(John 18:37-38, Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”) [trooth] that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality: a fact or belief that is accepted as true) When Pilate ask Jesus that age old question, “What is truth”, he was touch ing on that which was from the beginning of creation; an opposing view spoken of in Genesis, (2:16-17, And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”) God’s prohibition in the partaking of that which would result in death had been a curiosity, as I could understand the knowledge of evil but how could that which is good be a bad thing? (2 Peter 3:17-18, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.) There comes a moment in time when a person begins to decide within themselves that which is good, or evil. This is when sin and death entered the world. You would do well to notice the temptation did not come on their own but from the spiritual realm who placed that thought within their mind using human logic: (Gen 3:4-5, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”) Thus, the rebellion from living within the will of God to the desire of oneself began. Jesus gave us the most wonderful example when he prayed three times in the garden of Gethsemane: (Mark 14:36, nevertheless, not what I will, but what Thy will.”) Doing the will of God and desiring to abide by the Moral Law, The10 Commandments and seeking to avoid all inference of wrongdoing by living a life acknowledg ing absolute and objective truth. There is so much in the world today guided by opinion and the imagination of self where “Truth” is no longer that which is but that which is conjured within the mind and evidenced by original Sin.

CRMC Will No Longer be In-Network for Cigna Medicare Advantage Plans

Like many U.S. hospitals, officials at Cameron Regional Medical Center have been reviewing over the past several months the advisability of continuing the Medical Centerʼs relationship with Medicare Advantage plans as an in-network provider. As a result of this study, and as a first step, the Medical Center will no longer be an in-network provider for Cigna Medicare Advantage plans effective December 31, 2022.

CRMC Administrator, Joe Abrutz, has indicated the reasons behind this scrutiny of Medicare Advantage plans are numerous. “Advantage plans are not advantageous for the patient, and they are not advantageous for health care providers,” he stated. “In order to realize the true benefits the Medicare program was meant to provide, patients need to stay with original government Medicare (Parts A, B, and D), plus a Medicare supplement.” He further advised that the well-advertised, zerodollar Medicare Advantage plan premiums will lead to much larger financial responsibilities for the patient in the long run in the form of deductibles and co-pays.

Many Medicare Advantage plans are coming under increased investigation because federal agencies have accused them of denying care, exaggerating the severity of patientsʼ illnesses to realize millions more from the Medicare program, delaying care with onerous pre-authorization requirements, and utilizing deceptive marketing practices. Some U.S. hospitals, including the Mayo Clinic, are cutting all Medicare Advantage plans for

Abrutz indicated that, while this was a very difficult decision for the Medical Center, it has become financially necessary. Over the past two years, with COVID-19, operating expenses have increased by double digits, while reimbursement rates from Medicare Advantage plans have remained relatively stagnant. Payment denials and payment recalls by these private insurers have become commonplace, as have unpublished “payment edits.” The inequities being imposed on health care providers by Medicare Advantage plans are usually unbeknownst to the

The CRMC Administrator also noted, “The rates at which Medicare Advantage plans are delaying care and denying care are increasing significantly. Traditional government Medicare does not delay or deny care . . . there are basically no preauthorization requirements with original Medicare. It stays with you if you travel, while Medicare Advantage plans may only pay for emergency services if you leave your area.”

Marketing tactics for Medicare Advantage plans may indicate that patients can be seen at any facility accepting Medicare; however, effective December 31, 2022, CRMC will be considered out-of-network for Cigna Medicare Advantage plans.

It should be understood by the public that CRMC will still see Cigna Medicare Advantage plan patients for emergency services. However, in non-emergent situations, Cigna Medicare Advantage plan patients can only be seen by in-network providers, or the patient will be responsible for out-of-network charges.

All Medicare Advantage plans are being reviewed in depth at CRMC, with more decisions to be made over the next few months. According to Abrutz, “Medicare beneficiaries need to be aware these are private insurance companies - usually forprofit companies - that are selling Medicare Advantage plans. They donʼt have to follow the same regulatory requirements that govern traditional Medicare. Countless individuals have told us here at the hospital that they thought they were buying a supplement, only to discover later they have lost their government Medicare.” Abrutz also noted that changing back from a Medicare Advantage plan to original government Medicare may be difficult, depending on the time frame and a patientʼs individual circumstances.

In the best interest of the patient, and in the best interest of the Medical Center, CRMC has been forced to take a long, hard look at Medicare Advantage plans. Cameron Regionalʼs mantra and philosophy have always been “Access to Care,” but the motivation behind Medicare Advantage plans falls far short of CRMCʼs patient-oriented stance.

Cameron Regional Medical Center, Inc. is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation.

Mary Elizabeth Cook was born on March 28, 1934, in Watertown, New York to Clyde and Helen (Lashway) Holverson. Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by her children on November 18, 2022, at the age of 88.

Mary moved to Missouri in 1950. She met and mar ried George Edward Cook, and together they had seven children. Mary enjoyed watching TV, especially Westerns and her Kansas City Chiefs, as well as playing cards and crocheting, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family and her dog Bella. Mary made friends wher ever she went, and she didn’t know a stranger. She was quick witted and ornery as all get out, but she’d hide her sarcasm with a wink and a smile.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, two sisters, great-grandson Cyprian Ayers, granddaughter Lindsay Cook, grandson-in-law IB Fugate III, and grandson Dillon Atkison.

Mary is survived by her children, Debbie (LD) Ayers, St. Joseph, MO; Ed (Sharon) Cook, Turney, MO; Dan Cook, Turney, MO; Nancy Rothwell, Middletown, OH; Patty (Dale) Findley, Albany, MO; Barbara (Jim) Holtz, Turney, MO; Linda (Chris) Weddle, Cameron, MO; 11 grand children; 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary’s witty charm, smile, and love will be greatly missed. There will never be another Lollipop Kid, toothless “Play ball”, chocolate pie, or cream puffs like the ones she blessed her family with. God gained an amazing angel, while we were left with a lifetime of love and memories.

The body has been cremated. No services were planned at Mary’s request.
