5 Facts About Handicap-Accessible Parking Handicap-accessible parking plays a critical role in giving chair users independence and mobility, making it important to understand the rules of the parking lot. To bring awareness to the challenges wheelchair users face, BraunAbility offers these reminders: 1. The striped lines next to a handicap-accessible parking space indicate it is reserved for a wheelchair-accessible vehicle. These spaces are wider than regular handicap accessible parking spaces, offering room for people to safely lower a ramp and enter and exit their vehicles.

2. There is a difference between handicap accessible parking for cars and wheelchair-accessible vans. When the parking sign says, “Accessible Vans,” it is reserved for wheelchair-accessible vehicles only. Van accessible spaces are easily identified by a striped access aisle on the passenger side.

3. Some people have hidden disabilities, and it may not be visibly apparent that they need a handicap-accessible spot. Not all people who require handicap parking access are reliant on wheelchairs. These spots are also intended for use by people with disabilities such as deafness or a recent injury.

4. Businesses are required to meet a quota for handicap accessible spots. The number of handicap accessible parking spaces required depends on the total number of parking spaces in the lot, but at least one in every six handicap accessible spaces must be designated for a wheelchair accessible vehicle, according to the American Disabilities Act. 5. Wheelchairs continue to increase in size, requiring more room to maneuver in and out of vehicles, and therefore need extra space in a parking spot for the wheelchair user to safely access a fully deployed ramp.

January 22, 1950 - January 9, 2021 Ricky Osborn, of St. Joseph, Missouri, was born outside of Stanberry, Missouri on January 22, 1950 to Marvin and Helen (Sowards) Osborn.

Rick graduated from Worth County High School in 1968 and entered the U.S. Army in June of 1969. He met and married Sarah (Thrall) on January 12, 1974.

Rick was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending Sundays with his family. Every Sunday was spent at his Mom and Dad’s house playing games, working around the farm, visiting and laughing. He had a fantastic sense of humor and the biggest laugh. He was a teaser and loved a good joke or prank. He raised three of his grandchildren and loved all of his grandchildren deeply.

Ricky was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bret Osborn; and his brother-in-law, Steve Norman. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Osborn; daughter, Amanda (Jon) Ozenberger; grandchildren, Jerod, Christian, and Vianne Osborn and Jax Ozenberger. He is also survived by his sister; Kathy Guess; handsome brother, Randy (Diane) Osborn; and sister, Gail Norman; sisters-in-law, Tina (Roger) Blake, Barbara (Bill) Doolin; and brothers-in-law, Steve (Margie) Thrall and Mickey Thrall; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Memorial Service was held in his honor on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at HeatonBowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Missouri’s Complex Fence Laws Explained A program to discuss Missouri’s Complicated Fence Law will be held on Tuesday evening, February 23rd from 6:30 to 9:00pm. “Missouri continues to have a very complicated fence law, in large part due to the fact that 2 separate laws cover the state depending on the county that your land is located”, according to Joe Koenen, Agricultural Business Specialist with University of Missouri Extension who will be delivering this program by zoom.

“If you own land you really need to know the law and how it impacts you whether you own livestock or not” says Koenen, and adding to the confusion is a 2016 portion of the law that was changed to address livestock liability that affects livestock and non-livestock owners alike.

Other problems are that both laws are subject to in-

terpretation and can be a little different, depending on the county you are and the court system. A comparison of both laws will be given at this program. Joe has been presenting programs on the Fence Law for over 30 years throughout the state, including via Zoom, Skype and ITV. This program will be done in person at several sites and via Zoom so attendees can see the presentation and also ask questions of the presenter. Light refreshments will be served, attendees are welcome to bring in their own dinner.

There is a $15 charge for this meeting that covers program and materials.
