RHYS Fabris of Boat Harbour has an incredible talent he is keen to share.

His artistic flair has allowed him to create stunning street art both here and other local areas.

Rhys said, “I opted not to take formal training as I felt it would take me away from my vision as an artist.”

Whilst also working fulltime, Rhys finds time to engage himself and the community creating incredible artwork.

Rhys put a call out recently for potential interest in his craft, seeking blank walls of all sizes.

He said, “I am so excited about the response, I have been contacted by fellow artists wanting to collaborate, which creates an all-round win win situation and some local businesses with walls they would like me to decorate.”

First blank wall to benefit from Rhys’s amazing talent will be Salamander Bay bike shop, then Nelson Bay kindy.

TOMAREE High School students will make a significant contribution at this year’s Vietnam Veterans Day service in Nelson Bay. Students will participate in the 11am service on Friday, 18 August, to take place at the Nelson Bay Memorial in Apex Park by providing flag bearers, the official address and the Oath.

Nelson Bay RSL Sub Branch secretary Russell Durrant, himself a Vietnam veteran, said the service would commemorate the

hundreds of Australians who died in the decadelong war.

“We are privileged to have young school students not only attend the service but make a contribution on the day,” Mr Durrant said.

“It is important that the lessons of the Vietnam War be passed on to the younger generations.

Padre Rev Frank Duffy will officiate.

“The service traditionally does not go beyond 15 or 20 minutes, and afterwards all are invited back to the Diggers Club for refreshments.”

Nell back for another Council stint

UNFINISHED business is what’s driving councillor John Nell to take another shot at Port Stephens Council at the 9 September elections.

Planning regulations, car parking and building height limits in Nelson Bay are top of Cr Nell’s agenda, plus a fear of walking away from something he has, for the most part, enjoyed for nearly 30 years of his life.

“Two years ago I said that I wouldn’t be standing again but circumstances have changed, major issues

such as the revitalisation of Nelson Bay need to be finalised,” the 69-yearold retired biologist said.

“Besides, the thought of leaving Council after three decades got quite scary, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself.”

First elected to Port Stephens in 1983, Cr Nell said that most of his years on the council had been enjoyable.

“The last term (five years) has been by far the worse experience but I put that down mainly due to the personalities of two colleagues,” the East Ward Councillor said.

“I am a great believer that personal issues should be put aside when debating at meetings, everyone is entitled to their opinions and these should be respected.

“We are elected to work together, sure we need to have frank discussions but at the end of the day we should be putting the community first, not personalities.”

Cr Nell said it was more important now than ever to move on the Nelson Bay strategic plan and the controversy over building height limits.

“Whether that is 20 metres or 32 metres, we need decisions to ensure investment returns to the Bay and to fill up the shops again.

“Car parking is another hot topic which needs to be sorted out quickly. There are a few options to look at, including the idea of contributions by commercial property owners and using Council dollars.”

FOR almost four decades he has served his beloved community of Port Stephens, yet on the eve of retirement Mayor Bruce Mackenzie has no plans to slow down.

In fact, in an ominous sign to his successors, the man known simply as ‘Macca’ says he retains a keen interest in civic affairs and won’t be sitting back idly.

“You will still hear me … if this place is being badly led I will be making a noise. I am not going to suddenly lose interest after nearly 40 years of service,” he warned.

“I am going to miss being able to help people and if someone comes to me with a problem they are having with the Council I will do what I can.”

First elected to Port Stephens Council in 1968, the popularly elected mayor says it was with a heavy heart that he decided not to recontest

sporting facilities and most importantly, providing aged care.

“And with the support of some great staff members I am proud to be leaving this council in great shape.”

Mr Mackenzie said that his determination to succeed in life and business stems from a poor upbringing, admitting that for a time his was the only family in Salt Ash without power.

He left school at 14, took on the Air Force and won and once sat on the floor of a Sydney office for two hours waiting for Defence to fulfil a promised payment.

These experiences taught him resilience and a hard work ethic. At 79, he still rises at 5am every morning to feed his stable of horses.

He may be retiring from his council duties, but Mr Mackenzie says his work life continues with his racehorses, cattle, commercial and agricultural property and extended family.

“I won’t be going anywhere.”

Mr Mackenzie took an 8-year hiatus from 2000, but returned with a vengeance to top the poll in 2008 and followed up in 2012 by becoming the Port’s first popular elected mayor.

Once a card carrying member of the Liberal Party, he has always fiercely defended his independence and believes there is no room in local government for party politics.

Love him or hate him, the self confessed dictatorial leader courted controversy on many fronts and on reflection he makes no apologies.

“I have never worried about my critics, they are the fringe minority. Groups such as Boomerang Park Action and TRRA have never bothered me.

“I may be a dictator but have a look at the results.

“My legacy is being able to assist in making this Council financially secure through clever investments, building roads, fixing drains, providing parks, the best

KERRY Sprigg is the newly appointed President of Port Stephens Busy Bees.

Established in 1988 with six ladies who wanted to contribute to various schools and groups who support children with special needs.

Today, the money raised is distributed to 12 schools as well as Ronald McDonald House, Dogs for the Blind and TAD (makers of special desks and chairs for children).

Kerry, who is considered one of the babies of the group, was invited to recite bush poetry at one of the Busy Bees meetings.

“I was so impressed with

the history, friendship and generosity of the group I became a member.” she said.

“I look forward to each meeting where I can replenish my stock of jams, pickles, lemon curd and be inspired by these wonderful ladies.” Kerry told News Of The Area.

With one hundred paying members, there is never any less than 35 ladies at a meeting where nothing less than $350 is raised.

The group of ladies meet on the second Tuesday of the month at the Anglican Church Hall, Nelson Bay. Everything is donated and purchased by the “Bees”, raffles play a big part in their

money raising efforts, even the prizes are donated by members.

The meeting is open to the public, who are welcome to purchase some of the yummies craft on sale and enjoy the entertainment.

A $3 entry fee, which includes entry raffle ticket, and an invite to stay for lunch (if staying for lunch), please BYO plate.

Kerry would like to thank the previous President, Anne Simmonds, 83 years old, who did a marvellous job during her four and a half years at the helm.

THE Farmers Of The Sea event at d’Albora Marinas last weekend showcased the Port Stephens Oyster Industry as a part of the Love Seafood festival.

Minister for the Hunter Scot MacDonald, and Councillor John Nell participated with others in the celebrity Oyster Shucking competition.

There was plenty of fun and some great prizes

for the amateur shucking and the local industry professional oyster shuckers also competed against each other and the clock.

The winners of the shucking competitions were Dean Cole of Cole Bros Oysters in the professional category and John Ridgeway in the Amateur Category.

The winners were presented with their awards

There was plenty of

interest at the various information sessions including the sex life of oysters.

Port Stephens is home to four oyster growing regions, Karuah, Tea Gardens, Tilligerry and Oyster Cove, producing the world famous Sydney Rock Oyster as well as large Pacific Oysters and the Flat Oyster which is endemic to the region.

There is also an oyster hatchery operating on Tomaree headland.

A recent study social and economic impact of aquaculture on the coast

has shown how the industry has created jobs and positive economic impact as well as creating a wonderful fishing and lifestyle culture both in commercial and recreational arenas.

The event was a huge success celebrating Port Stephens’ oyster growing industry.

With plenty of locals and visitors lining up to learn how to shuck their own oysters and taking home nets of unopened oysters to enjoy.

PORT Stephens Council conducted a community drop in session at Birubi Surf Life Saving Club on 12 August to allow members of the wider community an opportunity to learn about the proposed plans for Birubi Point.

The plans detailed how the site will be developed and the cultural significance of the place for the Worimi.

Birubi Point is a sanctioned Aboriginal Place under NSW legislation and a plan of management is a requirement for the management of the site.

Steve Bernasconi of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “We were overwhelmed by the positive response.”

“At least 150 people dropped in and asked questions and talked about Aboriginal cultural values and how we can protected and respect it”.

“The Master Plan sets the overarching view of what might be done and this will be supported by the management plan that will come in stage three of the consultation,” he said.

Birubi Point is an area which many different community groups access and is of considerable significance to the Worimi people.

Hopeful for a better future

ONE Founding member of Salamander Bays’ Men’s Shed, talks about the struggles of dealing with mental health, weight gain and where to from here.

Twenty years ago, mental health was not a topic people talked about, less so for men.

Whilst folk are more open about this today, there remains so much stigma which prevents people seeking the help they need.

Mark Freeman of Nelson Bay, was diagnosed twenty years ago with depression, has undergone many counselling sessions, was medicated and yet he still didn’t feel quite right.

“I knew something was not right, but I was unable to define the feeling so I didn’t know where to get help from, so I didn’t pursue it, where could I go if I couldn’t describe how I was feeling.”

During a session with a psychologist it was discovered Mark had been suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and whilst this was somewhat of a surprise, Mark said, “It was

another piece of the jigsaw falling into place.”

“Being diagnosed with depression and then much later PTSD, this was the start of my journey going forward.”

Being upfront with members of the Men’s Shed, Mark was pleasantly surprised by offers of support and a listening ear if needed.

Mark told News Of The Area, “The Men’s Shed has given me a purpose, I wouldn’t have done so well without their support.”

The lack of nice clothing for larger men added to the depression, Mark said, “Finding a store, where I could buy, nice, comfortable and flattering clothing meant so much, it restored some of my dignity.”

Mark suggested if a male, in particular, is looking for social engagement, contact Port Stephens Peninsular woodwork group, Men’s Shed, Probus, Rotary or a Lions group.

“There is no need to be socially isolated,” Mark said.

Chemist merger a win for customers

THE public will be the big winners following the merger between the Nelson Bay Chemmart pharmacy and the giant Terry White group.

The amalgamation was announced earlier this month, creating a network of about 500 stores and an estimated turnover of $2 billion.

For Port Stephens shoppers, the merger is expected to provide more buying power and cheaper prices at the checkout, says pharmacy part owner Sue Milne.

“With more buying power we are hoping to pass on those savings to customers,” Mrs Milne said.

For those that want to get right into the swing of things the Ceilidh will be held at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on 16 September from 6.30pm where guests will enjoy seeing the chieftain being piped in, pipe band playing, highland dancing and of course the haggis will be piped in with much ceremony, including the address to the haggis by Scott Morrison.

There will be a Traditional Scottish Wedding on the Day with local Phil Greentree performing as the Bard.

Clans on the Coast does so much more than celebrate the heritage of Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Cornwall, Wales, Brittany and Glaicia.

SERENA Ireland has been surrounded by horses her entire life.

She inherited the passion from her mother, and the pair have been riding together since she was a baby.

Serena got her first Shetland pony at age three, developing her love of horses before beginning dressage competitions around the age of 10.

Serena trained her first pony ‘He’s A Rockstar’ from the lowest level of dressage, before riding in her first Grand Prix with him when she was just 17.

This is a significant achievement to reach the highest level of dressage at such a young age, especially on a horse you have trained yourself.

Just prior to finishing her High School Certificate, the opportunity to to be a working student at Hof Börnsen, a German equestrian training academy, arose through Serena’s longtime coach and friend Liz Mudd.

She made the brave decision to follow her dream, and travelled to Germany in December 2015, just six weeks after her final year 12 exam.

Serena told News Of The Area, “I’ve been based at Hof Börnsen since December 2015 and I am now pursuing my dream of becoming a professional rider and an international dressage competitor for Australia.”

“I’ve had the opportunity to compete this season with two incredible horses, Dauphin’s Dream and Franklyn 11, and it has been a very successful season so far, including winning in Vierlanden which was only my third competition with Dauphin’s Dream,” she said.

One answer is parkrun, offering a series of running and walking events that take place every Saturday morning in fifteen countries across five continents.

The events are run by volunteers, and participation is free of charge.

Ward a golfing whiz at age 88

TWO years ago former Port Stephens councillor Frank Ward collapsed while putting on the 20th green at Nelson Bay golf course, severely damaging his vertebrae.

Rendered an invalid, the then 86-year-old was resigned to never again playing the game he loved, giving away his treasured golf clubs to his son.

“The doctors’ prognosis was not good and I was constantly in pain so I thought there was no use holding on to the clubs,” said Mr Ward, a resident of Harbourside Haven in Shoal Bay. “But a few months ago I was referred to a new doctor who prescribed antiinflammatories and slowly my back began to heal.

“It wasn’t long before I was walking again without pain so I rang my son and told him to send me back my clubs.”

Following a 28-month lay-off, Mr Ward returned to the course a fortnight ago for his first 18-hole comp event shooting an astonishing one shot below his age – a feat many golfers would never achieve in a lifetime.

“I finished with an 87 and 41 points to win the stableford event,” Mr Ward, now aged 88, said.

Amazingly, this was not the first time the proud grandfather has made headlines playing the Nelson

Jack and his late wife Nola joined the Golf Club in 1979.

Jack dedicated 16 years to serving on the Board of the Club.

He was President from 1994 to 2001.

In recognition of this record he was made a Life Member when he stepped down as President in 2001.

Jack presided over the major works undertaken by the Board which resulted in the extension from 18 holes to the current 27 holes.

Both Jack and his late wife appreciated the friendship that was always extended to them from the Membership and continues to be extended to Jack.

Everyone in the Golf Club sends their very best wishes to Jack on this very special occasion.

“It was the depression years but my older siblings (a brother and sister) and I were looked after well by the nuns,” he said.

“Eventually I moved to Sydney to live with my Irish grandmother and finish school.”

Mr Ward captained the school rugby league side, moved into the real estate business and joined the Labor Party in 1956.

He was elected to Campbelltown Council and later to Port Stephens Council after moving to Shoal Bay.

In the week before his 75th birthday, Mr Ward hit a purple patch reducing his handicap to single figures for the very first time and shooting his first ever holein-one on the par-3 fifth.

“A week later I was showing a young colleague how I had aced the hole, I pulled out my seven iron and you wouldn’t believe it the ball went straight in … two holes-in-one within a week.”

debuted together for the Panthers rugby league club in 1974 in the under 23 competition,” Barden said.

“Ross played in the centres and I played five-eighth and coincidentally there’s a photo of the two of us on the front page of the PRLC Journal dated a year later, 11 April, 1975, of which I have a copy.

“History shows that he (Gigg) went on to play more than 100 first grade games for the Panthers, I on the other hand spent four years in the lower grades before giving the game away.

“We were not the closest of friends – Ross came from the Blacktown club and I had played most of my junior football in the Penrith district - but we had a mutual respect for

each other and we will forever be connected by the fact that we made our club debuts on the same day.”

Barden said he had followed Gigg’s career since leaving the Panthers in 1977 and was well aware of his work with the Men of League in the Newcastle area and as general manager of the Newcastle Trotting Club.

“It was quite tragic to hear that he died of a heart attack in May 2014, and so it was with mixed emotion that I accepted the memorial shield named in his honour.”

Barden, who moved from Sydney to Port Stephens eight years ago, said he focused on work and golf after ending his league career prematurely.

“I have always enjoyed golf and at one stage was playing off a handicap of two, today I am still a single figure player (8.6).”

Barden said he had played in all five Men of League golf days and that he would be determined next year to vigorously defend the Ross Gigg Memorial shield won in 2107.

Mixed emotions for charity golf day WINNER

IT was with mixed emotions that Nelson Bay golfer Mark

Barden accepted the Ross Gigg Memorial shield at the Men of League charity golf day held on 6 August.

Barden, from Fingal Bay, teamed up with Ray Newton, Greg Spake and Ray Moore, to win the ambrose event from

42 competing teams at the Nelson Bay course.

The 63-year-old grandfather admitted to
