A big day!

Wins, losses with Cole’s lands OLT decision

“This is a definite win for heritage properties in Grimsby regardless of location, but it is also a major loss,” said “Unfortunately,Schroeder.they granted six-storey Mixed Use, which opens Pandora’s Box for the rest of Main Street.”

Heritage buildings at 141 and 147 Main Street East must be preserved, but in its Sept. 8 decision the Ontario Land Tribunal has permitted six-storey Mixed Use along Main Street.

It was a big day for Myles Glover at the West Niagara Fair on Saturday, a milestone, as it was his first year of open season on the “big” rides. Myles got a little help from his dad, Austin, to confirm he was good to go for the spinning wheel ride. For full coverage of the weekend’s events, please turn to Pages 22-23. Marks

Schroeder noted that is not the case for the corner of Wentworth Drive and Main East where the new build will be right up to the sidewalk creating a “downtown feel” as opposed to residential.

These moves are seen as both significant wins and losses for the community says Ron “Schroeder, spokes man for citizens’ group Save Main Street.

Another key item of debate with the development proposed by Losani Homes regards the setback for the new build. On that, it was a win/loss situation as well, saidAlongSchroeder.muchof Main Street, the OLT noted, “The de bate on compatibility relates to certain TOP (Town Official Plan) policy directions: commercial buildings along Main to be close to the street; setbacks to re spect those of heritage buildings; and suitable gra dation to adjacent residential uses....between 141 and 147, maintain the proposed setbacks along Main, being somewhat deeper than the setbacks of the heritage structures.”However,

In its decision, the OLT noted, “The Tribunal finds on the evidence that the following policies addressed by various witnesses are more suitably upheld by the re tention of 141 (known as Cole’s Christmas Cottage) and 147 (Cole’s Florist) in substantial form, rather than their near complete removal and associated commemora tive efforts. The Tribunal also finds that a six-storey, mixed-use development is appropriate for this site, as tempered by various design features, to be suitable for Main and compatible with adjacent residential uses. Changes to the site and building design will be neces sary based on the Tribunal’s findings on heritage.”

October 26, 2022 is the Bank’s next policy announcement date. I remain committed to keeping you informed, and providing you with expert mortgage advice in all economic cycles.

On the bright side, the Bank offered that as the effects of tighter monetary policy work through the economy, it “will be assessing how much higher interest rates need to go to return inflation to target.

Last Wednesday, the Bank of Canada increased its policy interest rate for the fifth time this year in an effort to combat inflation. This time, the increase was 75 basis points.Thisbenchmark rate is highly influential in setting other interest rates that matter to Canadians; the Prime rate at most financial institutions is now 5.45%. With higher mortgage rates, the housing market is pulling back as anticipated, following unsustainable growth during the pandemic.

It was the Bank’s forward-looking commentary on the likelihood of future increases that captured the headlines last week. The Bank stated it is not finished hiking its policy interest rate just yet, and noted that central banks around the world also continue to tighten monetary policy.

feel at all. That is unfortunate for the heritage aspect of Main Street East.”A“redesign” will be needed, Schroeder added, after the report, so there is no way to tell how some of the OLT findings will be dealt with.

The Bank of Canada is resolute in its commitment to achieve a 2% inflation target.

The Bank expects the Canadian economy to “moderate” in the last half of 2022 as global demand weakens and tighter monetary policy begins to bring demand more in line with supply. However, given the outlook for inflation, the Bank’s Governing Council continues to note that its policy interest rate will “need to rise further.”

The new United States had been harsh on those who openly supported the British Crown; it’s no wonder they sought land in Upper Canada where the King still ruled.

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Elizabeth Williams of Beamsville, Ontario on September 3, 2022, at the age of 89. Elizabeth was the loving wife of Jim Williams and is survived by her brother John (Bruncha) Marton and her sister Brigitta Szobolics. Elizabeth was born in Binbrook and raised in Hamilton, Ontario after her parents immigrated to Canada from Hungary. She grew up speaking and writing Hungarian before English with penmanship that could not be matched. She was an avid reader as a young child and if she was not home with her family they could always find her reading at the nearby library. She attended nursing school and shortly after she met the love of her life. Elizabeth was married to Jim for over 60 years and had a wonderful family of three sons and one daughter. She was an excellent cook, loved gardening, swimming, music, dancing and live theater. Most of all, she loved to spend time with her family. She was not only a loving wife, mother and grandmother but she also became an entrepreneur with Jim, owning and operating the KOA Campground in Niagara Falls for 29 years. They also operated the Twinkle Tree Christmas Farm with their family at their home in Beamsville, Ontario. Elizabeth was a member of the Trinity United Church in Beamsville, Ontario for many years and liked to keep herself active with all the social functions happening at the church and the community. Elizabeth and Jim enjoyed many years of traveling the world together and always had adventures to tell when they returned home. Many friends were always made along the way. Gail once asked her, “Where was your favorite place you have visited? Mom said, “Wherever I was at the time”. They were a generous couple and always willing to lend a helping hand. She will be deeply missed by her four children: Craig (Paula) Williams, Martin (Sandra) Williams, Don Williams and Gail (Bryan) Groff; brother John (Bruncha) Marton; sister Brigitta Szobolics; her nieces and nephews, friends and grand children. Grandma will be missed and cherished by Jordy Groff (Darren), Olivia Groff (Ryan), Eric Williams and Leanne Williams (Brad). The Williams family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of the Orchards Retirement Residence in Vineland and to the staff of the Meadows of Dorchester Nursing Home in Niagara Falls for their care and compassion. Our family is extremely grateful. A very special thank you to Dr. S. Keen, her Geriatric Specialist from St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Ham ilton and her longtime family doctor, Dr. Reed. Elizabeth is having a private family memorial at the Stonehouse-Whitcomb Funeral Home in Grimsby, Ontario . A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, if desired, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society. www.smithsfh.com

OBITUARIES

The family would like to thank the excellent caregivers that helped Joy during her last two years, including the staff of the LHIN, CarePartners, West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Hamilton General Hospital, and the Carlisle Retirement Residence. A private funeral has been held. Joy was interred in Queen’s Lawn Cemetery beside Jerry. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation, local food bank, or the Nature Conservancy of Canada, all causes that were dear to Joy, would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to StonehouseWhitcomb Funeral Home, Grimsby, 905-945-2755. www.smithsfh.com

Joy passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3rd, 2022, in Hamilton, Ontario, predeceased in 1998 by the love of her life, her husband Gerald “Jerry” Robert Hanes.

Margaret Joy Hanes (née Guenther)

After moving to Grimsby, Joy and Jerry became long-time fixtures in the downtown as the inseparable partners who owned the Grimsby Meat Market from 1971 until their retirement in 1993.

WILLIAMS, Margaret Elizabeth

Born in Kitchener on February 4, 1928, her parents Evelyn (née Thaler) and Walter Guenther both died when Joy was young. Cared for by family, Joy moved to Burlington at a young age. Joy worked hard to put herself through nursing training and was a proud graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1950. She met Jerry in elementary school, and they married on September 9, 1950.

Joy had a generous spirit; she spent countless hours baking in support of the boy scouts, various school and church organizations, and McNally House. She was an experienced seamstress and keen quilter and knitter; making teddy bears brought her much happiness. Joy was an avid reader and loved puzzles (crossword and jigsaw); she enjoyed Wednesday after noon coffee and cards with her neighbours. Go Blue Jays! Joy was able to travel right across Canada from BC to Newfoundland; sometimes with her children and/or grandchildren. Joy had many friends in Burlington and Grimsby, including her many caring neighbours at her apartment building and around town. She had a fighting spirit (some call it a stubborn streak), that helped her overcome many obstacles throughout her life. In her later years she was known as the “bionic woman” and “the little engine that could” after the many surgeries to repair her hip, knee, heart, and eyes.

The 5 regarding a minor issue (as stated by the now-fired Integrity Com missioner Charles Harnick), ended up costing around six figures when they all whined about the cost of litigation.Legalbills didn’t matter a bit to them when it was some silly goose chase, but on planning items and bio digester they balked at ev ery turn. Odd since, during the 2018 election run many of them supported bolster ing the kitty for litigation. Did they deliver on their 2018 election platform.

They’ve got deals, treats, prizes and games - all the trimmings to kick things off. Beamsville & District Lions Club will run the barbecue will all proceeds going to Community Care of West Niagara, so stop by for a hot dog on your way to or from Pioneer Days down in Jordan!****

Rose Cottage Visiting Volunteers Community Hospice’s executive director Lorraine Hulley, right, and Allison Frattaroli, manager of client services, are ready for Tim Horton Smile Cookie campaign which will direct proceeds from the Beamsville and Vineland locations to the organization from Sept. 19-25.

The good folks at Silver dale will host their annual Chili, Soup and Corn Roast - 4619 Sixteen Rd. in St. Ann’s from 5-6:30 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 16) night. A great chance to visit with family and friends. For that matter, many ran on a platform of account ability and transparency, yet so much of their con duct required closed meet ings, much business was done behind closed doors.

Did you see any retrac tions or apologies? No. Now don’t you think if I made any errors in re porting someone would have picked up the phone, dropped by my office or emailed me to note said miscue.Absolutely.Thepointthere, now is the time for accountability.

A ton of election-related inquiries are coming in every single day, and that’s just fine. A recurring theme is what I could dub “panic” - or at least serious concern that any level of represen tation from the Grimsby 5 sees another term on council.Themain request is for some sort of review to remind people what some of the antics, decisions, conduct of some members of Grimsby council have

Before I get rolling, a couple of quick shout outs: Silverdale Community Cen tre Board and the powers that be at Lincoln Township Motors (LTM).

Water’s deep, time to wade through it

‘Rose’y outlook

I’ve noted it before, but council actually approved having an open mic at the start of council sessions to allow anyone to come and address council with their concerns.Notonly did that not happen, but you had the new administrative process of council approving each agenda before meetings added. This allowed the controlling five to dominate what even got on the table, let alone approved or shot down. That also opened the door to Coun. John Dunstall to rejecting a delegation for no reason other than he didn’t want to hear the speakers’ comments. The water is deep, but it time to wade through it.
