(Psalm 40:1-3, I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry. He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, Out of the miry clay, And set my feet upon a rock, And established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—Praise to our God; Many will see it and fear, And will trust in the Lord.) As I ponder the day, the moment in time when the writer of this Psalm placed these words on parchment as they flowed from his broken heart, I can’t help but think of a beloved hymn. “I was sinking deep in sin Far from a peaceful shore Very deeply stained within Sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry from the waters lifted me Now safe am I Love lifted me! Love lifted me!” These two accounts of life take me back to a time when I would get stuck in that miry clay, literally. Many years ago, I would bunk feed calves with 4 five-gallon buckets, two in each hand. To those who would wonder the buckets weighed approximately 33 pounds each but being young and strong I would carry two buckets in each hand from the feed shed, through the gate into the dry lot to be spread along the feed bunks. This is one of the chores I enjoyed readily as part of farming life but as the year progressed from winter to spring the ground would soften to the point of being mush and muck mixed with the aftermath of the feed from the calves. Walking with this extra weight would eventually pull me down into the miry muck to the point of being stuck. There I was, stuck, able to move no more no matter how I struggled to pull my boots out of the fragrant mixture. Yes, there were occasions when I would struggle and lose my balance falling face forward into the sloppy mess, all the while surrounded by the hungry calves anxiously awaiting their morning meal. The solution was easy and obvious, let go of that which was dragging me down, just let go. How many folks today have an eternal reward awaiting but are unable to collect as they are stuck, unwilling to just let go.
