Advancing Council Priorities in 2021 and Beyond Lincoln Council has developed a set of priorities, or areas of focus for their current term. These are grouped by pillars that support & achieve Lincoln’s community vision of a place to grow, a place to prosper, a place to belong.

Welcoming

Connected

Vibrant

Resilient

Here are some updates on Town projects and initiatives that advance these priorities.

Welcoming Community To be a welcoming community for people, fresh ideas and businesses.

On the Path to Economic Recovery 2020 was an unprecedented year for economic development in Lincoln. The pandemic has hit many of our businesses hard, with public health restrictions in place and shopping behaviours changing significantly. Many of the Town’s original plans that were outlined in the Economic Development Strategy & Action Plan were put on hold and replaced with short-term activities to better serve our business community, Some of these include the Business Recovery E-Newsletter, providing frequent updates to the business community; and the Digital Main Street program to help downtown small businesses use digital technologies to adapt to a rapidly changing environment. Economic recovery is top of mind. Estimates show a quick rebound in 2021, and pre-COVID levels for Lincoln and the greater Niagara economy are expected to recover beginning in 2021 and grow into 2023.

8 LINCOLN PROGRESS EDITION 2021

Established in May 2020, shoplincoln.ca was developed to support our local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform has quickly become a permanent resource for continued tourism adaption and recovery marketing initiatives to support all businesses in Lincoln.

Patio permits The Town of Lincoln is expediting seasonal tent requests and temporary approvals for restaurants, bars, and wineries to help boost businesses as they reopen. Application fees in 2021 are also being waived. The move aims to help businesses adapt to COVID-19 public health measures, support economic activity and give residents and tourists an opportunity to enjoy Lincoln’s superb offerings in a safe manner.

@TownofLincolnON

Advancing Council Priorities in 2021 and Beyond Connected Community To connect all of Lincoln – people, places and our natural landscape.

Lincoln Museum & Cultural Centre Construction of the new Lincoln Museum & Cultural Centre nears completion, and we can’t wait to open our doors! This important cultural asset will be a welcoming community space where the past is preserved and celebrated, and where new narratives are created. Through the mediums of both the buildings and the collection, the history of the progression of the Town’s early settlements to established communities will be highlighted. We are very excited to have a new facility that will house the artifacts and exhibits that showcase Lincoln’s uniqueness within the region of Niagara. We look forward to sharing more news on the new Museum’s opening this year!

Dykstra Brothers carry on roofing tradition For the Dykstra Bros., business has always been a hands-on, family affair. Following in their father, Marty’s footsteps, co-owners Martin and Nicolai work with their team year-round to provide the best roofs/ siding jobs for their customers. The Dykstras first went into business in 1968 with Marty Dykstra, who started Dykstra Bros. Roofing Ltd. from the kitchen table in the old family farm house. Brothers Martin and Nicolai continued the family business into its second generation after purchasing it from their father in 2009 and to this day they still work out of old family barn.

Five decades of experience at Jerry’s Auto Body When it comes to experience and expertise with autobody restoration and repair, few can match the Jerry’s Auto Body name. Maggy’s Pet Boutique a dream come true Marcia Belchior had a dream. For a long time, her biggest dream was to open up a pet boutique. One that was dedicated to serving the needs of pet owners and their beloved cats and dogs, not the needs of a big franchise chain. One that offered quality, natural foods from Canadian producers wherever possible. In 2018, Marcia’s dream was finally realized when she opened Maggy’s Pet Boutique, named in memory of her “beautiful, fun loving, friendly and loyal Australian shepherd.” Marcia said that Maggy’s memory sits in the heart of how she runs her business. “Our goal is to model our stores personality after Maggy and make it a

Over the past seven years, the average annual increase has been 2.54%, which helped support continued investments in the community. Especially this year, the budget reflects this balance to invest in Lincoln while mitigating the financial impact of the pandemic.

Traffic Safety In April 2019, Town of Lincoln Council passed a resolution regarding truck safety, in an effort to address traffic safety. Traffic safety and speed reduction strategies are a high priority, and we continue to respond to residents’ concerns about improving road safety. The Town’s Transportation Master Plan developed a comprehensive Traffic Calming Policy to guide the implementation process of traffic calming/speed reduction measures. The ultimate goal of these actions are to improve the livability of neighbourhoods for all users.

Climate Adaptation Plan The Town of Lincoln aims to take action and contribute to the global shift towards sustainable growth and resilience. The Corporate Climate Adaptation Plan (CCAP) was developed by the Town of Lincoln and recently approved by Council, as a guideline to support and inform climate adaptation at the Corporate municipal level. It outlines how the Town will adapt its assets, operations, and services to the current and future impacts of climate change.

Customers valued at Mountaineer Movers When Mountaineer Movers celebrated 41 years of business in 2019, the team looked back into its past to remind ourselves of the history the company has drawn from. In 1951, Harry Mans immigrate to Canada from Holland with his family. Harry’s first job was to work on the farm that sponsored them when they came to Canada. “As our family got older, Harry saw the need for his family to work together. The family started delivering mail routes, then a newspaper routes and soon flowers, as well, said co-owner Wendy Mans-Keddie. “One day Harry saw an advertisement for a moving business that was up for sale. After some careful deliberation, he purchased the business name Mountaineer Movers. Thus, the ‘family’ business began!” Their consideration of their customers is what sets them apart. “As a family, we understand and realize that moving can be one of the MOST stressful times in a person’s life,” said Wendy, who is now the company president and worked along side Harry for 47 years. “We strive to remember that we are servicing a wide variety of people and demographics and they are confronting a major change in their life. They are leaving a place they have called home for a new and unfamiliar place that will soon become their new haven.” Wendy’s husband Andrew, who has 40 years of experience, does all in-home estimates as well as Tom Ensign, an employee of several years. Their daughter Sarah oversees the office administration. “We would not be a moving company without out movers – our ‘guys’. These men make Mountaineer a continuing success. ,” noted Wendy. The company’s philosophy is simple, she noted, success is

honesty. “All in all – trust your instincts and treat all those around you, whether they are family, customers, or employees with respect, dignity and encouragement. This is our philosophy on running a successful and prosperous Andrew Keddie (holding Lola), with his daughter Sarah business,” said Wendy. Mans-Keddie (holding Abby), wife Wendy Mans-Keddie.

Armstrong Strategy Group: Committed to better Democracy and Civic Engagement on poor municipal voter turnout, disengagement, and the seeming systemic bias against ordinary citizens.

Dave Meslin

“Meaningful ways to boost participation in democracy often come from initiatives in small communities,” says author Dave Meslin. Meslin, who recently joined Armstrong Strategy Group as Senior Associate, Democratic Innovation, spoke about this at a What’s the Big Idea event hosted by ASG and Henry of Pelham Winery. He is a renowned Toronto-based urbanist, community organizer, and author of the bestselling book Teardown: Rebuilding Democracy from the Ground Up. What’s the Big Idea, launched last year, is a moderated salon discussion, with a diverse line-up of guest speakers and topics meant to spark spirited debate and new ideas. In his recent talk, Meslin reflected

Vibrant public engagement is rare in an age of social-media cynicism where many feel they have no influence in a system that’s unwelcoming and inaccessible. But Meslin offered a slew of ways civic engagement could be made easier and more friendly. Local governments need to be demystified and made more approachable, he said, with attendance-friendly public meetings, understandable agendas, and information for those gatherings publicized in ways to reach more people. Often hearing the refrain that governments should act more like a business, Meslin takes that and turns it toward attracting customers. “Businesses spend millions of dollars attracting customers. Governments should make the same kind of effort to get people involved and engaged.” Meslin reflects Armstrong Strategy Group’s commitment to stronger communities and democratic

innovation: “We believe that the more people involved in the civic discussions of the day, the better,” said John Armstrong, President of ASG. Armstrong Strategy Group can provide municipal governments with bold ideas and innovative tools, to improve and even transform local democracy. Meslin and our team can design a customized plan for your organization, with a unique Open Doors Audit identifying opportunities for improvement and growth. From voting reform to improved User Experience Design, we work together to position municipalities as leaders in democratic innovation, and help you build constructive relationships with your residents. When combined with ASG’s expertise in strategic communications, consensus and coalition building, media and public relations, digital, design, fundraising and policy development, we’ve got the tools to help communities and organizations prosper.

There’s always a strategy...

...to make progress, to help and improve: government, businesses, non-profits and charities. armstrongstrategy.com
