Grimsby soccer celebrates 50 years this Saturday

Fifty years of organized soccer will be given its due this Saturday when a half-century of organized soccer is recognized at Grimsby Town Youth Soccer Club’s celebration at Southward Park.

From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. there will be food trucks, free popcorn, a penny sale, face painting, free cake and Calvin’s Magic Show at 11 a.m.

“The event is to celebrate 50 years of kids playing a great sport, one of the least expen- sive, and it’s a great benefit to the kids. They get to be part of a team and have some fun and that’s what it’s all about,” said GTYSC president Kim Heersink.

Currently, the club has about 1,300 kids enrolled, a health number showing participation is bouncing back from some lower years.

“There were some slow years, but membership has been building,” said Heersink, who has has served as president for eight years.

“When the men’s and women’s teams are doing so wellespecially when the men made it to the World Cup - it made it very exciting for kids to get involved in soccer.”

While Saturday’s event is for current players to enjoy, Heersink noted all are welcome.

“It will be a fun day with everything except for the food trucks free. We just want to celebrate 50 years as a club for a sport so many enjoy,” said Heersink.
