Five lives were saved

THE dramatic rescue of five people from the surf at Birubi Beach this week proves that everybody can save a life.

Swimmers were in the surf just after the flags were taken down by Birubi Surf Life Saving Club approximately 1km west from the safe swimming zone.

Birubi Surf Life Saving Club President Helen Ratcliffe told News Of The Area, “The rescue was a real team effort, if the members of the public had not responded we would have had a very different outcome.”

Five people were taken to hospitals around the Hunter, with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter flying a 14-yearold girl and 27-year-old man to Newcastle’s John Hunter hospital.

Man, 75, died after climbing to top of Mount

A VISITOR to the Nelson Bay area died at the the top of Tomaree Head on Sunday.

The man, 75, was from Victoria and went into cardiac arrest after climbing the mountain.

The summit is 161m above sea level.

Five NSW Ambulance crews responded to calls for assistance, as well as Port Stephens police and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

It is understood that the man had died by the time paramedics and police reached the top of the headland.

Bay Pushes Vibrant Town Program

THERE’S a push for Nelson Bay to become a vibrant town.

Taree has undergone a huge transformation with Council supporting a no rules consultative approach to activities and use of footpaths in the township.

Volunteers in Taree “cleaned and greened” the streets and then retailers started to get creative on how to improve the look, feel and vibrancy of the township, Nelson Bay Businesses heard at a recent presentation.

Nelson Bay has already created a Civic Pride Committee which will work with Council and the community to create positive outcomes for an improved atmosphere and vibrancy in the township.

Paul De Szell of Taree Council said, “The program

focuses on Council facilitating not regulating and creating outcomes.”

Paul believes that every space is different so what has worked in Taree cannot be picked up and duplicated even in nearby townships.

He also credits much of the success of the program to people working together and the stopping of council fees for retailers in the streets and allowing them to create better spaces.

He credits the new vibrancy in the town centre with bringing people back into the main streets and out of shopping centres.

“Businesses experienced a 74% increase in sales over the three year trial period in Taree,” he said.

Stephen Crowe of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “It is a conversation that we need to have, it’s a great starting point to have a precedent, like

Taree, making it easier to see the risks and returns.”

Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree Business Chamber said, “We need to attract people into Nelson Bay and vibrancy at street

level will make the township more attractive.”

Faith in Anna Bay

ONE couple is working hard to change the retail trading area in Anna Bay. Locals Eliza Punton and Jeremy Scheerlinck have opened the first new business in the retail trading precinct in many years.

Eliza, who grew up in

Newcastle met Jeremy on the Gold Coast and the couple brought their family to Anna Bay for the lifestyle.

Their new restaurant Rubi Blue is a leap of faith in the Anna Bay community, for the couple who already run Infusion Cafe at Anna Bay. Jeremy Scheerlinck told News Of The Area, “It is keeping

us pretty busy and it will be a challenge to maintain Infusion Cafe through the day and cater to a higher end market at Rubi Blue through the day and night.”

He believes that Eliza’s experience as a trained chef and her love of Mediterranean food will see new options on the menu for Anna Bay locals.

The team from Rubi Blue and Infusion Cafe have also been helped out at the Anna Bay Tavern during a period where the tavern had no on site restaurant.

“Eliza will has created an exciting new menu at Rubi Blue, alongside traditional favourites of fish and chips and schnitzels the menu boasts Swan Bay Oysters, local seafood and locally sourced fruit and vegetables.

“We are also choosing to support other small businesses in the supply chain, like Anna Bay Microgreens, working together to build a better environment for business in Anna Bay.” He believes that the continued support of locals teamed with Eliza’s passion for food will see the business grow to employ even more locals.

“We currently employ five locals in the two businesses and we are looking to focus on quality food and value for money at a restaurant that offers full table service,” he said.

Rubi Blue is located in the shopping precinct adjacent to the Anna Bay Tavern.

LEAVE a message is the all too familiar response received by those seeking to call residents of Boat Harbour.

Residents in Boat Harbour are concerned that the switch to NBN will see no telecommunications available in the village area particularly in the event of a power outage.

There is also this issue of it taking longer to report accidents and incidents in the ocean.

There are many visitors to the area that stand on

the rocks and may not be aware of the risks of freak waves or be able to deal with a rescue situation.

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “It is worrying to hear that some people in Boat Harbour potentially do not have access to phone services in an emergency, this is a matter that needs to be rectified as soon as possible, and has gone on too long.”

He believes that the people of Boat Harbour deserve basic mobile phone reception.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott told News Of the Area, “The Federal Member for Patterson must put pressure on the get this service improved.

“With residents experiencing delays in service delivery when switching to the NBN they are being left without working phones in Boat Harbour homes, which could become a vital issue in an emergency,” she said.

said, “This is a ridiculous situation which Boat Harbour residents are facing, it impacts the ability of small businesses to operate in the area and endangers residents.”

There are also concerns within the community around people attending the Solace Garden at Boat Harbour and not being able to reach LifeLine which could put a vulnerable person at great risk.

Mambo Facts

Dear News Of The Area,

THE Hon Catherine Cusack MLC recently explained why her government won’t take direct action to return to public ownership, the 5.6ha part of the Mambo wetlands that was sold, ‘by mistake’, by her government.

Unfortunately the facts don’t support her assertions. The facts

are; The State government does have the legal power to acquire the land.

It can be acquired as a Nature Reserve, not a National Park.

There are many Nature Reserves in NSW, forty four have an area less than 21ha and 18 less than 6ha.

If the land needs to be compulsorily acquired the compensation payable to the owner would be the same under either a Labor or Liberal

government.

The government already has most of the funds needed to acquire the land, from the sale of the land in 2016.

So, there’s no need for the Council to get involved in returning the land to public ownership. It can be done by the Government.

Not a viable solution

Dear News Of The Area,

THE CBD at Nelson Bay is almost dead during the low season then why start building high rises when there is no people coming during that period and where do you propose people parking? It will be as we witnessed recently, they were parking all over the street.

It is not a viable

solution look at the Gold Coast, more crime and substance. At least we have here the most calming effect and no pollution so to speak.

I think it would be better for the Council to fix the potholes appearing, one example is the large one at Donald Street. It was not a very good idea just to spread bitumen without doing the cementing first.

It is an accident waiting

to happen soon and guess who is going to pay.

The CBD is dead only because the rent is high and if you have to pay say $160,000 for a sho for one year you might as well pay it for a house. I rest my case the rent is the back breaker there is no management skills whatsoever in the CBD. Olivia Snell

More people before more infrastructure?

I can only conclude that support for high rise in Nelson Bay can only come from people who don’t live or visit Nelson Bay during holiday times.

It must be obvious from the last few weeks

that improved infrastructure is needed before any more visitors are attracted.

Maybe our councillors are early risers that do everything before 8am …ie .Go for a coffee, use a boat ramp (just chaotic), avoid colliding with a jet ski, park in Shoal Bay or Nelson Bay

Mrs CV, as I am typing this, I’m polishing off the last of the hazelnut nougat I was given for Christmas, even though I promised myself I would stick to salads and green smoothies for the next six months in order to make up for the communal gluttony that occurred at my place over the festive season.

It is now all a blur of deep-fried camembert, basil and pistachio dip, potato salad with full cream mayonnaise, chocolate mousse, rum balls, red wine, white wine, brunch, lunch and midnight snacks (and that was just Boxing Day).

We all fall into a trap at this time of year, and that trap is thinking that we will pace ourselves over the Christmas period, eat in moderation, exercise, and start the New Year as svelte, radiant, well-rested individuals.

Instead we fall into a food coma and we can’t exercise because even our stretchy activewear isn’t quite that stretchy and we all know that crop tops and muffin tops aren’t a fashion statement any of us would like to emulate.

The most exercise we have done is to float around on blow-up peacocks and pull a couple of Bon Bons.

Heck, even if I could see my shoelaces, I doubt I’d have the energy to actually tie them up. All this eating and nanna napping is exhausting.

Acceptance is the first step, Mrs CV. There’s no point feeling bad about it.

You simply have to let go of the past and embrace the future.

It seems pointless to change things mid-week, so as of next Monday, I want you to ask yourself this question each time you come across a tempting treat: “Should I put this inside me?” Nine times out of ten, the answer will be no. In fact, the question could extend beyond food and keep you away from doomed relationships and emergency rooms. Food for thought.

I PICKED up a copy of this paper in a local Nelson Bay store and probably would not be contributing a letter if it wasn’t for John Ballantyne’s art opinion (28.12.17) about Council’s disregard of what residents actually want in their community. How true.

I do not live here and have not visited Nelson Bay for quite some time however one of my very fond memories since very young was always the assurance of seeing happy resident Dolphins frolicking

in a beautiful Bay. This being a major reason to return with my young family over Xmas.

Unfortunately ‘disgust’ can be the only way I could describe my Dolphin encounter this holiday.

Jet-skis have taken over a once tranquil Bay and turned it into a race track.

If I wanted to visit Luna Park I would have stayed in Sydney.

Dolphins providing amusement while trying to escape continual harassment by these supremely fast machines is not my idea of

entertainment. No wonder they are moving out.

Is this what responsible residents want? Jet skis and high rise?

I was shocked and cannot believe your Council desires this to happen when Dolphins add so much to your area and economy where Jet-skis contribute nothing.

Definitely not as how I remember.

WITH the cicada season in full swing, the familiar sound of the summer symphony is echoing around the region once again.

And if you think the little noise makers are much louder than usual this year you are not alone, with experts deeming the bumper season the largest since 2013.

Seven-year-old Zackery Moran said the unrelenting wave of singing in the local area is deafening.

“The chirping starts before the sun comes up and goes most of the day and into the night,” he said.

“It’s so loud sometimes that it hurts my ears.”

News Of The Area recently recorded the insects humming at sound levels well over 100 decibels at homes near Bulahdelah’s

Alum Mountain.

According to cicada enthusiast Dr Nathan Emery, who is a Scientific Officer at the Australian Botanic Gardens, this level is equivalent to the sound of a chainsaw running at full speed or a rock concert.

“The males often sing in synchrony, termed a cicada chorus and this can get up to around 120 decibels,” he said.

“With prolonged exposure, this is enough to damage human hearing.”

Dr Emery said the most commonly found species in the Myall Coast and Port Stephens region include the Eastern Double Drummer, Black Prince, Red Tree-ticker, Cherrynose and Yellowbelly, which have all come out in large numbers this season.

“The ones making the loudest noise are the Eastern Double Drummers, which are also Australia’s largest cicada

Stephen and his team raised almost $500,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

“It was a great effort. I had some fantastic support from people in Port Stephens, including the Mayor and General Manager.”

In undertaking a climb like the one to Everest there are physical and mental challenges to overcome, for Stephen, there were also life lessons learned.

“Life is much more beautiful without email, phones and social media.

“Our ability to live in the moment was so much more enhanced in an environment without those distractions,” he said.

When asked if he would encourage others to undertake physical challenges like his Everest climb the answer was a definitive “YES.”

Holiday Fun Around the Bay

WITH the school holidays more than half way through the challenge to find things to do that are different exciting and even educational.

There are some fantastic programs being run around the Bay these holidays as well as things that you can fly solo on with the family.

Tomaree Community Library has a program on these holidays with The University of Newcastle’s SMART Program Little Bangs a showing of the movie Paws, and even karate and yoga classes.

The Summer Coastal Activities program with the

Garoowa Coastal Sea Country Talk at Birubi Point, and Soldiers Point as well as guided Rockpool Rambles and a guided snorkel at Fly Point.

There’s plenty of free entertainment at Nelson Bay and surrounds including the Gone Troppo Festival at Murrays Brewery with free entertainment, it’s a place where you can relax and the kids can check out the free App and play in the wide open spaces.

It wouldn’t be summer if you didn’t check Port Stephens 26 amazing beaches.

At Birubi Beach you can hire sandboards at the local service station and slide down the dunes.

There are so many great walks in and around the Bay, stroll along the foreshore at

Shoal Bay to the park at the end of Tomaree Headland, or hike up to the inner light at Nelson Head, check out the boardwalks at Barry Park and Tanilba Bay, or simply find a spot at one of the beautiful parks and enjoy a picnic with a game of backyard cricket or Frisbee.

Grad a spear or rod and reel and a fishing licence, check the Marine Park zones and drop a line in.

Popular spots for fishing include the break wall at Nelson Bay and near the boat ramp at Little Beach, Shoal Bay, or the gutters at Fingal Beach where the whiting are reported to be biting.

PRESENTATION OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS In accordance with Section 418(3) of the Local Government Act, 1993 Council advises that the Extra Ordinary Meeting to be held on Wednesday 24 January 2018 at the Council Chambers, Breese Parade, Forster will include the presentation of the audited Financial Statements and the Auditors Reports for the Financial Period ending 30 June 2017.

Bay Coach for Blackjacks

NEW Zealand’s Blackjacks Assistant Coach for bowls Richard Girvan is a fixture at Nelson Bay Bowling Club.

Richard like many Kiwi’s chose to make Australia home and made the move in 1999 for the Premier League.

He subsequently moved to the Bay in 2009 and is the clubs Bowls Development Manager who looks after the bowling program and coaches members.

From 2005-2015 Richard was a part of the New Zealand Blackjacks, he played 234 games for the New Zealand team, including playing at three Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, India and Melbourne and two World Championships.

In 2008 Richard was one of the four players that took out the Gold Medal for the World Four’s Championship in Christchurch.

As Assistant coach of the Blackjacks Richard is working with seven members of the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team

Richard Girvan told News Of The Area, “I think the social aspect of the game makes it perfect for a community like the Bay, it’s a great way to meet people, and you can relax with a beer and enjoy some company while playing a game.”

He believes that the casual mufti and barefoot bowls days have made bowls more interesting for more people and encourages everyone of any age to give it a go.

“We have two ladies that conduct an introduction to bowls on Saturday mornings and if people are interested in getting involved and joining up they then have the opportunity to be coached by me.”

“Lawn bowls is accessible, inclusive and a great social game that players can take on without a huge outlay on equipment, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a go” he said.
