Marine Rescue: Saving Lives this Summer

By Mandy ELLIS MARINE Rescue Port Stephens (MRPS) volunteers do their jobs professionally and save lives on the water.

With its sophisticated equipment and ideal location, Port Stephens LAC intend using this facility as an Emergency Operations Centre for emergencies and natural disasters in Port Stephens.

The radio base is operated 24 hours per day, 365 days per year by qualified Watchkeepers and Marine Radio Operators.

It is an accredited Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (SARCC) and from 5pm to 9am the radio base receives community first responder calls from triple zero.

The dedicated and well trained group are looking for new volunteers. irrespective of age or

Be Prepared for Bushfires A WET winter and good spring growth means a higherthan-average bushfire threat this summer, with hot and dry conditions forecast for the coming months.

This advice, from local Rural Fire Brigade, will help residents and tourists to be prepared.

Medowie Rural Fire Brigade Captain Andrew Collins said, “Now is the time residents should be inspecting and preparing their homes and properties, then follow up again after Christmas.

“Also think about what you’re going to do with your pets and what to do if you’re travelling.”

The following list should be part of your plan: When will we leave?

What will be your sign to leave? It could be smoke in your area, or as soon as you find out there’s a fire near you.

Where will we go?

Where’s a meeting place that’s safe and away from a fire area? It might be a friend or relative’s place, or even a shopping centre.

How will we get there?

What road will you take?

What’s your backup plan in case the road is blocked?

What will we take? Make a list of what you’ll take in the event of a fire. Remember to include pets, identification

and irreplaceable items such as photos or documents.

Who will we call? There should be someone we can call to let them know we’re leaving and that we’ve got there safely.

What is our backup plan? What if things don’t go to plan? Identify a safer location nearby such as a neighbour’s home that is well prepared, or a place of last resort.

If you decide to stay be sure you are well prepared by asking the following questions: ■ Are we putting anyone in our family at risk by staying? For example children, the elderly, or people with asthma.

■ Will we cope in an emergency situation? In a fire, it will be physically and mentally draining.

■ Do we have all the equipment we need? Go through all the items on the RFS Decide to Stay checklist and see what’s missing. Make a commitment to get all equipment by a specific date.

■ When there is a fire, what is our sign to start defending our home? It could be as soon as you find out there’s a fire near you.

Country comes to the Coast

By Jewell DRURY NELSON Bay and Port Stephens will host the 2017 Bluewater Country Music Festival on the June long weekend, Friday June 9 to Monday June 12, with a brand new and exciting format.

The 2017 festival will see a range of Country Music Cruises heading out and around Port Stephens, cruising to Karuah, Tea Gardens and over to Lemon Tree Passage.

This type of entertainment, featuring “live” onboard Country Music artists and bands, will add a unique dimension to the Festival as well as showcasing our beautiful Blue Water Wonderland.

The Festival will also be extended to a full four days and will include all forms of Country Music including traditional, bluegrass, and balladeering.

Bush Poets will also complement the extensive array of country music.

The Festival, which commenced in 2006, promises again to feature unique and exciting new gigs at over 20 venues including a “Progressive Country Music Luncheon Cruise” on the beautiful and exotic Port Stephens waterway.

Jags Prowling Port Stephens

By Jewell DRURY EVERY year the members of the Australian Council of Jaguar Clubs come together for the Jaguar National Rally.

Hosted by the Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia and supported by the Jaguar Drivers Club Hunter Region, March 24 - March 27, 2017 will see the Jaguar National 48th Rally take place and it promises to be not just a car show but a huge community event.

Ken White, a Nelson Bay Resident, is the Director of the event and is excited to announce that this year’s rally will be right here in Shoal Bay. “The Ramada Resort will be rally headquarters and the theme will be ‘Jags Prowling Port Stephens’ with an estimated 300 Jaguarphiles and their magnificent cars attending,” Ken White told Bay News Of The Area.

Held over four days from Friday to Monday, and followed by the Post Rally Tour from Port Stephens to Port Macquarie, the Rally promises to be an event that you do not want to miss.

Friday night kicks off the festivities with a cocktail party at the Ramada promising to set the tone for the following four days.

“150 Jaguars are already registered with more Jags expected to arrive on Saturday morning for a huge Jaguar exhibition,” Mr White said.

Port Stephens 100.9 FM are presenting the Jaguar exhibition which will take place at Fly Point, with more than 200 Jags including specialised Jaguars, brand new Jaguars and Jaguars from the late 30s on display.

There will be a concourse judgment at the end of the day’s event.

Saturday night will see a dinner cruise on our beautiful bay on the Moonshadow.

participate in the sporting part of the event beginning at Atalia Rd, Ringwood.

Thirty to 40 cars will then partake in a Hill Climb Rally.

An alternate event will see a coach taking registered members for a tour to Maitland Gaol and then back to Murray’s Brewery for a social afternoon.

Sunday night will be presentation night back at The Ramada with arguably Australia’s most travelled woman, Catriona Rowntree, as special guest speaker.

Catriona’s mother and father, Heather and Stephen, well respected members of the Jaguar Drivers Club of Australia, were the owners of a 1966 S-Type and 1968 420G. After Stephen’s passing, Catriona and her brother inherited the cars.

Catriona will bring insights of growing up in such a dedicated Jaguar family.

Monday will see a pleasant social brunch with a venue to be announced at a later date.

‘Tis the Season for Jobs

ACCORDING to statistics recorded on the “Trading Economics” website, Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose from 5.6 to 5.7 percent in November 2016.

It was the highest jobless rate since August as the economy added 39,100 jobs while the number of unemployed increased by 17,000.

Here on the Tomaree Peninsula during the holiday season, however, locals are flooded with job opportunities.

Numerous Facebook sites are being updated hourly with positions vacant that include Assistants in Nursing, casual food and beverage attendants, cleaners, kitchen hands, wait staff, junior sales assistants, hairdressers, mystery shoppers, security staff, baristas, house maids and pizza delivery drivers.

Business owners are in need of good and reliable workers due to the huge influx of visitors into the Bay.

“At present we have a position available as a Security Guard with our company, Australian and Concert and Entertainment Security,” Ryan Parke, Security Supervisor, told Bay News Of The Area.

“We currently employ one parttime, two casual staff and a full-time staff member,” Mr Parke said.

Port Stephens Council has several employment opportunities available ranging from Senior Community and Recreation Planning Officer through to a Customer Service Officer.

Growing Together THE end of term at Tomaree High School saw the opening of the Growing Together Indigenous Garden.

The project was carried out in collaboration with the Real Futures Foundation, a local charitable body that works with the two local high schools – Tomaree and St Philip’s.

Students and staff involved in the programme at Tomaree High School worked tirelessly to create

a garden in an area in the grounds that wasn’t being utilised.

It comprises a traditional fire pit, a curved two-tiered seating area and a brick built barbecue shelter, as well as landscaping.

The Real Futures Foundation was first established in 2003 and works with Year 10 students.

Its aim is to encourage those students to stay in education or to provide pathways to employment, working in conjunction with local businesses.

Behind the public persona

By Jewell DRURY RYAN Palmer has been working tirelessly for Nelson Bay over the past several years.

He has a huge public profile and News Of The Area had the opportunity to sit down with Ryan to find out more about the man behind the public persona.

Ryan Palmer’s Grandfather, Philip Palmer, owns the Santa Catalina Motel at Shoal Bay. Attending St Michael’s Primary School in Nelson Bay, Ryan then went to San Clemente and St Francis Xavier High Schools in Newcastle.

“My Mum Kim did an amazing job as a single parent, raising my siblings and I,” Ryan Palmer told Bay News Of The Area.

At the age of seven, Ryan began playing tennis at Nelson Bay Tennis Club following in the footsteps of his grandfather.

When he was ten years old he was training every day of the week and playing tournaments on the weekend.

At fifteen years old, Ryan was given the opportunity to move to Texas in the US to train at John Newcombe’s Tennis Ranch.

Over the next four years he travelled the world on the World Junior Tennis Tour and then ultimately the ATP Tour.

He spent time playing in Mexico, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, USA, Indonesia and Guatemala.

When Ryan returned home he took some time away from the tennis court to relax

and recharge and met up with his now wife Jessica.

Jessica and Ryan later married in 2009 and now have two beautiful children, Bella, five, and Knox, two.

“I like nothing more than spending time with my kids or finding the time to have a beer with my Pa or catching up with any of our family or friends,” Mr Palmer said.

My in-laws came over for Christmas lunch and they are still here! How do I get rid of them?

Mr GJ, Nelson Bay OH, GJ, I feel your pain. It’s the coastal factor. Have you seen holiday rental prices in the Bay? I once had a visitor who hung around the house for two years. I ended up marrying him for a host of reasons that may or may not have included lust, tax benefits and mechanical aptitude. But enough of that, let’s get to the task at hand. You don’t have in-laws visiting, you have outlaws intruding. When you give something its correct title, it is easier to navigate.

Christmas lunch? That is so last year. I do not mean that in a rhetorical sense, my dear man. According to the Chinese Zodiac, which is as good a place as any to gain insight, 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. Now, I’m not sure you’ve spent much time with roosters, but thankfully I have. It is the rooster that you need to start impersonating if you want your ‘guests’ to leave.

Crow from the time the sun rises. Crow about any old thing. Poke your chest out and do it loudly and proudly.

Screech about the old-person underwear hanging on your shower rail. Cock-a-doodle-do about the mounting food bill. Squawk about the cricket that’s been on 24/7.

Keep at it, GJ, and those outlaws will get the message and waddle out of your lounge room and back down the expressway.

Then things will be back to normal. Just you and your wife and the usual hen-pecking.

POPULAR daytime presenter Paddy Twohill has been overwhelmingly elected by members as President of the area’s only community radio station, 100.9 PSFM.

Retiring President Mr George Anderson acknowledged Mr Twohill as an excellent choice to take on the role for the next 12 months.

DESPITE recent statistics on industry.nsw.gov.au showing that only 34 percent of business owners are women, that number is set to climb steadily over the next decade.

Women are becoming more confident in traditionally maledominated roles, as society pushes for gender equity and fair treatment for men and women in all positions, and all industries.

Now, one in four startup businesses are launched by women, whereas in 2011, the number was only one in six.

It is important for women to feel empowered, and confident to take on these roles, and to believe themselves to be equal to male business owners.

One female business owner from Salamander Bay is doing her fair share to make sure the confidence of local businesswomen is of a high standard.

Bay, recently ran a shopping night at her store, as a way to thank loyal customers and to give other businesses some limelight for the evening.

Melinda reached out to other small businesses to showcase their wares at the collaborative event, and invited her loyal customers and their friends to join them for a unique shopping event.

Melinda told News Of The Area, “I prefer to shop at small local businesses myself and to stand out from the crowd.”

“We need to offer more and be a point of difference among the big guys; excellent service, free gift wrapping, special orders and product knowledge are a must.”

“I believe that if we shop at small local stores, more money is put back into the local community and that is super important for every small business to stand out from the big corporate companies,” she said.

A wonderful night was had by all in attendance, and there is talk on the grapevine of a repeat event being held again soon.

By Jewell DRURY AS we enter 2017, it is good to look back over 2016 and the many people we lost throughout its year, those whose names have become a part of our lives and memories.

would like to pay tribute by acknowledging some of these greats.

David Bowie, who broke pop and rock boundaries with his amazing music which spanned six decades, died January 10, 2016 at the age of 69 years.

Rene Angelil, Celine

Dion’s husband and Manager, who moulded her into one of the world’s successful entertainers, died January 14, 2016 at the age of 73.

Alan Rickman, the British Stage and film star, best known as the screen villain in Harry Potter, died January 12, 2016 at the age of 69.

Dan Haggerty, best known for his role as “Grizzly Adams”, died on January 15, 2016 at the age of 74.

Glenn Frey from the Eagles, died on January 18, 2016 at the age of 67.

Patty Duke, famous for “The Patty Duke Show” died March 29, 2016 at the age of 69.

Prince, one of the most inventive and influential musicians of modern times, died April 21, 2016 at the age of 57.

Muhammed Ali, the silver-tongued boxer who proclaimed himself as “The Greatest” died on June 3, 2016 at the age of 74.

Dog dies at Pet Resort

THERE were golf hits over or between large mature trees. Others were through or around clumps of bushes.

Even some of the kangaroos were standing, watching and scratching their heads thinking, ‘What’s going on here?’

The Twilight Golf SeriesCross Country event was played on Thursday 22nd December.

The event stretched the imagination of most of the players as they were required to play shots that would have tested the shot-making skills of a Bubba Watson or a Lydia Ko. A 10-hole course was designed using, in some cases, existing tees and greens. In others, tees and

greens were specially created for the event. A total of 52 players took on the challenge in a Teams, Ambrose format.

Much discussion was promoted within the Teams as to whether it was better to punch a low shot under the branches, to create a draw-shot around the tree-line or just to blast a shot over the tops of the trees.

The essence of the game encouraged the social aspects and to not take too seriously the finer points.

Playing in the relative coolness of the early evening meant that everyone was able to relax and have fun with friends. Much discussion centred on the imagination of the Vice-Captain David Flatt, who had visualised the concept and designed the

THE family of Baron the greyhound have had their Christmas holiday come to a tragic end, with their beloved pet found dead at Jane’s Pet Resort in Fern Bay. Nathan Wilson and his partner Dean Compton arrived at the Pet Resort to collect their two dogs, Baron and Charlotte, a day early from their holiday.

A staff member returned moments later after going to collect the animals, telling Dean and Nathan, ‘your dog

Debbie Reynolds, the actress who rose to fame with Gene Kelly in “Singing in the Rain” died Dec 28, 2016 at the age of 84, one day after the death of her daughter Carrie Fisher. is dead’, in front of one of their two sons.

Staff at Jane’s Pet Resort told the family that they had checked on the dogs not more than fifteen minutes prior to collection, but, according to Nathan, a local vet examined Baron’s body and confirmed that he had been dead for a number of hours.

The veterinarian reported to the family that Baron, a three-year-old rescue Greyhound, had died as a result of heatstroke and dehydration.

The surviving family dog, Charlotte, collapsed a short time later, and has also now been treated for heatstroke

Stigma creates barrier to help

Al-Anon Family Groups is a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope with each other.

Family, friends and work colleagues can all be affected and by attending

Owner Nathan told News Of The Area, “We are just so distraught that we trusted this business with our babies, and they have dealt with the matter so poorly.”

“Baron, we are so sorry that we trusted these people to look after you, and that they failed you so badly.”

“We will make sure we fight for you and will do our best to ensure no other family has to experience something so devastating,” he said.

The RSPCA has been contacted by the family, and an official complaint has been made.

The RSPCA attended the boarding kennel on Thursday and have opened an investigation and collected Baron’s body for an official autopsy.

News Of The Area will follow up with the RSPCA on the outcome of this tragic situation, and will keep in touch with Nathan and his family as they fight for answers.

The owners of Jane’s Pet Resort have been contacted for comment, but have yet to respond.

Local Star martial arts students LIKE US

IMUGI Taekwondo recognised a community need for Martial Arts for adults and children with special needs.

Imugi was approached by Endeavour Group Australia from Nelson Bay and began running weekly classes for their disabled adult clients.

A few months later, after discussions with many local parents, the decision was made to open up to children and adults with special needs beyond Endeavour.

Kyo Sa Nim Kelly O’Brien began taking one-on-one martial arts students with a variety of special needs and disabilities. They have become known as the Star Imugi’s and students from Endeavour Group have become known as the Endeavour Imugi’s.

Kelly told News Of The Area, “We had a few children come into our mainstream class with special learning needs, so after chatting with their parents and with a local Parents of Special Needs community group, Star Imugi’s were born.”

“This way we can offer them the same training, but delivered in a way that best suits their needs.”

“I see no reason why they should

miss out just because they need a different style of teaching,” she said.

The Star Imugi positions are limited and with a high demand they filled within the first week. Their ages range from five to 19 with disabilities including Down Syndrome, Autism, Irlen Syndrome and significant learning delays.

They are given the same tuition as the mainstream Imugi Taekwondo students and are included in the combined events, but taught individually so they can achieve to their maximum learning ability.

Kelly reported that the students and teachers working together with the star Imugi’s have formed a beautiful bond, and that they love watching them achieve things that they never thought were possible.

“We have also developed a close relationship with each of their families and carers, which has enabled the Star & Endeavour Imugi’s to feel comfortable and safe in their Dojang,” Kelly said.

Imugi Taekwondo strongly believes that each martial artist’s journey is unique and that no matter what your challenge, martial arts offers a strong basis for a balanced life.
