I ate a pear the other morning. It was a little hard, and tasteless. The sticker on it said it was a “Gaucho” from Ar gentina. I couldn’t help grumbling to myself “Why the heck am I eating a pear from South America?” No one asked the peo ple who lived here. Farming was hard work for our neighbours who had real orchards with rows of trees that had to be tended regularly. Living with fruit trees was wonderful. I especially loved my pear tree. I made pear pies and froze them to enjoy in the win ter. I made pear and gin ger jam, made from my mother’s recipe with little chunks of crystallized gin ger.So why am I eating a tasteless pear from South America? How long was it on the road before I got it? How much fossil fuel went into that journey? The land I’m sitting on this moment was once part of a fruit farm. Carloads of people came from the city in Blossom Time (May) to admire Grimsby’s gor geous orchards. Local businesses thrived. Under the paved parking lot out side my window there is still fertile soil, but it will never see the light of day again, will never produce any tasty, nutritious fruit. I don’t blame the fam ily who sold the original farmhouse here, but I do blame the politicians and developers who built over the fruit land.

Martha Woodland was appointed to serve on the library board in 1924. William Woodland was a manager with the E.L. Jennet Fruit Company and the Niagara Peninsula Growers Limited, a significant part of the main employer in the district, the propagation and export of tender fruit. At age 54, Mr. Woodland was one of the oldest Canadians to enlist as a soldier in the Canadian Army during the First World War. In 1911, Mr. Woodland like many Canadians of the period went west to find his fortune in Winnipeg to work as a manager in the Winnipeg Street Commission, then run by former Beamsville resident Walter F. Tallman, a prominent figure in Manitoba at the time.
The house is believed to have been built by David Davis, a well-known local contractor and house builder who also served as a magistrate, Justice of the Peace and an elective Reeve of the Village of Beamsville on six (6) occasions. The house is believed to have been built for his daughter, Mary A. Davis about 1898.

Typical of the style, it features a gable end roof, a near symmetrical façade, and rectangular openings with wood sash windows. Typical of second homes of pioneer families, the Joseph Tufford Homestead represent an attempt to emulate popular styles of residential architecture, utilizing materials such as wood, clary for brick and stone gathered from the immediate vicinity. The house is believed to be the oldest remining lakeside homes within the former Clinton Township. Additionally, the Joseph Tufford Homestead has historical value for its association with Conrad and Joseph and Tufford, and the Tufford family, who were among the earliest pioneer settlers to arrive in the present-day Town of Lincoln in 1798. The Tufford family were prominent in the early development of the Township and the present-day Town of Lincoln.

It is with a sad heart that the Scott family announces the passing of James Clair Scott on Sunday, July 31st at the age of 89. Jim was the son of the late James and Clara Scott, the dear brother of the late Ruby Scott, and he was the beloved husband of Jennifer for over 67 years. They met in Grimsby High School and lived in the Grimsby and Winona area all of that time, except for the few times they would sneak away to Florida in the winter months after they had retired from their Rice Monuments business in Winona. Jim was a loving father to his four children, James Wm., Heather (and her husband Alan), Andrew, and Stephen (and his wife Anne). He was also very pleased to be the grandfather of Greg, Becky, Scott, Evan, Sebastian and Adrienne and his great grandchildren, Gavin and Morgan, and Chloe, Clair, and Liliana. Jim had a great sense of hu mour and was an active member of the Grimsby Optimist Club for many years, and prior to working for himself he had worked for Williamson Printing Materials for twenty-six years. Many of the residents of Maplecrest Retirement Home, where he and Jennifer have been living for the past four years, will miss his ready humour, especially before meal times and ‘Happy Hour’. As per Jim’s wishes, private cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at the Grimsby Legion (233 Elizabeth Street) on Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 2 - 4 p.m. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Jim may do so to The Lung Association (https://www.lung.ca). DinaLuttjehuizenBouwina Passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2022. Predeceased in 2014 by her loving husband of 56 years, Gysbertus and in 2019 by her son John. Dina will be greatly missed by her children, Joanne Tessmer (Alan), Kevin Luttjehuizen (Linda), Cindy Luttjehuizen (Carl), her sister Jenny Bittner, her Grandchildren, Brenda McIntyre, Kris Tessmer (Janine), Skye Katsaros (Yannis), Kate Luttjehuizen as well as Great Grandchildren Chloe, Hudson, Koen, Quentin and her nieces and nephews. Originally from Groningen, Netherlands, her family immigrated to Oakville, Ontario, Canada when she was 12 years old. They later moved to Grimsby where she met the love of her life who lived just down the street from them. Dina and Bert married in 1957 and had 4 children together. In 1975 they founded Harmony House Jewellers in Grimsby, Hagersville Jewellers in 1980 and Dunnville Jewellers in 1985. Once they retired her oldest son John and his wife purchased the Hagersville store and youngest son Kevin and his wife purchased the Grimsby and Dunnville stores.Dinawas an amazing cook, baker, seamstress and worked extremely hard all her life whether it was at their business’s, raising her family or on the farm. She will be remembered for her strength, her smile and her love of animals. We would like to express our utmost love and appreciation to her palliative caregivers who helped make her wish of living her life in her own home until the end met. Henrietta, Thailee, Lynn, Hetty, Kate, Sabine and Michelle - words cannot express how thankful we are for the loving care and support you gave to our mother. You are all amazing!Wewould also like to thank Paul from St. Eliza beth’s. Mom’s face would always light up like a Christmas Tree when she saw you walking by the front window on your way in the house. She adored you! He recently celebrated his 90th birthday with his family. He was happy and healthy in recent years. No one expected his sudden death would gather us again for our final goodbyes. Predeceased by his beloved wife Gina (née Biscaro 1996) and infant daughter Elizabeth. Loving father of Donna Marie, Bruce (Leitha), Glen, Grant (Heval) and grandfather to Michael (Trish), James, Lexi, Jess, Adar and Ashti. Don was predeceased by his parents Donald and Mona (née Crozier) and survived by his siblings Bruce (JoAnne), and Heather. Don was a member of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment Army Cadets and then Army Reserve. When he turned 18 he became a member of the RCAF from 1950 to 1973 proudly serving as a pilot in Search and Rescue and Trans port squadrons, and as a pilot instructor. After retiring from the RCAF he worked for the DOT for 15 years and with ICAO for 4 years and trav elled with Gina. He volunteered at the Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and the Cana dian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. He will be remembered by all for his many tales and quirky sense of humour. He is missed by his siblings, children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. He loved to fly and now has his final set of wings. What you are holding in your mitts right now, good reader, is a little bit of Niagara West history. Granted, it took a bit of a perfect storm to get here but, nonetheless, here we are – 56 rock n roll pages. This is the biggest purely local community newspaper this area has ever seen and the largest I have everBackdone.inthe late 90s when Grimsby News was tak ing off like a rocket I did two 24-page sections in a week when we printed at CanWeb. Two things are a prime indication that that was a long time ago: A) We did ALL the production by hand still, cut and paste, baby. One section went on Monday, the second one Wednesday and; B) Then we all headed over to CanWeb to assist with inserting one section into the other. We were running 18,400 copies then. I think we got done about 12 a.m. and THEN I loaded up the car and headed out to deliver the Grimsby ru rals. We were a great team top to bottom. Good times! This time around, yes, it’s all paginated, but I also have roughly one-third of the staff I had then. So there was a lot of trade off time-wise.Thewhole scenario to arrive at the result you see is a bit of “be careful what you wish for”. I wasn’t really wishing, but last Friday I was hoping to get 3-4 more ads in to round things out. They arrived, all was great. Then my last round of emails, texts and phone calls proved to be the gift that kept on giving. So my publisher hat says, “Awesome, keep it rolling!” My editor hat says, “Hey, what about my space.” Almost always my edi tor hat prevails, we go up pages and get in everything we possibly can, but this week such a plan was just not physically possible. As I write this, we are still a few hours from press and a ton of work still needs to be powered through. What I would like you to recognize, good reader, is who the advertisers are in our pages. Please take the time to see who they are and what they have accom plished. You can tell how much you love these ramblings, or you can shred me with a fake social account, the fact remains (and always will) we are trying to help this community the best way I know completely at the whim of my dedicat ed and loyal advertisers. Everyone one of them know they could go to the corporate option and get an ad for a fraction of the cost. However, they also know you get what you pay for. NewsNow gets read ers and eyeballs get results. Those two facts have not changed since Day 1. The only problem I had this week was taking a guess at where the break ing point is in terms of production. With anything with this many pages we plan production. There was no way to do this as things just blew up. Two two-page spreads booked two days ahead of deadline - when does that ever happen...ever. One is stellar, two...I thought I was getting pranked. Then mix in a ton of late arriving bookings, ad proofs and camera ready art and it has made the last four days 18-hour affairs. We could have gone up another four pages and pumped in more copy, but we could not physi cally process the additional production, writing, editing time. The line had to be drawn on page count, fitting in what we needed.... and here we are. Long story short - we will be closing our office on Fridays for the rest of August because I cannot see a point where I can get a whole week off, so I’ll take a break in snippets. So Aug. 12, 19 and 26th you will see a “Closed for a holiday” sign on our door. Our regu lar 9-4 hours will be in play the other days. So, a heartfelt thanks to all those local businesses who keep our lights on. We appreciate it and I think the community does, too.
All community groups have had struggles with funding over the last two years, for FORT getting flooded out during last Thursday’s torrential rain does not help them any. The brand new tile floors were under three inches of water, necessitating sending kids home and closing the Grimsby location in the middle of summer. Two dehumidifiers are working overtime, but it is not known when they can re-open, if they will need a new floor or when it could get done.
