Grimsby approves regional transit Matt Robinson brought the “Moving Transit Forward” road show to a special Grimsby council on Monday and left with a favourable vote supporting the Niagara Region consolidated transportation system.

Robinson, director of Niagara’s GO implementation office, coasted through a 25-page presentation outlining the strengths of the proposed system which will include the establishment of a regional transit commission. The commission will integrate all existing regional and local transit systems, with added enhancements.

Calling the proposal, which has already been approved by Niagara Region as part of a triple majority approval process, Robinson said the option presented is the “fairest, most reasonable approach” to a transit solution, which was “decades in the making.”

While Robinson outlined Grimsby’s uptake on NRT OnDemand Transit has been unprecedented in the region with 25,000 rides in 2021, the economic reality of higher cost was part of the concerns voiced.

Coun. Dave Sharpe outlined several aspects of increased costs to taxpayers.

Sharpe noted most would agree the idea of a full regional transit system has significant benefits, the same people support it will complain when their taxes go up.

“You have to play the tape all the way to the end,” said Sharpe.

For Coun. Dorothy Bothwell, the benefits outweigh financial concerns.

“Looking at the whole picture, there is still a strong need for it,” said Bothwell, who asked Robinson if a “no” vote on the proposal would impact the proposed GO station for Grimsby.

“Metrolinx and MTO (Ministry of Transportation) have been tracking the progress on Niagara’s consolidation very closely,” said Robinson, adding, “MTO has sent me an email after every council vote thus far.”

The proposal was approved 8-1, with Sharpe dissenting.

Grimsby is spending $1.5 million on NRT currently with all costs shifting to the Region’s levy in 2023 with $500,000 in higher costs.

Like all sports organizations between a rock and a hard place with Covid, member Rick Quirk said the Grimsby Curling Club has been carefully following protocol to ensure safety.

All must be fully vaccinated to participate in or attend Grimsby curling-affiliated events.

Liz Golas volunteered to make the customized masks. Selling at $10, Quirk said the club has been able to donate $500 to Dog Guides.

Word of mouth has now expanded orders to the Cayuga Curling Club. A volunteer donates the materials for the masks so every dollar is forwarded to the Foundation.

Golas was already making masks for family and friends and as more requests came rolling in, came up with the fundraising idea. “It costs about $35,000 from breeding to matching the dog with a person in need,” Golas said.

“There is no government funding for the program.”

Longtime music director makes the world a better place for all NYO concert Dec. 18 to honour Laura Thomas

By Joanne McDonald NewsNow The theme has always been music, but scores of variations on the melody have carried Laura Thomas on an endlessly creative and rewarding journey.

The rhythm, the beat, the harmony and the history – for 30 years, Thomas has inspired young musicians with the Niagara Youth Orchestra (NYO) through the pure joy of making music.

And this Saturday, the NYO will honour their former music director with a crescendo of thanks.

“During our first concert of the season on December 18th, the Niagara Youth Orchestra Association will be honouring Laura Thomas for her many years of contributions with the NYOA,” said Michael van Dongen, acting music director.

“Laura wore many hats with the NYOA, including Percussion Section Coach, she was the founding conductor of the Junior Niagara Youth Orchestra (JNYO) and she ended up being the NYO conductor for many years,” van Dongen said. “We wish her well on her future endeavours.”

Thomas told the board she would be stepping down in December 2019. A final concert was planned for June 2020 but Covid hit and it was cancelled.

Instead, Thomas composed ‘Overture for an Unattended Concert’. The youth and alumni created individual videos, Thomas put the virtual orchestra piece together and they watched it on Zoom.

“Laura is a lot of fun but certainly had high expectations for her musicians.

Laura Thomas conducting the Niagara Youth Orchestra. edge in the rehearsals, always had very interesting anecdotes. She expected a lot and they rose to the challenge,” said NYO President Janice Slade.

Slade said the chamber concerts that featured smaller ensembles became very musician-driven under Thomas’ tenure. Instead of the music director picking out the music, the kids would come to her with pieces they wanted to play and Thomas would say, “sure we can do this.” Oriented to the musicians, Thomas highlighted their strengths and often premiered the works of young composers.

Opening up the format to ask students what they wanted to play is one of Thomas’ fondest memories. “Students wanted to take on the challenge and they would knock it out of the park,” Thomas recalled. “The chamber concerts became a showcase for the young Niagara musical talent.”

“I am in awe of all of the Niagara Youth Orchestra people, the board, the

coaches, musical staff and students… how they weathered Covid,” Thomas said.

“They have good leadership, they have a really good system of having coaches come in for sectional rehearsals. And I had the honour of working with some really fine musicians who came in Saturdays to help coach the kids and help them be better musicians.

It was a wonderful system to work in.”

NYO parent Jennifer McKillop, owner of Grimsby’s FUN School of Music, said Thomas taught her son Kalam more than musicianship. “He has learned discipline, perseverance, dedication, time management, problem solving and so much more,” McKillop said. “I know that generations will be affected by Laura’s efforts with each and every student.”

“My initial life plan was to be a journalist,” Thomas said. But music took the headline when she joined the youth orchestra as a high school student.

Thomas earned her chops at Mohawk

College, McMaster University and went on to a master’s degree in conducting from New York’s prestigious Bard College.

From big bands to her backyard, you can find Thomas, conductor, arranger, composer percussionist and teacher, any number of places there is music - playing drums with a swing group; timpani onstage as the Principal Percussionist with the Niagara Symphony Orchestra; conducting the Dundas Valley Orchestra; teaching classical percussion and the conducting course at Mohawk College; as Artistic Director of the Hamilton/Niagara area WomEnchant Chorus & Drummers, a feminist and social justice-oriented choir.

Anyone lucky enough to have attended a ‘Women in Music’ concert performed by the five talented musicians in BroadBand will have powerful memories of the spoken word song about suffragette ‘Nellie McClung’ composed and performed by Thomas.

“Never explain, never retract, never apologize, just get the thing done and let them howl,” still rings through the Black Sea Hall in St. Catharines.

Working with young people, working with professionals, it’s all perfectly suited to Thomas’ personality. “I’m not good at doing just one thing.”

“It certainly turned out for me. I know how much I love being in music and I can’t imagine anything else as rewarding.”

One of the most notable of these was the showing of motion pictures. In 1910, Albert and Bessie Moore opened a motion picture theatre at Grimsby Park. When the park closed for the winter, they moved their venue to Snetsinger Hall.

Four councillors reject “urgent” plea The ongoing battle for control at Grimsby council kept the matter of hunters on Lake Ontario firing toward shore on the shelf at Monday’s meeting.

Coun Lianne Vardy introduced what she deemed an “urgent” Notice of Motion (NoM), requesting it be dealt with at the same meeting as opposed to the subsequent meeting which is part of the Town’s procedural bylaw.

“We seem to be attracting these duck hunters on the lake more than in the past,” noted Vardy, who added jurisdiction has some grey area.

After Coun. Randy Vaine said council

had no jurisdiction on the matter, claiming it was an OPP and MOE matter, Mayor Jeff Jordan said he had done some research which showed Toronto and Kingston have bylaws “extending out into the lake”.

Instead of offering comment on the situation, Coun. Kevin Ritchie focused his attention on Jordan by questioning his research and whether he had prior knowledge of the NoM. With Ritchie, Vaine, Coun. Dave Kadwell and Coun. John Dunstall voting against allowing debate, which needed two-thirds approval, died in a 5-4 vote. It will return at the next council meeting.

Garbage, Blue Box, Grey Box, and Green Bin collection will not be delayed

by Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Collection will occur on your regularly scheduled collection day.

If your property is an Industrial, Commercial, Institutional, or Mixed-Use building within a Designated Business Area that receives collection on Saturday and/or Sunday (St. Catharines and Niagara-on-the-Lake), your collection on Saturday and/or Sunday will be delayed by one day. Lincoln seeks input on digital redevelopment The Town of Lincoln is undergoing a website redevelopment and is inviting community members to share what they would like to see in a redesigned municipal website.

The Town is working to improve this important communications tool and virtual gateway for Lincoln. Town officials want to hear from the community about how the website can better serve residents, visitors, businesses, and stakeholders.

The Town would like to enhance this online resource to be engaging, provide additional services online and, more importantly, expand our customer experience.

Province ups ante for McNally House “The increase in staffing needs, infection control measures and the impact on our ability to raise funds during the pandemic have all made these last twenty months very difficult. This one-time funding will enable McNally House to continue to provide high-quality compassionate care to meet the needs of our residents, their families, caregivers and those in our community who seek grief and bereavement supports.”

Hospice palliative care plays a vital role in Ontario’s health care system, providing people with additional options for high-quality end-of-life care outside of hospitals.

This year the government is investing up to $23 million in eligible hospice residences across the province as part its comprehensive plan to end hallway health care, ensuring that people can access high-quality care in the right settings now and in the future funding will be used to address additional costs associated with COVID-19, including the procurement of personal protective equipment.

The Ontario government upped its contribution to support McNally House Hospice in providing compassionate end-of-life services and care to people and their loved ones in West Niagara to $285,000 last week.

“Having recently introduced and seen the passage of the Compassionate Care Act, I have long been a passionate advocate of hospice care in Niagara and across the province,” said Sam Oosterhoff, Niagara West MPP. “This new support reaffirms our government’s commitment to high-quality palliative care in our region and the extraordinary work of the leadership and frontline team at McNally House.”

Pamela Blackwood, executive director of McNally House Hospice, said the funds could not have come at a better time.

“We are grateful to the government for addressing the unique financial pressure created by the COVID-19 pandemic, many of which will be ongoing,” said Blackwood.

BOYCHUK, William (Bill)

Bill passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 96 years of age, predeceased by his loving wife Pauline, in 2009. He was the beloved father of Irene (husband Donald Guloien and their children Nels and Perry) and Bob (wife Dawn Eden and their children Noah and Nyah). Bill was born in Czerniatyn, Ukraine and was a WWII veteran eventually making his way to Canada in 1951. Bill considered himself a very lucky man and thought Canada in general, and Grimsby in particular, were the best places on earth. Bill started with virtually nothing, worked hard his entire life and was very proud of everything he, Pauline, and their children and grandchildren accomplished. He was very knowledgeable about history, politics, and global affairs and was a big fan of CNN and the New York Times. He also loved watching wrestling. He was a passionate gardener, committed to a healthy lifestyle and organic food long before it became popular.

Until very recently, he spent three hours a day at the local YMCA doing his fitness routine and swimming. He was an incredibly curious person and many of his favourite memories were from his travels around the world, which recently Turkey, Spain, Morocco, Cuba, Israel, Costa Rica, among others. He lived a fine life and while he looked forward to age 100, achieving 96 years in almost perfect health is cause for celebration not sadness. He loved his family dearly and was deeply loved and admired in return. We’ll miss you Bill. You were amazing! RUMPH, Lammie On Friday, December 10, 2021, at the age of 93, Lammie Rumph (nee Steenbergen) was received into the loving arms of Jesus. Beloved wife of Henry + (2019) for 70 years.

Lammie Rumph was the 6th child (of 12) born to Hendrik Jan and Margje Steenbergen.

She arrived in this world on September 25, 1928. Lammie married Henry on August 29, 1948. They both came from the town of Koekange, in Drenthe, the Netherlands. They left for Canada in September, 1948. They arrived in Quebec and spent the first 2 years in eastern Ontario before they moved to the Drayton/Moorefield area. Mom and Dad farmed there for 22 years before they moved to Grimsby in 1972. Mom spent a lot of time gardening and keeping the lawns in great shape. She enjoyed getting out for her daily walks and bike rides. Mom sewed most of our clothes when we were kids and kept on sewing all kinds of outfits for kids in need till she was 92. She sewed many quilts that were given to the grand and great-grandkids for their 12th birthday. Mom became an avid golfer in the 1980’s. Her last year of golfing was 2019. She loved golfing with the ladies group at Sawmill every Tuesday morning and again on Thursdays with many of the friends she made there over the years.

She would play golf with her kids and grandkids, sometimes up to 3 times a day, at Chesley Lake Camp where we spent our family week every year. Mom and dad had 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys. They taught us all to seek the Lord in all things and were a wonderful example to us all. There have been a total of 119 children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. There have been good times and sad times in their lives. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have passed on before them. We thank the Lord for our Mom, our Gramma and our Oma. We will miss her immensely but we thank the Lord for blessing her life and are happy for her, that she is in the arms of our Lord and Savior.

Bus service will be costly The threat of losing the GO station cannot be underestimated but there are economic realities to Grimsby getting on the Niagara Transit bus on Monday night.

It can be 100 per cent guaranteed the same people who lined up to say “sure, let’s get this done” when it comes to one regional transit system will be in the same line to tell members of council they are nuts for escalating taxes.

Coun. Dave Sharpe was on point in his comments Monday.

He was the lone vote of dissent.

Concern and awareness are key points, but Coun. Dorothy Bothwell was also correct when she noted the good significantly outweighs the bad. Of note, there is little by way of projection when it comes to future cost. How the financing is rolled out has changed a great deal, so nailing down cost is not crystal clear, but it will cost...a lot, but at least you can take the bus to the bank to withdraw your tax payment. Parade organizers get it done A tip o’ the cap to the volunteers and organizers of the Smithville Santa Claus Parade who stuck with it and closed the deal on Sunday evening.

Saturday, as you may recall, was pretty blustery.

There were pockets which did not see too much of a wind issue, but anything above the escarpment and east of Beamsville sure did.

With the parade shifting from Saturday to Sunday, yes, some floats were lost due to conflict (and likely some could not follow through with their ticketed tour time). Another issue aside from Saturday’s weather is the new Sunday time overlapped the Hamilton’s Grey Cup appearance, which could have affected some as well.

West Lincoln Firefighters report they had an excellent response from the community with more than $1,100 coming via cash donations for West Lincoln Community Care’s Toonie Toy Drive program with strong food donations as well.

That spirit of giving is a big part of the Christmas season. As noted last week with Grimsby’s event, it was evident that residents needed a reason to get out and do something, so West Lincoln’s event filled that need.

Monday was a shining example residents can turn to - as I will - when they ask the proverbial question, “What happened to Dave Kadwell?”

MIKE WILLISCRAFT Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had several inquiries and calls of concern regarding hunters sitting in boats just off shore and firing their guns at ducks along the shoreline.

Now, we’re not talking out along the Department of National Defence gun range (where the shore is not populated). We’re talking about just off Murray Street Park in the middle of town.

Anyone who hears that, typically, would do a full stop and ask, “What’s with that?”

Nothing about it sounds safe. In 27 years of covering Grimsby issues, I have never heard of this occurrence one time, let alone several in the span of a couple of weeks.

There was quite a bit of online chatter about it, both from residents asking WTH (what the heck...and I paraphrase)? One might think town council would want to get right on top of this seemingly new phenomenon and see if they could do anything to protect its citizens from what surely seems like an accident waiting to happen.

BUT, this is Grimsby council we’re talking about, so expect next to nothing and you

can still be disappointed.

Coun. Lianne Vardy tabled a Notice of Motion and asked procedure be waived - which needs a 2/3s majority vote - so the matter could be discussed at the same meeting instead of putting the matter on hold until the following meeting.

The king of misinformation - that would be Coun.

Randy Vaine for those who have not been following along - suggested the Town had no jurisdiction. Even if that were true, it would not eliminate the need for council to review the situation, fire off a letter of concern, or, basically, do even one small thing to fake acting in the best interests of residents.

But no. After Mayor Jeff Jordan noted he had looked into a couple of things – as would any normal elected official who had become aware guns were being pointed toward populated areas in their town – Coun. Kevin Ritchie piped up noting his concern with the possibility Jordan knew about Vardy’s NoM, not mentioning the core concern about gun play along the shoreline at all.

Now, I mention Kadwell as many looked at him as a lone voice of reason for many years, including me.

Does he vote in support of getting this matter on the table? No, he votes with his ride-or-die buddies - Ritchie/ Vaine/Dunstall - for a 5-4 result (Coun. Dave Sharpe broke from the 5), which killed the motion since six votes to were needed to get two-thirds. It’s just another example of where a common sense solution was evident, but it was somehow elusive.

Nurses and doctors are indeed heroes. Man-

datory vaccination for health care providers, and in other workplaces, is also aimed at protecting the health and safety of other employees and the community.

Mandatory vaccinations are not novel.

There are vaccinations required for children to attend school. Nurses are required to have vaccinations prior to being able to practice nursing. The efforts of the various levels of government and of

People have not lost their privacy. People have a right to choose.

You can get vaccinated and disclose your medical status and keep your job and attend the places that require vaccinations, or not. Life is full of choices. Choices come with various consequences, including social ones and financial ones.

Why does everyone opposed to the vaccination mandate raise only one element of the Charter of Rights and

The Charter of Rights and Freedoms includes consideration of the purpose of such restrictions, including whether or not such restrictions are justified for the greater good of all.

I would suggest that restrictions put in place to protect society as a whole, would be justified in a free and democratic society.

We are in this together. Let’s start behaving that way.
