A Student’s View By: Lulu Brown
This article will be the first of a series written by the Superintendent Student TUESDAY, Advisors. The Superintendent Student Advisory Team is made up of one boy and one APRIL 4, 2017 girl from each grade level, 7-12. We address issues from a student’s perspective and voice opinions from fellow classmates. Be watching these next few months for more articles! Today I will be addressing the issue of inaccessibility in our three level school building.
As I have encountered frequent injuries myself, it is evident our school is very inaccessible to students in wheelchairs and on crutches. I’ve been on crutches multiple times and have often struggled climbing four flights of stairs quickly and safely to get to my next class. I am not the only one with this conundrum. Abby Landuyt, a freshman at Albany, tore her ACL in a basketball game during the Stanberry Tournament earlier this season and is currently on crutches. Landuyt says, “I have come close to falling a few times on these stairs”. When I mentioned the new school having an elevator accessing all levels of the building she was all for it. Abby and I, along with many others have only temporarily faced these challenges. However, for some students, accessibility is a daily concern. Mr. Shoush, a history teacher at Albany, says he has moved his class down to a floor of the building accessible for a student in a wheelchair because they could not get to his classroom. These are just a few inconveniences students struggle with. Our new school would have an elevator that reached all floors of the building. This would make going to class quicker, safer, ADA (Americans with Disability Act) approved, and eliminate all of these concerns. •• EDITORIAL ••
