trick fooled them.

“I was surprised. The trick is a variation of something that is wellknown but I did develop a twist myself. I can’t tell you how many cook-

ies I ate sitting on the couch at home working on that trick,” Nick laughed.

Peach Kings: Under new management In the hockey world, players change hands on an almost daily basis, but it is not every day ownership of a hockey club changes hands.

Last week, the new ownership group of the Grimsby Peach Kings

Jr. C hockey club formally introduced themselves.

The group consists of Doug Reynolds, Richard Startek, Simon Duong, Scott Cundell, Ryan Christie, Matt Giffen, Curtis Fielding, Jason Jacobs and Andrew Leistner.

Key to the whole changeover, said new Peach King president Simon Duong, is that the on-ice team and support system will change very little, including longtime, popular coach Dave Brownridge behind the bench.

Dan Nielson, who was part of the previous ownership group with Brownridge and Don Kilgallen, will also stay on as general manager taking care of team management and scheduling.

CCWN/Lions gear up for Sept. 22 food drive

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow The Beamsville and District Lions Club Food Drive is set for Saturday, Sept. 22 and it can’t come fast enough for Community Care of West Niagara.

The summer has been a drain on much needed supplies and the 29th annual food drive will restock shelves and help CCWN meet the needs for so many people in the community.

The annual food drive brings the community together in a busy and fun-filled day and there are many who will be grateful for the generosity of their neighbours.

“The food drive really doesn’t come soon enough with so many needs for families and their children now heading back to school,” said Lynda O’Donnell, CCWN Administration and Fundraising Coordinator. “We’re so grateful for the help from the community.”

It’s the largest food drive in the area and the community working together helps CCWN to meet the continuous challenge and ensure that no one goes without the basic necessities.

“We are hoping to

collect 30,000 pounds of food which will give us a bump of about 40,000 meals for the clients we serve in Lincoln,” said Carole Fuhrer, CCWN executive director.

O’Donnell said it’s a fun day for the community, to feel part of something bigger and to help their neighbours. “If everybody pitches in a little it will be great.” Families, church groups, service organizations and businesses are all encouraged to meet up and work together.

The call is out for 150 plus volunteers to help collect, unload and sort food that day. Volunteers must fill out a form to participate. The forms can be completed online or downloaded and returned to the CCWN office at 4309 Central Ave., in Beamsville. Sign up early to be able to state your preference for a volunteer position for the day.

The Lions organize road crews to pick up donations from the doorsteps across Lincoln and bring it back to sort, weigh and take to the CCWN warehouse. On the day of the drive, volunteers are asked to meet at the Lincoln Community Centre at 8 a.m.

Opening remarks are scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

The Centre is located at 4361 Central Ave., Beamsville.

Residents are asked to put the non-perishable donations outside their front doors by 8 a.m. and ensure they are clearly visible for volunteer pick up.

O’Donnell said CCWN is grateful for the work done by the Lions.

“This year’s food drive chair John Tutecky is taking over the work done by Peter Willetts who chaired the annual

drive for the past five years.”

“The Lions are fabulous. They support us in many ways throughout the year and the food drive is extremely important in filling the shelves,” Lynda said.

“The Lions have been doing this for the past 29 years. Each year they organize the road crews to go out and pick up the non-perishable items from across all of Lincoln, including Jordan, Jordan Station, Vineland and Beamsville,” O’Donnell said.

Community Care needs a variety of nonperishable items, food, cleaning products, toiletries. Also there’s a gentle reminder to check the best before dates of the food you are donating to the drive.

The shelves are bare of many items items and the list is long with a need for canned meats, fish and stews, chili and chunky soups, cereals, crackers, peanut-free lunch snacks, cans of fruit and fruit snacks, jams, peanut

butter, pancake mix, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, Boost, flour, sugar, brown sugar, cake and muffin mixes, tketchup, mustard, may salad dressings, olive oil, toilet paper, paper towels, soaps and cleaning supplies, shampoo and deodorant. CCWN has already been blessed with an abundance of pasta and pasta sauce, so those are not priority items at this time.

“We have people who support us all year, but this is our one big push to fill our warehouse and help fill the food room shelves through the year,” O’Donnell said, adding the push is on to surpass the 26,000 pounds of food collected during last year’s drive.

“We’re touching the lives of so many people and help them to have food on the table while they pay for housing and living costs,” O’Donnell said.

“Volunteers try their best to get to every door step, but if you are missed, call CCWN and they will do their best to make arrangements,” O’Donnell said.

“Also, leave the bags of food in a visible location for the volunteers who will be making the rounds.”

During the evening of Saturday Sept. 1, police stopped

approximately 300 vehicles.

Of those drivers spoken to seven were required to provide a roadside breath sample for suspicion of being over the legal blood alcohol level of .80 mgs.

Police noted a significant increase in vehicles where the presence of the odour of marijuana was detected. Further investigation revealed no criminal act. Numerous fines were issued to drivers

Mix in the heavy equipment challenge and Pet Paradise Show and you have a very full agenda.

The biggest draw every year are the demolition derbies, which go Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m.

The four-cylinder cars go Friday, with an award up for grabs for Most Outrageous Car. Sunday is reserved for the “big guns” with the six- and eight-cylinder cars taking over.

New this year will be the inclusion of fullsize truck – 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton pickups, Suburbans and like.

No changes with Grimsby all-candidates Accountability will be at a premium in municipal election races in Grimsby and Lincoln this fall.

Grimsby & District Chamber of Commerce is standing pat with its planned open house format meeting set for Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Casablanca Inn. After initially announcing only an open house for Grimsby candidates, the chamber board revamped the agenda to include a mayoral-candidate-only debate.

There will be no debate at the chamber function for ward candidates or regional councillor candidates.

“We have decided to include a debate between the two mayoral candidates (to run one hour, between 7-8 p.m. on Oct. 2), with the Meet & Greet part of the evening to begin at 5:30-7, and continue after the debate until 9 p.m.,” said Rebecca Shelley, chamber office manager in an email last week.

“The chamber’s position is, and always will be, to support and further the interests of our member businesses, and, by ex-

tension, the community at large, in as non-partisan a way as possible.

Which is a similar sentiment voiced by Phil Besseling of the group, A Better Grimsby, which does have a series of all-candidates meetings planned but all incumbents – except for Dave Kadwell – have declined attending.

Besseling said he completely understands the concerns of candidates, but he does not understand the lack of interest in dove-tailing efforts to provide the community with an appropriate debate for all council candidates.

“I understand both the concerns of all candidates and the Chamber’s board of directors in that they want a good, fair discussion of issues. That is all we, A Better Grimsby, want to see,” said Besseling, who noted he visited the chamber office on Friday to re-offer to work together, but his offer was declined.

“But when we hear from can-

didates there is a concern about a moderator’s impartiality and we offer to the Chamber, ‘Sure, you can choose the moderator’.

Then there are worries about the panel that takes the written questions from the floor, so we say, ‘you can put two of three people at the vetting table’. Still we get no sincere interest in planning something?

It is easy to figure out you are looking at a predetermined outcome which makes it simple for incumbents to dodge and the public is greatly limited to hear what they have to say.”

West Niagara Fair this weekend This weekend is West Niagara Fair time, which means makes plans to be there because there are a ton of memories waiting to be created.

Yes, you read the schedules of things going on.

The demo derby will be gonzo. There’ll be tons of snacks: basically hustle and bustle everywhere.

But there is much more than that, too.

How many kids will go on a ride for the time or stick their face in a pile of candy floss (thanks to grandparents sneaking them “a little sugar”). How many first dates do you think will happen this weekend.

Grassroots community events are what makes our area so awesome. Scores of people made it happen with countless volunteer hours. Take a break and go.

If you haven’t been for 10 years, try a redo. You’ll be glad you did. M.W.

It was worth every second The timing for the Labour Day weekend was perfect for me.

ClubWest, which is in the office now for anyone who wants to pick up a copy, was done last week. We had ample lead time to work on the West Niagara Fair feature. Summer was gone and election season is about to go into a full-tilt boogie.

Weeks ago I sent out a series of questions to all candidates, about 65 in total among Grimsby, Lincoln and West Lincoln. About 80 per cent arrived within 24 hours of last Friday’s deadline.

Some sent nothing. A couple were after the deadline.

That left me with three days to work through it all, sort, format and set about laying out answers for one question - the fruits of that labour you can see on Pages 13-16.

So it got done, but absolutely not according to plan.

The culprit: my nephew and his All-Ontario winning pee wee baseball team from Clinton.

I’ll get to the winning part shortly, but first, a word about the competition in the finals, which was played in Waterdown.

Essex, that tumbleweedridden community down near Windsor took on the mighty, mighty Mustangs of Clinton, powered by a massive population of 3,200.

Did I mention I hate Essex?

There are very, very few things living or dead that I really hate. Seriously, one or two, but Essex is on that short list. Why, you ask?

It goes back more than 40 years when I was nine or 10.

Our beloved Clinton Mustangs Jr. D (I can’t believe I just typed Clincoln) hockey club made it to the All-Ontario finals. I don’t remember a whole lot other than my Dad was on the Mustangs executive and I didn’t miss a game.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Like the Peach Kings, guys on those Mustangs teams were and are the stuff of legend with local hockey fans.

I also remember the battle was bitter, super bitter, no doubt enflamed by an illegal stick (a blow torched curve) call in Game 6 which allowed Clinton to tie the score on the power play and win in overtime sending things back to Essex for Game 7.

At Game 7, like other games, we got pelted with tomatoes and eggs throughout the game and a whole lot of language was used – both ways – which I really did not understand.

At the wire, it was 3-2, two seconds on the clock, faceoff in the Essex zone.

Coach Weber (that is all I ever called him) called the boys over and drew up the plan. Puck drop, snap draw from Paul Kelly, back to sharpshooter Robbie Heard, wrister beats the ‘tender high glove side, CLANG off the goal post, we lose.

Wow, that sucked!

So this weekend, my nephew Cam and his teammates made that all better. It took 44 years (Reggie Jackson’s number), but I must say I do feel better. Me seeing it in person was a most unlikely scenario, but it is funny how things work out.

Friday night I get a text from my brother. The boys

won. Hmm, didn’t expect that. I knew they had a good season, but the coaches moved them up a notch because they wanted them to be challenged instead of breezing through at their regular level.

Next game at 10 a.m.

Saturday...hmm, again. I had planned to work all day Saturday and Sunday and try to take Monday off, so going to a game would push work into Monday for sure. Then they played at 2 p.m. Saturday, another win.

Rats! I really wanted to see a game as I don’t get a chance to get home very often, not as often as I should.

Sunday morning, another win and a berth in the finals of the true double knock out tourney. If they won at 2 p.m.

Sunday, they win it all!

So off we went.

On the way, I had a feeling they would lose that game, then there would be a Game 2 of the final as they had to lose two games to be put out. Essex crushed Clinton in that first game and mercied them in five innings.

In the finals, wow, pressure all over the place, playing a team which was really good top to bottom.

Somehow, they did just enough to stay in the game as it was 8-8 going into the sixth inning. The boys rallied for seven runs in the last two innings to go ahead 15-10 and a three-up, three-down final inning capped the win and sent all into a frenzy.

Having won a couple titles in baseball and hockey as a kid, so I knew how they felt. It will be 20 years until he realizes just how special that was to win the Ontario Baseball Association C Championship.

I was exhausted just watching them, baking in the sun, and completely glad I did.

Somewhere, my Dad is smiling big time!

Voters left in dark: reader Dear Editor, Why am I not at all surprised at the news that a majority of incumbent Grimsby councillors are ducking any formal confrontations which might delve into their past record(s) on council. It would not do for the voting public to, finally, have access into the darkest corners at Town Hall which have been kept hidden from

the rate-paying citizenry of this fair Town.

Why else would all the Incumbents want to hide behind an Open House format where they can avoid talking to anyone who tries to ask real questions about town issues, its many problems and failures?

If one looks at those records in any serious manner, it is quickly apparent why they won’t face the potential damage a debate will, likely, cause to their chances on Oct. 22.

Instead, all but Ald. Kadwell seem to be running around trying to avoid that ugly word, “debate”, like it was a dose of the bubonic plague: all the while complaining about possible unfairness, bias and such should they

come out into the light of a debate. Really?

I will be attending the mayoral debate between Ald. Berry, and former Ald. Jeff Jordan with great interest as here might be where some of the past darknesses are brought to

light. But, as far learning about those who actually represent all of us at council, we will remain in the dark (unless you have the good fortune to live in Ward 2 and have Ald. Dave as your voice).

Connect Hearing, with hearing researcher Professor Kathy Pichora-Fuller at the University of Toronto, seeks participants who are over 50 years of age and have never worn hearing aids for a hearing study investigating factors that can influence better hearing. All participants will have a hearing test provided at no charge and if appropriate, the clinician may discuss hearing rehabilitation options including hearing aids. Qualifying participants may also receive a demo of the latest hearing technology. The data collected from this study will be used to further our understanding of hearing loss and improve life-changing hearing healthcare across Canada.

Why participate in the hearing study?

Hearing problems typically result from damage to the ear and researchers have spent decades trying to understand the biology behind hearing loss. More importantly, researchers now realize the need to better understand how hearing

loss affects your everyday life*. In this new hearing study, Professor Pichora-Fuller and her team are trying to find out how people learn to live with hearing loss and how new solutions could help these people take action sooner and live life more fully.

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss1, but most do not seek treatment right away.

In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help2.

This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day.

By studying people who have difficulty hearing in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.
