LEANNE Sibert doesn’t need presents for Mother’s Day to make her feel special, as her two adopted daughters, Lily and Katelyn, are gifts of a lifetime.

Like all parents, Leanne and her husband, Dave, have many precious memories of their baby girls who clung to them, the toddlers they chased, and the joys of adolescence.

Leanne said Lily became part of their family when she was just a few weeks old, and Katelyn was welcomed three years later.

“The happiest days of my life were when we adopted the girls,” Leanne told News Of The Area.

“I am very blessed to have my two daughters, and I am very happy that Dave and I have been able to enjoy the life that we have had with them.”

mother, she regards Leanne as her mum, “and it will always be that way”.

“I have been with her since I was six months old, she is a lovely lady and I am so grateful to be able to call her mum,” Katelyn said.

“She has given up so much for me, and I will always love her.”

Katelyn said she has never considered herself adopted, as she has always been “part of such a loving family”.

“My life wouldn’t be what it is today if I had been cared for by anyone else,” she said.

Mother’s Day will be celebrated this Sunday, and although the special day isn’t the same for every mother or every family, Katelyn said it is the gratitude and love shown that is important.

“No matter what plans you have to show you care on Mother’s Day, the message is always the same, thanks Mum, I love you,” Katelyn said.

Warnings on $100 note counterfeit

Members of the Tomaree Business Chamber were made aware of the counterfeit notes by the Nelson Bay Branch of St George Bank.

A business customer of St George Bank received a counterfeit note and brought it into the bank for confirmation of its counterfeit status, and also to remove it from circulation.

The fake $100 was of high quality, but could be distinguished from the real deal as it was approximately one millimetre shorter and one millimetre narrower than a regular note.

Some of the smaller font writing and symbols were a little blurred when compared to a genuine note, and the fake note was considerably thicker than a genuine note.

SALAMANDER Bay resident Wendy Martin is the owner of Salamander Village Florist.

The florist recently celebrated her 10th Birthday in business, a huge milestone for a local business.

Wendy Martin has lived on the Tomaree Peninsula for more than 19 years with partner, Jai and their three boys aged 19, 12 and 10 years of age.

Ms Martin studied floristry in Ultimo in 1993 and has worked in various florists over the past 20 years.

In 2007, she opened her own florist, Salamander Village Florist.

“I had always dreamed of opening my own florist shop and when my youngest son was three months old I decided to take the leap,” Wendy Martin told Bay News Of The Area.

The florist is situated on the strip of shops at Old Salamander Bay and provides a great service to the community.

Photo supplied “As well as providing flowers for events such as weddings, birthdays and bereavements, we also conduct floristry classes for children during school holidays,” Ms Martin said.

Floristry has changed so much compared to when Ms Martin first began her training with styles changing from the structured type to today’s more freestyle designs.

There has been a greater

focus on DIY weddings recently with the introduction of Boho style weddings.

Salamander Village Florist has won the Port Stephens Small Business Award in 2011, 2015 and 2016.

Ms Martin also received an Award of Excellence 2014 for “Florist of the Year” awarded by the Sydney Flower Markets.

The day coincides with the birthday anniversary of social reformer Florence Nightingale, the influential founder of modern nursing.

Kristie Spark will celebrate the day with her nursing colleagues.

“The hospital supplies

us with lunch and dinner to thank us for our hard work,” she said.

Kristie has been nursing for 15 years and emphasises the importance of teamwork to the profession.

“The most rewarding part is being able to be part of a team where we all have the same goal,” she said.

“Seeing someone ill and then knowing you had a little something to do with making them better is a fabulous feeling.”

The stereotypes in nursing unfortunately still exist, but the occupation is far more than a supplementary care role.

Nurses work in consultation with a range of health care professionals, train undergraduate nursing students, and supervise postgraduate nurses.

Kristie told News Of The Area that the biggest misconception is that nurses automatically know what to do in every situation when caring for patients.

“We are still learning every day, and the doctors and other staff are continuing to inform us on new procedures and new and improved ways to give our patients the best care,” she said.

For Kristie, a holistic approach that combines skills with personal qualities is an essential prerequisite to the demands of nursing.

“Ultimately, I believe you need compassion. When you show a patient compassion, they are at ease and have trust in you, which assists in their recovery,” she said.

“You really need to be kind, understanding, and always ready to listen to a patient.”

Mental Health Awareness For High School Students

FOLLOWING the evening event of Lifting The Lid On Mental Illness, Professor Helen Christensen and Professor Cyndi Shannon Weickert attended St Philip’s Christian College (SPCC) and Tomaree High School, where students from Years 10, 11 and 12 had the opportunity to listen to world leading professors as they shared their findings and knowledge on mental health.

Dr Tim Petterson, Principal of St Philip’s Christian College, told News Of The Area, “It is very impressive, the advances being made in the area of mental health, raising awareness and reducing stigma is essential.”

News Of The Area spoke to Phoebe Trott and Noel Davis, two St Philip’s Year 11 students.

These are their combined responses: Do you feel that this type of presentation reduces the stigma associated with mental illness?

Yes, this presentation shed light on the causes associated with mental illnesses (psychologically and chemically).

During a game, Dane snapped his cruciate ligament which saw an end to his football career.

On returning to the Bay, it was a natural progression due to Dane’s loyalty, that he gained employment at PRD Nationwide Shoal Bay.

Large numbers at Mental Illness Forum

By Mandy ELLIS MENTAL Illness is common and serious with approximately 560,000 people in Australia receiving a Mental Health Care Plan at some stage during their lives.

World leading Professor Helen Christensen and Professor Cyndi Shannon Weickert delivered incredible insight into the research of mental illness and schizophrenia at the Lifting The Lid On Mental Illness forum.

Professor Helen Christensen presented current research in mental illness, particularly, depression, anxiety and self-harm.

The audience listened to the frightening statistics in regards to young people, with one in four experiencing a mental illness and 65 percent not seeking help.

Websites and mobile apps were recommended by the Professor.

SPARX, a unique, awardwinning computer program

helps young people learn skills to deal with feeling down, depressed or stressed.

SHUTi, an innovative, online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy program has been designed for those suffering insomnia. iBobbly, a trial of the world’s first suicide prevention app, was designed especially for use by indigenous people on mobile phones or tablet devices.

Professor Cyndi Shannon Weickert focussed on schizophrenia and shared that researchers have now learnt that for some schizophrenia sufferers, there is a minute inflammation in one of the molecules in our brains.

Historically, researchers had broken down the molecules as far as they thought they could, but new research has proven the molecules can be broken down two times more and this is where the inflammation is taking place for some people.

IN its 11th year, the Bluewater Country Music Festival has attracted the largest number of venues on record.

With 28 venues, this year’s festival includes two country music cruises.

Stretching across the entire Tomaree Peninsula, the festival will host Country Music Artists, Line Dancers and Bush Poets.

Port Stephens Heritage grants help local communities with issues related to heritage planning and conservation.

Wayne Wallis, General Manager of Port Stephens Council, told News Of The Area, “We will use this money primarily to allow the community to apply for small grants to maintain heritage items.”

“Whether it be an item such as a painting, eaves on a heritage building or historic gates, maintenance on historical items is costly, but this funding can help to alleviate this a little.”

“We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating our local heritage at the upcoming heritage festival, where we will be showcasing some wonderful heritage items and focusing on some local architecture,” he said.

Some of you may recognise Jillian from her stance on saving the Hunter’s oldest parkland, Boomerang Park, from development.

Jillian told News Of The Area, “I believe I have a public duty to ensure that public land remains in public hands, especially culturally significant parkland like Boomerang Park.

“Such beautiful green open spaces are vital to the health and well-being of our rapidly expanding built

environments, and I will fight to retain them for generations to come.”

“It’s simple, if you don’t have a healthy environment, you don’t have a healthy community, and that goes for areas all over Port Stephens from one end to the other,” she said.

Over the last three years of campaigning for Boomerang Park, Jillian has witnessed firsthand what she describes to be the shortfalls with the current Council system.

Jillian said, “It is these shortfalls of ethics, transparency, accountability and community representation that has motivated me to run for Council.”

The announcement marks this year’s Australian Heritage Festival, which runs nationwide until 21 May. Mr MacDonald told News Of The Area, “Looking after our Heritage is everyone’s responsibility, and communities play an important role in maintaining and promoting local heritage.”

OPINION Dear News Of The Area, ‘Question time’ finished in NSW Parliament and I spent the next frustrating three and a half hours driving to get to my destination.

But when I got to Wests Diggers Nelson Bay and saw almost 500 people attending a community forum on mental health, I felt enormous relief.

“Lifting the Lid on Mental Illness” was a success.

People had come in droves to Nelson Bay, to learn more about mental illness.

It was the largest community forum I’ve ever seen in Port Stephens.

With a discussion about the latest scientific developments, it captured a mood for hope.

I’d be careful about opening Pandora’s Box. Who knows what revelations a confrontation will bring.

Look, maybe she just didn’t recognise that it was you on your wedding day.

You know, when you buy a frame there’s often an inserted photo of an extremely photogenic couple with dazzling smiles and flawless skin (to show you what the frame would look like if you’d been genetically blessed).

I actually prefer to leave the sample photo in the frame, so visitors think I come from an aristocratic pedigree, instead of the sad and sorry oddballs that form my family tree.

Yes, I say, as they admire the photo. That’s my sister Gisele, a model from Berlin, and Claude, her stockbroker husband.

Is it an attractive cat? Some cats are absolutely gorgeous.

From an aesthetic point of view, a Siamese or Burmese feline in a frame may complement your motherin-law’s décor better than a photo of you and Roger frolicking through the vineyards.

The positive in all of this is that you can now stick to a gift-giving theme.

For Mother’s Day, I suggest you take back those chocolates and slippers and instead give her a bag of kitty litter and a three-month supply of all-wormer.

When it came to questions from the floor, the gap between academia and day-to-day realities was apparent.

This is why these discussions are so important.

The voices from the floor were clear in their frustrations due to longstanding gaps in services, resources and care, gaps acknowledged by the expert panel.

These are the gaps that we are trying to see addressed.

A message I received after the forum summed it up for me: “We can’t make it right without enough people saying it’s got to be better.”

In Port Stephens, we have been saying for a long time, and we will continue to say, “it’s got to be better”.

Because the risks are too high if we don’t.

Each year, more Australians die from suicide than motoring fatalities.

Tragically, Port Stephens has more than its fair share.

We are, however, fortunate to have the hardworking Port Stephens Suicide Prevention Network (PSSPN) and Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth (COPSY) who are raising awareness, supporting families and seeking solutions to address the gaps.

Alongside PSSPN and COPSY, we have strong community networks and the support of Lifeline.

Frontline general practitioners are straining under the weight of sheer need, inadequate resources and a lack of referral points.

NAPLAN Testing Time

THIS week, students across Port Stephens will sit the federal government’s mandated test, NAPLAN. The National Assessment Plan seeks to test students in years 3, 5, 7, and 9 to check whether or not they are meeting prescribed curriculum outcomes.

This year, the tests take place from 7 to 9 May in classrooms across Australia.

Students in each of the NAPLAN selected year levels are assessed on language conventions,

writing, reading, and numeracy in tests that go from 40 and 45 minutes for year 3 students, up to 45 and 60 minutes for year 9 students.

With so much emphasis placed on NAPLAN, young children and their parents increasingly feel stressed and concerned about the validity and reason for the test as has been reported extensively.

News Of The Area asked two respected researchers their views on the educational outcomes of this assessment task.

Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle, Dr Tom Griffiths, told News Of

POLICE have detained a man who allegedly tried to stab an Ambulance paramedic who was treating him overnight near Port Stephens.

About 10.40pm on Saturday 6 May 2017, Ambulance paramedics were called to a home in John Parade at Lemon Tree Passage.

Two paramedics approached the 37-year-old male patient to medically examine him.

When the man was told that he would be conveyed to hospital for further treatment he became agitated and uncooperative.

As one of the paramedics continued with the

examination the man allegedly grabbed a knife and swung it at the paramedic.

Police were contacted and arrived a short time later to discover the patient had locked himself in a garage.

Stand for Justice

A VERY common comment from people is that they can’t find a Justice of the Peace in Port Stephens.

There are nearly 100 JPs in Medowie and if you consider Raymond Terrace, Tilligerry and the Bay, there are over 500 JPs. Justices of the Peace provide an invaluable service to the community on a voluntary basis.

These services include witnessing of Statutory Declarations and Affidavits.

They also include certifying copies of documents and photographic identification.

There is a service at Raymond Terrace Market Place where members of the Raymond Terrace Branch of the Northern NSW Federation of Justices of the Peace (NNSWFJPs) operate a Community Stand.

This is conducted each Tuesday from 9.30am to 1.30pm and is located near the Woolworths Supermarket.

The NNSWFJPs Port Stephens Branch also holds a Community Stand at Salamander Shopping Centre on the first Saturday of every month (January to November) from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Justices of the Peace do not have to be members of the NNSWFJPs, however for a nominal membership fee, members are kept advised of any legal requirements and changes.

The Federation also provides tutorials to make sure members are fully aware of their responsibilities.

Previously, there were quite a number of people who could witness documents, but in NSW, statutory documents and affidavits can only be witnessed by qualified people.

A NSW statutory declaration must be taken by a person holding a position specified by the relevant Act as one which entitles the holder to take a statutory declaration, the person must be an ‘authorised witness’.

In NSW, an authorised witness must be a justice of the peace, notary public, commissioner of the court for taking affidavits, legal practitioner or a person authorised to administer an oath.

International Flights on Horizon

q Newcastle Airport has begun its expansion to cater for international flights.

THIS week saw Newcastle Airport come one step closer to direct international flights, with construction commencing on the internal fitout of border processing areas.

The current work will see the installation of necessary security technology, IT technology, passenger screening equipment and furniture for the border agencies.

The project, with an estimated cost of $1.9 million, will be carried out by Hunterbased construction firm,

Tomaree High, high for state’s most crowded THE NSW Auditor General’s damning report into the Berejiklian Government’s school infrastructure backlog has revealed that high schools in the Hunter top the list for being the state’s most crowded.

Forty one per cent of (see table below) of high schools across the Hunter are bursting at the seams with classrooms full or exceeding capacity.

The Department of Education estimates that 3,518 additional high school classrooms will be needed across NSW by 2031. At the Berejiklian Government’s current rate of building it will take 45 years to construct the number of school places NSW will need in 15 years.

The underfunding of school infrastructure has led to increasing reliance on demountable classrooms and squeezing the maximum number of students into a classroom.

A spokesperson for the airport told News Of The Area, “If we don’t have the necessary infrastructure, we won’t ever be able to have international flights.”

“The completion of these fitout works is the next step in bringing international

flights to Newcastle,” the spokesperson said.

The new developments are being built in the allocated area that was designed for this purpose in 2015.

This area has remained mostly unused space since then.

Newcastle Airport does not currently have any commitments from any particular airlines to fly to specific locations.

This is just another step in the right direction in bringing international flights to the region.

There is currently no set date as to when international flights may be available from the airport.

Smoochy Sam Needs a Home

By Rachael VAUGHAN ALL this week’s Rescue Pet of the Week wants is to be loved and given affection.

Introducing Samy the kitten, who is currently in care with the Kitty Rescue Project.

Amanda, founder of the KITTY Rescue Project, told News Of The Area, “Samy is absolutely the most gorgeous, smoochiest, most lovable, snuggable, talkative little guy.”

“All Samy wants in life is to be close to people.”

“He just loves to head butt, cuddle, and purr, all while being as close to you as possible,” she said.

If you are after a lap cat, Samy is definitely the man for you.

Samy is approximately six to eight months old, and his carers report he is wonderful with kids, and other cats.

He is also learning to get along with dogs.

“He really is just an

Aerial Spraying of Bitou Bush MidCoast Council will be carrying out aerial herbicide spraying at various locations along our coastal strip for the control of Bitou Bush. Scheduled works will occur on a number of days during the month of May and June 2017, weather permitting. This activity is undertaken as a part of a broader, collaborative and coordinated program with other public authorities and land management agencies on the Mid North Coast of NSW. Council’s contractor, experienced in aerial spraying, will be following recommendations contained within the “best practice guidelines for aerial spraying of Bitou Bush in New South Wales”, as published by The Department of Environment and Conservation, Natural Heritage Trust and National Parks and Wildlife Service. Two herbicides will be utilised within different areas determined by site specific requirements.

Lynx WG (Metsulfuron methyl 600g/Kg) will be applied at 20 – 30g/ha or Weedmaster Duo (Glyphosate 360g/L) will be applied at 2 L/ha. These herbicides will be applied, as per requirements of APVMA off label permit 12251 for the control of Bitou Bush in coastal sand dunes, bushland and grassland.

The following areas will be closed to public access for the duration of the spraying or from 7am till 5pm on the specific treatment days: Crowdy Head Reserve; Nine Mile Beach Tuncurry; Pilot Hill (lower area adjacent to southern break wall) Forster; Boomerang Point Headland and Sandbar / Cellito Beach at Pacific Palms Bennett’s Beach, Yacabba Peninsula and Jimmy’s Beach at Hawks Nest. Areas adjacent to Crowdy Head Reserve; Forster Coastal Patrol, Smiths Lake Skate Park, Pacific Palms Sports Complex and Myall Park Hawks Nest will be closed for utilisation as Helipads.

Thursday 25 May at 11:30am, six hundred riders will set off from the spectacular shores of Nelson Bay at D’Albora Marinas to complete the short, yet challenging Stage One (of four stages) of the Port to Port mountain bike stage race.
