OVER 500 dancers from across NSW and interstate will kick up their heels in Nelson Bay this weekend for the 17th annual Rock ‘N’ Roll Festival.

The event offers three days of free entertainment across three dance floors from 13-15 October at Wests Diggers auditorium in Nelson Bay. To get fellow dancers and members of the public in a hip-swivelling mood, the Nelson Bay Rock ‘N’ Roll Club has the auditorium decked out, and dancers will be dressed in traditional 1950s style.

Keith often attended the dances, and quickly picked up dance moves that he has been perfecting over the decades.

Keith and his wife, Diana, formed the club with two other couples and, 17 years later, they have 68 active members, but new members are always welcome.

“There’s no age limit,” Diana told News Of The Area.

“We do have a shortage of men.”

There will be various

dance styles showcased over the three-day event and for the second year running, on Saturday night, the audience will be treated to a professional dance demonstration by the Sydney Swing Catz.

“A first for the festival is a swing dance workshop by the Sydney Swing Catz,” Keith said.

“There are also three dance bands with free entry.”

The Nelson Bay Rock ‘N’ Roll Club holds a regular dance class.

“No skills are required,” Keith said.

“You can join in or you are welcome to just come along and watch.”

Wazza Rides for Variety NELSON Bay builder of over 40 years, husband, father, pop and Rotarian, Warwick Mathieson (Waz) is embarking on yet another fundraising adventure, this time for Variety, the Children’s Charity.

The Variety Postie Bike Dash is a six day charity ride throughout NSW on Honda CT110 Postie Bikes.

The event goes off the beaten track, travelling through the bush and countryside, stopping in at rural towns and schools for meals and entertainment

along the way.

With the event due to start on 5 November and with entrants required to raise a minimum of $2,000 each, Waz is asking for everyone’s support through sponsorship.

When asked about his reasons behind this challenge, Waz told News Of The Area, “I’ve had a pretty good run at life and think that this is a great way to have a bit of fun while raising money for kids doing it tough.”

“I’ve got two young grandsons and they are also major reasons behind deciding to support the Variety Club.”

Manager of Corporate Services at Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Council has been leasing this site for use as a public car park and, despite the sale, we can extend this lease out to November 2019.

We also continue to provide limited car parking on the ground level of the multi deck car park in Donald Street, as well as the car parks adjoining the eastern and northern sides of the Rivers store in Donald Street.”

Ms Foster believes that the recently undertaken Traffic

and Transport Study which was conducted as part of the Nelson Bay Town Centre and Foreshore Strategy found that parking operates under capacity during a typical weekday, however, capacity is reached during peak holiday periods.

The land came up for sale during the period which Council was operating in caretaker mode and was unable to be involved in any purchase negotiations.

“We are investigating ways of increasing parking supply in the short term through encouraging greater turnover and, where opportunities exist, exploring the feasibility of land purchases and leases in appropriate locations in the town centre,” she said.

Chemmart Nelson Bay, who is also on the Board of the Tomaree Business Chamber, told News Of The Area, “If people can’t find a parking space it translates to loss of business and loss of jobs, which leads to more empty retail spaces.”

“Ultimately the Chamber would like to see a long-term plan from Council for Nelson Bay for parking, so that traders will know what our future is,” he said.

Ann Evans of Addison Partners who is also on the Board of the Tomaree Business Chamber said, “It is not just retail services that are impacted, business services operating in the area are also impacted by lack of parking.”

NOMINATIONS are now open for the Port Stephens Annual Awards, which celebrate the people who have made an outstanding contribution to our local community.

Held on Australia Day, the awards are an opportunity to formally recognise community members who make Port Stephens a great place to live, work and play.

Elizabeth Akerman, Council’s Acting Community Development and Engagement Coordinator, said this year sees the addition of a new category.

“We’re really excited about the introduction of the ‘Cultural Endeavour’ category, which will be awarded to someone who has added to our cultural experience,

whether that be through art, music, language, education

or events, to name a few,” Ms Akerman said.

Incident on Cycleway sparks concern

“As always, we’re also seeking nominations for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Freeman of Port Stephens, the Port Stephens Medal and Sportsperson of the Year,” she added.

David Sams received the Port Stephens Medal last year for his tireless community work, including his part in founding the Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network.

He said the Port Stephens Annual Awards are a way to give back to those who give so much.

“There are people in our community who are true doers, who sacrifice their time and energy to build meaningful connections and

get things done,” Mr Sams said.

“I know that those who do extraordinary things for our community are often the most humble, and this awards program is the perfect opportunity to give thanks to them for their tireless efforts,” he added.

The 2016 Sportsperson of the Year, Tony Gillespie, says being recognised was a truly humbling and inspirational experience.

“I do not do what I do for myself, so when I received this incredible acknowledgement from those closest to me, I was quite literally speechless,” he said.

Mr Gillespie said that while people rarely volunteer

for the accolades, the Port Stephens Awards are the perfect way to let someone know they are appreciated.

“If someone has enriched your life and the lives of others of their own free will, then nominating them will enable their invaluable hard work get acknowledged,” he said.

ONE couple is warning parents to be vigilant after they experienced what they claim was a terrifying incident on Fingal Bay Cycleway in Tomaree National Park, which allegedly occurred on the long weekend.

The couple have asked that their identities are not revealed after their young children’s lives were allegedly endangered by a trail bike rider.

The children’s father told News Of The Area, “The trail bike came out of nowhere and headed down the path straight at our children. We were too far away to intervene and the rider ignored our calls for them to slow down, he sped at the kids, it was terrifying.”

He believes that something should

be done and that all parents would understand how helpless he felt as he watched, believing his children were about to be run over, on what was supposed to be a fun family outing in a safe space.

“The rider must have been going at around 60 kilometres per hour and he went right between our two children, if there had been a collision we believe we would have lost our children or they would have been seriously hurt,” he said.

The father spoke to a local resident who mentioned that it is an ongoing problem.

While the family would like to see the rider apprehended, they would also like to warn families of the potential danger from trail bike riders on the cycleway.

You know, there’s people out there who have a ‘my door is always open’ approach.

I, my dear friend, am not one of them.

When people drop in, you want to be prepared with some mineral water in a blue carafe, and a platter of Brie, quince paste and water crackers.

You want jazz music playing in the background, the cushions plumped, the toilet fragrantly scented with lemon and ginger essence and the children skipping around the garden collecting artistically-shaped pieces of driftwood for their nature project.

You also want people to think that you live like that all the time, in a sort of effortless state befitting an Instagram photo or two.

Then you can glide across your polished floorboards and say, “Oh, Simone, how lovely to see you. What an unexpected, though delightful surprise. I was just baking some poppy-seed bread. Excuse those papers on the table; it is the documentation for my three sponsor children. Let me move it aside. Cheese and crackers? An Earl Grey tea?”

If friends drop in unannounced, they’ll see that you’re still in your pyjamas at lunchtime, the sink is full of dishes, the kids are drinking lime cordial and watching Game of Thrones, and you look like Iggy Pop instead of Iggy Azalea, which is never a good thing.

If there’s an unexpected knock at the door, you can always hide in the pantry.

I do this a lot, which is why I’ve gained five kilos in the past month.

Or get a gate, or a goat or a German Shepherd and a sign that says, ‘Enter at your own risk’.

When visiting others, the correct etiquette is to call first.

This allows time for frantic cushion arrangement, dirty dish disposal and scented candle preparation (as a minimum).

It’s just good manners.

MAYOR Ryan Palmer has accepted an invitation to be guest speaker at the Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association (TRRA) Annual General Meeting commencing at 7.00pm on 17 October in the Auditorium of the Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

“This will be an opportunity for Tomaree residents to hear the mayor’s vision for the future of Port Stephens and be informed on some of the changes he may have in mind for a new era of governance,” TRRA president Geoff Washington said.

In the lead up to our September election the majority of candidates, including Ryan Palmer, supported initiatives directed at increased transparency and accountability for the council in its decision making and

administration.

“Reinstatement of live webcasting of council meetings was a welcome promise.

We are greatly encouraged by a notice of motion in the Agenda for the 10 October Port Stephens Council meeting sponsored by the mayor and Cr Nell, which calls for the processes to be set in motion to bring back webcasting,” Mr Washington said.

Residents who now have to travel up to 60 kms to Raymond Terrace to a meeting will again be able to watch proceedings from home.

While some members of the previous council had concerns about the prospect of defamation actions, there are many councils across NSW who webcast their meetings and have done so for some years.

A likely excuse

FROM an accountant in prison to paperwork flying out the window, Australians are pretty good at coming up with excuses as to why they haven’t lodged their tax returns on time.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is reminding taxpayers that there is just one month left to lodge their own tax returns.

Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said that over 2.5 million people have already lodged their own returns via myTax, with another 5.2 million people lodging via an agent, and she expects millions more in October.

“The upcoming deadline shouldn’t be cause for

concern though, because our suite of online services makes it easier than ever before to get your return in on time,” she said.

“If you plan to lodge your own tax return using the ATO’s online service myTax, you need to lodge by 31 October 2017. If something happens and you miss the deadline, you should lodge as soon as you can to minimise penalties.”

The ATO receives many far-fetched excuses from late lodgers, such as: “My paperwork flew out the car window when I was on my way to see the accountant.”

Catherine Cusack Weeds Wanda

CATHERINE Cusack MP and Member of the Legislative Council visited with the members of Soldiers Point Salamander Bay Landcare last week.

Catherine Cusack MLC, is the former shadow Environment Minister and Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter.

She visited Port Stephens

on holiday and East Ward Councillor Jaimie Abbott arranged for her to visit the group.

Walter Lamond of the Landcare team took Catherine on a walk through Mambo Wanda Wetlands.

After they spent about an hour touring the area they joined the entire team for morning tea.

Bay Landcare told News Of The Area, “Catherine was very sympathetic and understanding of the challenges which the group and the Wanda Mambo Wetlands face.”

She believes that Landcare groups make a significant contribution to the local environment both in Port Stephens and nationally.

Denise has recently received exciting news that she was successful with a grant from Maitland City Council to create some fascinating street art.

Denise told News Of The Area, “I was ecstatic when I found out I was one of the recipients for the Arts about Town Grant with Maitland City Council, for their

Creative Streets Initiative.”

“A chance to share my art on a street level and to a wider audience is just so exciting to me as an artist.”

“I am honoured to have the opportunity Maitland City Council has offered to emerging artists like myself.”

Denise is creating several chandeliers handcrafted using plastic bottles to celebrate the history of Maitland and shed light on plastic ocean pollution.

These chandeliers will be installed along the Levee, the walkway along the Hunter River in Maitland.

They will hang over the existing heritage style street lights, which will be visible both day and night.

The process for these chandeliers involves Denise collecting bottles, washing and cutting them into circular shapes, sealing the edges and embellishing with oceanic inspired patterns.

They are then threaded together to form chandeliers using cable ties, wire and poly tubing.

Each one is unique and approximately 1.5 metres in length.

Denise estimates she will use around 1000 bottles.

‘SIMPLY the best’ is the verdict on Little Beach Boathouse which has been awarded the Best Seafood Restaurant in the NSW Restaurant & Catering Association Awards which were held this month.

Little Beach Boathouse Chef Ben Way told News Of The Area, “The next stage of the competition is the national stage, where the Little Beach Boathouse will compete in the category of Regional and Metropolitan Informal Restaurants in Australia.”

He believes it is an honour

for Little Beach Boathouse to be in such esteemed company for the awards and believes the competition will be formidable.

“I am shocked and proud that we have won this award and it is a credit to the staff who work at the Boathouse which make the magic happen; their passion, commitment and enthusiasm from everyone on the team from sous chef to dishwasher, is why we are here,” he said.

OVER 180 masked ladies attended a Masked Ball at Broughtons at the Bay. The ladies who run the function, in support of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, are all breast cancer survivors who were assisted by the group and now wish to help support the group.

All money raised from the games, raffle prizes, and auctions stays within Tomaree Peninsula to assist local ladies undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer.

Bay Sea Slug Census

Dr Tom Davis of Southern Cross University told News Of The Area, “One of the outcomes of the census will be the scientific paper which will be released which addresses the important role that members of the public or citizen scientists can play when it comes to monitoring the environment.”

He believes that by engaging with citizen scientists it is possible to gather reliable data which can be used for scientific purposes.

“People can look for sea slugs around Port Stephens, however you will need sharp eyes to find them as they are very small and yet an important part of the local ecology,” he said.

The Sea Slug Census was supported by local divers who performed the role of citizen scientists and Let’s Go Dive Adventures who supplied prizes for divers who participated on the day.

VIBRANT colours, spots and delicate frills may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about sea slugs.

But that is exactly what the 32 participants of the Nelson Bay Annual Sea Slug census found this September.

While hundreds of Port Stephens residents turn out for the annual Dolphin Census, the Sea Slug Census is a lesser known event which has occurred 15 times at Nelson Bay. The results of the census were not only colourful, but ones which attest to the health of the waterways and even included the identification of eight new species.

A total of 72 species were identified during the

census, with the Flabellina rubrolineata being the most sighted species closely followed by the stunningly beautiful Ceratosoma amoenum, commonly known as the clown nudibranch (sea slug) with its white base and stunning orange, and purple/ pink spots.

This brings the total number of sea slugs identified

Spokesperson Taurie Lalor, President, Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group Inc., told News Of The Area, “In the nine months so far this year, the group has assisted 18 new breast cancer patients, as well as assisting past patients with ongoing treatments.”

That equates to 306 transfers from Tomaree Peninsula to Newcastle or Maitland so far this year, and in May this year the group had a staggering number of 65 drives.

“As well as driving ladies from Tomaree Peninsula to medical appointments in

Newcastle or Maitland, the group provides, on an asneed basis, house cleaning, lawn mowing, child minding and face-to-face support,” she said. $8,000 was raised from at the Masked Ball which will assist many more ladies.

Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group will be holding the annual `In the Pink Breakfast’ at Nelson Bay Bowling Club on Wednesday 18 October 2017, commencing at 7am, with special guest speaker Melissa Hinston, 2017 Newcastle Woman of the Year.

Tickets, which are $30 each, are available from Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

THE long anticipated opening of the Wellness Centre at One Mile Beach has arrived and it proved a hit with locals.

Hundreds of Port Stephens locals turned out to explore the centre and what it and the practitioners who will be based there have to offer.

The centre is a wonderful green space with a tranquil vibe, perfect for a yoga class or simply a place to indulge in some ‘me time’.

An African Drumming Circle proved a popular attraction during the opening and regular drumming circles will be held at the centre.

Cherie McDougall of the Wellness Centre told News Of The Area, “While there are still things to come it is great to have all the people come to look at the Wellness Centre, on such a lovely day.”

She believes that the centre provides a unique range of services and classes within the Port Stephens region.

“It is good to be able to help people,” she said.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer and Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington were on both hand to open the centre, which was also visited by Councillor Sarah Smith on the day.

Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “I think the

Wellness Centre is a one of a kind facility for the area which will be great for Port Stephens.”

He believes that the services at the centre may assist people in dealing with the stress of day-to-day life.

“It was great to see so many people attend the opening,” he said.

Guests sampled classes and therapies including massages at the opening.

There was plenty being showcased on the day from yoga and massage, to skin care and fragrant essential oils.

RECLAIM the run is in its third year at Nelson Bay. You can join in the seven kilometre run or four kilometre walk at 6pm on 27 October.

The run starts at d’Albora Marinas at Nelson Bay and the group will hear from guest speakers Kirrily Dear, the founder of Reclaim the Run, and local White Ribbon campaigner Roger Yeo. Runners and walkers are invited to join in on the event in protest against all forms of violence towards women.

The event will have a designated lead runner, setting around a six-minute pace for the seven kilometres.

The four kilometre walk will follow the same route but has an earlier turn point for those who want to join in but can’t do seven kilometres, with a tail runner or walker.

Singlets and t-shirts are for sale to help raise funds towards our local Yacaaba Centre.

Jo Banner told News Of The Area, “We want everyone to come and join us to ‘Reclaim the Run’ because we love running with our friends, but we shouldn’t have to!”
