Slow Down for Shared Zones

NELSON Bay township has been a shared pedestrian zone for many years.

However members of the Tomaree Business Chamber committee claim that there has been an increase in the number of drivers who are failing to stick to the pedestrian safety speed limits.

Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “There could be better markings of the zones and the signs could be more prominent to attract drivers attention.”

“Ultimately it would be good to see a review of the street signs throughout the CBD of Nelson Bay,” she said.

She is concerned that people aren’t educated about the shared zone rules, leading to drivers and pedestrians not knowing who has right of

Families were clearly enjoying the entertainment and markets on d’Albora Marinas and the foreshore at and Fly Point at Nelson Bay. Beaches and parks were also busy with people out enjoying the blue water paradise which is Nelson Bay. There were plenty of visitors and locals sampling the delights of the cafes and restaurants and shopping in the Bay’s boutiques in the CBD. While traffic banked up on Victoria Avenue, pedestrians spilled across the crossing through Apex Park and onto the marina.

way and failure to adhere to shared zone speed limits could lead to pedestrian injuries.

Shared zones are specifically designed to give pedestrians priority, particularly where there are comparatively high pedestrian volumes.

According to the NSW Roads Transport and Maritime Services, shared zones are created to improve pedestrian safety and amenity.

The shared zone speeds in Nelson Bay are 10 km per hour through the CBD on Stockton and Magnus Streets and 40km per hour on Victoria Parade.

For those who drive locally this could be a wakeup call on the 10km per hour speed limit in Stockton and Magnus Streets.

Anna Louriceella of Sienna’s in Magnus Street Nelson Bay said, “It’s been really busy.”

Rory Milne of Terry White Chemmart Pharmacy told News Of The Area, “It was the busiest week post Christmas ever in the past 30 years!”

He believes it has been busy right across the Peninsula.

While business trading was good in the township there are still empty retail spaces which could be activated.

The Chamber is hoping that the Civic Pride Committee will be able to work with Council to make the town a more vibrant space which should see a long term increase in trade.

Yacaaba work to resume

PRELIMINARY works on the $1.5 million extension of Yacaaba Street will resume, after a brief break to reduce disruption to visitors and businesses during the busy summer holiday period.

Phil Miles, Council’s Capital Works Section Manager, says construction was paused to ensure the crucial tourism economy in Nelson Bay was not impacted by works.

“We’re excited to get back to work on Yacaaba Street – and we know a lot of people are keen to see this project finished,” Mr Miles said.

“The decision to delay commencement of the construction phase has provided local businesses with the opportunity to trade through the Christmas and New Year period without disruption or negative impact from the worksite.

“Works will re-commence with preliminary activities including the relocation of electrical services, which are

accessibility between the CBD and the foreshore, as well as a fresh new space for people to enjoy, we expect the Yacaaba Street extension will drive visitation to the precinct and boost the local economy,” Mr Miles said.

“The next stage will involve major civil works and is set to start in February. This will include the construction of the road extension and landscaping,” he said.

Public Art to Define Communities

PORT Stephens Cultural Plan 2015 – 2018 provides Council and the community with a strategy that enables resources to be prioritised and integrated into Council’s future strategic plans to build a healthy art and cultural community.

The Cultural Plan aligns with cultural planning directions identified at Federal and NSW levels including strategies that encourages residents to have an increased participation in arts and culture, strengthening the cultural sectors capacity and celebrating its cultural diversity.

The aim of the plan is to connect through the Port Stephens community to build

a vibrant and sustainable cultural life, which values the potential of the area’s culture, distinct local characteristics and collective possibilities.

One key part of the plan is to recognise the cultural zones Port Stephens could be divided into.

The proposed zones are in the western part of the region the Rural Zone, a History Zone around Raymond Terrace, Life on the River, Estuary Living, Coastal Village centred around Nelson Bay, Surfing Mecca at One Mile and Birubi Beach, Grow Your Own centred around Medowie, Quiet Coastal Gateway of Fern Bay and its surrounds and the Aspirational Industry around Tomago with the proposed zones covering the entire

He believes that public art is one very effective way to achieve that.

“We know that each part of our local government area has its own identity and each community has a different view about what makes their space unique.” he said.

Community Groups like the Rotary Club of Salamander Bay will be Barbecuing up breakfasts at Fly Point and there will be some fantastic

entertainment.

The Australia Day program is put together entirely by the community and organised by some of Port Stephens Council’S volunteers.

The committee has announced that the band featuring at the Australia Day celebrations in Nelson Bay this year is “The Years” from Newcastle.

The committee is serving up some great activities from 9am when the parade commences down Victoria Parade.

Spectators can enjoy performances by Hunter School of Performing Arts Marching Band and Riddled Liver Band, displays of vintage and classic cars, JD’s World of Magic workshops, Croc Stars reptile display, pony rides, giant slide and jumping castle.

There will also be free flags, ice blocks and chips for the kids.

THE extreme fire conditions and intense weather has been hard on people, but it has been disastrous for our defenceless wildlife.

WINC (Wildlife in Need of Care) has never had so many infant wildlife coming into care, and they’re running short on some things, and are hoping the community might be able to supply help out.

Lorraine Yudaeff, President of WINC told News Of The Area, “This season has been catastrophic for wildlife that cant defend themselves, and WINC is doing everything we can to help them.”

“We have put the call out to the community and hope that people can go through their cupboards and see what they’re able to help out with.”

“Anything is appreciated, so that we can continue to do the job that we do,” she said.

WINC are in desperate need of old sheets, pillowcases, towels or tea towels you haven’t needed or used for ages and need to cull down on.

Lorraine said, “We can immediately put them to very good use in providing snuggling places for baby animals.”

Dear Jasminda, My boyfriend bought me a puppy for my birthday. I was about to break up with him, but the puppy is really cute and I don’t have the heart to do it now.

Well, Miss KL, this is a conundrum on a number of levels.

To start with, and I am being deadly serious here, you should never buy anyone a pet for a present. Pets are something that require careful consideration, adequate shelter and fencing, and a healthy bank account. It is not just the initial outlay, it is the ongoing maintenance: tick treatments, worming, bathing and grooming, replacing the twelve chooks down the road that your dog decided to maul, relining the wall on your rental property after your dog (which is prohibited under your rental agreement) chewed a dog-shaped hole through it, and so on. Your boyfriend did a well-intentioned, but silly thing.

Next is the issue of being stuck with this guy because of a dog. Have you read Careful, He Might Hear You or watched Kramer vs Kramer? Your life could become just like that. I sincerely hope you have both written a prenuptial agreement (or in this case a prepuptial agreement). There are important things to consider when you inevitably part ways. Who will continue the puppy obedience sessions? Who will pay for the dog’s needs in winter (puppy coat, blanket, raincoat and so on)? Will you split custody 50/50, or will one of you have to pay dog support? What if you are deemed to be unfit parents? What if, heaven forbid, the dog knocks up another dog and you are left with a litter of pit-bull-crosspoodle pups and you start to look like one of those families from The Jerry Springer Show?

Just like those first weeks with a new boyfriend, early days with a pup are full of slobbery kisses, cute photos, gourmet meals and walks along the beach. The long haul, however, is quite a different story. I hope you’re up for it, Miss KL. Pups, like boyfriends, can eventually grow into different beasts altogether.

WE’D like to introduce Sean Costigan.

Sean is a craft beer brewer with a passion which he fuels at Murrays Brewery at Bobs Farm.

As Co-Head Brewer Sean is responsible for the drinking pleasure of a range of craft beers, cider and he is now working with his team to introduce locally made vodka and gin.

Sean Costigan told News Of The Area, “I have been brewing beer since I was 18 and I have the perfect job here where I get to create new and different recipes.”

He believes that the spirit range will be something which will evolve.

“It’s exciting to mix different flavours, while distilling spirits is something new to us in the brew house, we have a wealth of experience in balancing flavours.”

Sean is passionate about the sourcing of local produce and even the water used in the brews that he makes.

SHOOTING hoops is a great way for kids to get into basketball.

PCYC Nelson Bay is offering holiday clinics where kids can have fun and learn how to play basketball.

The clinics cater to kids aged five to eight, and nine to 12 from 1-5pm, on Wednesdays.

On Thursday afternoons the Under 18s play from 1-5pm.

The five to eight year olds use an 8 foot hoop rather than the standard 10 foot hoop making it easier for them to succeed in getting a goal.

LAKESIDE Tavern have got you covered this weekend if you’re looking for a night out on the town.

Newcastle duo ViAgro will hit the stage from 8:30pm on Saturday 20 January.

For those not fortunate enough to have heard them, ViAgro are a duo of brothers that divide a drum kit between its two members whilst singing and playing guitars at the same time.

The end result of this impressive split is a full sounding rock band show cleverly pulled off by only two people.

After a decade plus of constant performing the one and only viAgro are still up for the usual post gig question, with audience members always in awe of how they pull off their unique act.

“We still get asked that every night, along with the

various jokes about our name, and numerous theories and opinions on why we haven’t got a drummer” says cofounder Palzy Daivah.

“A lot of bands lay claim to being different, but over our ten year existence we’ve yet to come across or even hear of another band that does what, looks or sounds like we do,” continues Palzy.

With over 1500 shows performed, ViAgro have also supported The Screaming

Jets and toured with The Angels on their 2014 40th Anniversary tour.

ViAgro, happily claiming you can’t miss their act, and witnessing them ‘abusing covers like no others’.

Palzy told News Of The Area, “It’s always a mad night of rock n roll and partying at Lakeside Tavern, and we’re looking forward to making some noise and having a drink with all the locals once again!”

Neighbourhood Centre goes Zumba

IF your little ones have a lot of unburnt energy these holidays, Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre have the perfect activity for them.

They have teamed up with local Zumba instructors to offer a kids Zumba workshop on Tuesday 23 January.

The class will be held in the acacia/boronia room of the Tomaree Community Centre.

Let the kids burn off energy in this Latin inspired fitness workout designed just for kids.

Zumba is an exercise fitness program created by a Colombian dancer and cyclist/ choreographer.

Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements.

The choreography incorporates hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue and mambo.

Entry is only $5, which goes back into supporting the wonderful work the Tomaree Community/Neighbourhood centre does.

Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre Administrative Coordinator Georgina Scott

told News Of The Area, “We’re excited to provide these activities for children at the centre.”

“We love to see them being active and trying something new!”

“It’s guaranteed to be a funfilled class with lots of energy, movement and laughter,” she said.

Any primary school aged child is welcome to attend, and no previous experience with Zumba is need to shake a tail feather and give something

new a try.

Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre volunteer Helen Dykes said, “Zumba is a fantastic way to encourage healthy activities in our young people, whilst having a whole lot of fun.”

“We encourage as many parents and carers as possible to sign their children up to give it a try.”

Caregivers are asked to drop into the centre to register and pay for your child by Monday 22 January.

Bridge for Beginners

HAVE you ever wanted to start playing bridge?

Kevin Farrell from The Tomaree Bridge Club will be enabling your dream to be fulfilled, with a 12 week Bridge for Beginners course to help you learn the game of Bridge.

Bridge is played worldwide and enjoyed by people from all walks of life.

It is a game that provides mental stimulation and a wonderful social outlet.

Kevin Farrell told News Of The Area, “The Tomaree Bridge Club was formed by the amalgamation of the Nelson Bay and Port Stephens Bridge Clubs at the commencement of 2016.

“We have 170 members who have fun enjoying Bridge and socialising during the sessions on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, Friday mornings and some Friday evenings,” he said.

The 12 weeks of Bridge classes start on 29 January from 9.30am-11.30am.

The lessons are being offered by Tomaree Bridge Club for $50.

GOING barefoot at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on 19 January from 6.30pm will support Beyondblue, with barefoot bowls on 23 February Supporting Breast Cancer and 6 April supporting the Sporting Hope Association.

There’s not much you can do to have a great night out for only $10 but that’s all it will cost you to play on these days.

Nelson Bay Bowling Club’s General Manager Dean McCarthy told News Of The Area, “We have had a lot of success running barefoot bowls as a fundraiser for charities with organisations raising anywhere from $500 to $1000 at the event.”

The Leukemia Foundation Barefoot Bowls Event held at the club, raised close to $6000.

He believes that going barefoot bowling for charity is a fun way of making a difference.
