What is “living as-if”? Pretend that you have to budget every month for a mortgage and property tax payment, utilities, and home insurance. For example, let’s assume that your current rent is $1800 per month, and we’ve determined that home ownership will cost you $3000 per month; Can you save the difference - $1200, per month? If you can set aside this $1200 monthly for 4 years, that’s an eventual downpayment of 57,600!

In my 25 years’ experience as a mortgage broker, I have found that this exercise is the best way to determine if you are financially ready to own your first home, and, it is also a great exercise for existing homeowners who are contemplating moving to a more expensive home.

Wynhofen, B.A.Econ., Principal

Is this week your last back-to-school year? If so, then you are probably already making post-graduation plans for your first job in your field of study, and this plan might include moving out of your parents’ home. Your home-ownership dream may still be 5 to 10 years out, but, if you start saving as soon as you begin your career, you will accumulate the funds you’re going to need for that eventual house purchase. Also, you will develop a very strong savings habit that will see you through financially-adverse times.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Zachary Prankie on his 32nd year on August 2 2022. Loving son of Michelle (Timson) Prankie and Mark Prankie. Loving brother of Steven and Bill (William) Prankie. Loving grandson of Kenneth and Patricia Timson and Len Prankie and Flora Roberts. A celebration of life will take place Sept. 23rd, 2022 anytime after 2 pm at his home in rural Smithville. Zach will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.

retiring from farm life Joan and Ben moved to their new home in Beamsville. Eventually the time came for them to downsize and they moved into the new retirement home in town. During her time there Joan enjoyed playing Euchre with the group and watching Blue Jays games, Jeopardy, Match Game and Blue Bloods on TV. She enjoyed herself most when Brad Boland came to entertain and sang her often requested “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”.

Whether she was called ‘Ma’ by grandson Tim Friesen, granddaughter Katie Gottli (Joe) and great-grandson Michael Gottli or called ‘Grandma’ by granddaughter Lindsay Friesen, granddaughter Rachel Friesen (Cole) and grandson Brett Friesen, Joan was the same proud grandmother.

It is just a good, oldfashioned community event giving friends and neighbours a chance to get out, chat, have a bev erage and have a good time. They, too, have a solid day of programmed events and entertainment so don’t miss the oppor tunity to get out and take part.Grimsby’s 100th anniversary celebration is a different animal alto gether.Itwill actually com bine two events - the centennial celebration of Grimsby’s incorporation as a municipality and the inaugural Grimsby Arts Walk. The 100th brings a heightened element of festivities to the day, to be sure. Combined, it will be like Happening in Grimsby on steroids...and I mean that in a good way. It will have much of the same elements...and then some. There will be much

I would never take any money for Jerry’s ad. She would insist again and I would decline. Then she would go out and spend triple the amount on new toys, bringing them in for us to donate to GBF. Just as sweet a lady as one could imagine; the kind who helps weave a tight bond in the fab ric of any community. She will be missed. M.W.

From those entering during the 10 a.m.-4 p.m. event, one name will be drawn to win a family trip for four to the Royal Ontario Museum, spon sored by NewsNow and Grimsby DIA. It is the per fect mix of art and history in one activity fun for the whole family. As noted, I’ll take the feast any day.

We’ve been devoid of community events for two full years until this sum mer when things started to get fired up in fits and starts. These next two weeks, it will be full sails and away we go with West Ni agara Fair on the immedi ate horizon this weekend and then Grimsby 100 Celebration the following weekend - with Lincoln’s Fling on King the same day to fill out your enter tainment dance card.

Feast or famine? I’ll take feast

They have a full slate of events, the midway returns, demo derbies, live music and tons of interesting agriculturebased attractions and exhibitions so it is a mustattend. That’s for sure.

Like all community groups, West Niagara Ag riculture Society is pain fully short of volunteers, so if you would like to help out, give them a call, 905-309-9939.Inpastyears, there would have been multiple releases about the fair’s goings on and inquiries about sponsorships for the various programming, but there was none of that this year, so I hope it all goes well.

The Grimsby Arts Walk has been on a burner of some sort for 18 months since the Grimsby DIA first started planning a possible replacement for the defunct Grimsby Arts Festival. There is simply too many talented people in the area to not have a showcase for their efforts, so the new format for the event will fill that need.

So much for a valu able insightful resource.

On the 200th an niversary of this date, the Grimsby Historical Society held a special event. It was a joint ef fort by the Grimsby His torical Society, and the historical folks in West Lincoln.Iwasasked to write a one-act play, based on the original minutes.

A DropSmallofInk

It always interested me that a group of 46 families (42 of them from New Jersey, four from Pennsylvania) who didn’t want to live under the new repub lic to the south gath ered together at an inn in New Jersey. They learned of the gather ing by word-of-mouth and joined the group of strangers to walk through the woods to reach the comparative safety of Upper Cana da. But that’s another story, or rather there are many stories, for each family had one.

The historical society didn’t have Grimsby Archives yet. so I called Janet Cannon at Grims by Museum and asked for a photocopy of the minutes. She promised to look them up and make a copy for me.

Ron Book, Mayor of Grimsby and Joan Packham, Mayor of West Lincoln arrived on horseback, while the rest of the council came by open wagon.

The event went great.

April 5, 1790 was the date of the first township meeting held in the Niagara peninsula.

The good news was Janet fount the minutes.

News Now • Thursday, September 8, 2022 • Page 15

“Well,” Janet said,” the bad news is they’re only half-a-page long!”

The meeting was held at the home of John Green, now the site of Trinity United Church.
