The turnout for the Nelson Bay ANZAC Day commemorations was strong despite rain for the Dawn Service.

The Nelson Bay ceremony paid tribute to the centenary of the ending of World War I, where the traditions and spirit of ANZAC Day were born, on the rocky shores of Gallipoli, and on the fields of Flanders.

Nelson Bay RSL SubBranch Vice President Tom Lupton in his moving address, paid tribute to all who have served our nation in times of war on distant shores.

Not only in the great wars of Europe, but in Korea, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam, to Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

“It is very pleasing to see so many people waving, clapping and shouting their support as we march down Stockton St to Apex Park.

“Students from all the local schools participated in the March along with the 1st Anna Bay Scouts and Nelson Bay Girl Guides.

“It was great to see so many children participating.

The main Service was well supported with many people on the overhead walkway and right up the Park towards Laman St. “RAAF Williamtown supplied the Catafalque Party and 335 SQDN Australian Air Force Cadets acted as Flag Bearers and Flag Orderlies, with Charlotte O’Donnell and Isabella Rawlings from

Tomaree Public School reciting the two verses of the ODE,” he said.

The Seaside Singers Community Choir sang both the Australian and New Zealand national Anthems with the New Zealand Anthem sung in both English and Maori.

Councillor Jaimie Abbott who served in Afganistan, said, “ANZAC day is a time to reflect on the hardships of the past and more importantly it’s a chance to remember those who have sacrificed their lives.

“For the past 11 years, I have been a member of the Royal Australian Air Force Reserves.

“I spent 6 months in Afghanistan in 2011,

participating in local dawn services each year makes me feel proud of the small contribution I have made and thankful of the sacrifices many others have made,” she said.

Schools, and the community of the Bay, once again came together to show their respect for those who have and do serve our nation, the ANZAC spirit in the Bay is strong.

It is heartening to see that the mateship of those who founded the tradition carried on and recognised, it contributed largely to who we are as Australians and who we have become as a nation.

A Stitch In Time

EVERY two years the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s Quilting Group holds a Quilting Exhibition.

This April will see the 17th Exhibition of the Group’s works from 12 April til 22 May. The official opening will take place at 11am on 12 April.

Visitors are invited to join members of the Arts Centre to enjoy a delicious morning tea, your $5 donation per person will go towards the sustainability of the Community Arts Centre.

The entire Gallery will be transformed into a Quilting paradise filled with spectacular handmade master pieces often taking a year to complete.

A variety of techniques will be on display, showing on how the quilts are made some by hand others by machine.

The Centre invites everyone to come in and enjoy the colour therapy, and brighten your day.

The quilters will be displaying their work that featured in the ‘Flying Geese Challenge’.

Quilting Group Leaders, Margaret Polack and Lyn Cummings told News Of The Area, “Our Groups never use up their creativity the more we use

the more creative we become”.

There are three patchwork groups that meet at the centre from 10am to 1pm.

The Tuesday and Thursday groups meet weekly and Saturday group (Loose Threads) meets on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturdays.

These groups are not teaching groups, but there is always someone to give advice or just have a chat and coffee with.

There are also small workshops held within each group and several times a year there are combined workshops with visiting tutors on offer for those interested in quilting.

Members are able to attend all groups, or just one.

New members are always welcome.

The Patchwork group has a saying ‘Good friends are like quilts they age with you yet never lose their warmth nor inspiration.’

The Exhibition is being held at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre Cultural Place Nelson Bay. The Gallery is open from 10am until 4pm daily.

Defibrillators for Port Stephens Clubs

PORT Stephens sporting clubs are headed towards a safer future, with the announcement of funding that will ensure nineteen more clubs across Port Stephens will soon have adequate access to a defibrillator in the event of an emergency.

On 10 February 2018, a local cricket player collapsed during a game at Lakeside Sporting Complex, Raymond Terrace, having suffered a heart attack.

The sports ground did not have a defibrillator, and had to request the assistance of a lifeguard at the nearby Lakeside Leisure Centre.

Five days later, West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott put forward a notice of motion for all Councillors to support the pooling of funds from Council and Ward funds to purchase a number of defibrillators to put across sporting centres in Port Stephens to ensure that future lives can be saved if needed.

The motion was wholeheartedly supported by Councillors across the board, and the project was given a much needed cash boost this week with the announcement that the NSW Premier, The Hon Gladys Berejiklian MP, has provided $4,400 in funding to Port Stephens Council to co-fund the purchase of four defibrillators for sports grounds across the Port

Stephens LGA. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC, representing the Premier, met with Mayor Ryan Palmer and Cr Ken Jordan this week to announce the news.

“Port Stephens Council will fund 50% of the cost in conjunction with the NSW Government and I thank Cr Ken Jordan’s advocacy and the Council staff for their prompt action following the incident at Lakeside Sports Complex,” Mr MacDonald said.

Mayor Ryan Palmer said the support was indicative of a strong and productive working relationship between Port Stephens Council and the NSW Government.

Fran Wathen accepted the role of Probus Ambassador late last year and she sees herself as a promoter and representative of the concept of Probus and how it benefits and enhances the lives of members by not only providing fellowship, friendship and fun through the many activities that are on offer, but how it gives to members through exclusive discounts, special offers, and very good Travel Insurance plans.

Fran was also influenced by her own experience with Probus.

When she retired after a long and happy working life, she had concerns about how she would “fill her days”.

When a friend introduced Fran to her local Probus Club her retirement became a new beginning and not the ending that she had first envisaged and even dreaded.

Fran Wathen told News Of The Area, “Leaving Sydney to come to live in Port Stephens saw further association with Probus through the Port Stephens Probus Club.”

She believes that she has benefited from 15 years of a life full of new friendships, fun and laughter, participation in many outings and activities, and the genuine fellowship shown by members and other Probus Clubs.

ALL mothers need spoiling, and we have the place for you this mother’s day weekend.

Johnny Cash and Elvis will take the stage on Friday 11 May at 7:30pm in a show not to be missed.

Andrew Leonard from ‘Lemvis’ has been performing as Elvis for almost 14 years and Johnny Cash for 12.

He also performs as Dean Martin in “The Rat Bags” show.

It all began back in 2004 after he won a local karaoke competition with his Elvis style rendition of “My Way”.

Then the big twist of fate when, a week later, he overheard a call on 2CA Canberra radio asking for someone to volunteer as an Elvis impersonator for a Fireman’s ball.

Impulsively he made the call, got the gig and made his Elvis debut in front of over 500 people at Canberra’s iconic Albert Hall.

The crowd went nuts wanting more and Lemvis was born.

His Mother made him up a jumpsuit and the rest is history.

Since then Lemvis has performed 1000s of shows of all different kinds.

Andrew takes each show as it comes and no matter how big or small it really does not matter.

He says “it’s all about giving your best, entertaining and interacting with the people, putting a smile on a face, making someone feel special, touching hearts, creating new Elvis fans but most importantly paying tribute to the greatest entertainer the world has seen and will.

Lemvis has come a long way since 2004 and is now entertaining full time.

His Mums jumpsuits have

been replaced with replica’s made in the USA, his voice has matured and the passion is there more than ever.

Andrew told News Of The Area, “I am really looking forward to coming to Hawks Nest.”

“It looks like a beautiful part of the country and I can’t wait to rock it with the locals, and it will be the Mother’s Day weekend so bring Mum along and walk the line with me.”

Remembering Animals in War

THIS week we feature former RAAF member and now Medowie local, Mr Ian Fletcher who served 16 years in the Australian Defence Force from 1979 to 1995.

Last week, Mr Fletcher laid a wreath to honour animals in war, specifically the work of military dogs.

News Of The Area spoke with Mr Fletcher to hear about his experiences.

On the topic of RAAF dogs, Mr Fletcher said, “They are not just issued equipment, they are a formidable part of the team.”

“As handlers we spent more time with our dogs than we did with our family.”

“We put our trust in their hands, rather paws, as they put their lives and trust in us.”

“It is a unique bond between handler and dog, a bond that can never be broken nor trust ever questioned.”

“I believe that all animals of all conflicts should be remembered for their part as they all have, and continue to play an integral part in our military operations.”

The purple poppy, an addition to the traditional red poppy commonly worn on Remembrance Day, commemorates animals who have served and died in conflict zones.

Many animals are used for war service, such as horses, pigeon, camels, donkeys and arguably the most loyal of all, dogs.

Mr Fletcher explains his respect for man’s (and, woman’s) best friend saying, “I joined the RAAF in 1979 and went on to be a RAAF Security Guard and Police Dog Handler.”

“There were a number of name changes over the time including RAAF Police Dog Handler, before the ADF settled on the current name of Military Working Dogs.”

“Our role was to provide security, emergency response, and intruder detection on RAAF Bases protecting aircraft and

military assets whilst also being deployed around the world.”

“These days the dogs are sent overseas and are able to return.”

“During my time and earlier times, due to quarantine laws our dogs were not returned home, so we often deployed overseas without the dog.”

“To me, Anzac Day is more than just remembering my family, Great Uncle, Grandfather WWI, my Uncle who was a POW

Sandakan, and my father who served RAAF Special Wireless Unit, Central Bureau of Intelligence, it is also about remembering those who have made sacrifices and of course, those of our brothers and sisters that continue to serve.”

By Marian SAMPSON THERE’S three young ladies who are proud of their recent achievements at the Champion of Champions Dance Tournament that was held recently at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre.

The Highland Dancers

who train with Nance McLennan at Bayside Thistle (Scottish) Highland Dance School all won medals at the biannual event.

The students all study Highland Dance at Corlette in the Bay. Nance isn’t your everyday dance instructor she is a sprightly octogenarian who

has been involved in teaching Scottish Highland Dance for 60 plus years, and she still teaches classes locally in Corlette.

Maryann Royes told News Of The Area, “My daughter Genevieve has been dancing with Nance for two years, and she is the sweetest, gentlest, caring teacher who makes

learning fun, and it’s a great environment that the girls are in.”

Nance herself holds medals for her dancing and still dances with her students.

The dancers from Bayside Thistle Highland Dance have been participating at Clans On The Coast the Bay’s own Scottish Festival that is

held on the first weekend of September annually, and they plan to be back dancing at the festival once again in September 2018.

The dancers from the studio also showcased their Highland Dancing at the St Philip’s Christian College Founders Fair early in April.
