And... They’re off! MP hopefuls start long road to October election

Staff Sgt. Chris Scotland returns to Grimsby after stints in St. Catharines, Welland and Port Colborne. Williscraft - Photo

8 District gets new top cop A homecoming, of sorts, for Chris Scotland who took over Tuesday By Mike Williscraft NewsNow A history in Niagara’s west end and family connections were just two reasons Staff Sgt. Chris Scotland jumped at the opportunity to return to 8 District, this time as Niagara Regional Police Service’s westend district commander. “I spend 12 years here supporting the community policing initiative. I also have three boys who live here so Grimsby is where I spent most of my time,” said Scotland, who officially took over the post Aug. 4. “I am very familiar with the area and the challenges faced. There has been quite a bit of turnover here and I hope to stabilize that, so I am very happy to be here.” Scotland has covered a great deal of

ground since starting his career in what he called the largest slums in England in 1975. He moved to Canada and started with Toronto police in 1979, eventually making a connection to Niagara while working the Paul Bernardo investigation. He spent a year in Niagara as part of a security detail for a terrorist trial. After that he was hooked. A strong proponent of police visibility and community connection, Scotland said he plans to instill that belief in his district. “After 40 years on the job, I have an oldefashioned style. I like to hit the pavement, walk the beat, get out into businesses to meet the people in town,” said Scotland. “That approach seems to have had a positive effect in other communities.”

Dean Allison, Nameer Rahman and Phil Rose have one thing in common today: they all want to be elected member of parliament for the new Niagara Riding in the Oct. 19 federal election. Prime Minister Stephen Harper requested a writ of election Aug. 2, launching the longest campaign since 1872. The Niagara Riding now includes Wainfleet, while Glanbrook has been shifted out of the riding. Allison, running for the Conservative Party, was first elected in 2004 and seeks reelection for a fifth time. Rose, running for the Liberals, is an educator and musician whose previous election experience was running for the Canadian Action Party in the 2004 election run. Rahman, running for the New Democrats, a resident of Grimsby, was named to the Grimsby Economic Development Advisory Committee last fall an serves as committee’s vice-chair.

While Rose noted he was glad to be on the campaign trail, he did note the length of that trail is longer than it could have been. “Naturally, we share the general view that Stephen Harper continues to govern in the interests of Stephen Harper, and that for this he’ll pay a price, as Canadians learn that it will cost them about $125 million extra to stage this elongated election,” said Rose. Allison said the state of Canada’s economy remains a central focus for all. “As we all know, our economy is still fragile, primarily as a result of economic issues on the world stage. As Canadians we have weathered the financial downturns better than most countries, and this has been a direct result of our governments strong leadership,” said Allison. Rahman said jobs in Niagara are among key issues on his list of campaign goals. See ELECTION, Page 3

ELECTION From Page 1 “Our focus for this election is job creation by revitalizing Niagara’s manufacturing sector, defending our agricultural communities from misguided free trade agreements and supporting working families with measures like $15-a-day childcare,” said Rahman. On the local front, Rose said his focus would be on infrastructure investment. “We intend to make relevant infrastructure investments in order to create the conditions for significant job creation in the riding. Beamsville Scout hut to get facelift The Beamsville Scout hut is a well-used, well-loved little building. It was built on Spruce Street in the 1950s by the Beamsville Lions Club on land willed to the Lions. About 5,000 children and youth have been through those doors countless times over the years. That is the hut’s history. Its future was assured on Friday by a federal funding announcement that will provide a revamp of the building to modernize and expand it.

Group Commissioner, (and Beamsville Lion) Lloyd Clarke with Scout Liam Arnott at the Spruce Street Scout Hut.

Niagara West-Glanbrook MP Dean Allison was in Beamsville to present the Scouts with $67,500 on Friday as part of the Canada 150 program. The Carnegie Building in Grimsby was also provided with $360,000 in grant money to rehabilitate the historic building. “There will be an addition built to the front (of the hut), two accessible washrooms one for boys and one for girls as well as a new kitchen,” said Ann Marie Torello-Arnott, 1st Beamsville Scouting communications person. The present kitchen is a small galley kitchen with little room to move. “A bigger kitchen will allow more opportunities to build on life skills,” said TorelloArnott. The new kitchen will also be accessible, she added. The Scouts will be working on a fundraising campaign to match the grant amount. This announcement is one of many for projects approved through the Canada 150 Program that will improve and preserve community spaces across southern Ontario, with the aim of giving back to Canadians and creating a lasting legacy as Canada prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.

THE QUESTION CORNER Q. What is the difference between Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes? A. Diabetes is a chronic condition affecting over 3 million Canadians. In diabetes, there is too much sugar (glucose) in the blood. There are two main types: Type 1 occurs when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that converts glucose from food into energy. About 10% of people with diabetes have type 1. Safety is not a Slogan ... It’s a way of Life

Trees can lose hundreds of gallons of water on a hot day, so they need a regular, if modest, supply. About 90% of water-absorbing root hairs are in the top foot of soil. As little as an inch of water dripped or sprinkled around a tree once a week can save it from next year’s chain saw. In populated areas, trees do more than provide residents a shady respite. They clean the air of pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone. Evaporation from tree leaves pulls significant amounts of heat from the atmosphere, lowering air temperatures and reducing the need for air conditioners at night. Call Safe Tree with any questions.

Leverage your plan B and avoid frustration. • Don’t drive if you’re in a bad mood: A stressful day can contribute to road rage, so make sure you’re in a good head space before you take the wheel. A biopsy which came up inconclusive led to surgery,” said Stephanie. “My career took priority at that time and a year later I decided to go back and see my doctor.” Three surgeries later she was diagnosed with Stage 2 cancer.

Since her diagnosis, she has lost a brother to colon cancer and a sister to breast cancer. “Both parents also were touched by the ugly disease which ended my mother’s life in 2000,” said Stephanie who now makes her home in Hamilton. The year 2002 was a tough one. “It consisted of chemo and radiation but my dogs kept me walking every day and inspired me to keep smiling with hope,” she said. Her cancer treatment was finally behind her by fall and life returned to normal. Then at 46, a routine mammogram found abnormalities in her right breast so further surgery was done. “I count my blessings as all was clear,” she said. “My angels were with me.” Having cancer had her reflecting on what she wanted out of life and she decided she needed to make some changes. “At the age of 49, I made a hard decision that my unhappy marriage was over and walked away from a great lifestyle to go back to find myself,” she said. “I started to run, swim, bike and do yoga and that all became my stress relief.” The past three years has been a time of reflection and self-discovery. “The light at the end of the tunnel brought clarity and direction,” she said. “I left my secure job and created my company Sundara Energy from nothing and what an empowering experience that has been.” She ran her first marathon in Montreal as a 50th birthday gift to herself. “I have reinvented myself and am happy with my life!” She now faces more challenges as her latest mammogram revealed more suspicious cells but she continues to train and stay focused on the positive. “I am training because I can and will succeed in doing my best effort for those who have lost the battle and who will never get this chance,” said Stephanie. “I will be there for my sister and to silently inspire hope and strength in others who fight to find their way in life back to happiness!” Her advice to women fighting their own battle is this: don’t lose sight of your dreams, keep your life moving forward and keep your goals alive even as you fight.

Shipwreck Dars-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, on June 20, 1977. The vessel was inbound that day from Quelimane, Mozambique, only to get stuck before it was able to reach the dock. It was not until Oct. 13, 1977, that efforts to refloat the freighter succeeded. Philippias was taken to Mombasa, Tanzania, and laid up there until sold for scrap in 1979. The ship departed under tow on May 8, 1979, and arrived at Gadani Beach, Pakistan, on May 24 where the hull was broken up by the Adan Corp. Ltd.

Harveen Sandhu

By Skip Gillham For NewsNow Belgien was a Danish vessel that came to the Great Lakes in 1964. It was built at Helsingor, Denmark, and launched Oct. 9, 1953. It was completed the following January and spent almost all of its career on saltwater. The 125.5 metre long cargo carrier was briefly renamed Cap Ray in 1962, likely due to a short term charter arrangement, and then resumed sailing as Belgien again later in the year. It was sold and registered in Greece as Philippias in 1973 and sailed as such until going aground while off

Election trail luke warm Yes, the federal election campaign is underway and headed toward its Oct. 19 end. Unless one of the leaders makes a miscue it is highly unlikely anything of note by the time decision day comes around will take place. It’s August. Most people are still planning their summer vacations if not already being on them. The big bullets will be saved for post-Labour Day. That is likely why the only relevant poll right now is the one which notes about 60 per cent of Canadians are undecided right now. That makes any popularity poll completely irrelevant as that high a percentage is massive and would allow any candidate to overcome low, current ratings. That aside, it would be good to see the Tories drop the “he’s not ready” stuff regarding Justin Trudeau. Not that that is overly harsh, but if Canadians lived by that thinking, Harper surely would have never been elected when he came up M.W.

Election arrives, grants vanish Just wanted to touch on a point briefly regarding our recent stories about possible grants to support Grimsby’s biodigester project. The words of Grimsby Energy Board chair James Detenbeck noting the organization’s plan was to finance the project themselves and if grants came through, great. Over the last year, Mayor Bob Bentley made this point at every turn, so the message was always consistent. I had asked Ald. Carolyn Mullins, as chair of Grimsby Finance Committee, for comment last week and she could not get back to me by press time, but she offered, “The grants, if we are successful in securing them, would be an added bonus to the success of this project. The plan was always to fund through debt financing. I continue to believe the project is sound, the business plan is solid. As we secure contracts for the input, the outlook continues to look good.” Reasonable. But that is not to say the federal and provincial grants were not somewhat expected, otherwise, why would Mayor Bentley have continued his push for reconsideration from the province. The federal money, as MP Dean Allison noted last week was sitting right there for the taking. The feds just wanted the provincial government to ante up its third of the project’s funding, $1.5 million. As anyone waiting for a sign of life for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s rebuild knows, provincial money has been scarce to none in these

MIKE WILLISCRAFT parts as Liberals have not wanted to water Mr. Hudak’s garden in the slightest. Because of the unusual nature of the project and cost to what is a publicly held company, it should receive an unusual level of public scrutiny. That is my feeling, anyways. So it is great the business plan can absorb a $3.5 million hit . This project could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, and I am not saying otherwise. What I am saying is Grimsby ratepayers deserve details on this one, not revenue reports with no expense/ cost reports to balance the economic story. ****** Every time I see Niagara bound traffic on the QEW backed up past Ontario Street in Beamsville, or Toronto bound traffic backed up to Fifty Road – both have happened in the last week – I think the provincial Liberals really blew it by quashing the Mid-Peninsula Corridor. Think about that for a minute....if you took onethird of the traffic, or more, off the QEW as, more than 10 years on, a complete connection for the Mid-Pen

would be close to completion if not be done. How nice would that be? When governments talk about believing infrastructure is important, they have to recognize that Toronto is not the only area that needs new and improved roads. GO Train will be great. That won’t help truck traffic, just to give one example. ****** Not much for movie reviewing, but I have to say, we caught the new Mission Impossible installment on the weekend and it was awesome. Seeing it in a theatre a must and – spoiler alert – the well-publicized scene with Tom Cruise hanging off a plane happens right off the top but there is plenty to back it up. Good characters, good story, good mix of action and dialogue. No wonder it is #1 world wide. ****** And on the traffic bit...we opted to come back late Sunday to avoid the carnival that is holiday traffic in the summer. We drove through that crazy wall of rain about Whitby. Trip to Montreal Thursday night, 9.5 hours. Trip back, 6.5 (with the rain). Monday there was a major accident westbound that closed the 401 and forced cars off to detour. Can’t even imagine that. Yes, we could have stayed out for 5-6 hours more on Sunday evening, but we would have spent all that in added drive time on the return trip. Looking pretty smart on that one, for a change :)
