Niagara West mayors pitch WLMH to health minister, again Niagara West officials were hoping to catch lightning in a bottle when they met with Minister of Health Christine Elliott Tuesday afternoon to push for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital’s rebuild.

The meeting took place at the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa.

“The fact is the current facility is among the oldest active hospitals infrastructure in Ontario, built in 1948,” said Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton.

The meeting itself was about 30 minutes in duration and was attended by Easton, as well as Grimsby Mayor Bob Bentley and West Lincoln Mayor Doug Joyner.

“Ongoing health and safety and infrastructure challenges make it impossible for Hamilton Health Sciences to continue to safely operate all current

services at WLMH indefinitely at the projected levels required. We made that point and ensured that message is strong.”

Elliott did not offer much; just receiving their comments.

“We could not have been more blunt. We had the right people around the table with the mayor, CAOs and Tony Brunet, Lincoln’s liaison with the Board,” said Easton.

“Sam Oosterhoff opened the meeting with very direct comment and set the tone. There was not one punch pulled, “I told the minister, ‘This is the most direct comments you will ever hear’.”

“Our communities need to see an honest effort from the government to rebuild WLMH. We all have priorities in our communities but WLMH is #1 for all of us.”

“Approximately $15 million dollars has been pledged and dedicated to the redevelopment project by our communities and the HHS Board has committed to the rebuild of WLMH,” said Easton.

“The proposed plan for the redevelopment of HHS’ WLMH site, completed in 2016 and awaiting government approval, is forward thinking, innovative and meets the needs of our West Niagara communities ensuring adequate care close to home.”

In short, WLMH fits in an overall, comprehensive plan, she said.

Elliott said she would come to Grimsby for a tour, but no timetable was suggested.

Julia Baird, a historian with a culinary flare, will host an open-hearth cooking class at Nelles Manor next month.

Good things cooking at Nelles Manor Reading about history is one thing, but cooking it?

Nelles Manor will host a special open hearth cooking class on Sunday, Sept. 9, which will give you a chance to do just that by learning recipes from the 19th century - including one created by a Grimsby resident in 1840.

“You’ll get a chance to try out a variety of hearth-cooking and butter-making techniques with the help of historic Cook Demonstrator Julia Baird in the museum’s original 230-year old open hearth fireplace, and you’ll also enjoy a tour of the museum, time to sit and enjoy the meal around the harvest table and a booklet of recipes to take home,” said Jess Linzel, Nelles Manor Museum manager.

The session runs from 1-6 p.m. Cost is $30pp, including a tour of the building.

Baird has worked in historic house museums with a culinary focus for a decade, using mid 19thcentury recipes to cook, bake & preserve using an open hearth, brick oven and wood-fired range.

McKillop car show revs up attendees No rain and a steady breeze helped make the inaugural Jeff McKillop Memorial Charity Car & Truck Show a success.

“The event was well attended with over 110 show cars, lots of vendors, a dedicated team of volunteers, musicians and the attendees.

We were thankful to speak with friends, new and old, and for those who shared their stories, bought raffle tickets and shared in our day of awareness. I feel that Jeff would have been proud!” said Jeff’s sister Jennifer.

The event was planned to raise awareness and funds for mental health, suicide and PTSD issues. It is named for Jeff, who took his own life in May. Results on the fundraising were not completed by press time.

A child’s life stolen Smithville couple travelling to Edmonton for PANDAS treatments after sudden onset of debilitating disorder for their nine-year-old son

By Joanne McDonald For NewsNow Last September marked an exciting first day back to school for Lane Tadeson.

The articulate, funny Grade 4 student couldn’t wait to tell his parents it was the best day, he had the best teacher, and all his friends were in his class.

The second day the school called before lunch to tell Carl and Melissa that something was wrong with their son.

“The second day of school we put a fully functioning well adjusted child on the bus at 8:30 a.m. and at 10:15 a.m. the school called and said come and get him.” Melissa, a teacher, was at work. Carl called and he sounded scared. “Something’s wrong with Lane.”

There was no warning of the tsunami that would break over the Tadeson family that morning and plunge them into an ocean of fear and chaos and isolation as they struggled to find help.

Their eight-year-old son was in the eye of a storm and his childhood was gone.

Paralyzing anxiety, uncontrollable rage, vocal and motor tics that were chilling to watch, behaviour regression, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) not eating, vomiting, extreme mood swings, sensory abnormalities, tantrums and depression consumed Lane’s life.

“He would be fine and then five minutes later he’s sobbing, talking about hurting himself.” The Smithville

family stopped eating, they stopped sleeping, and their existence was reduced to surviving the shock and finding help.

Lane’s brain was on fire and the diagnosis, when it was finally confirmed, was PANDAS, an acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated With Streptococcal Infections.

Like Lane’s Type 1 diabetes, PANDAS is an autoimmune disease. It is a misdirected autoimmune response where the immune system responds to an infection like strep throat by attacking the brain. Instead of attacking the virus, the body’s immune system attacks the basal ganglia, the command centre of the brain that is associated with movement, learning and emotions. A distinguishing trait is the abrupt onset of the disorder.

Her heartache poured out around the kitchen table, Melissa talked about the little boy who was bright, articulate, athletic, played hockey and soccer and loved school. He was kind and compassionate and loved to laugh. Lane was a beautiful and exceptional child - and then he was gone.

“It was shocking and traumatic,” Melissa said.

“It was like you’re looking at your son and he is the same physically, but you don’t recognize him. It’s like someone pressed pause on his childhood.” Lane, now 9, missed all of Grade 4.

Melissa turned to the

internet, searching until she felt demented with fear and fatigue. She had already ticked off the boxes of symptoms and she suspected PANDAS, before she began a medical journey that would include 23 doctors in her quest for a diagnosis and help.

Costly phone consults, medical appointments, requests for referrals, days spent in hospital emergency rooms - psychiatry, psychology, pediatrics, endocrinology, therapy - St. Catharines General Hospital, McMaster in Hamilton, Sick Kids in Toronto.

Melissa reached out everywhere and came home with pamphlets on dealing with a child with anxiety and recommendations to put her son on anti-psychotic and anti-depressant medications.

“It felt like I was forging a path for myself. It was lonely, isolating and draining.”

It was the beginning of her understanding that PANDAS is misunderstood, misdiagnosed and in some cases not believed by some doctors who don’t agree that a strep infection can cause neuropsychiatric responses. There is a medical cause Melissa said, but symptoms look psychiatric, “so you get funnelled the psychiatric route.”

It is not in her nature to be confrontational, and Melissa was woefully unequipped for the battle that she was inadvertently launched into when Lane became dangerously ill on Sept. 6.

She spent months, while her son was seriously ill, overcoming roadblocks and barriers that were placed in their path while they sought treatment for their son. The family felt abandoned by the medical community and were left to advocate, and find their

While medical communities grapple with the diagnostic theories and controversy over treatment, the impact on families who have lost their children to this deceptively-named dis-

order are living a nightmare that is all too real.

Finally, to the credit of a therapist, a strep test was done. It came back positive and the blood work came back with elevated antibodies, both hallmarks for suspecting PANDAS. And Oct. 19, it was finally confirmed - what Carl and Melissa already knew - Lane See PANDAS, Page 13

From Page 12 had PANDAS. “We thought finally, we have a diagnosis. Now we know the beast we’re dealing with and we can move forward with treatment. If only I had known how difficult that path would be,” Melissa said.

“There are so many layers, the trauma for the child, the trauma for the family and then the layer of not being able to access appropriate treatment.”

He was put on antibiotics and the strep cleared, but Lane did not get better.

The search was then on to find doctors who could offer IVIG Intravenous Immunoglobulin therapy, a process where donor antibodies are infused to reboot the immune system. IVIG is used to treat various autoimmune, infectious, and idiopathic diseases.

Melissa said IVIG is part of an established treatment protocol and is offered to children with PANDAS in both Western Canada and the United States, but she felt stonewalled at every turn in Ontario.

Melissa found a ‘PANDASliterate’ doctor in Chatham but he had a two-year wait list and recommended them to Dr. Lyle McGonigle at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Hearing that Lane had diabetes and knowing the potential complications to insulin levels from the PANDAS symptoms, the Edmonton-based doctor

said Lane was a candidate for IVIG therapy and told the family to ‘bring him out West.”

FIRST TREATMENT Lane had his first IVIG treatment January 15, the first of seven trips to Edmonton.

The first treatment was dramatic and confirming. “After IVIG, his appetite resolved, his sleeping improved, his emotional lability improved, his sensory abnormalities improved, his tics resolved,” said Melissa.

The two symptoms that have been difficult to budge have been the anxiety and OCD. His anxiety is still keeping him housebound and progress is further impacted by the complications of his diabetes.

Those treatments, about $20,000 per infusion, are covered for the family under the provincial ministry health but Melissa questions, “if it’s considered experimental in Ontario, why are they paying for it in Edmonton?”

While the IVIG is covered, it costs the family more than $2,000 each month to make the trip to Edmonton. Carl is dealing with serious medical issues and Melissa had to take a leave from work as of last fall. It’s a staggering financial burden heaped on top of the physical and emotional exhaustion of getting Lane there for the treatment.

What is PANDAS? PANDAS is an acronym for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections.

The symptoms are usually dramatic, happen “overnight and out of the blue,” and can include extreme anxiety, motor and/or vocal tics, obsessions and/or compulsions. The disorder involves sudden and often extreme changes in personality, behaviour, and movement in children following a strep infection.

In an analysis of current literature regarding IVIG therapy in PANDAS, a report published in July 2016, in the Journal of Neurology and Neurosurgery stated that 60 per cent of children showed overall clinical improvement, 24 per cent achieved remission of neuropsychiatric symptoms at final assessment, 9 per cent were unchanged, and none were worse following IVIg therapy.

Healing is gradual over several months. Any form of infection will exacerbate a child while healing. Exposures and illnesses must be managed carefully.

“I know it sounds melodramatic. But Carl and I have PTSD. It was so shocking to put your ‘normal’ child on the school bus and then not recognize him when you pick him up an hour and 45 minutes later.

“It’s been so terrifying and disorienting for Lane. We talk about the trauma and how it has impacted Carl and me, but we need to remember there is a nine-year-old boy at the centre of this and his carefree childhood is gone,” said Melissa.

“We saw 23 doctors throughout his journey. I want them to recognize it when they see it - doctors, teachers who see major changes in a child’s behaviour. The child could have PANDAS. Swab him for strep.”

“You can consign a child to a lifetime of mental health issues or do a simple swab for strep.

If caught early, there is a much better prognosis.”

Speedy diagnosis and treatment can reduce the likelihood of long term implications.

Lane is showing improvements. His anxiety is still keeping him housebound. Some children have immediate results and significant improvements but Lane’s progress is further impacted by the complications of diabetes.

The family will continue treatments, will travel to the ends of the earth.

“We will continue the treatments as long we’re seeing improvements.”

Canada Day, long weekend, the Grimsby Minor Hockey Association in coordination with the West Lincoln and Lincoln hockey minor hockey raised money for the family.

After conquering her home community with a sold out show in June at Grimsby’s Trinity United Church, Louisa Okeane will take on the rest of Niagara at the Oh Canada Eh! Dinner Theatre.

Okeane, who was born in Ireland but grew up in Burlington, was hooked on acting as a toddler.

“I think it was movie musicals, Grease Two in particular. My parents recorded it off the TV one afternoon and that VHS quickly became my greatest possession!” Okeane recalled.

“I didn’t even know there was an original Grease. I thought it was just called Grease Two. I knew every word and even some of the choreography. My mom

had the cassette tape recordings of Les Miserables and the Phantom that I listened to on repeat. It drove my big brother crazy.”

She spent seven years in Vancouver honing her craft before moving back to Ontario and Grimsby in 2009.

While she is part of Oh Canada Eh! cast, the Aug. 28 show at the theatre will be Okeane and St. Catharine’s funny man Craig Maguire.

This show, comprised mainly of show tunes, will be hosted with a similar charitable angle as $2 from every ticket will go to charity.

Grimsby street party smokin’ summer fun With a pledge to meet everyone again in 2019 for Summer Street Party II, version #1 of the event did not disappoint Saturday in Grimsby.

A packed Main Street from 5 p.m. to when the Reklaws wrapped up on stage about 11 p.m., young and old alike snacked, drank, chatted and had a ton of fun all while helping raise over $100,000 for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The event, hosted by Homes By DeSantis, Forty Public House and NewsNow was a follow up of sorts to 2016’s Get Hip For Cancer which was a massive success.

With the support of Homes By DeSantis, whose team took on organizing the event, Gabe DeSantis said the Street Party will be an annual event on the third Saturday in August.

Cleaning for a cause

Volunteers and customers turned out for a FORT car wash in Smithville last week with Brenda Walker of Royal LePage Niagara both helping wash cars and getting members of her Smithville United Church to turn out. Enough money was raised to send 40 local youth on a day trip to Canada’s Wonderland.

West Niagara Fair on horizon Many will be attending this weekend’s Winona Peach and as well they should.

Just two weekends down the road is the West Niagara Fall Fair...another classic event.

This year, organizers are looking for volunteers to help with everything from gate admissions to information booth support.

The event runs from Sept. 7-9 and 2-3 hour volunteer time slots are available throughout every day.

Time for diplomacy is over You know, supporting West Lincoln Memorial Hospital is not a bad thing.

It’s what we have.

For sure it has warts, some of them exceedingly old.

Yes, there is a lot of pent up frustration in the community about lack of attention and/or the outright ignoring WLMH endured during the Liberal government’s reign.

Yes, many are still scratching their respective noggins with “Where did all those millions of fundraised dollars from years ago go?”

Yes, sometimes there are long waits for appointments or ER services, but that really is a reflection of the entire health care system not just WLMH and its staff.

Premier Doug Ford and his crew got handed a lot of lemons when they crushed in the election. It is in his hands if he creates a mountain of lemonade or not.

One of those lemons is our lemon, WLMH. Saturday, for the first time in many years, WLMH and fundraising was a major point of discussion for me and people I was running into as I motored around the Summer Street Party on Grimsby’s Main Street.

If you recall, it was back in June when I fired a salvo across the bow of Forty Public House manager Mark Woods. The salvo: let’s take another shot at another summer event, a little like but nothing like the Get Hip For Cancer we did back in 2016.

We skipped last year on purpose because we didn’t want anyone to compare an event with that of the Tragically Hip’s final concert. That won’t be duplicated and we won’t ever try.

When we did that first event, though, we did talk about doing something annual. In walks Gabe DeSantis and his desire to get behind

MIKE WILLISCRAFT a major community event with the goal of it being annual and, “POOF!”, we have a pretty darn good team.

So that is a very good thing for the community. Gabe and his team deserve a lot of credit not only for stepping up and but taking a big swing and knocking that puppy right out of the park!! For a first-time event, it went great.

Now, when thinking about a beneficiary for this year’s event at the start of planning, WLMH was on the table.

Part of that discussion was it would be both a positive and a negative.

There are many who will support all things WLMH no matter what. And that support is appreciated by all.

There are those who like a good time and will turn out to kick the tires and see what it is all about. That support is appreciated, too.

But there are those who will stay away and keep hands in pocket when WLMH is mentioned any more. Some even feel lied to about the whole rebuild donation thing.

On that point, I cannot stress enough, information regarding all the original capital campaign donations has been ultra consistent - both before and after amalgamation with Hamilton Health Sciences. A condition of the amalgamation was the funds would stay in the community

and go to the rebuild - whenever that happens.

Fast forward to Tuesday afternoon and I got a couple of minutes between meetings with Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton while she was at the AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) conference in Ottawa.

Just prior to our chat, Easton - along with Grimsby and West Lincoln’s mayors, CAOs and Lincoln hospital liaison Coun. Tony Brunet had a meeting with Minister of Health Christine Elliott.

“Our communities need to see an honest effort from the government to rebuild WLMH. We all have priorities in our communities but WLMH is #1 for all of us.”

What I didn’t have room for in that Page 3 story was her next comment.

“People don’t believe us any more when we talk about it (the rebuild).”

I find that entirely believable and horrifically sad at the same time.

Easton said the meeting was a “no holds barred” affair. I hope so.

Years upon years of neglect catches up to the physical plant every day while staff do their best to make things sustainable.

The reason I wanted the street party to see its proceeds go to WLMH was to put it in a positive light and get people talking about it again. I recognize that comes with baggage, but the baggage needs to be discussed, too.

The Tories have a lot of work to do across the province, but this Riding has been a cornerstone of PC support certainly in the 23 years I have been around. Politics aside, HHS has prioritized the rebuild, too. The ball is in Elliott’s court now.
