Avoid a “Turkey” of a Thanksgiving with a 10-Minute Pre-Trip Vehicle Check One way to avoid a turkey of a Thanksgiving road trip is to make sure the vehicle you will be driving is running well. A 10-minute pre-trip check is small potatoes compared to a big helping of inconvenience if you break down many miles away from home, according to the Car Care Council.

“A pre-trip vehicle check provides peace of mind, helping reduce the chance of costly car trouble and providing an opportunity to have any repairs performed by one’s own trusted technician before hitting the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

“While no inspection can guarantee a car’s performance, it’s comforting to know proper precautions were taken to ensure a stressfree Thanksgiving road trip.”

The Car Care Council suggests the following 10-minute vehicle check to help ensure safety and reliability on the road: Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

Check the hoses and belts that can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

Check lighting to identify any problems with exterior and interior lighting as the chance of an accident increases if you can’t see or be seen.

Check wipers.Wiper blades should be replaced every six months. Make sure the windshield wipers are working properly and keep the reservoir filled with solvent.

The Car Care Council also recommends that motorists restock their emergency kit. To save on fuel costs during the trip, the council suggests that motorists avoid aggressive driving, observe the speed limit and avoid excessive idling. Gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing should be replaced to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating.

Is Your Check Engine Light On? Don’t Ignore it.

One of the most vital signals of an improperly functioning vehicle is the check engine light and when illuminated, it alerts the driver to a variety of existing potential problems. Vehicle check-ups during community car care events throughout the country reveal that the check engine light is on in nearly one out of ten vehicles, says the Car Care Council.

“When the check engine light comes on, it means that a vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly, even if the vehicle appears to be running normally,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A glowing check engine light doesn't mean you have to immediately pull the car to the side of the road, but it does mean you should get the car checked out as soon as possible. Ignoring the warning light could result in costly repairs. At the very least, the light could alert you to an engine problem that is negatively impacting fuel economy.”

Some common malfunctions that can cause the check engine light to illuminate include a faulty oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. If the light flashes, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately to prevent severe damage, which may include catalytic converter damage.

When scheduling service, make sure the automotive shop that examines your vehicle has professional technicians who are trained and certified in OBDII diagnosis and repair.

The technician will connect your vehicle's computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will provide trouble codes indicating why the check engine light was activated.

While the diagnostic tool is connected, the technician can analyze data streams such as the idle speed, throttle response, engine temperature, fuel system pressure, manifold vacuum, exhaust emission levels and many other key indicators. Once the problem is fixed, the car's computer is reset to initiate the computer’s release process. The technician should then advise the customer of the proper course of action, potential warranty coverage, further testing if necessary and recommended repairs.

Ease Gas Pump Pains by Replacing Old Habits with New Ones

Gas pump prices remain on their roller-coaster ride, with more ups than downs. They’re hard on the budget and beyond consumers’ control. With some changes in our daily habits, however, we can compensate, at least partially, for rising fuel costs. Adhering to your errand list, thereby eliminating an extra trip to the store for a forgotten item, saves miles and dollars. (U.S. Department of Transportation reports 63% of all trips are 5 miles or less) Beyond sensible trip planning and conservative driving, several conditions under the hood and around the car can be corrected to conserve gas. “Under inflated tires waste fuel,” says Rich White, spokesman for the Car Care Council. “You can improve your gas mileage by about 3% just by maintaining proper tire pressure, a factor that’s high on the failure rate in our National Car Care Month check lanes.

“Chalk up another 10% for a clogged air filter plus a conservative 4% for engine malfunctions such as worn spark plugs and faulty fuel and emission control systems. Correcting these conditions can improve mileage by as much as 40%!”

Among other fuel wasters are dirty oil, a malfunctioning automatic transmission and a cooling system thermostat that keeps the engine running cold. Engines are designed to operate within a specific temperature range for optimum efficiency.

Slow down! According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, a vehicle loses about one percent in fuel economy for each one mile per hour driven above 55 m.p.h.

Although this formula should be adjusted for different car models and ages, consider that a car which averages 30 miles per gallon at 55 m.p.h. would get 28.5 m.p.g. at 60 m.p.h., 27 m.p.g. at 65 m.p.h., and 25.5 m.p.g. at 70 m.p.h.

A final consideration: according to the U.S. Department of Energy, if 145 million passenger vehicles idle for five minutes a day, which is not unusual considering the numerous drive-in facilities throughout our nation, approximately four million gallons of gasoline are consumed. That’s gas being wasted, going nowhere. Idling is sometimes necessary in traffic jams, but while waiting at drive-in windows, or to pick up a passenger it’s more economical to cut the engine if the wait is longer than 30 seconds. Starting up your car again actually uses less gasoline. “Breaking old habits doesn’t come easily,” concludes White. “Being car care aware, on the other hand, is a habit that should be easy to form.

The incentives are there in dollars and cents.”

Take the Scare Out of Winter Driving

When the weather outside is frightful, a little advance preparation will take the scare out of winter driving, says the Car Care Council. A few preventive vehicle maintenance steps will keep you from being stranded in severe winter weather.

The thought of a breakdown, an engine not starting or otherwise being stranded is scary as it is, but those things happening in freezing winter weather adds another level of fear. An investment of an hour or so to have your vehicle checked will pay off and help make sure your winter driving is less frightful and more delightful.

The Car Care Council recommends the following steps for winterizing your vehicle: Check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.

Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.

Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. Typically, wiper blades should be replaced every six months.

If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done immediately. Winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly.

Check the brakes. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety component.

Inspect the exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed.

Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed.

Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals as dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time.

Motorists should also keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

Learning is an ongoing theme in the bible as Peter would say. (2 Peter 3:17-18, You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.) The theme of learning goes right along with that which God has provided: (2 Tim 3:16, All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.) Since Jesus Christ is the one and only way to eternal life we are instructed to learn, to grow and accept righteousness from God’s Holy word, the Bible. In the times in which we live many will re-define words and create phrases proclaiming the words of the bible to be of no understanding without using their interpretation. Some of these phrases diminish the consequence of sin by proclaiming that God has no expectation of holiness. One such phrase I often hear is that (God Hates the Sin but Loves the Sinner). I understand this man-made phrase is used in accordance with the verse from, (Romans 5:8, But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.) Yes, Jesus Christ died on the cross as an act of Love and obedience to the will of God as He said three times, ‘Not of my will but of Thy will’ to accomplish God’s plan for redemption. Jesus Christ did not suffer on the cross for six hours so someone could say a little prayer while continuing in sinful behavior with the confident assurance of eternal life with Him in Heaven.

Paul would say in (Romans 6:1-2, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?) If you have been deceived by man made phrases to continue in sin, REPENT!

Dear Sir or Madam, Each year around the Thanksgiving Holiday, the Lord’s Warehouse, located at Albany, MO, the New Hampton Christian Church and several other area Churches help sponsor what we call “Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets”. Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets are Thanksgiving dinners, which include turkey or ham, vegetables, rolls, and dessert. These are boxed up and given out to needy families in the four county area, including Harrison, Gentry, Worth and Daviess. Towns that are included in this mission include Stanberry, Darlington, Albany, Martinsville, New Hampton, Bethany, McFall, Ridgeway, Eagleville, Cainsville, Mt. Moriah, Gilman City, Pattonsburg, Grant City and many more small towns in the four county area. We are not limited to just these towns, but will cover all areas in between.

The purpose of this letter is to notify you of the Thanksgiving Bounty Baskets mission and letting you know that we will be collecting names around the four county areas. There will be sign-up sheets at designated places within your area. We’re also praying that you would be willing to help donate for this mission. We’ll be collection monetary donations throughout the months of October and November.

You’re invited to come over and help with putting together the Bounty Baskets on Sunday, November 21, 2021 (depending on the COVID 19 status) at the New Hampton Christian Church. Lunch will be served before putting the Bounty Baskets together.

In 2020, due to monetary donations and the volunteer help of God’s many workers, we were able to feed 425 plus families in the surrounding areas. This year with the economy at its present state, we will be looking at, at least, 400 families in need of this God sent Bounty Basket.

All support for the mission will be greatly appreciated. God Bless! Thanks for your support of this mission.

Due to the COVID 19 issues at hand in our area, information in this letter may change at a later date.

This mission will go ahead as planned, just may be done a little different this year.
