Heavy rain sequel not one Lincoln wanted to see

Splash down!

Daxel Davidson, 5, gets a cool blast to help beat the heat at the Grimsby Peach King Centre splash pad with his big sister Avery, 9. While many in the area got their fill of the wet stuff on Sunday, many took advantage of Saturday’s sun to cool off. Loree - Photo

By Mike Williscraft NewsNow While this summer’s moviegoers may have enjoyed the blockbuster, Town of Lincoln has been dragged on its own odyssey in recent weeks. A second round of torrential rain in as many weeks pushed Town of Lincoln officials to declare a State of Emergency on Sunday night. “With more than 170 mm of rainfall in a single day, following two additional storms that each brought more than 100 mm of rain within the past week and a half, our community has been pushed beyond its limits. These are not ordinary weather events. They are extraordinary disasters,” said Lincoln CAO Mike Kirkopoulos. “No municipal infrastructure system is designed to withstand this volume of rainfall over such a short period of time. Despite significant investments in roads, stormwater systems, and critical infrastructure, the intensity and frequency of these storms have overwhelmed our community. Homes have been flooded, businesses have suffered extensive damage, roads have become impassable, and essential municipal infrastructure has sustained significant impacts.” In the first storm, King Street was a hotspot for flashfloods. The second round on Sunday brought wider impacts. See FLOOD, Page 3

FLOOD

The Town declared a State of Emergency one time in the past when several stretches of Lake Ontario shoreline collapsed in 2017. “We received almost 300 calls in the last 24 hours. Our first responders and public works staff were out all night,” said Paul Di Ianni, Lincoln’s director of communications. In a release, Mayor Sandra Easton said immediate action is needed. “The Town of Lincoln, like other municipalities across Niagara, is declaring a Significant Weather Event and calls on both the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada to formally recognize the severity of this disaster by declaring a state of emergency for Niagara, with particular attention to the extraordinary impacts experienced in the Town of Lincoln,” said Easton. Such recognition must be accompanied by immediate action. We urgently request emergency financial assistance for affected residents and businesses, as well as dedicated funding to help improve municipal infrastructure.”

From Page 1 “We are seeing it everywhere. , not just Beamsville which was impacted again along King street. We saw it in Jordan, Vineland and even a few calls in Campden,” said Kirkopoulos, “We have just signed and submitted an emergency declaration to the province. We are declaring a State of Emergency because it will allow us every available tool to help our community recover. It strengthens our ability to coordinate resources, advocate for provincial and federal assistance and pursue every opportunity to support our residents, businesses and municipality through the recovery process.” Again, with Sunday’s storm, a lengthy hydro outage exacerbated the flooding issue. “While it affected NPEI (Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc.), it was a Hydro One outage that led to it and that created a worse situation with no sump pumps working for nearly six hours. This caused significantly more flooding,” said Kirkopoulos.

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at Hospice Niagara on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in his 85th year, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband and best friend of Jackie (née Marshall) for almost 60 years. Loving father of Sandra Andrews (Nathan). Proud and devoted grandfather of Bethany and Sydney. Much-loved brother of Colin (Eileen) and brother-in-law of David Marshall. Susanne was the loving daughter of Shirley and the late Keith Latchford, and a much-loved sister to David (Donna) Latchford, Kathy (Tennessee) Propedo, and Janet (Mitch) Fraser. She was the sister-in-law of Wes (Carolyn) Hutchings, JoAnn Hutchings, and Russ (Natasha) Hutchings.

special place in her heart.

Her nephews and nieces—Ethan, Elise, Olivia, Kendall, Shelby, Madison, Nelson, AJ, Taylor, Blake, Megan, and Ally—and her step-nephew and step-nieces, Carly, Dave, and Alana, held a

Susanne will be lovingly remembered by extended family members, many friends, colleagues, and former patients. Her generosity, kindness, and genuine interest in everyone she met will be sadly missed. She was a graduate of the Dental Hygiene program at Erie Community College and the Restorative Dental Hygiene program at George Brown College. She spent 30 years providing care as a Registered Restorative Dental Hygienist at practices in Grimsby. One of her proudest accomplishments was the establishment of the Dental Hygiene Team, a mobile service providing patient-focused, gentle, and respectful care directly to residents in 26 long-term care settings from Niagara to the GTA. For this, she was the recipient of the Fran Richardson Leadership Development Award from the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario. Susanne also created the not-for-profit service, Brushed Aside, which provides access to dental care and dentures for low-income individuals in need of treatment, with Community Care as the lead agency, working with five partners across Niagara. Susanne had a deep love for her community and a generous spirit that inspired her lifelong commitment to volunteering and helping others. She was also an advocate for spreading awareness of radon as the leading risk factor for lung cancer in people who don’t smoke. She found joy in the simple things and was always looking for ways to bring people together—whether she was riding her bike through the neighbourhood, fostering kittens and lovingly finding them forever homes, or creating the neighbourhood “Bone Barn” for local dogs. Her kindness and sense of fun were felt by all, especially the children who eagerly looked forward to the freezies she handed out on warm days. Susanne never needed a reason to celebrate and delighted in making every occasion, big or small, feel special. She also loved being part of her Ti-Cat family and cherished the excitement, camaraderie, and memories made while attending games. Susanne cherished spa days and watching romantic comedies with her girls, and treasured quiet moments birdwatching with her grandchildren. Her warmth, generosity, and ability to create joy will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many healthcare professionals who supported Susanne throughout her journey, including Dr. Leighl, Dr. Juergens, and Dr. Greenspoon. We are especially thankful to Dr. Denise Marshall, Kathy Propedo, Dr. Mat Noble Wohlgemut, Dr. Natalie Ramsay, and Nurses Amanda and Susan from the West Niagara Palliative Care Team for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Susanne in her final days. Susanne touched many lives. She loved deeply and was deeply loved. Her motto in life was this: “Love makes everything right.” A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by remarks at 4:00 p.m. at Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery (3210 Staff Ave., Jordan, ON L0R 1S0). If desired, the family gratefully welcomes donations in her memory to McNally House Hospice in Grimsby, Ronald McDonald House South Central Ontario, or to the lung cancer research of Dr. Rosalyn Juergens through Hamilton Health Sciences in partnership with McMaster University.

OBITUARIES

Benedict, Ken

With profound sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Ken Benedict, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and cherished friend. His loss came quickly and unexpectedly, leaving a deep ache in the hearts of all who loved him. Ken was the beloved husband and best friend of Jessie for 57 wonderful years. Together they built a life filled with loyalty, laughter, and unwavering companionship. As a father, Ken was a steady, loving presence in the lives of Sean and Mark. He was their guide, their encourager, and their quiet source of strength. Ken taught his boys through example — showing them how to work hard, treat people kindly, and face life with humour and resilience. He celebrated their successes, supported them through challenges, and always made sure they knew how deeply proud he was of them. Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, or giving one of his signature mischievous smiles, Ken created a foundation of love and trust that shaped the men they became. His relationship with Sean and Mark was one of deep respect, genuine friendship, and unwavering devotion. As a grandfather to Emma and Christina, Ken brought joy, encouragement, and a playful humour — always with a sparkle of mischief — that made every moment brighter. Ken cherished his family above all else. He had a remarkable sense of humour, a grateful heart, and a kindness that touched everyone he met. He was the type of person who made people feel welcome, valued, and at ease — whether through a warm smile, a thoughtful gesture, or a perfectly timed joke that revealed that familiar twinkle in his eye. A significant part of Ken’s life was spent with his Silverdale Gun Club family, a community he treasured deeply. Silverdale was more than a hobby or pastime for Ken — it was a place where he found camaraderie, purpose, and genuine friendship. He spoke often of the people there, the laughter shared, and the sense of belonging that meant so much to him. The club was a second home, and the friendships he built there enriched his life in countless ways. In his final days, Ken received caring support from staff at Hamilton General Hospital and West Lincoln Memorial Hospital. The family wishes to acknowledge their kindness. A special thank‑you is extended to Melanie, Ken’s nurse at West Lincoln, whose gentle presence ensured he was treated with dignity and love. As per Ken’s wishes, he has been cremated. A private family service will be held to honour his memory and celebrate the life of a man who gave so much of himself to others. Ken will be remembered for his warmth, his humour, his gratitude, his sparkle of mischief, and the quiet strength he carried throughout his life. His absence is felt profoundly, and his memory will be held close by all who knew him.

NPEI support

Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc. (NPEI) kicked off a new sponsorship program with a $14,000 donation to Twp. of West Lincoln. The donations - $7,000 for Caistorville Library children’s programming and $7,000 for initiatives at the Community Centre - are part of NPEI’s ongoing support of its member municipalities, said board member and West Lincoln Coun. Mike Rehner. On hand for the presentation were: (L to R) Rehner; Cynthia Summers director community and protective services; Sue Forcier, NPEI VP communications marketing and public affairs; Mayor Cheryl Ganann; DJ Brooks, manager of town services for West Lincoln, and; Igor Rusic, NPEI president and CEO.

Check with WNSS Over the last week better than two dozen phone calls and emails were received asking why we had not published a salute to West Niagara Secondary School grads. The response was consistent, ask the school. When the previous principal decided - DSBN said it was the local principal’s decision - he no longer wanted one done when the new school opened, there were no reasons offered and I didn’t ask. It’s not exactly like we’re at the top of WNSS’s or DSBN’s Christmas list after the whole build/site remediation spending debacle. The consensus from callers, it’s too bad the kids and families pay. M.W.

Enough with the rain I am in no way saying glare caused the traffic mishap at King and Ontario in Beamsville last week but - as soon as I saw the information from the Niagara Regional Police - I had to wonder. Two times in my decades of driving through that intersection I have been eastbound on King and making a left onto Ontario when glare blinded my whole windshield. The car’s visor, sunglasses and a raised hand to block the sun any way possible did nothing to remedy the situation. The problem was it was not until I turned into the oncoming lane that all vision was blown away. it was all about angles and timing and timing was bad. One time I knew there was nobody crossing so took my best guess and proceeded through as I knew there was oncoming traffic. The other time I saw people on the corner, but I did not know which street they were planning to cross. Would they stay put? Would they cross King or would they proceed and cross Ontario. Turned out, they crossed Ontario. When I started to turn, the two people were stationary. As I was not sure since I could no longer see them, I was able to stop in the oncoming lane roll my window down, stick my head out and see them coming across. Then they cleared, I proceeded, but

MIKE WILLISCRAFT this was split second stuff. The sun can be brutal at that intersection at very particular times of the morning, so proceed with caution if rolling through there any morning. Now, on the rain, flooding and power outages.... yikes! Well over 40 location washouts of laneways, shoulders and roadways aside from scores of homes flooding both from the excess rainfall and the extended power outage knocking out sump pumps in many homes. Town of Lincoln joined its easterly neighbour, St. Catharines, in declaring a State of Emergency due to the impact of Sunday’s storm. Unless you saw it or heard a story first hand, it is really tough to comprehend the amount of water which flowed through Lincoln and - to a slightly lesser degree the second time around - Grimsby. Hearing some of these stories, I flashed back to a Niagara Peninsula Conser-

vation Authority meeting dealing with floodplain mapping. There was a handful of people, seven or eight, property owners there. If there were another floodplain meeting tomorrow it would have to be held at the West Niagara fairgrounds because it would be packed. There is a ton of water passing through Grimsby and Lincoln every single day in extensive underground tributaries to Lake Ontario. When we get the kind of rainfall we’ve had - and I am only talking one of the big storms, those tributaries get back up and when that happens the water that wants to flow into them stays above the ground and heads down a path of least resistance and that’s when you see more non-traditional locations under heavy water flow like on Sunday. The natural system is there to channel a great deal of water, but there has been nothing “normal” about the last couple of weeks. While that is one issue, Hydro One needs to get its act together both on its system and its repair time. Grimsby is very lucky. They had 2,000 customers north of the QEW have power go down due to Hydro One issues, but they acted quickly to reroute supply getting power restored in just over 90 minutes.
