(Galatians 1:6, I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.) In a Bible teaching ministry, we key on specific words and phrases contained in the sentence / paragraph structure.

In the case of this specific sentence from the Apostle Paul intended to be broadcast to all the churches, plural of the region of Galatia we gain an understanding that there are those who would seem to share in the beliefs of Jesus Christ but, not really. Notice, if you will, the word, pervert: (Websters dictionary: to alter (something) from its original course, meaning, or state to a distortion or corruption of what was first intended). Paul would make a statement about this dilution of the gospel in a letter to Timothy: (2 Tim. 3:5, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!) Sad to say this has been going on since the beginning of creation, perversion of the will of God. The part of this sentence that got my attention was those 4 little words, ‘which is not another’. The Gospel message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified twisted in such a way as to lack in the power of transformation from sin, not only our personal sin but also the sin born within every person since the rebellion in the garden. Paul tells us later in the book of Galatians that the evidence is in the fruit produced in a person’s life. Do they exhibit the essence of the spirit, or of the flesh? (Gal. 5:22-23, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.) The spirit of God is a gift from Jesus when we ask in His name. This is the evidence of the gospel at work in our lives but is contrasted by the works of the flesh, even encouraged in today’s society. (Gal. 5:19, Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries… those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.)

In Jesus,

Conception recognizes 150 years in 2023

CONCEPTION, Mo. (January 16, 2023) — Conception Abbey recognizes 150 years of monastic life in 2023.

Just as the monks of Engelberg Abbey made a year-long journey from Switzerland in 1873 to arrive at and establish “New Engelberg Abbey” (now Conception Abbey), the monastic community, too, intends to make this sesquicentennial anniversary a year-long celebration. The official anniversary date is December 8, 2023.

“This year, in 2023, we will mark the milestone of 150 years of Benedictine life at Conception Abbey,” said Right Rev. Benedict Neenan, Abbot of Conception Abbey. “We do this both to honor the heritage of those hundreds of monks and thousands of neighbors who have been part of Conception Abbey, and to ask Godʼs continued grace and guidance as we move forward.”

Rather than having one major celebration, the monks have chosen to honor the anniversary with our many groups of friends, family, donors, and groups throughout the year. A schedule of public events and celebrations will be released soon and updated regularly.

To commemorate this milestone, the monastic community will enhance the sanctuary of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in the coming months. Once renovations are complete later this spring, more information will be available about setting up tours.

In addition, Conception will host retreats centered on the Benedictine tradition, offer commemorative items for purchase, share historical photos on social media, feature historical articles in our triannual magazine, Tower Topics, and more.

For more information or to request photos, contact Kaity Holtman, Director of Communications, at 660.944.2823 or kholtman@conception.edu.

About Conception

The common life of work, prayer, and reflection shared by the monks who call Conception Abbey home is the heart of Conception. A Benedictine monastery dedicated to praising God in our daily cycle of work and prayer, we minister in Christ-like service to all people by welcoming visitors at the Abbey Guest Center, spreading the Gospel through The Printery House, educating and forming priests at the Seminary College and in our community as we are called.

The monks also provide pastoral ministry in parishes, hospitals, and religious houses.
