But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.) Offer sacrifice of praise to God; ponder this phrase for a moment if you will. There was a time I would draw a very puzzling conclusion when reflecting on these verses. How could I offer anything to God in the form of a sacrifice that would be worthy of His acceptance, other than my faith of course. Then I realized that God’s word is infallible and if the bible says it, then it’s so. It was my immaturity in understanding that was leaving me feeling unfulfilled and not worthy of offering a sacrifice to the all-knowing creator of all that is or ever was or ever will be. I wholeheartedly believe that Jesus died outside of Jerusalem on a hill called Golgotha, the place of the skull. The dying part is that which is easy to believe, but after He was buried just as predicted, he rose from the dead three days later to walk this earth once again. This He did for forty days until the time when he was taken up into the clouds to take his place at the right hand of God as intercessor for those who believe and pray in His name. Exhausted. It was Thanksgiving Day, but Grandma Nora wasn’t hovering over the turkey in the big, black coal stove oven. Mom wasn’t coming through the front door carrying a still-warm mincemeat pie. Grandpa Will wasn’t carefully sliding his napkin from an engraved silver ring. I wasn’t playing outside with Bill McClelland, his little sister, Jane, and Alden Leo, the kid who lived on Acoma Street, in the front yard under the maple trees. Pop wasn’t sneaking out the back door for a cigarette. Grandma lived to be 85 but never saw him smoke or drink. It was Thanksgiving Day, all right, and my thoughts

were about the traditional family dinners we had so many years ago. My reality in November 1944, though, was in the mud somewhere in France, near Ancerville. The 6th Armored Division had fought its way across the Nied River in some of the bitterest fighting we had experienced. The German 559th Volksgrenadier Division had orders to stop us. Gen. Kurt Freiherr von Muehlen told his grenadiers: “German laxness is now at an end! We must finally learn to hate. Our hate must be so fanatic that we see each enemy soldier as our personal enemy.” And then there was the mud, It had rained for days, and the bogey wheels on our tanks were hopelessly sunk in slop. We had to use axes from our Jeeps and 6X6 trucks to chop down trees to cover the roads and give the tanks better traction. The service guys welded “duck bills” on the tank tracks to try to defeat the mud. We were exhausted. But there was still hope we could end the war by Christmas. (We didn’t.)
The mud had taken its toll, with many GIs unable to get their boots on, because of trench foot. Gen. Patton promised we’d have a clean, dry pair of socks every day. I don’t know how he did it, but he made good on his promise. A 6X6 truck pulled up every day with clean, dry socks for everyone. They ept your feet warm and dry for just a few minutes, but they felt wonderful. He also ordered his chaplains to pray to the Lord “to stay these immoderate rains” so we could kill more Germans. Thanksgiving Day was coming up, and we couldn’t think of much to be thankful for. And then came the good news. Our field kitchens were ordered forward to give us a Thanksgiving Day dinner. We had been living for months on C and K rations - meat and vegetable stew, meat and beans, meat and vegetable hash, corned pork loaf with carrots and apple flakes, canned eggs with bacon bits. The problem was that the Germans knew it was our Thanksgiving Day,
too, and knew we were vulnerable They kept us down with H&I (harassing and interdiction) artillery fire. There was no chow line that day. Too risky to bunch up. We had to run to the old barn where our mess sergeant, Harry Taylor, and his assistant, Willy “Steelball” Davis, were serving our dinner. It was raining and we had to run back for cover with our mess kits heaped with turkey, dressing, potatoes and cranberry sauce. Even hunkered down in the mud with rain in our food, it was a Thanksgiving dinner. And as we watched each other eat, we just had to laugh about how funny we looked. Mom, Grandpa and Pop weren’t there. Our family that day was Harry, Steelball, Gordon Manring, Kenny Grace, Robert “Wrinklebelly” McCleary, “Spider” Barnes, Ralph Wharlow, Morris “Shoat” Hogue, Paul Allen, Bill “Whitey” White and a bunch of other guys, many no longer living. All these years later, I still think of them as “family”.
