(Mark 14:71-72, Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!” A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept.) To this devotional we could entitle, the ‘Tale of two disciples’. The one is Peter, a man of action and accustomed to forcefully bringing about results in the here and now. As a few hours before his denial of Jesus, he would proudly proclaim: (Mark 14:31, he spoke more vehemently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”) Then there is the second member of the ‘Tale of two disciples’ : Judas, (John 13:2, And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot to betray Him) (John 13:27, Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him.) (Matt 27:3-5, Then Judas, His betrayer, see ing that He had been condemned, was remorseful…“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed and went and hanged himself.) This may be a portion of scripture that brings about a sense of emptiness due to those who personally know someone who has departed this life due to suicide, but this account is far-removed as an example of two who would suffer remorse to the extreme in grief and guilt after denying the God of salvation. Jesus Christ would enter this world of sin desiring relationship with those who would choose to surrender all worldly passions, good and bad with the desire for to live out: (Gal 2:20, I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me) What of the ‘Tale of two Disciples’? We see that both suffered great guilt due to their actions and both separated themselves from the Lord Jesus but as recorded by the Apostle Paul: (2 Cor. 7:10, For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.) Yes, at times we will all stumble but through Jesus we will rise again. Keep looking up as our redemption draws nigh. In

Students at VEG Elementary contributed their art to help make the Albany Heritage Society “Not Scary” Haunted House a success. Stu dents portrayed very innovative ideas for their Halloween characteriza tions. Their artwork was displayed throughout the maze in the Hallow een House. Choosing the first and second place best art from each class was a very difficult decision. Finally, decisions were made and the prize winning art was displayed separately on the Winner’s Wall. On November 10 a short ceremony was held at the VEG elementary school to present an appreciation card and two dollar bill to each first place winner and an appreciation card and a silver dollar to each second place winner.

First place winners:

Kindergarten: Zaxton Freeman and Lucy Knisley, First grade: Rosalyn Redmond and Eliza Rolves, Second grade: Harper Akins and Gracie Gilbert, Third grade: Adalyn Wilson and Zaryn Smith, Fourth grade: Keira Ferguson and Townsen Crawford, and Fifth grade: Nikayla Deierl and Mariah Crawford.

Second place winners: Kindergarten: Titus Youngs and Maddox Russell, First grade: Brogan Lyddon and Kysleigh Henry, Second grade: Morgan Jones and Dominic Howell, Third grade: Jaxson Rigney and Lincoln Shoush, Fourth grade: Ayden Parkurst and Lukas Messner, and Fifth grade: Gavin Wilson and Audrina Atkison.

Albany Heritage Society also provided a Scary Haunted House at the site. This was well attended with many adults commenting that it had been many years since Albany has had a Haunted House. A few high school students were hired to be scary characters in the Scary Haunted House and worked along with members of the Albany Heritage Society. I am told that they were very scary.

Albany Heritage Society wishes to thank everyone who made the Haunted House, Heritage Day, and Bingo successful this year...the workers, the donors, and all who attended these events. We could not do it without our very supportive community.

Gobbled up turkey And buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, Beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling So plump and so round, ‘Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.

I crashed through the ceiling, Floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding And a handful of pie.

But, I managed to yell As I soared past the trees.... Happy eating to allPass the cranberries, please.

May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes ‘n gravy Have nary a lump,

May your yams be delicious May your pies take the prize, May your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off of your thighs.

The Secret of Stuffing a Turkey

How many cooks does it take to stuff a turkey?

Only one, but you REALLY have to squeeze to get him in.

What did the hen tell the naughty chicks?

If you your father could see you now he would turn in his gravy.

Our lives are so busy these days that it’s hard to slow down and appreciate all that we have. Now’s a great time to do that, and to give thanks for all that we are about to receive, too!

2. Pecans are a heck of a lot more expensive this year, and we can blame China’s new pecan craze. According to Beth Goulart’s piece (of pie) in Slate, in 2009 the Chinese didn’t even have a name for Pecans. Now, the upper middle class has an extra buck to spend, and they are paying to import about 83 million pounds. (The U.S. still takes the

lead in pecan consumption, though, at almost 303 mil lion pounds per year.)

3. Sweet Potatoes are not yams. And most aren’t even orange. The U.S., Australia, New Zealand and Japan are the only countries that primarily consume orangefleshed varieties of sweet potatoes, which make up only 5 percent of the total production of sweet pota toes. North Carolina, whose state vegetable is the sweet potato, produces about 40

WHY HE CARRIED THE TURKEY

In Richmond, Virginia, one Saturday morning, an old man went into the mar ket to buy something. He was dressed plainly, his coat was worn, and his hat was dingy. On his arm he carried a small basket.

"I wish to get a fowl for to-morrow's dinner," he said.

The market man showed him a fat turkey, plump and white and ready for roasting.

"Ah! that is just what I want," said the old man. "My wife will be delighted with it."

He asked the price and paid for it. The market man wrapped a paper round it and put it in the basket.

Just then a young man stepped up. "I will take one of those turkeys," he said.

He  was dressed in fine  style and carried a small cane.

"Shall I wrap it up for you?" asked the market man.

"Yes, here is your mon ey," answered the young gentleman; "and send it to my house at once."

"I cannot do that," said the market man. "My errand boy is sick to- day, and there is no one else to send. Be sides, it is not our custom to deliver goods."

percent of sweet potatoes in the U.S. This year, early rain in NC caused a decrease in sweet potato harvest by 20 percent in comparison to last year.

4. Pumpkin in your pie most likely came from Il linois, the largest producer of pumpkins in the U.S. In 2012, about 12,000 acres of pumpkins were grown. About 5,000 of those acres are designated exclusively for the leading cannedpumpkin producer, Libby’s.

"Then how am I to get it home?" asked the young gentleman.

"I suppose you will have to carry it yourself," said the market man.

"It is not heavy."

"Carry it myself! Who do you think I am? Fancy me carrying a turkey along the street!" said the young gentleman; and he began to grow very angry. The old man who had bought the first  turkey was standing quite near. He had heard all that was said.

"Excuse me, sir," he said; "but may I ask where you live?"

"I live at Number 39, Blank Street," answered the young gentleman; "and my name is Johnson."

"Well, that is lucky," said the old man, smiling. "I hap

Pumpkin products in gener al have increased by about 19 percent, and pumpkin sales have increased over the last few years. Accord ing to the Agricultural Mar keting Resource Center, in 2012, almost 12.4 million cwt of pumpkins were were harvested from 47,800 acres in the U.S. That’s about 16 percent increase.

pen to be going that way, and I will carry your turkey, if you will allow me."

"Oh, certainly!" said Mr. Johnson. "Here it is. You may follow me."

When they reached Mr. Johnson's house, the old man politely handed him the turkey and turned to go.

"Here, my friend, what shall I pay you?" said the young"Oh,gentleman. nothing, sir, noth ing," answered the old man. "It was no trouble to me, and you are welcome."

He bowed and went on. Young Mr. Johnson looked after him and wondered.

Then he turned and walked briskly back to the market.

"Who is that polite old gentleman who carried my

According to Christopher Leonard of the Washington Post, just four corporations — Cargill, Hormel, But terball and Farbest Foods — are responsible for half of the turkey consumed on Thanksgiving Day. That’s quite a monopoly. But this year, news of Butterball’s Turkey shortage had some forecasting a big opportu nity for small farmers to gobble up some of the tur key business. Regardless of where we got your turkey, we hope you snagged one.

turkey for me?" he asked of the market man.

"That is John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. He is one of the great est men in our country," was the answer.

The young gentleman was surprised and ashamed. "Why did he offer to carry my turkey?" he asked.

"He wished to teach you a lesson," answered the mar ket man.

"What sort of lesson?"

"He wished to teach you that no man should feel him self  too fine  to carry his  own packages."

"Oh, no!" said another man who had seen and heard it all. "Judge Marshall carried the turkey simply because he wished to be kind and obliging. That is his way."

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire. If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something, for it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations, because they give you opportunities for improvement. Be thankful for each new challenge, because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes. They will teach you valuable lessons. Be thankful when you’re tired and weary, because it means you’ve made a difference.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things. A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks. Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive. Find a way to be thankful for your troubles, and they can become your blessings.

Indians and the Pilgrims Thanksgiving

Nathan, a young boy, after hearing the story of Thanksgiv ing and how the Indians and the Pilgrims sat down together, climbed up into his father’s lap and said, ‘Daddy, did you know that if we were Indians, you would be a brave and Mom would be a squawk?’

‘That is the best description of your mother I have ever heard, Nathan’, replied his daddy as he ducked.

1.

Six Legged Turkey

An industrious turkey farmer was always experi menting with breeding, his mission was to produce the perfect turkey. His family was fond of the leg portion for dinner and there were never enough legs for ev eryone.

The farmer even tried breeding turkeys with other animals. After many frustrating attempts, the farmer related to his friend Zeb the results of his latest experi ment, which involved introducing octopus genes into a turkey.

‘Well I finally did it! I bred a turkey that has six legs!’ Said the farmer. Zeb could not resist enquiring, ‘how did the turkey meat taste?’.

‘I don’t know, ‘said the farmer, ‘I haven’t caught the bird yet!’

The Turkey, the Parrot and the In-laws

Kindly sent in by Cody Martha had a parrot called Brutus, the only problem was that Brutus cussed something awful. Now Martha was having her in-laws over for Thanksgiving, and so she needed to train Brutus quickly not to swear.

Just before her Mother-in-law was due Brutus cussed terribly, so Martha but him in the freezer for 2 minutes to literally cool off. Then she opened the door and took out the parrot along with the turkey.

“And have you learned your lesson about cussing?’ Martha asked the parrot.

Brutus the parrot took one look at the dead turkey and said: ‘I sure have. But I have one I have a question, “What did the turkey do?” ‘

Things for Which to be Thankful

All the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech.

The spouse who complains when dinner is not on time, because s/he is home with me, not with someone else.

The teenager who is complaining about doing dishes, because that means she is at home & not on the streets.

The mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

The taxes I pay because it means that I'm employed.

The clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

My shadow who watches me work because it means I am out in the sunshine.

A lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means I have a home.

The space I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking.

My huge heating bill because it means I am warm.

The lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means that I can hear.

The piles of laundry and ironing because it means I have clothes to wear.

Weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been productive.

The alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I'm alive.

Getting too much email bogs me down but at least I know I have friends who are thinking of me.
