“The Very First Christmas Day” is an original Christmas story poem that tells of the Savior’s birth in Bethlehem. His parents had no money, although He was a King— An angel came to Joseph one night as he dreamed. “Don’t be afraid to marry her, this child is God’s own Son,” And with these words from God’s messenger, their journey had begun. They traveled to the city, their taxes to be paid— But when Christ was born they found no place for the baby to be laid. So they wrapped Him up and used a lowly manger for His bed, With nothing else but straw to place beneath the Christ-child’s head. The shepherds came to worship Him, the wise men traveled too— Led by a star up in the sky, they found the baby new. They gave him gifts so wondrous, their incense, myrrh, and gold, Thus completes the greatest story of a birth ‘twas ever told. He was just a tiny baby, born in a stable far away— They had no reservations, and nowhere else to stay. But His birth was so majestic, in a simple sort of way, A baby born in Bethlehem on a very special day. It was the Savior born in Bethlehem, on the very first Christmas Day.

A Parents Night Before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house I searched for the tools to hand to my spouse. Instructions were studied and we were inspired, In hopes we could manage “Some Assembly Required.” The children were quiet (not asleep) in their beds, While Dad and I faced the evening with dread: A kitchen, two bikes, Barbie’s town house to boot! And, thanks to Grandpa, a train with a toot! We opened the boxes, my heart skipped a beat.... Let no parts be missing or parts incomplete! Too late for last-minute returns or replacement; If we can’t get it right, it goes in the basement! When what to my worrying eyes should appear, But 50 sheets of directions, concise, but not clear, With each part numbered and every slot named, So if we failed, only we could be blamed. More rapid than eagles the parts then fell out, All over the carpet they were scattered about. “Now bolt it! Now twist it! Attach it right there! Slide on the seats, and staple the stair! Hammer the shelves, and nail to the stand.” “Honey,” said hubby, “you just glued my hand.” And then in a twinkling, I knew for a fact That all the toy dealers had indeed made a pact To keep parents busy all Christmas Eve night With “assembly required” till morning’s first light. We spoke not a word, but kept bent at our work, Till our eyes, they went bleary; our fingers all hurt. The coffee went cold and the night, it wore thin Before we attached the last rod and last pin. Then laying the tools away in the chest, We fell into bed for a well-deserved rest. But I said to my husband just before I passed out, “This will be the best Christmas, without any doubt. Tomorrow we’ll cheer, let the holiday ring, And not have to run to the store for a thing! We did it! We did it! The toys are all set For the perfect, most perfect, Christmas, I bet!” Then off to dreamland and sweet repose I gratefully went, Though I suppose there’s something to say for those self-deluded... Our Poppa’s Player of the Game from Albany’s girls basketball game, December 10th against Nodaway Valley was Kiley Pickering, she scored 3 points but provided a big lift off the bench for the Lady Warriors in their 63-22 loss. Kemper Cline was the Poppa’s Player of the Game on December 10th against Nodaway Valley. Cline led his team in scoring with 28 points which helped propel the Warriors to a 52-46 victory. Our Poppa’s Player of the Game from the girls game against Stanberry on December 14th was Abigail Troncin. Troncin led her team with 22 points in the 55-32 loss. The Poppa’s Player of the Game from the boys basketball game on December 14th was Jordan Poppa. Poppa finished the game with 9 points in the 51-34 loss to Stanberry. The Poppa’s Wrestler of the Night on December 16th was Gavin Shoush. Shoush wrestled in 3 matches picking up a pin fall win in each. Shoush picked up pin fall wins at 120 against Maryville in 1:26 and over Lafayette in 0:31. Shoush moved up a class to 126 against Stanberry and picked up a pin fall win in 3:30. I often wonder why the world doesn’t draw a deep collective breath of awe during the Christmas season as remembrance of this supernatural birth? As I flip through the multitude of channels on satellite tv the absence to any reference of the supernatural birth as the presence of God almighty in the flesh on the earth is quite apparent to me. There is an abundance of seasonal Christmas movies with Santa, both good and bad, the Grinch and Frosty the snow man. The theme of giving and receiving gifts with all the goodies are almost overwhelming. Hip, Hip, Hooray Christmas time is here with the fantasy of Santa’s workshop and getting your shopping done early before the stores empty out. After a couple of weeks my expectation of any reference to Jesus were almost dashed, I heard a familiar song: ‘The First Noel, the Angels did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel!) The word Noel is defined as a ‘Shout for Joy’ or proclaiming, ‘Merry Christmas.’ I looked up from my reading with hopes renewed as I heard something on television proclaiming the true reason for life, only to realize this beautiful Christmas Carol was the backdrop for a donation drive to help abused and abandoned dogs. The only reference I’ve seen the entire month of December connecting the true reason for the season was used to tug at the heartstrings hoping someone would make a financial donation. A supernatural event has taken place enabling those who believe the announcement of good tidings of great joy to overflow proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace and goodwill toward men!” God’s goodwill to be shared through His miraculous birth. Jesus said that the only way to see heaven is to be born of the spirit. Take time to praise Jesus allowing God’s Holy spirit to overshadow us and be born again.
