In business, as in life, one must adapt or die. So, here we are...adapting. With May 4 being our true anniversary date, adjusting the overall size of NewsNow’s page has been under consideration for some time. Now at the two-year mark, the time has come for NewsNow to kick off its training wheels and really start to move. Considering we are only at the point in time where the original business plan would have called for starting as a weekly, the paper is light years ahead of its planned development. As part of this development, we are launching a concerted push with our digital programming as well. It is certainly not that online content was ever disregarded, but without the healthy beating heart of the print product, even a great a website would still prove ineffective. Starting this week, those of the digital age will see much more content being driven via our NewsNowNiagara.ca website, @MikesNiagara Twitter account and our facebook page. Advertisers will all have their ads uploaded onto our website as part of our downloadable e-edition, with the added option of having a hyperlink built in to kick readers directly to their own website for more information on their products or services. These features, combined with the bolstered content will drive our online presence into the foreseeable future and are things we simply were not prepared to offer before given the intense growth we have experienced in our short existence. While NewsNow is still wet behind the ears, our team is experienced and ready to serve with our least tenured employee having nine years in the print industry. Whether it is because of our clean, crisp design; larger paper size; large bright font; the largest distribution in Niagara West by a wide margin at 25,000-plus; our coverto-cover, 100 per cent West Niagara content, or; the fact our front page is our front page, we greatly appreciate the loyal support NewsNow has received. Big band, big crowd, big successful event
Arena/library fundraising campaign chair Margaret Andrewes raises a glass with Jennifer Hopkins, major sponsor of the gala.
What was just shy of a sold out crowd took in a great night of food, music and beverages Saturday at Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club as part of A Taste of Our Town. Beth Wagner, chair of library fundraising committee of the Our Town, Our Time campaign said the event could not have gone better. She thanked the event’s major sponsor, Jennifer Hopkins, noting, “Jennifer’s choice of entertainment was simply the best,” referring to the George Lake Big Band.
Jenna Gilbert, her mom Gerry and Henry Klassen peruse the silent auction items.

SOBEYS From Page 1 2010. We fell in love. He was the man I had been looking for my whole life.” Their love story took a devastating turn when Mark started having difficulty walking and speaking. After a few doctors’ visits, tests revealed a tragic diagnosis. “The doctor said ‘I hate to tell you this, but you have ALS’,” explained Debbie, who still works at Grimsby Sobeys. The diagnosis came in June, 2011. “He knew what ALS was, so when he got the news we just cried, cried and cried because ultimately it’s a death sentence,” she said. ALS has no known cause, no effective treatment and no cure. ALS attacks and destroys the motor neurons in the body, eventually denying the ability to move, speak and –– in the final stages –- to breath with life expectancy of 2-5 years. Mark was just 47 years old when he was diagnosed. He passed away in October 2012, two weeks before his 50th birthday. “He remained active until he absolutely couldn’t move anymore which was about nine months after his diagnosis,” she explained. The couple tried to live a normal life after the diagnosis. “He continued to fight the disease and tried to remain as independent as possible,” she said. The terrible effects

From Page 4 Chuvalo was as tough as they come, a raging bull who fought the biggest and strongest heavyweights of his time in an inconceivable 93 punishing professional fights and never got knocked down. Never off his feet, not once in 23 years in the ring. Our conversation took place before a live audience at Port Colborne’s Roselawn Theatre in front of a sold-out audience of 300 people. “Your critics have described you more of a defensive boxer than ...” I didn’t get to finish my sentence. “My critics should talk to the 74 guys I put in the hospital,” replied Chuvalo, rather calmly. Fortunately he did not say the critics should talk to the 74 feckless interviewers he had put in the hospital. His eyes said that. “The night I fought Muhammad Ali in Toronto, he went to the hospital afterwards and I went dancing with my wife.” I couldn’t wait to ask him about Henry Cooper. Way back in the 70’s I found myself in The Henry Cooper Pub in London, England staring at a wall of photos of every great fighter that ever lived including Jack Dempsey and the original Sugar Ray (Robinson). Cooper was a small heavyweight but a quick puncher with a deadly left hook, a pugilist who out-
talk put it to the manager bluntly. “So when are me and your boy going to meet in the ring?” asked Chuvalo. At this point in the storytelling, Chuvalo invokes a very good English accent. “Mister Chuvalo,” replied Cooper’s manager, clearing his throat, “he doesn’t even want to meet you socially!!!” And with that, perhaps the greatest compliment ever paid him, Chuvalo never got a shot. And Cooper, a smart man much beloved by the Brits, retired a champion, later to be knighted. His youngest son took his own life with a gun. Two other sons died together of heroin overdoses. His wife, unable to overcome the grief committed suicide as well. Today George’s job is to go into schools and describe to students, parents and teachers the devastation drugs can exact on family.

boxed and out-foxed his opponents instead of steadily pummeling them into a purple pulp as Chuvalo did. Henry Cooper who once knocked down a young Muhammad Ali was the British, European and Commonwealth Heavyweight Champion. Canada being part of that Commonwealth meant Chuvalo, the longestreigning Canadian champion had a legitimate chance to challenge Cooper. Except Cooper knew what every fan of boxing believed - trying to dance around George Chuvalo would be like throwing himself in front of a big, red double decker London bus. So Cooper artfully dodged Chuvalo, fighting less dangerous opponents. One day Chuvalo was training in a London gym when he spotted Cooper’s manager Jim Wicks. “Boom Boom” as George was known ambled over to Wicks and after a bit of small

Smoking bylaw in effect for Niagara Smokers will have to watch where they light up, or risk a ticket. Maria Brigantino, manager Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Niagara Region Public Health, and Gillian Chappell, Health Promoter Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention Niagara Region Public Health, discussed the regional smokefree outdoor spaces bylaw with Grimsby council on Monday evening. According to the
bylaw, municipal and regional properties are smoke-free. There is a nine metre provision from any entrance or exit from a municipal or regional building. For example the Peach King Centre or the Town Hall are municipally owned. Excluded are: roads; sidewalks; right-ofways; parking lots; beaches; trails; and residential dwellings owned, operated or subsidized by Niagara Regional Housing.
“The first year is solely educational. There will be no fines handed out... Just warnings,” explained Maria. The set fine after a year is $250 with applicable court fees, total payable fine is $305. The hot line is available 24/7 905688-8248 or 1-888505-6074 ext. 7393. Visit niagararegion.ca/health/substances/tobacco for help quitting smoking, for more info about the bylaw or to file a complaint.

Experts offer accounting, insurance advice A panel of experts from the legal, accounting and insurance fields will be on-site at the Grimsby Public Library on May 15. The panel of experts will be available from 3 – 5 p.m., to present key information, top tips and answer any questions about wills, estates and charitable giving. This event is free. “This is a great opportunity for folks
who are unsure about how to leave a legacy,” says Tamara Coleman-Lawrie, Chair of the Leave A Legacy Golden Horseshoe Program, adding “knowing how you can benefit the community and your family by planning your will and estate is truly a relief.” At the information session in Grimsby, a legal professional will speak to the importance of having a will and power of at-
torney, will share the top tips from a legal perspective, demonstrate issues and options with respect to probate and charitable giving through a will. The insurance professional will educate people on how to use insurance mechanisms to benefit charity, either outright or through an
estate plan. From the accounting perspective, information will be shared on how to include charitable giving in estate plans, and how certain investments and strategies can be used to benefit charity and individual estates. For more information, contact tamara@southniagara. unitedway.ca

Big winners at the Lions sports raffle A little rain didn’t stop the first annual Beamsville and District Lions Club sports raffle. The winners were announced on Saturday, May 3 at the Lincoln Community Centre. Coun.John Kralt pulled the winning tickets using the electronic spinning raffle wheel which was built by Lion Jack Polsky. The results were: Trackker boat was won by Josh Erb; Taylor Made Golf Clubs won by Daniel Levesque; Two mountain bikes were won by Steve Bennett; Camping gear was won by Rob McMaster; The $500 gift
card for Bass Pro was won by Tom and Carol Wall; The $500 gift card for Grimsby Tackle was won by Bob Wicklund. Lions secretary Steve Metelsky said the weather was reasonably mild during the raffle and the rain held off until minutes before Kralt activated the raffle ticket machine and with little difficulty, he was able to stop the spinning wheel long
enough to pull a ticket for each prize. The club is already busy planning for next year’s event. “It was a year in preparation for this moment which was over in two minutes,” Metelsky explained. “We will be launching our second Annual Sports Raffle very soon - with great prizes and lots of early bird/bonus type draws throughout.”

Grimsby Grinders win Ontario Cup Gold The Grimsby Grizzlies U14 Major Bantam Boys Basketball team, aka “The Grimsby Grinders”, went undefeated in pool play to capture Gold in the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) Provincial Championships hosted in Etobicoke on Sunday, April 27. Grimsby was grouped with teams from Toronto, Lindsay, Ottawa, Toronto-Serbia, Guelph, Scarborough, and
Caledonia in their OBA Division. The first year team was comprised of players recruited from the Grimsby Basketball Association. In the gold medal game, “The Grimsby Grinders” came out strong in the first half and never looked back, defeating Caledonia 63 to 49 in a grueling match. Grimsby had three players in double digits including Player
of the Game Max Mosquite, who led all scorers with 14 points. “It was a perfect end to a long and demanding season, as we got better every time we came together,” said Coach Ruel “Skeeter” Mosquite. “I couldn’t be prouder of the intensity, focus and competitiveness that our players, coaches and parents had all season. It was a tremendous experience for everyone involved.”

BBQ a step in right direction A tip o’ the cap to the team at Grimsby Sobeys for coming together in the name of a fellow employee who died of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Mark Doan was 49 when he passed away late in 2012. Now, his former girlfriend and co-worker Debbie Fortune and other Sobeys staff are going to pay homage to Mark by raising funds and awareness during a June 1 BQQ at the store. They are looking for items for a raffle table and for volunteers to help the day of. If you want to help out, you can contact NewsNow and we will put you in touch with Debbie or Jeff Pay, who are the lead organizers. ALS is one of those diseases nobody wants to know about. The impact is horrendous and relentless. Anything done to help defeat it is a step in the
Guests into the swing of it at gala It must be admitted, my Mom had a few concerns about me when I was a teen. Aside from being the typical pain in the butt most teenage boys are, she was pretty surprised when I asked her for some big band albums... yes, kiddies, I am from the vinyl era, when an album could also be melted into being a decorative candy dish....don’t ask. The Beatles and Glenn Miller were two of my favourites. The Beatles from sheer variety, were a lot of people’s faves, but Glenn Miller? That one was a surprise. I got a seven album boxed set with every cool Miller tune you’d ever want. Yes, I was one happy camper. All this is mentioned because Saturday night we took in the coolest true big band I have seen live in the George Lake Big Band, which originates in the GTA. The whole A Taste of Our Town was the brain child of Jennifer Hopkins of Vineland, who has seen the band before and envisioned a gala fundraiser to generate much-needed funds for the Our Town, Our Time campaign which support the new community complex in Beamsville. She anteed up the dough to cover the band. NewsNow gladly stepped in as the official media sponsor and “poof”, a great time had by all. And it really was a good time.
MIKE WILLISCRAFT With 140-plus in attendance, it was the social event of the spring in Lincoln. The room was in constant motion as guests floated from table to table. It was the most purely social event I have been to in years. Tons of work went into the night with Beth Wagner and Pauline Wilts doing a great job. All should be congratulated. All are looking forward to the grand opening of the new facility in June. After waiting for so long, it is hard to believe it is coming that fast. ****** Mothers Day is Sunday... don’t forget. The saying about every day should be Mothers Day is soooo true. I don’t get to see my mom much anymore. It is a bad excuse but I really don’t take time off. With her spending most of her time at my sister’s place in London, it is tough to come up with the halfday mimimum to make the trip. I know, bad son. Don’t worry, I heap guilt on myself all the time. But my mom being
my mom, if I did go, she would say, “Is there not a barbecue you are supposed to be taking pictures at or something?” Not all parents simply want for their kids whatever the heck their kids want, unquestioningly, but my mom falls into that category. I was always careful never to ask for anything when I was younger because my mom would kill herself to try to make it happen whether it was truly possible or not. We were never well off, yet, a passing comment turned into a care package of some sort, not for a birthday, not for Christmas. When I ask why? “Just because...” And mom hugs are the best –– no matter how old you are. I’ve had some great things happen in my life, and some truly nasty things. Mom is there, through thick and thin. Not something to be taken for granted people. I try not to, but I am not too good on that point, I’m afraid. I think it is a slight bit of consolation for my mom that I am tied up with yet another new newspaper. It surely isn’t that she is worried I am getting into trouble or anything. Well, at least non-paper related trouble anyways. Happy Mothers Day, Mom!! ****** Be sure to get your Mothers Day contest entries in by the Saturday deadline. See Page 7 for full details.

Wiltrader survived hurricane but not grounding By Skip Gillham For Newsnow Two ships have visited the Seaway as Wiltrader. The first, a 140.88 metre long freighter, made two trips inland in 1961 under the flag of Norway. The ship had been built at Malmo, Sweden in 1949 and sailed as Igadi until becoming Wiltrader
Shipwreck in 1960. On Feb. 19, 1964, the ship went aground in the Punta Indio Channel of Argentina while on a voyage from Buenos Aires, to Rotterdam, Holland. The freighter was not released until Feb. 28.
Then, Hurricane Betsy caught Wiltrader at New Orleans on Sept. 9-10, 1965, and the storm left the city and the ship with heavy damage. The storm was, at the time, noted as the costliest Atlantic hurricane in history. Wiltrader was refloated again and, despite 16-years of
Wiltrader, photo by Tom Manse, courtesy Roger LeLievre service, was once more repaired. It was sold for Liberian flag service as Seatrader in 1969 but was lost two
years later. The vessel went aground once more, this time north of Cape Town, South Africa, while on a trip from An-
twerp, Belgium to Kuwait. The former Seaway trader could not be refloated before it broke up as a total loss.
