How to help veterans in need Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. • Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it. Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost. • Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week. But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans. Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need. Many veterans return home from serving overseas in need of help. Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated. TF17B492 TANYA MCCAMPBELL LONESTAR INVESTMENTS, LLC ALBANY, MO

VETERANS DAY FACTS AND FIGURES Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on November 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday. Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives. Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts. • According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female. • California, Texas and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more. • Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war and peace. • The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789. • Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post-9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2 percent. • Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. • Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978. • An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave. Veterans Day occurs each year on November 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers. TF16B576

HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m. The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words: Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our
States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting in its place the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first “Veterans Day Proclamation” which stated: “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans’ Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible.” On that same day, President Eisenhower sent a letter to the Honorable Harvey V. Higley, Administrator of
Veterans’ Affairs (VA), designating him as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee. In 1958, the White House advised VA’s General Counsel that the 1954 designation of the VA Administrator as Chairman of the Veterans Day National Committee applied to all subsequent VA Administrators. Since March 1989 when VA was elevated to a cabinet level department, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has served as the committee’s chairman. The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363 (82 Stat. 250)) was signed on June 28, 1968, and was intended to ensure three-day weekends for Federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. It was thought that these extended weekends would encourage travel, recreational and cultural activities and stimulate greater industrial and commercial production. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holidays on their original dates. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on October 25, 1971. It was quite apparent that the commemoration of this day was a matter of historic and patriotic significance to a great number of our citizens, and so on September 20th, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97 (89 Stat. 479), which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of November 11, beginning in 1978. This action supported the desires of the overwhelming majority of state legislatures, all major veterans service organizations and the American people. Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. FALL HUNTING GUIDE • THE NEW SHOPPER • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2021
Share the Harvest helps deer hunters donate venison to those in need. The program is administered by the Conservation Federation of Missouri and the Conservation Department. Donating is easy. Simply take your deer to an approved Share the Harvest meat processor and let the processor know how much venison you wish to donate. To learn more about Share the Harvest or to find a participating processor near you, visit mdc. mo.gov/share. Donating Deer rom the CWD Management Zone Deer harvested from CWD Management Zone
counties can be donated only to processors participating in the Share the Harvest CWD Testing Program. For a list of these processors, visit mdc.mo.gov/share. In addition, deer harvested from CWD Management Zone counties must be tested for CWD in order to be donated to Share the Harvest. If your deer has been tested before you arrive, you must present the CWD barcode number provided by the person that sampled your deer. If your deer was not sampled before you arrive, the head and a few inches of neck must be present. Donating Deer Bound for a Taxidermist To collect a CWD sample, processors will need to cut through the neck of your deer. If you want to keep the cape of your deer, you will need to make special arrangements, such as the following:
Have a taxidermist cape your deer first, then deliver the caped head to the participating processor. Take your deer to a taxidermist that is participating in the CWD Testing Program (mdc.mo.gov/cwd) to have it sampled. Have them give you the CWD barcode before donating the deer to a participating processor. Donating Deer if you Want to Keep the Head Please note that some participating Share the Harvest
processors are collecting have been no identified casdeer heads for sampling by es of CWD transmission to MDC. The Island City Christian & Calvary Stanberry Churches (John 2:13, Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.”) I imagine this portion of scripture has a familiar ring with the sight of Jesus as he yielded a whip in a display of ‘Righteous indignation’ turning over the tables and making an absolute mess of the merchandising going on in the Temple. One thing that’s apparent to me is that the importance and implication of this scene has been passed over as Jesus cleansed the Temple on Passover Week at the beginning of his ministry and once again three years later during the last week of his ministry as is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. (Luke 19:46, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves.’) The mere thought of the place where people gather to Worship becoming a venue for ‘fun’ and ‘profit’ enrages Jesus to the point of fashioning a whip of cords and driving them out. I think of the modern church and how many things are included in the short time we have that distract from worship and prayer with the desire to give God praise, honor, and glory in heart, mind, and soul. Sad to say there are many gatherings that focus on programs, projects and whatever it takes to fill the pews instead of offering God that heartfelt prayer of faith. (Matt 7:22-23, Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’) When the time comes will your voice be familiar enough for Jesus to recognize?

Dear Sir or Madam, Each year around the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Lord’s Warehouse, located at Albany, MO, the New Hampton Christian Church and several other area Churches help sponsor what we call “Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets”. Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets are Thanksgiving dinners, which include turkey or ham, vegetables, rolls, and dessert. These are boxed up and given out to needy families in the four county area, including Harrison, Gentry, Worth and Daviess. Towns that are included in this mission include Stanberry, Darlington, Albany, Martinsville, New Hampton, Bethany, McFall, Ridgeway, Eagleville, Cainsville, Mt. Moriah, Gilman City, Pattonsburg, Grant City and many more small towns in the four county area. We are not limited to just these towns, but will cover all areas in between. The purpose of this letter is to notify you of the Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets mission and letting you know that we will be collecting names around the four county areas. There will be sign-up sheets at designated places within your area. We’re also praying that you would be willing to help donate for this mission. We’ll be collection monetary donations throughout the months of October and November. You’re invited to come over and help with putting together the Bounty Baskets on Sunday, November 21, 2021 (depending on the COVID 19 status) at the New Hampton Christian Church. Lunch will be served before putting the Bounty Baskets together. If you wish to make a monetary donation, it may be sent to the Lord’s Warehouse in care of Rick J. Smith, 16588 W. 310th St., Bethany, MO 64424. Please be sure and mark your donation Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets. You can also contact Rick J. Smith at 660-868-0771 or Philip McChesney at 660-4392163. In 2020, due to monetary donations and the volunteer help of God’s many workers, we were able to feed 425 plus families in the surrounding areas. This year with the economy at its present state, we will be looking at, at least, 400 families in need of this God sent Bounty Basket. All support for the mission will be greatly appreciated. God Bless! Thanks for your support of this mission. Due to the COVID 19 issues at hand in our area, information in this letter may change at a later date. This mission will go ahead as planned, just may be done a little different this year.
