah runs art classes at the Art Shack in Salt Ash after school hours, and adult classes by appointment.

She also runs classes at the Tomaree Library (Salamander) after school, and school holiday art programs on the farm where children can pat, feed and observe the animals and engage in art activities.

Workshop from Lifeline

PORT Stephens people who have lost someone to suicide will have an opportunity, in a supported environment, to learn skills to be able to share

their story.

Lifeline Hunter Central Coasts’ new Suicide Speaker Bureau is being offered for the first time in Port Stephens

on 5 June.

The free, one day, skillsbased workshop has been developed by Lifeline’s local community manager Robyn Lawrence. It was piloted in Newcastle earlier this year.

Ms Lawrence said the workshop will equip participants with information and confidence to safely tell their story and share memories of their loved one.

She said two highly trained and experienced facilitators will gently take participants through a process with lots of love and support.

“It is important for people to be able to share their story because it can help take the anxiety out of having conversations with people,” Ms Lawrence said.

“There are some important dos and don’ts when speaking about suicide to help protect the storyteller as well as the listener,” she said.

“It is part of the grieving process and beneficial for other people to feel they can have an open conversation with a bereaved person.”

THE Tomaree Peninsula Branch of the Country Labor Party recently hosted a function that included special guest speaker Dr Kelvin Kong, Australia’s first indigenous surgeon.

Dr Kong, who was born and raised in Port Stephens, is an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist with a particular interest in indigenous health and the educational impact of ear infections among aboriginal children.

Dr Kong is also an Associate Professor and mentor at the University of Newcastle.

Dr Kong presented a fascinating address to the guests outlining the medical and surgical advancements in the treatment of ear, nose and throat issues.

Guests at the wellattended function, held at the Soldiers Point Yacht Club, included representatives of the Hunter Valley and

Port Stephens communities, industry and employee organisations as well as many past and present Labor politicians.

First of all, you need to spend your entire life striving to get the very best marks in school, until you get to Year 10, at which point you should disregard everything that you have been ruthlessly working towards and instead go clubbing in Oxford Street (shave your head and wear a kimono for good measure.

Although, that may be harder now that they have that annoying little photo ID requirement).

Then, instead of enrolling in the Bachelor of Communication Studies that you somehow got the marks for, go to Europe and pretend that the world is your croissant.

Forget that these are your formative years in terms of finding your life-long career, and hang out on the ski slopes and drink Schnapps.

Next, come home and start a relationship with the local equivalent of Hando from Romper Stomper.

Don’t be content to hang out with a bad boy, have his child as well.

Then, spend about 10 years in dead-end jobs such as shrink-wrapping pallets of health food products and working for perverts in the hospitality industry.

Finally, land a job finding jobs for people and, after many years in this satisfying career, end up redundant when the government changes guards (oh, the irony).

Go to university, right up to PhD level, and become so qualified that no one will employ you.

Drink copious quantities of ‘woe is me’ vodka and, with so much life experience and many qualifications, get a job as an Agony Aunt.

As that dear little meerkat says, “Simples”.

“Speaking groups have helped people to communicate better for years so we have taken that concept to help local people to safely speak about their experience off loss to suicide.”

Ms Lawrence said helping people to talk about suicide breaks down the stigma around suicide that still exists in the community.

She said reducing stigma is important for tackling Australia’s suicide emergency.

Suicide rates are at a 10 year high with around 3,000 deaths annually. Suicide rates are double the national road toll.

Lifeline and Ports Stephens Suicide prevention Network also run a Survivors of Suicide (SOS) support group on the fourth Monday of the month at Tomaree Library.

The workshop is free thanks to funding from Primary Health Network – Hunter, New England and Central Coast. People interested in attending should call 4940 2000 or email reception@lifelinehunter.org. au.

Whale of a View

THE first humpback whale of the 2017 whale watching season has been sighted.

Moonshadow’s Crew Member Evie and Captain, Terry could not contain their excitement when they spotted the young whale two miles offshore between Boondelbah and Little Island.

There have been whispers of sightings over the past weeks with whales spotted off the South Coast of NSW. The official whale watching season commences on Saturday 20 May through till 5 November 2017.

Mel Turner, a member of the Naturefest organising committee, told News Of The Area that “Naturefest is an annual event showcasing all that Port Stephens has to offer in the nature arena.”

The launch of the whale watching season and the ‘Human Whale’ are highlights on the program.

“This year’s ‘Human Whale’ will be a World Record attempt and will be held at Fingal Bay,” Ms Turner said.

There are various whale watch cruise options to see whales including viewing them from the land at Birubi Point and Fingal Bay.

Seeing whales in Port Stephens is a must for locals and visitors alike and it is always exciting to see these wonderful creatures grace us with their presence.

The launch of the whale watching season is just one part of Port Stephens Naturefest which celebrates all things in nature in our coastal paradise.

Approximately 22,000 humpbacks pass Port Stephens on their 12,000km migration every year.

The whales are now heading north, passing Port Stephens as they head to a warmer climate to give birth to their young.

CORRIDORS for koalas are being created across Salamander Bay, in an effort to support our furry friends.

The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage has allocated the koala to the iconic management stream of Saving our Species because of its significant social, cultural and economic importance, and to meet community

expectation that koalas are effectively managed and protected.

Safe passage for koalas in Port Stephens is a significant issue, especially during the mating season.

Koalas are also threatened by domestic dogs and cats when on the ground, not to mention the hazards associated with moving near busy roads.

The initiative of the Port

Stephens Council Tomaree Peninsular Urban Koala Corridor Enhancement Planting Project has been designed to protect the Bay’s koala population, Eucalyptus saplings are to be planted in targeted reserves and streets over a three year period as a part of this Council initiative.

World Champion Muay Thai Athletes

IT IS not everyday you have world class Muay Thai athletes in Port Stephens.

Sinapayak, Trainer/ Pro-Fighter, former World Champion and GwarngNgern, Trainer/Pro-fighter and former top ten stadium fighter, gave a hands-on training session at PT Fitness on Saturday, followed by an incredible demonstration of some of their skills.

Andrew Parnham, Head Trainer at PTJ Muay Thai, in Sydney, said, “Sharing our knowledge and ethos of the sport is a great way to encourage people to be involved.”

“Martial Arts is about having a healthy lifestyle, surrounding yourself with positive people and mentors, which then lends itself to having a positive attitude, self-confidence and mental discipline.”

Praise for Dementia Support OPINION Dear News Of The Area, I would like to thank the community for their fantastic show of support during our Hunter Memory Walk & Jog event.

More than 1,400 people walked or ran with almost $40,000 so far been raised by participants, with all funds raised going towards dementia support services in the Hunter region.

In the Myall Lakes, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Upper Hunter state electorates there is estimated to be 6,950 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 8,800 people by 2025 and 15,400 by 2056.

Those who participated in Memory Walk & Jog can be confident that the money

they raised will have a direct and positive impact for the members of our community who are living with dementia.

I would like to thank the Hunter community and our many volunteers for their ongoing contribution, as well as our Ambassador Sam Poolman for generously giving up her time to be part of the event. It simply would not be possible to host Memory Walk & Jog without their support.

I would also like to acknowledge our major supporter Opal Aged Care for their generous assistance this year.

Planning has already begun for the next Hunter Memory Walk & Jog and we hope to be able to build on this year’s excellent result.

Over 500 Riders

By Mandy ELLIS FROM dedicated world class riders to the weekend warrior, the Port to Port Mountain Bike Ride is is an annual event building momentum each year.

Fifteen countries and out of region riders represent 70 percent of this year’s Port to Port Mountain Bike Ride.

The event is broadcast to 132 countries and watched by 500 million viewers across the globe.

On the weekend, just over 500 riders took part in the shortest stretch with an anticipated 700 over the coming days.
