Province pitched on escarpment crossing
By Mike Williscraft NewsNow
Niagara West officials took another kick at the escarpment crossing can on Mondaymeeting with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation officials.
The meeting took place at the 2023 AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) conference in London.
“Our three West Niagara council representatives have met several times with the Ministry of Transportation regarding a safe and efficient Niagara escarpment crossing and we were pleased to once again discuss with ministry officials the importance of this crossing, as it pertains to the Greater Golden
Horseshoe 2051 Transportation Plan,” said Niagara West team leader, West Lincoln Mayor Cheryl Ganann.
Including the crossing in the 2051 plan and including widening the QEW from Fruitland Road to Hwy. 406 as well, were keys “asks”.
“Smithville’s expansion, Lincoln’s needs and ongoing safety concerns were also
part of the conversation,” said Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan.
“I further discussed safety and congestion as well as the potential of an environmentally friendly tunnel option. In my opinion, the tunnel option should be seriously considered given its advantages in safety, longevity and minimizing environmental impact. It
would be a project that would benefit all of Niagara for generations.”
Lincoln Mayor Sandra Easton agreed.
“Provincial funding for this project will be most welcome to alleviate unnecessary truck traffic through core areas of our communities while permitting goods movement to support the local economy,” said Easton.

Letter to the Editor Lower limit on Roberts creates more serious situation
Dear Editor, Your editorial regarding speeding on sidestreets was spot on.
Concerning the speed reduction to 40 kph from 50 kph on Roberts is a fallacy move that will create a more dangerous situation.
Drivers will go where speed limits are higher.
The adjacent street to
Roberts is Garden Avenue. Roberts is wider, has sidewalks and only a few connecting driveways, limited parking and better sight lines.
Garden is much narrower, no sidewalks, there are many more homes along Garden and all have driveways connecting to the avenue. Its a very congest-
ed and busy street with ditches that reduce the driving lanes further.
Putting a lower legal limit on Roberts will only drive traffic to Garden with the higher legal limit. By singling out Roberts, council has created a bigger safety issue than what it was trying to prevent.
We can have any ar-
bitrary speed limit we want but, if its not enforced, it’s pointless and well intentioned bylaws will actually create more danger.
Where is Reg. Coun. Seaborn on wrangling us help on better enforcement and sidewalks on regional roads?

Together, they proudly raised two sons, Geoffrey (who predeceased his father in 2019) and Jason, who just 6 years ago made George and Jan grandparents to their precious granddaughter Anya Honour, together with Sharon Hollender. Meghan Wills held a special place in George’s heart.
Georgie was the loving, much loved brother and dear friend of Carol Ann and special brother-in-law of her husband Alf Smith. George treasured his relationships with their sons Adam and Eric and their wives Alanna and Shannon and he nurtured special bonds with his great nephews, Austin and Jackson. George was a caring brother-in-law of Robin McMillan and Uncle to his children, Rory, Faith, and Holly. He leaves behind many cousins of both his and Jan’s in Canada and the U.S. He was predeceased by his parents George P. and Ethel Takach (2001 and 2000).
George was a proud and respected retired employee of more than 40 years at Dofasco, Hamilton. Paramount in George’s life was his care, concern and service for others. He volunteered for many years at GBF, the Lions Club, Shamrock Bingo Club, their Jordan Condo Association, BICR Niagara. In July, just prior to his illness, George was honoured by Canadian Blood Services after donating his 100th pint of blood. He was honoured to be a Eucharistic minister and frequent crucifer at Star of the Sea R.C. Church. George will be missed for his smile and humour (and love of cars!) by not only his family, but his many friends- both old and new, his colleagues, fellow parishioners, and multiple acquaintances, whose lives he touched.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be held at Star of the Sea R.C. Church, St. Catharines (34 Elgin St, St.) on Wednesday, August 30th, 2023 at 11a.m., followed immediately by private family Inurnment. After Mass, family and friends are invited to proceed to Tallman Funeral Home, Vineland (3277 King St.), to share memories and light refreshments. If you wish, in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in George’s name could be made to Grimsby Benevolent Fund, Canadian Red Cross, or charity of your choice.
“There’s a special new angel in Heaven. A good man gone too soon.”

Hug somebody today
There is some logical follow up on the traffic issue piece from last week and a few other matters which do and will need attention, but, honestly, my mind is stuck like a skipping record.
Yesterday, my brother called to ask if I had been speaking to our mom. I had not spoken to her since the prior weekend.
He said the result of her liver biopsy returned positive, malignant growth, same strain as her pancreatic cancer from 40 years ago.
She has had ongoing poor health after having a lemon-sized tumor removed along with 90 per cent of her pancreas - her digestive tract had to be rebuilt as well.
She didn’t complain then and she’s not complaining now.
90 and still rockin!
What better way for someone to enter their 90s than Grimsby’s Kit Dickenson chose, zip lining over Niagara Falls. Her grandchild and great grandchildren were on hand to see Kit in action. Way to go, Kit!
If the Province wants infrastructure...
A key message from Premier Doug Ford at this past weekend’s Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference was infrastructure is needed to keep Ontario’s record growth flowing.
For Niagara, the two key projects which could power trade is the long-awaited escarpment crossing - which should be at Bartlett Road - and a Mid-Peninsula route connecting Fort Erie to the 403 west of Hamilton.
These arteries would take pressure off the QEW and improve trucking routes to and from the U.S. at the point in our country’s border which needs it most. It is a no-brainer in terms of economic planning. That said, it would cost many billions and take 20 years, but if it’s needed now, that pressure will only increase. Get ’er done. M.W.
My mother is unfailingly selfless - always has been.
I knew why she had not called to tell me anything, and this was confirmed Monday night when I called her.
“Why are you calling me on a deadline Monday?” were her first words.
Typically, the world stops on Mondays and Tuesdays for newspaper production. Anyone who knows me knows this.
Through my years of skilled journalism training, I always attempt to extract the truth when I get an inkling of a problem. I started by telling
Mom I had not talked to my brother. This allows me to hear her version of the story and I can mentally compare notes to what my brother was told, because there is always more.
For example, she found out in late July when her doctor called. She mentioned he followed up Aug. 4 because he was surprised the cancer clinic had not called to arrange an appointment by that time, so it had been 10 days to two weeks then.
So I confirmed she had known about a month and asked the obligatory question, why had she not called to tell anyone.
“I didn’t want to be a bother.”
I am not one to use the word or feeling of hate. There are precious few things in this world I have the time to hate, but that phrase is one of them.
The psychologist in me says she doesn’t really believe that but uses it to perpetuate our family’s trait of ignoring emotional
issues and come up with any possible excuse to avoid dealing with things - and. yes, I fit that bill 100 per cent.
We spent about 90 minutes on the phone. I will finish this deadline and head to London tonight for a visit. She is in good spirits, but needs to get started on these monthly shots to slow the tumor’s growth.
My mom used to be 5’9” with an athletic build. Now she is 86 years old and about 5’ and considerably frail.
Now, good reader, I don’t note a word of this seeking sympathy or solace. I do so to encourage everyone out there in reader land to take a moment, two minutes, to give any loves in your lives a quick call to let them know you are thinking about them. If they are close to you, give them a hug.
Like a lot of peopleand I am no different than millions of others - who sees this in front of them, I realize how many opportunities were wasted those many times I thought “Geez, I should pop over to London and get Mom out for lunch or something.” Paused. Then went back to work.
Unlike with my Dad who died suddenly when I was 13, I can make up some time with my Mom and fully intend to do so. It is a luxury life does not always afford.

Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing of Ontario Steve Clark followed through on announcing when regional facilitators would be installed.
Clark told those AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) in London on Tuesday, Niagara’s facilitator would be in place by Sept. 11. The facilitator will be tasked with assessing the local governance structures in Niagara to ensure they are prepared to support future growth and meet the needs of their residents, particularly when it comes to building homes and housing-enabling infrastructure.
