Fifth Wheel sold, to close
A “real” first day of school
Staff told last week gasbar, restaurant to close by month’s end, truck wash to stay open By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A piece of Grimsby history has been sold, with part of the facility to close Sept. 21. Fifth Wheel Truck Stop restaurant will close, along with the gas bar. At this point, plans call for the Blue Beacon Truck Wash to remain open. “It will be the end of an era,” said Fifth Wheel general manager John Dunstall. “There will be a lot of people who will miss this place.” About 25 people will find themselves out of work when the doors close. “In our heyday, we had 100 or more employees – back in the 80s and 90s,” said Dunstall. The site was the location of the storied Hunt Club, which was sold to Fifth Wheel in 1988. Staff say they were told new owner Fred Losani of Losani Homes plans to develop the area with residential. “I haven’t heard anything official regarding sale/closure of 5th Wheel but it has been rumoured for years,” said Mayor Bob Bentley. Neighbours, members elated at Kingdom Hall’s opening The members of the shiny new Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall are happy and neighbours are definitely happy with the new Grimsby facility officially opening its doors last Saturday. A steady stream of
visitors toured the site at Bartlett and Lake Streets. “It was all done with volunteer labour and donated materials,” said congregation elder Kevin Downes, noting work started Sept. 8, 2014 and
the first meeting was held in December. “It was a 13-week build.” The Grimsby facility will be home to three congregations, Grimsby, Beamsville and Smithville – about 360 to-
tal members, said Downes. Previously, the congregation had its home on Mountain Street Grimsby for the last 60 years, so a move to a new neighbourhood is a big deal.
“We have talked to all the neighbours. They are very happy we are here. They hated the idea of high density townhouses being built next door, so they are very pleased to have us here,” said
Downes. And why not? The grounds are large and beautifully landscaped. “All the landscaping was started on a Tuesday and done by the following Friday. See HALL, Page 2
