Swimathon hits multiple sclerosis

MACKENZIE Bell of Anna Bay was just two when her mum, Deanna Bell, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Now ten, she has just completed her second swim in the MS Swimathon at Sydney Olympic pool.

This year her target was to raise $1,000: almost doubling her target, she raised a whopping $1,860.

Mackenzie, told News Of The Area, “It makes me feel good, because I am helping people with MS and the money for research is important.”

Totalling 2.5km over the weekend, Mackenzie said, “At first I was swimming too fast and ran out of puff, when I improved my swimming, it was a lot easier.”

As well as raising money for MS, Mackenzie supports the RSPCA Million Paws Walk, to fight against animal cruelty.

injection of funding “falls way short” of the original Gonski funding promise.

“The Federal Government was supposed to deliver $3.8 billion over the next two years, and according to Malcolm Turnbull, we will get less than half,” Mrs Shultz said.

Under the Gonski needsbased funding agreement introduced by Labor, all schools would reach the minimum resource standard by 2019.

“The Turnbull funding plan means that schools will now take 10 years to reach this standard,” Mrs Shultz said.

“This will disadvantage students and deny them the opportunity of reaching their potential.”

According to the Federal Government’s School Funding Estimator, Shoal Bay Public School will receive $13,471,500, Soldiers Point Public School will get $11,155,000, Anna Bay Public School $9,986,600, Tomaree Public School will receive $12,967,000 and Tomaree High School 50,008,100in funding over the next ten years.

NSW Education Department Secretary Mark Scott, wrote to every Public School Principal in the state last week, advising them not to rely on the funding figures released by the Turnbull Government.

Amber Lawrence, Trumps Music Festival

AUSTRALIAN Country singer Amber Lawrence performed recently in New York in front of Malcolm Turnbull and US President Donald Trump.

Lawrence performed her song, ”100 Year Handshake” at a commemorative dinner marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea. Ms Lawrence has also performed for Australian troops in East Timor and Afghanistan and wrote “100 Year Handshake” as a tribute to American and Australian relations.

Amber was joined on stage by fellow Australian Country singers, Beccy Cole and Libby O’Donovan.

The commemorative dinner was at the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum in New York and it honoured allied forces from the Coral Sea campaign with four of our Aussie veterans attending.

“It was truly an unforgettable experience,” Ms

Lawrence said.

“Thank you to our diggers who have sacrificed so much for us,” she added.

For Port Stephens Country Music Fans, you may remember Amber Lawrence performing at our first ever Country Music Festival in 2006.

It was during this time that the now famous Pasha Bulker ran aground at Nobbys Beach during heavy storms.

This year Amber Lawrence returns to the Bay, for the BlueWater Country Music Festival.

On 9 June at 8pm, Ms Lawrence will perform her popular hits at the Whitesands room at The Ramada Resort, Shoal Bay. Also performing will be Aleyce Simmonds, who has recently finished recording her third album as well as winning the prestigious 2017 APRA Country Work of the Year award for her song, “Greatest Companion”.

Staggering Pool Maintenance

q Bryan England will miss the swimming and friendship during the closure.

DURING winter, the three Port Stephens Council owned aquatic centres close for maintenance on a rotational basis.

This staggering is organised so that dedicated swimmers and those who need year-round daily training always have somewhere to swim.

Tilligerry Aquatic Centre will be first in the cycle and will close on 3 June until 31 July.

Tomaree will be out of action between 17 July and 13 August and Lakeside will have a short break from 3 July to 9 July.

Many patrons buy season tickets as the savings give them access for less than $1 per day.

During the shutdown, they are not disadvantaged as they have the option of using their pass at another pool or having it extended

for the time their home pool is closed.

Long time patron Bryan English is one regular swimmer at the Tilligerry pool who will miss his regular outings during the two month closure.

The spry 94 year old has been a patron for some 18 years.

He has cut down his daily visits to just three per week.

He does, however, still clock up as many as 30 laps of the 25 metre pool.

“I live by myself and really enjoy the company of likeminded people at the pool,” he said.

“We have a yarn, a laugh or two and a few cups of coffee.”

“They even put on a Birthday party for me when I turned 90 and have promised me another one when I get to 100.”

A Plea to Take 3

A recent CSIRO study estimates more than 150 million pieces of rubbish litter Australia’s sand and shores.

The most common item was plastic following a rapid growth in global plastic production.

This has a disastrous effect on some 600 marine species who then consume what researchers term as “plastic food”.

Port Stephens residents are very proud of the natural beauty of our beautiful Blue Water Wonderland and naturally residents get upset when they see their waterways polluted.

A great initiative for Port Stephens residents to embrace could be the Take 3 program.

Whenever you’re at a beach, waterway or anywhere in the great outdoors, simply take three pieces of rubbish away with you and know that you’ve made a huge difference to the environment around you.

Join together with friends to “Take 3”, making it a mindful moment of your daily or weekly routine and you’ll create a new habit that’s good for both you, your environment and the planet.

To Ron’s surprise, over a hundred people came to the initial meeting.

The Club was born.

During an address at the anniversary last week, Ron reminded everyone of the original golden rule: “No person will say or do anything which will cause another person to be uncomfortable.”

The club still operates under this motto.

Boot Scooting Betty Turns 90

THAT famous line by dance instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) in Dirty Dancing sprung to mind when News Of The Area caught up with the Nelson Bay Bootscooters this week: “Nobody puts Betty Baker in the corner”.

The sprightly boot scooter had a double celebration with the Nelson Bay Bootscooters gathering to celebrate her 90th birthday, as well as honouring Betty with life membership to the group she has danced with for 23 years.

Betty Baker attributes her longevity and good health to dancing.

With three members of the group in their nineties, the health benefits are certainly hard to dispute.

“I like all the girls and the dancing; I’ve met friends and it is great to catch up with them each week,” Betty Baker said.

Betty dances with the Nelson Bay Bootscooters twice a week at Wests Diggers Nelson Bay. Her daughter, Denise Baker, is also involved with the group.

President of the Nelson Bay Bootscooters, Mel Smith, said the great thing about boot scooting is that you can come on your own, unlike other forms of dance that require a partner.

“It is a wonderful, social time,” Mrs Smith said.

The lithe ladies learn new dances and refine their skills each week.

“People often mistakenly think it is only country and western dancing,” member Colleen Nash said.

But the dances also involve contemporary music and more variety than traditional country and western line dancing.

The Nelson Bay Bootscooters have showcased their skills at numerous events and they will be performing again on the June Long Weekend at the Bluewater Country Music Festival.

In keeping with tradition, the longest line dance will feature on the annual event’s final day.

My missus is insulted that I am friends with the stunning girl I took to my Year 6 formal, my first true crush (Year 8) and a university student who I had a brief, but fulfilling relationship with.

On my ‘friends’ list, I have members of our local Council (so I can see what they are really up to), emergency services personnel (you never know when you may need them) and some random lads and lassies from Ireland (I’m a sucker for their warped humour).

But former loves?

You seem rather taken with the ones on your list.

The words “stunning”, “crush” and “fulfilling” give it away.

I can understand, if your wife is folding your thankless offspring’s sports clothes, that she may not want to hear that Simone from Year 8 is about to run an Ultramarathon.

I can sense, if your ‘missus’ as you so affectionately call her, is serving up some cauliflower soup while you watch The Voice, that she may not be too keen to see you gazing nostalgically (or lasciviously) at Ms Newcastle University 2006 (who is now an inspirational speaker/ beauty product flogger).

You’d be better off unplugging yourself from the vacuous world that social media offers and giving your wife a back massage, or a nice cup of tea, or running her a bath.

After all, the posts and photos of former steadies are about as authentic as The Truman Show.

Keep it real, Mr BH, or you may find that the filtered frivolities of your fantasies are all you have left.

Friendship and Probus

PORT Stephens Friendship Group combined with the Port Stephens Probus Club which saw 25 members spend a five day coach trip to Armidale and the New England District.

Whilst on route, the group visited the Hunter Belle Cheese factory at Muswellbrook and the Golden Guitar Centre at Tamworth.

The Armidale trip included a guided tour of the city and New England University as well as a tour of historic Saumarez

Homestead.

The second day of the tour took in a trip to Dorrigo, Ebor Falls and the Dutton Trout Hatchery.

“Whilst at Ebor Falls, we met up with the Channel Nine’s Today show weather crew, who were filming for the next morning’s weather segments,” Mr Richard Harris, Port Stephens Friendship Group President told Bay News Of The Area.

“The crew was broadcasting from Uralla and were lucky enough to obtain a group photo with the

presenter, Natalie Cooper,” Mr Harris said.

The next day saw the journey continue to Dangar Falls, the beautiful Gostwyck Chapel and the Thunderbolt Museum at Uralla.

The trip home via Thunderbolts Way included a visit to the Sun Hill Goat Farm near Uralla, with lunch at Hillview Herb Farm at Gloucester.

Port Stephens Friendship group has been running for over 19 years; its purpose is to help members of the community, whether newly

Research has recently been concluded, thanks to a study completed in December by the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health and funded by the Primary Health Network and Port Stephens Council.

The report has found that there are at least 8,000 youths with mental illness on the Tomaree Peninsula alone.

“We have socialised the research and recommendations with key

stakeholders including school children,” John DeRidder, President of COPSY told News Of The Area.

“Now we are taking some specific ideas to the next level of detail and then testing them with those at the coal face of youth mental health,” Mr Deridder said.

“COPSY will not actually provide services so we shall not be treading on others turf, rather, we shall be providing support through public advocacy, fundraising and leveraging the resources

arrived or established in the area, meet other people for varied, social activities.

They meet at 5pm on the last Tuesday of each month at the Nelson Bay Diggers Club.

The meeting goes for approx one hour and many members then go to the Bistro for a social meal.

The group enjoy monthly barbecues, Coach trips, Cruises and special “budget days” for those on concession.

They also have a Caravan Group and support the local Walking For Pleasure Group.

Targeting Youth Mental Health

Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) is on target to addressing mental illness amongst our youth in Port Stephens.

COPSY’s focus is youth aged between 12 and 25 in

THE head of the Turnbull Government’s PFAS Taskforce has said he will meet with Williamtown residents on Wednesday 17 May. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson met with Senator James McGrath and he indicated the meeting would take place.

“I am heartened and encouraged by this, and I look forward to introducing the Senator to people in my community who are understandably angry and anxious about the contamination of their properties and their bodies

with these chemicals that have leached from the RAAF base,” Ms Swanson said.

“The Budget included $26.5 million in health and research measures, which was good, but did not address the issues of economic loss; aside from saying it was a ‘liability’ for the government.”

Meryl Swanson said she was hoping Senator McGrath’s visit would expedite a solution for people who want to get out.

“To see Williamtown and PFAS in the budget is a minor victory, but much more should have been done,” Ms

Swanson said.

In this budget we have $12.5 million to be spent over four years on a national research program into the health effects of PFAS, and another $14million across four years for health-related initiatives to support the communities in Williamtown and Oakey.

“Tucked away in ‘liabilities’ the budget mentions that there are ‘litigation cases’ and claims for compensation for loss, injury or damage arising from the Defence use of PFAS chemicals,” Ms Swanson said.

“So there is no actual money allocated for compensation for economic loss for people in Williamtown and Oakey in this Budget and the government has no idea how much money will be required.”

The NSW Valuer General has indicated that properties have been devalued by at least 15 percent.

“The time for talk is over. I am hoping Senator McGrath’s visit will expedite some action,” Ms Swanson said.

FEDERAL Treasurer, Scott Morrison, delivered the Budget last week, declaring it “a credible and affordable plan” based on “fairness, security and opportunity”.

But for Tea Gardens student Georgia Mason, who is currently studying at the University of Newcastle, the 7.5 percent hike in tuition

fees doesn’t feel like a fairer system.

“There is already enough pressure on students to meet the cost of studying,” Georgia told News Of The Area.

“I’m working in addition to studying full time, but it all goes towards bills, living and Uni expenses, transport and text books.”

Both are veterans of running their own businesses and believe that if you “build it and they will come”.

“While the diverse range of tasks can be a fun part of

running a small business, often a requirement is that you learn new skills on the fly,” Cheryl Royle told News Of The Area.

“We knew it was important to provide support and education for micro business owners,” Ms Royle said.

“We are currently undertaking plans to bring Lone Rangers to the Tomaree Peninsula in the very near future, so please watch this space,” Ms Royle said.

“Lone Rangers began in August 2016 and we have had a great response with many past networking meetings being full of fun, engagement, learning and making connections,” Janelle Gerrard added.

In other changes, pensioner concession cards will be restored to those who lost it after the pension assets test change was introduced earlier this year.

Mr Morrison said the Budget “makes the right choices for Australians who are working hard to secure the better days ahead for themselves and their families”.

Rescue Pet of the week OUR Rescue pet of the week is another adorable fur baby from the KITTY Rescue Project.

This week’s pet looking for her furever home is Pippa, a tortoiseshell cross tabby.

She is about eight to nine weeks old.

Pippa is so playful and very entertaining.

She is a little snuggle bug who loves people!

The KITTY Rescue Project rescues whole litters, cares for them within their volunteer foster homes, and ensures that all the necessary veterinary work is completed before adopting them to loving families.

Male kittens are $200 and Female kittens are $250.

The adoption fee includes

desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments.

The KITTY Rescue Project is this week also putting out a plea for support from our community to help them to continue the wonderful work that they do.

Amanda Warren, the project founder, told News Of The Area, “We need your help Medowie!”

“We have been completely inundated with cats and kittens at the KITTY rescue project, and we need help to help us to continue to provide the care they need in the homes of our volunteers until loving furever homes can be found.”

If anyone would like to donate supplies to help the KITTY Rescue Project, they are desperately in need of

kitty beds, litter trays, good quality wet and dry kitten food, litter and toys.

Amanda said “Basically we could use anything kitty-related, and would be so appreciative of any assistance.”

The KITTY Rescue Project had a lovely time introducing some of their rescue kittens looking for homes at a stall at Medowie markets last weekend, and hope to have established the desire to volunteer or donate in the hearts of many locals they chatted with.

PORT Stephens Council has unanimously backed a plan to build and operate a $3 million koala hospital and tourism facility at Treescape Holiday Park, One Mile Beach.

This one-of-a-kind facility is a joint initiative between Council and Port Stephens Koalas in response to challenges facing the region’s

koala population.

Glenn Bunny, Council’s Property Services Section Manager, says Council is taking a proactive approach to declining koala populations.

“Port Stephens has one of the last remaining koala populations on the east coast of Australia, so this facility is a way for us to ensure

their survival long into the future,” Mr Bunny said.

“This is just one element of a wider Port Stephens Koala Strategy, which is currently being developed by Council.

“The hospital, which will be run by Port Stephens Koalas, will take in koalas from as far north as Port Macquarie, and as far south as Sydney,” he said.

Mr. Bunny says the tourism component of the facility will be run by Council.

“Not only will this facility help treat sick and injured koalas, it will also boost the region’s economy by creating a unique tourism destination for locals and visitors alike.

“There will also be an opportunity for an education and training component of the facility, where local veterinary students can come to learn about our local koalas,” he said.

Port Stephens Council predicts the facility will generate $1 million in revenue per year, including $675,000 from tourism and an uptake in accommodation of $345,000.

Council has applied for grant funding to cover part of the initial cost of the facility.

Unanimous Support for Koala Facility

q Port Stephens has one of the last remaining koala populations on the east coast of Australia.

Drugs and Weapons Seized A MAN will face court on drug charges following a search warrant in the state’s Hunter Region.

Just before 10am Thursday 11 May, officers attached to Port Stephens Local Area Command executed a search warrant at a home on Holms Place, Anna Bay.

During the search, police allegedly located and seized drugs believed to be methamphetamine, cannabis and ecstasy, along with cash, prohibited weapons and drug paraphernalia.

All items will undergo forensic examination.

A 46-year-old man was arrested and taken to

Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug, three counts of possess prohibited drug, deal in the proceeds of crime, goods in custody, two counts of possession of prohibited weapon and breach of bail.

Police Assaulted, Man Arrested A MAN will face court next month after a 54-yearold police sergeant was allegedly assaulted in the state’s Hunter Region.

Just before 10.30pm Friday 12 May 2017, officers attached to Port Stephens Local Area Command were patrolling Shoal Bay Road, Shoal Bay. Police observed a man talking to a woman, before the sergeant approached to speak to him about his behaviour.

The man became aggressive, and without provocation punched the sergeant in the head.

Both fell to the ground in a violent struggle.

Another police officer came to assist the sergeant and during this time it’s believed another unknown male became involved and allegedly kicked the sergeant in the head while he was on the ground and then fled the area.

With the assistance of nearby security officers, a 19-year-old man was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station.

He was charged with assaulting a police officer occasioning actual bodily

harm and resisting arrest.

The sergeant was treated by NSW Ambulance officers, before being taken to Mater Hospital with an arm injury and concussion and is now on sick leave.

The other officer did not require treatment.

The 19-year-old man was granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 19 June 2017.

Inquiries are continuing.

You must also not wait in front of the whale/s, or approach from behind.

If you’re on the water, on a powered or non-powered water vessel such as a boat, surfboard, surf ski or kayak, then you need to maintain a distance of at least 100m from the whale/s, and 300m if a calf is present.

If using a ‘prohibited vessel’ (that is, a vessel that can make fast and erratic movements) then the distance increases to at least 300m from the whale/s.

If you’re in a plane or helicopter, or watching the seas from a drone and you spot a whale, then you must be at a height not lower than

300 metres.

Whale watching runs for six months of the year with the Northern Migration from mid-May to August and the Southern Migration from August to mid-November when the mothers and newborn calves make their way back down to the feeding grounds of the Antarctica.

Police, firefighters and paramedics battled it out on the waves, but it was all for a good cause with this year’s competition raising over $5,500.

“The police member numbers have increased steadily over the last few years, and we are seeing record numbers of them attending this year,” Mr Grimwood said.

“We also have a few interstate firies attending and that helps with the friendly rivalry. Although it is a fun competition, there is always the competitive spirit that shows itself.”

Although Mr Grimwood played down any focus on the work of emergency services, the event offers time out from occupations that are

physically demanding and emotionally taxing.

“To be honest, we don’t concentrate on us as emergency workers while running and attending the event, other than to pay tribute to fellow emergency service workers who have passed on, or who are experiencing tough times,” he said.

The family-friendly event instead focused on surfing and camaraderie, with “former International Professional surfers and former State and Australian Title holders” mixing it up with “guys and girls that just love surfing”.

To date the funds have been distributed to charities including the Bowel Cancer Research Foundation, the Birubi Point Surf Life Saving Club and Cancer Council Australia.

Over $100,000 has been raised since the event commenced.

Andrew Grimwood praised local businesses who helped out with raffle prizes and at-cost goods to assist with fundraising efforts.

The Department of Planning and Environment has not issued Council with an authorisation to exercise delegation for the planning proposal.

Development Application - DA 521/2017 Applicant: Enyoc Pty Ltd Details: Mixed use development including civic/community, commercial, residential and tourist uses. Facilities include a new library, visitor information centre and community space being developed and delivered on behalf of Council. Given that Council has a commercial interest in the development, Council has engaged an independent consultant to review the development application and prepare a report for the Joint Regional Planning Panel’s consideration. The Hunter and Central Coast Joint Regional Planning Panel will be the consent authority responsible for determining the development application.

The application is also classed as Integrated Development and requires an approval from The NSW Office of Water under the Water Management Act 2000, in respect to a controlled activity.

HOSES and handcuffs were replaced with longboards and larrikinism as emergency services personnel converged on One Mile beach for the annual Guns and Hoses charity event.

Bateau Bay Fire and Rescue NSW Station Officer Andrew Grimwood has been the event’s organiser since 2013, ably assisted by Kincumber Station Officer Iain McGuire and retired Berkeley Vale Station Officer Peter Woods.

Mr Grimwood was quick to attribute the event’s success to teamwork and commitment.

“It is really a team event . . . I get a lot of help from a lot of mates to make the event a success,” he said.

The surfing competition was originally conceived by “firies” Phil Baggs and Scott Downing in 1997, as a way for some forced rest and relaxation as well as an opportunity to raise money CONTINUED Page 12
