THE Bay’s coastline and the environment we all enjoy living in at Port Stephens is the focus of the Sun, Surf and Sand exhibition being held at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre until 20 February.

Gallery Director, Nada O’Loughlin-Yonge told News Of The Area, “The next feature artist will be water colour Painter Stafford Bennett whose paintings will be on display until 20 February.”

Stafford Bennett is a versatile artist who paints a variety of Australian landscapes, historical buildings, water scenes, fauna and flora and still life.

Stafford told News Of The Area, “Taking up painting has changed the way I look at the world.

“DPS has spent a lot of time and effort in building a brand and industry in Port Stephens which benefits our community and economy. We expect Eileen’s expertise and experience will help us strengthen these and take us to a new level,” he added.

Ms Gilliland said she was relishing the opportunity to work in such an iconic destination.

“I am very much looking forward to taking on this new challenge and to be working with the local tourism industry to continue to grow the visitor economy. I have been interested in a move back into regional tourism and Port Stephens was always at the top of my list,” Ms Gilliland said.

“There are so many natural advantages that DPS have to work with and I’m hopeful I can build on them as well as uncover some new and exciting opportunities as well.”

The Artist who inspires Stafford most is our own Newcastle artist William T Cooper.

Following his retirement in 2000 Stafford took up watercolour painting with the Nepean Art Society under the tutelage of Peter Gonzalez and Joe Cartwright.

Stafford moved with his wife Valerie from the Blue

Mountains to Corlette in 2016.

Stafford worked for the NSW Public Works Department on major high rise construction and was a founding member and president of the Institute of Plant Engineers of Australasia.

He was asked to join the Legislature of the NSW

Parliament to oversee the construction of the new members Annexe and the restoration of the Rum Hospital, which currently serves as the NSW Parliament House.

At one time he was also responsible for the preservation and conservation of the Parliament’s historic art

collection, which was responsible for starting his interest in art.

You can visit the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre and see Stafford’s and other local artists’ works between 10am and 4pm daily at Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road in Nelson Bay.

New Home Anna Bay Markets ANNA Bay markets have moved and the new venue is getting the thumbs up.

The new site on Nelson Bay Road at the Bay Life Church not only has improved parking but great exposure.

The feel of these markets is definitely community.

There’s jams and preserves, plants and some quirky handmade goods, as well as T-shirts and clothes on offer too.

Stall holder Jan Dickson was visiting friends and family while showcasing her handmade bird feeders which are made from recycled homewares.

Local market stall holder Louis Varkoly of Gabriel’s Candles told News Of The Area, “These are great grounds for a market and there is plenty of parking.”

Gabriel’s make their own candles locally and also sell a range of salt lamps and wax melts. They are at most of the Bay markets, including Fly Point and Tomaree Sports Fields.

You may also spy Judi Walker at the Anna Bay Markets and other events around town. Judi is highly praised for the quality of the face painting which she does and the range of styles on offer.

Locals love a good market and coming up on the radar for the Bay is the Legacy Market at Fly Point on the third Sunday of the month

WE’D Like to introduce Margaret Wiblow.

A member of the community who fundraises for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, and a member of the Friendship Group of Port Stephens.

When we caught up with Margaret she was busy helping out with raising funds for the CWA. Margaret obviously has her finger in a lot of pies in the community as she also runs the meditation subgroup of the Friendship Group of Port Stephens, in relaxing mindfulness bi monthly.

IT costs a mere $18 million dollars to buy a Westpac Rescue Helicopter and local Margaret Wiblow is working hard to raise funds for the cause.

AFTER a recent meeting with Newcastle Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) General Manager Andy Fairfull, Medowie will be playing in the premier Division again in 2018, honouring a MOU with Nelson Bay Gropers as a supporting team.

The main focus of the meeting was around timing of matches in 2017 .

The meeting was fruitful, with the NHRU open to Medowie’s concerns.

By Rachael VAUGHAN MRS Galaxy Australia 2017 is preparing to hand over her crown after a wonderfully busy year of reign.

Emilie-rae Hardes, wife and mother of two from Tanilba Bay, has been the Mrs Galaxy Australia for 2017 and participated in a wide variety of community and fundraising events.

From countless charity events and fundraising endeavours through to Ambassador roles, VIP events and Balls, Emilie-rae’s year has been run at full speed from start to finish.

She told News Of The Area, “The highlight of this whole experience was being able to meet so many different people from all walks of life.”

“The appearance that touched me the most was spending Mother’s Day at a local Nursing Home.”

“Honorable mention must also go to my day getting back on a surfboard to compete in the ‘Tubes for Boobs’ competition,” she said.

Emilie-rae is sad to see the end of her reign, but also excited for the next step in her life.

She has good reason to be excited, telling News Of The Area that she is 25 weeks pregnant with her third child, a miracle baby to be born into her family.

Emilie-rae said, “My husband has an autoimmune disease, and when I was pregnant with our second child, before the Galaxy pageant, we were told it would be close to impossible to have another baby.”

“But, here we are, are we so over the moon.”

Emilie-rae will be travelling to the Gold Coast mid March to meet all the new contestants and hand over her crown.

When asked what is next for Emilie-rae after this new little miracle arrives, she replied, “I’ve been given an

amazing opportunity to be able to pick, and be welcomed to return back to some of the Charities I have worked with.”

“I find this work very fulfilling: not everyone you volunteer for is a good fit.”

“But for me I’ve been lucky enough to have met some great people, and I have some amazing contacts in and outside Australia to explore when I am ready,” she said.

News Of The Area wishes Port Stephens very own Mrs Galaxy Australia all the very best in this next chapter.

“With a lot of old heads venturing out for the day, it was good to see.”

It is easy to get distracted. Back in the day when we worked from home and used word processors, our distractions were perhaps clouds flitting across the sky, or a magpie warbling, or the postie delivering our mail.

Now, the Internet has changed things. Say, during your morning tea break, you decide to check what is going on in your friends’ lives. You scroll through and someone likes a memory of your kids and they send you a message about the time you dined together in Austria. You ‘like’ this message, but that seems dismissive, so you write a couple of sentences about the amazing schnitzels.

You add an emoji, then another, and another.

They respond with another message. You give them the ‘thumbs up’ emoji which means, the conversation is over. They give you a ‘thumbs up’ emoji and you realise you should send them a link about Internet protocol.

You are about to log off, when you spot a video of a guy using a device called a Beard Bro, and even though you don’t have a beard or a bro, you decide to watch it. Now your tea is cold. Next your eyes swivel to an adorable video of a panda eating a carrot. You watch it twice. It’s very cute. You think about how much you’d like to own a panda. Knowing that is impossible, you think about how much you’d like to eat a carrot.

You head to the fridge. Just above the carrots is half a Tiramisu. You take a spoonful.

Then another. You take the whole packet out of the fridge and eat straight from the container (you can do that when you don’t have work colleagues).

Returning to the Internet, you look up diets for people who eat Tiramisu when they should be eating carrots. Instead you come across a video of a man trying to teach his Labrador pup how to walk down stairs. You think about how much you’d like a Labrador.

You feel bad about having these thoughts when your faithful cattle dog is at your feet.

You take him for a walk.

Mr JU, I think you should work in the library. Or disconnect your Internet. Or get a job as a teacher or a nurse or a paramedic.

They don’t have time for this nonsense.

10 year old Amy Squires, a Cadet Member of the Club won Saturday’s C1 Ladies competition. Well done Amy from the Membership at the Golf Club. Go Amy. Meanwhile, not to be outdone by his daughter, on C 2, her father Paul, won the A Grade with 42.

Congratulations to the Squires.

Highlights of the week:

John Steven was the Outright Leader across both Mens’ fields in Wednesdays’ competition. On his course there were 9 players with 40 points or better. On the alternative course there were 15 players with 40 points or better. John with 48 points deserves the accolade. Congratulations John. q Bruce Walker on the field in his playing years.

Peter to the English League where he played in the Wembley Cup final but unfortunately his team lost.

After this he moved to the Roosters & was coached by Arthur Beetson. In 1989 he moved to Newcastle to play for the Knights until 1991.

Peter then left the Knights to play in France. Again his team made the Grand Final which unfortunately they lost.

On his return to Australia & played for Wyong under Rip Taylor and with Michael Hagan.

Peter then returned home to Coach Kempsey where his team made the Grand Final.

Peter returned to the Knights as an Assistant Coach to Rip Taylor with the under 20’s that included Kade Snowden & Aquila Uate where his team made the Grand Final.

MEN of League are holding a lunch on 16 February at Fingal Bay Sports Club where you can meet some of the codes great past players.

Members of the wider community are invited to attend the Men Of League event which will raise funds to support members of the Rugby League family who have fallen on hard times.

Bruce Walker, State Manager of the Foundation told News Of The Area, “We are all about helping members of the Rugby League family, and that includes referees, players and volunteers.

“In some cases we help with operations or help with paying the rent and supply food vouchers to assist people who have been involved with Rugby League.”

He believes it is important for the local community to know that the Men Of League Events are open and everyone is welcome.

But when you add the soulful sounds of renowned

local artist Kylie Jane, your afternoon couldn’t get much better.

Kylie first came to prominence on the hit Channel 9 show ‘The Voice’ back in 2016.

During the blind audition stage, Kylie proved that she

knows how to silence a crowd, as well as get the big names in the Judges’ chairs to take notice, with her unique talent.

GRAHAMSTOWN ROAD TEMPORARY CLOSURE Due to construction work Grahamstown Road will be closed for approximately five weeks from Tuesday 20 February 2018.

New pipelines are being constructed across Grahamstown Rd, which is built upon the dam wall. To maintain the impermeable seal of the dam wall, open excavation is required, and temporarily closing Grahamstown Rd is necessary.

Closure of the cycleway The cycleway along Grahamstown Dam near the intersection of Richardson Rd will be temporarily closed from Tuesday 20 February 2018 for approximately six weeks.

Peter Wilson Memorial

attracts over 1800 players

IT’S been a huge weekend of sport at the Bay with the Peter Wilson Memorial Championships at Tomaree Sports Complex attracting 1836 players.

The Junior Touch Football Championship is well respected.

Mandy Moore of Nelson Bay Touch Football Association (NBTA) told News Of The Area, “ We have been hosting the Peter Wilson Memorial Championships for 12 years.

During that time the tournament has grown significantly this year there will be 135 teams, with estimated 1836 players.

“Unfortunately this year PSC have let us done by not ensuring the fields are at their best. A sprinkler system pump broke down over 6 weeks ago and has not been repaired and council have failed to water the fields affected resulting in dry fields.”

“This is the biggest regional touch tournament in NSW,” she said.

In addition to the players there are in excess of 135 referees, plus selectors, tournament, and personal supporters.

In total NBTA expect in excess of 4000 visitors to the area related to the competition. Without the support of a dedicated committee and NBTA members this tournament would not be the success it is.

Following this event teams will participate in the State Tournament at Port Macquarie, this year 358 teams will take part.

Events such as this bring significant economic impact to the region.

Nelson Bay came equal third in club championship, with two teams taking out the Grand final the 18 and 16 girls.

Nelson Bay also had 6 teams make the final series, which was a great result.

The Bay was also represented with female referee of the tournament Angela Helly who won the Sam Clarke Female referee of the tournament award.

With six local referees being upgraded in the level of referring, and three local refs were awarded grand final games.

This was the biggest Peter Wilson Memorial tournament ever, with in excess of 400 games of touch played over the two days.
