Funding Addressing Drugs at Bay

PORT Stephens Community Drug Action Team (PSCDAT) has been successful in attaining $35,000 in grant funding to address the prevention of alcohol and other drug-related harms in the Bay and Tomaree Peninsula areas.

The Ports CDAT team is focused on working with families to reduce and prevent the harms caused by alcohol and other drugs (AOD), including crystal methamphetamine (‘ice’).

The Port Stephens team which is made up of Elizabeth Schiemer Chair, Alissya Hassett, Secretary, Jim Bright, Treasurer, Dave and Sue Sams, Evie Kalina Mauldin, Paul Pearton, and Sally Dover who all sit on the PSCDAT Committee.

PSCDAT: $35,000 funds for the prevention of alcohol and drug-related harms

The group is working on a project which will build the capacity of our local community to work together towards the prevention of alcohol and other drug related harms, through the delivery of support groups and training courses.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s NSW/ACT State Manager Dr Lisa Simone commends the commitment and passion of Port Stephens CDAT to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug-related harms in their community.

“The dedication of the volunteers in the Port Stephens Community Drug Action Team is inspirational.”

“The Community Drug Action Team program empowers local communities to make grassroots changes which promote healthy lifestyles and reduce the risk of harm from alcohol and other drugs,” she said.

Elizabeth Schiemer Chair of PSCDAT told News Of The Area, “We are keen to see the support groups and training programs launched as there is a great need in our community which we need to address.”

She believes that dealing with AOD is important as AOD can lead to domestic and family violence as well as preventable suicides.

“PSCDAT will be making a real difference at the coal face of drugs and alcohol abuse in our community,” she said.

“You can’t beat the small shopping centre service, it was our service that set us apart from the big chains,” Michelle said. “For many of

our regulars, that was the biggest reason why they kept coming back.”

“That familiarity with the staff meant that when they came in to do their grocery shopping, it wasn’t as much of a chore because they were dealing with friends, and this added a personal touch which many really people appreciated.”

Neighbouring businesses at the Austral Street Shopping Village are disappointed to see the much loved IGA store leave, but hope that locals and regulars still continue to give them their support.

OLDER people often struggle with new technology.

Some are left pondering things that others may take for granted, such as do you really need antivirus software, how safe is it to click a link on an email or to download a file to your system?

How do you download an App and use it?

There is now help at hand.

Port Stephens Library in collaboration with Tech Savvy Seniors is offering workshops at Tomaree Library at Salamander Bay and at Raymond Terrace library.

The program is being delivered in a series of free

classes which are supported by the State Library and Telstra.

The sessions will be covering topics as diverse as social media, using a tablet or a smartphone, cyber safety and using the internet.

Each class will run for approximately two hours and morning tea will also be provided to participants.

Mr Paul Whittemore, a library customer who has booked into all the courses told News Of The Area, “These courses at Tomaree Library are a wonderful opportunity for seniors in our society to keep up to date with new technologies.

“We don’t want to be left behind when there are so

many wonderful advantages to be gained with knowledge of how to use smartphones, tablets, and the Internet.

“It is also important to be aware of Cybersafety, and for

some to know how to access social media,” he said.

Spaces in each class are limited so members of the community are encouraged to contact their library to book their place at one or all of these classes.

Australia Day at the Bay

THE Nelson Bay Australia Day Committee hosted yet another fantastic Australia Day celebration at Fly Point Nelson Bay last week.

The committee are no strangers to planning the event, with this year seeing the almost unchanged group planning and hosting their twenty-first Australia Day celebration.

The day started with a well patronised parade through town led by the Hunter School of Performing Arts Band and finishing at the park at 9:30.

Doug Cross, Chairman of the Nelson Bay Australia Day Committee told News Of The Area, “We immediately had about 2000 people in the park at 9:30 and it grew all day.”

The Band providing live music on Australia Day in Nelson Bay was The Years, a popular and talented band from Newcastle.

They were received well by the crowd, and had everyone

tapping their feet, enjoying the music.

PORT Stephens Probus Club is fired up with a year’s worth of friendship and fellowship with plenty of activities on the calendar to keep all their members active.

2018 has already seen a picnic day, walking group activities and a fishing day, with a movie night, mixed bowls and a barbeque on the upcoming schedule.

The emergency services - Fire, Police, and Ambulance were all there both helping and on display for the day, as were Marine Rescue, who were present with a display before taking a call for help a long way offshore in the afternoon.

Mambo Land Return

THE Honourable Catherine Cusack MLC has found yet another reason for her government’s inaction to return to public ownership, the 5.6 ha of the Mambo wetlands that was sold ‘by mistake’ by her government.

Now her excuse for inaction is that the site would have to be assessed for suitability as a Nature Reserve; which is ‘land in a predominantly untouched, natural condition, with high conservation value’. (Sounds like the Mambo land doesn’t

If an assessment of the land is required then the government should have it done without delay.

Other reasons given for her government’s inaction have been that the government does not have a ‘legal purpose’ for acquiring the site and that ‘the site is too small’. Neither of these assertions are supported by the facts.

Dear News Of The Area, PAUL Attard has become a regular contributor and his ideas are welcome in the current debates on planning matters.

But it is not clear who the ‘we’ is that he speaks for (Bay News Of The Area Opinion, 25 January).

It would be interesting to know the basis of his assertion that there is a ‘growing consensus’ on 10 storey building heights.

to provide any evidence of community support for their current proposals which would more than double current height limits, and has largely ignored the desire of most locals to maintain the unique character of Nelson Bay, clearly expressed in last year’s consultation.

This is just another example of a whole list of issues that fall under the category of ‘Ignorant Sod of a Neighbour’. He is probably just chilling out, listening to some lunatic on talk back radio or he’s singing along to the 80s hour, and he thinks he is on a freeway instead of a sleepy semirural road that shares a boundary with your freshly washed SUV, your glistening windows, and your sugar-soaped walls.

You can try the diplomatic path and approach him. Just say, “Hey mate, I was just wondering if you had noticed the dust bowl you create when you drive 60km per hour down our shared driveway? You probably didn’t. I’d really appreciate it if you slowed down a bit.”

That may not work. You may need to get a bit passive aggressive.

“Hey, buddy, the whole concept of neighbours revolves around being neighbourly. I considerately deliver your mail when it gets placed in the wrong letter box, and I considerately dodge your dog when it sits in the middle of my driveway.

All you need to do is follow my lead and slow down. Thanks.”

If he’s as dumb as a hammer, you probably need to implement some road blocks. Maybe make a speed hump so he gets airborne. Some solar-powered fake cop lights? That should clarify your message. Or erect a sign that says, ‘Drive like your kids live here’ or maybe ‘Slow down, adults at play’. That should really freak him out.

This year, former Councillors Sally Dover and Geoff Dingle were awarded the prestigious title of Freeman of Port Stephens for their extensive dedication to the community and over ten years’ service on Council.

Freeman of Port Stephens is an honour given to individuals who have distinguished themselves with the highest order of community service.

The Citizen of the Year award was taken out by Raymond Terraces’ own Colleen Mulholland-Ruiz, who has been a passionate advocate for the Raymond Terrace community for the past two decades.

Colleen has been an active patron of the Positive Behaviour for Learning framework, which aims to create safe teaching and learning environments for local schools.

Ten-year-old Mackenzie Bell was the deserving recipient of Young Citizen of the Year for her tireless fundraising efforts for multiple sclerosis. Mackenzie was just two years old when her mother Deanna was diagnosed with the condition, and Mackenzie raised a huge $1,860 by participating in the MS 24 hour Mega Swim at Sydney Olympic Pool.

Mackenzie told News Of The Area, “When I first heard I was nominated, I felt so happy because it was such an honour to even be considered.”

“When I heard my name called out as the winner, my

stomach dropped and I was super happy I had won.”

“Being a winner does not mean you get all the attention, it means you should be proud of the work you’ve done,” she said.

“With my mum having MS, it’s important to me that they have money to find a cure and fund programs but not just for

her, for all the people with MS - I like the way it feels when I’ve helped out a charity,” she added.

Mackenzie will be back doing the MS Mega Swim in Sydney this year, and hopes to raise even more money.

She said, “I hope other kids get involved with things that are important to them, because it really is the best.”

The remaining awards on the day were presented to

a selection of Port Stephens residents from all walks of life.

Robyn Killen was the proud recipient of the inaugural Cultural Endeavour award for her dedication to the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre.

Rugby league stalwart Colin Machon was recognised as Sportsperson of the Year for his pivotal role in the expansion of the competition over the past 25 years.

Fish Run Riot

PEOPLE love fishing reports.

That’s why we regularly cruise by the fish cleaning table at Lemon Tree Passage

in Henderson Park with the hope of getting a story.

It’s not easy winkling the

good oil out of fisher folk as some of them jealously guard their ‘secret spots’. Some even

refuse to tell us the bait they use. Others give out false leads to keep wannabes away

Not so local legend Adam Parbera who has been scoring big time with both fish and crabs. While collecting yellowtail bait (yakkas) in the white water around Tomaree Headland the kingfish came on and he and his two mates had their 15 fish quota in record time. They weighed in at up to 8kg each.

The intrepid trio returned at night to the same spot to clean up big time on the snapper. These were running riot and Adam’s largest topped the scales at 9kg.

That’s not all. He reefed in a thumping 32kg jew from a hole near North Arm Cove.

Why waste the fish frames? Most anglers feed them to the pelicans but Adam recycled some through his crab pots and nailed some monster muddies at Karuah.
