(Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.) In the book that bears his name Jeremiah brings forth one of the most quoted and published verses in the Bible, although possibly not seen with these exact words. There are several modern versions that substitute the word thoughts, with the word plans. Phrased in this way it leads to a popular way of thinking used to rationalize the happenings of everyday life. How many times have you heard someone say, ‘God has a plan for your life’ when seeking to give reason for the age-old question of, ‘Why do bad things happen to good people.’ I hear this misinterpretation in application to this portion of scripture far too often and used to justify sorrowful times as being, ‘God’s plan for your life’. I find it unacceptable to blame God for the loss of a loved one, physical illness, financial problems or emotional distress. From the beginning God gave man and woman free will to choose, but when deciding to follow Satan instead of God, death, sorrow and suffering became the way of life and will continue until the end of time as we know it. The bible tells us that all will die but it does not tell us how or when. Why is this a topic for discussion? If everything that ever happened on earth were caused by the God of creation there would be no free will, no freedom to choose between good and evil, living righteous lives or indulging in the lust of the flesh, lust of the eye and the pride of life. Bad things happen to good people because we live in a fallen world of which the bible tells us we will suffer tribulation in this life; but by faith we are saved in the hope of an eternal existence with Jesus in the heavenlies. Accidents happen, sickness and disease along with common calamity cause suffering merely because we exist in a fallen world. A world that gave into the temptation of Satan from the beginning. God did not cause your heart to sorrow but gives hope for tomorrow through His Jesus Christ. In the Love of Jesus, our living hope for tomorrow.
