Bell boxes get new, artistic facelift for Grimsby 100th

By Mike Williscraft NewsNow Who knew sketching bunnies observed running about in a childhood Grimsby backyard could lead to a career in the arts and owning an art gallery?

Emily May Brown, that’s who.

Brown is one of eight artists who area residents may have spotted last week creating art around town as part of a Bell Box Murals Program, run as part of Grimsby’s 100th anniversary projects.

Artists had to apply to the program with eight being chosen. They began painting July 25 and will complete their murals by Aug. 8.

For Brown, her mural idea was a natural for the community she grew up in.

“I named my piece “House Party”, and I’ve transformed my Bell Box into a house with raccoons and bunnies hanging out in and around it,” said Brown.

“This juxtaposition of nature and human dwellings has become a staple in my work, which was influenced by my hometown where we were lucky to live in a town full of nature spaces and wildlife. Drawing the bunnies I would see in my backyard in Grimsby was the start of all the animals that make up my visual style now.”

While Brown is very familiar with the Bell Box Program having created several around Toronto, where she lives now, she operates her own gallery.

“I now own and operate Northern Contemporary, a gallery located in Toronto where we focus on street art, illustration, figurative, pop art, and experimental work,” said Brown.

“We showcase local artists as well as bringing in international ones. On top of original art, we also run a fine art print shop as well as workshops and classes.”

Shot fired during Gateway gas station robbery demanding cash.

Two of the suspects were armed, one with a pistol and the other with “bear spray”.

The suspects stole cash and cigarettes.

The employee feared for their life and attempted to run from the store.

The suspect armed with the pistol, targeted the employee and fired one shot at them. The shot missed the employee striking a wall. The employee was not physically injured.

Grimsby 100th party reset for downtown Plans were set for Grimsby 100 celebrations at Southward Park in late September, but a late-arriving grant has paved the way for a reset on the event.

The grant is part of a postCOVID revitalization program offered by the federal government’s Re-Opening Fund, with a proviso funds get channelled into downtown cores.

“We had applied for the grant some time ago and were not sure if it would arrive, so we had proceeded with some of the plans,” said Trevor Ruzylo, recreation supervisor, community development.

“Grants like this are greatly appreciated, so we’re doing what we need to do to capitalize on it coming through.”

To do that, the Sept. 24 event shifts to downtown.

Among the features planned at this point: • Main stage for local acts and entertainment • Grimsby 100 Birthday Cake • Live mural painting by local artists • Local business tents and activations • Juried art show during Grimsby Arts Walk • “Why I Love Grimsby” community blackboard • GRIMSBY sign and photo op • Legacy plaque unveiling • Laser Show and low level pyrotechnics • Children’s entertainment and pop up activations, and, • Downtown restaurants will have the opportunity to extend their patios.

The entire celebration will now connect with the inaugural Grimsby Arts Walk planned for the same day.

“Everything is developing and coming together quickly, so we’ll have more to highlight for the community in the next week or so. It will be an exciting event,” said Ruzylo.

Grimsby Farmers’ Market to make Main Street return Grimsby Farmers’ Market is expected to make a return to Main Street on Thursday, Sept. 1 after more than two years at the Grimsby Peach King Centre.

The market shifted from Main to PKC in 2020 with the onset of COVID-19 and all the restrictions which came with its impact.

“The Grimsby Farmers’ Market has confirmed that they would be prepared to return to the Downtown Grimsby location starting September 1st 2022,” states a report submitted to council.

Council’s vote came after press time Tuesday.

However, the recommendation was expected to be approved.

“The downtown business community will be happy to see the market return,” said Grimsby Downtown Improvement Area board president Mike Williscraft.

“The market has always been a unique attraction and the community as a whole missed having it on Main Street. It will be great to see.”

The market will run Thursdays from 3-7 p.m, Sept. 1-Oct. 6.

Economy, Earth needs to adapt or die I am not writing this to start a panic, but simply to give you some information, so don’t run screaming down the street.

When I was a small child riding on a streetcar, I asked my mother “What is wrong with that man?”

He had a nice face, but it was a mass of pockmarks. She told me that he had recovered from a nasty disease called smallpox which left the person’s face and body scarred like that.

She added, “That’s why before you go to school, you are going to be vaccinated against smallpox.”

I wonder if that vaccine is still lingering in my body, and will protect me against monkeypox. Probably not.

As of today, July 31st 2022 there are 803 cases of monkeypox in Canada. There

Through exchange of bodily fluids (does that sound familiar) i.e. kissing and sex.

Also coughing, sneezing, and handling objects that have been touched by an infected person.

Remember how the U.S. government sent infected blankets to the annoying Indians to deplete their population? This is much worse than COVID, so we want to stamp it out quickly, with no nonsense.

Monkeypox is very much like smallpox which, according to WHO (World Health Organization) was wiped out in 1980.

Apparently, the decision was made to isolate the virus, but not destroy it. I always thought that was a mistake.

Grimsby Beach residents hosted a fundraising concert, complete with silent auction, in support of Grimsby Wildlife Care Centre on Sunday afternoon raising $2,500 in the process. WCC is solely community driven, not receiving any government funding. WCC provides care for all small mammals - fox, skunk, opossum, groundhogs, squirrels and chipmunks, cottontails, porcupine and beaver and releases them back into the wild. Among those on hand were (L to R) Angela Coric, WCC executive director Cara Contardi, an authorized wildlife custodian, and; Tina Ziobakas.

Mark Radey, who coordinated the event noted Reg Freake and his wife, Ruth Kelly, led the way with donations with great support from downtown Grimsby merchants.

SCOTT, James Clair

It is with a sad heart that the Scott family announces the passing of James Clair Scott on Sunday, July 31st at the age of 89. Jim was the son of James and Clara Scott and the dear brother of Ruby, and he was the beloved husband of Jennifer for over 67 years. They met in Grimsby High School and lived in the Grimsby and Winona area all of that time, except for the few times they would sneak away to Florida in the winter months after they had retired from their Rice Monuments business in Winona. Jim was a loving father to his four children, James Wm., Heather and her husband Alan; Andrew; and Stephen and his wife Anne. He was also very pleased to be the grandfather of Greg, Becky, Scott, Evan, Sebastian and Adrienne and his great grandchildren Gavin and Morgan, and Chloe, Clair and Liliana.

Jim had a great sense of humour and was beloved by all his friends. He was a very active member of the Grimsby Optimist Club for many years, and prior to working for himself, he had worked for Williamson Printing Materials for many years. Many of the residents of Maplecrest Retirement Home, where he and Jennifer have been living for the past four years, will miss his ready humour, especially before meal times and ‘Happy Hour’.

As per Jim’s wishes, private cremation has taken place and burial will be at Queen’s Lawn Cemetery later this month after his family and friends have gathered to remember a good life, well lived. It’s the dog days...

It’s summer, many are distracted by far more things than reading these mindless ramblings, so let’s do a dog-days-of-summerstyle column in a dog’s breakfast format - a little bit of everything.

First, an apology for the Gemmills and Bucatarus for mixing up their homes in the July 21 coverage.

Normally I would not be that boneheaded but the fates played me. Not as an excuse, but the list I received from the Grimsby Garden Club only had Bill and Sue Gemmill’s address on Nelles Road South. So, when I pulled up and saw the signs and scores of people milling about I knew I was in the right spot...sort of. Turned out there were two Nelles Road homes on the garden tour. Anyway, just wanted to note that the lovely water feature on the front of the July 21 edition was that of Ruxandra and Alex Bucataru.

Consider me slapped with a wet noodle! ******* The RCMP Musical Ride will be returning to Niagara West on Thursday, Sept.

15 at West Niagara Fairgrounds.

The cost for tickets is $10.

A troop of 32 scarlet coated “Mounties” on majestic black horses present a 30 minute show of intricate figures and cavalry drills choreographed to music.

Gates open at 5 p.m. The event starts at 7 p.m.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT ******* If you happened to miss the story on Page 5, it will be great to see the Grimsby Farmers Market return to Main Street after a twoyear-plus COVID-induced run at the Peach King Centre.

As of press time, council still had to pass the formal paperwork and such, but it seems unlikely something would go awry - one never knows.

Aside from being an event which draws visitors through downtown, the market is a social occasion unto itself. Residents have missed it being on Main, which adds a lot to the event atmosphere, so it will be a welcome step on the “return to normal”. ******* The municipal election, yes, it’s coming Oct. 24. I had three people in my office just Tuesday telling me they are running - two for Grimsby councillor spots, one mayoral in Lincoln.

Again, which seems to be a bit of a tradition of sorts, many (many) requests have

been coming in asking me to run for something. Won’t happen, for a variety or reasons, with the main one being I would not possibly have time to do a proper job as an elected official and run this little rag.

I appreciate the sentiment behind the comments just the same.

We are down to 81 days to election day. Some are excited, but more should be nervous. Grimsby has shown a lot of folks just what can happen if you don’t choose wisely.

Simply, do your homework. I have never been one to tell anyone who to vote for on any political level and I do not intend to start now. I have covered our local councils the best way I know how. if you disagree with any offerings, please feel free to ignore. Take the time to watch some of the council meetings in the grimsby.ca archive - or any other council, too. No doubt, Grimsby has dominated much of the council space with head-scratcher after head scratcher and I do apologize to readers in Lincoln and West Lincoln for not having the means to dedicate time, space and writing to your councils as I really believe they deserved. That is all about ad revenue and what I can afford while attempting to keep this thing floating.

We will survive, but we’ve had to withstand a lot of financial pain. Watch for our mayoral candidate podcasts. That will be fun.
