We have told you that GRRAD employees feel like one big family, and this week, these two outstanding EMTs are, in fact, family: Matt and Sara are father and daughter. Both have spent their entire careers as EMTs with GRRAD and both work mostly from the Albany station. We are so pleased and honored to have two generations working with us! Sara grew up in Albany, attending Albany R-III for all 12 years. She has been with GRRAD for a little less than 3 years, but she knew all about us from her dad. She respected and admired how he and his fellow first responders were able to assist, reassure, and treat people who needed emergency services, and to ultimately, save lives. She says, “I work for GRRAD because I like being able to help people on their worst days; it is a privilege! Sometimes it only takes a moment to know you helped someone by simply providing comfort, whether that be the patient or the family. Being an EMT is more than a job to me as, I am sure, it is to anyone who is in this line of work. It helps me every day knowing I have the ability to handle tough situations and to provide emergency medical care.” When Sara is not working, she enjoys fishing and swimming, but her absolute favorite thing to do is to play with her little daughter, Eliza. They love to go to the river and to make crafts together. Matt Putz is a bit of an enigma: many people in Albany know that he is an excellent EMT, but that may be all they know about him because Matt is a very private person. He didn’t really want us to talk about him for this article, but we finally convinced him to tell us a little bit about his life outside the ambulance station. We already know after his 12 years with GRRAD that he is always willing to do anything to help anyone and everyone who needs it! We know he can fix just about anything. We know that he is a caring, talented, and skilled EMT. We know he has a great family: his wife of 35 years, Kris; two daughters, Sara and Koty; and two beautiful granddaughters, Eliza and Koty’s daughter, Ruby. However, we did not know what an interesting life he led before moving to Northwest Missouri. We did not know that he had lived in three foreign countries in his youth and young adulthood and then in multiple states before landing in St. Louis where he resided for 10 years! Matt finally established roots when he moved to the Albany area in 1989. He attended NWMSU earning 2 associate degrees, one in agriculture and the other in applied science, and more importantly, he met Kris while he was there. He farmed near McFall for 20 years and worked for Gage’s Fertilizer and Grain for most of those years. Matt served his country by completing 3 years in the Army and 6 more years in the Missouri National Guard Unit in Albany. Another interesting fact about Matt is that his churchmates from the Albany United Methodist Church, where he and his family attend, describe his knowledge of the Bible as “truly remarkable.” Matt, who is not one to boast about his value to our community, says simply, “It is an honor to assist the people in the community where I live.” The Board of the Grand River Regional Ambulance District is extremely proud of Sara and Matt; we appreciate their tireless, compassionate work, and sincerely hope that just maybe, Ruby and Eliza will follow in their footsteps!

❦ Gary A. Macrander, 81, of Bates City, Missouri passed away on January 30, 2024 at his home. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Royer Funeral Home in Oak Grove, MO. Memorial Contributions may be made to the University of Kansas Health System or Tree Climbers, 109 Central Avenue, Pattonsburg, MO 64670. Gary was born on July 14, 1942, in Pattonsburg, MO, the son of Lee and Lila (Epperson) Macrander. He attended the United Methodist Church in Pattonsburg, MO. Gary worked at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City for 38 years. He was a lithographer and finished his career in ❦ Creative Design. He also served in the Missouri Army National Guard. On August 2, 1964, Gary married Joyce Macrander at the First Baptist Church in McFall. To this union was born Kyle Macrander and Danny Macrander. Gary and Joyce were married for 59 years. In addition to his full-time job, he loved farming and was an avid outdoorsman. He and Joyce loved traveling with their 5th wheel camper. He went hiking, hunting, and fishing with friends and family in Colorado and other places in the United States. Gary and Joyce’s favorite excursion was their road trip to Alaska. He also loved tinkering with old trucks and tractors. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nina Allen, and niece Lisa Feigly. His survivors include his wife, Joyce; two sons, Kyle Macrander (Lori) of Bates, City, MO, and Danny Macrander (Lori) of Archie, MO; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

❦ Charles “Charlie” Leland Williams, 88 years young, passed away on February 9, 2024 in Liberty, MO surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Judy. He was always a teenager at heart and his laugh and love of life will be greatly missed. Charlie was born June 20, 1935 near Albany, MO to his parents, Charles Thomas and Edith (Glick) Williams. He attended school in Albany and graduated Albany High School in 1953. After high school, he attended Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, MO. He attended church services throughout his life including Lone Star Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Albany, and the Knoxville Community Church of Knoxville, MO. He married Judith L Marsh on December 31, 1966 and with that union had 3 sons: Charles “Chas” Lee, born 1974; Thomas Jon, born 1976; and Andrew Franklin, born 1979. He also had a daughter, Rhonda Gale, from a previous marriage. Charlie was known to never sit still. He worked dozens of jobs and often from before the sun was up to well past sundown. As a young boy, he helped his father with milking cows on the farm and with a newspaper route. He would often tell of working as a pin setter at the bowling alley before mechanical pin setting became a thing. As an adult, he would go on to work at the General Motors Leeds Manufacturing Plant in Kansas City for 26 years. For many of those years he would wake at 3 AM to make the 2-hour drive from Albany to Kansas City for his morning shift, each day. He would also run a farm raising cattle, hogs, corn, and soybeans all while working full time at the car plant. After “early retirement” in 1988 he later worked as the Head Groundskeeper for the Albany Country Club and helped clean the National Guard Armory in Albany until he “retired” again in 2001. But his favorite job by far was driving a school bus for the Albany R-III School District. He enjoyed a regular bus route but loved taking teams to the ball games or band competitions. The call of “Charlie – Start the bus!” was heard in many rival schools near the end of games. Even after his third “retirement”, Charlie was still a fixture at the Albany ball games for years. Charlie had a love of history and the outdoors and would tell everyone about the 50 mile hike from Albany to St Joseph he took part in during his younger days. He enjoyed traveling and visiting all the different states and the National Parks and historical sites and battlefields. Ski trips, road trips, and cruises were all a big part of his life and he shared those joys with family. He also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He was a proud union member of the United Auto Workers, and was a staunch lifelong Democrat. He treated all people he met as if they were long-time friends. He also had a deep love of animals and rescued many cats and dogs that had once been abandoned. He would often work in the yard with his favorite cat following or riding along with Charlie on his golf cart. In 2005, Charlie and Judy built their dream home near Lathrop, MO to be near their children and grandchildren.They enjoyed many years entertaining and spending hours in the pool and hot tub. His happiest days were any that involved being around family and spending time with them. He is survived by sons Chas (Liberty, MO), Thomas (Liberty, MO), Andrew and wife Amy (Des Moines IA); grandchildren: Kiley, Corie, and Charlie; great grandson: Oliver (all Liberty MO); sister Maryann Shores (Savannah, MO) and nephew Randy Shores (Savannah, MO) and niece Wendy Shores (Medford, OR); sisters-in-law: Patricia Craven (Cleveland, TN), Sondra Worden (Meridian, ID); and brothers-in-law: Teddy “TJ” Marsh and wife Pam (Ellensburg WA), and Mike Marsh and wife Mikel (Red Bluff, CA). He also is survived by numerous cousins around the Gentry County area that he was extremely fond of. Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Roberson-Polley Chapel, Albany. Inurnment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Albany. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service on Saturday at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask for those to consider a donation in Charlie’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at https://www.stjude.org or the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/donate/_donation-tribute.asp Online condolences: www.robersonpolleychapel.com

Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.) Love, as part of common language it can be used as a ‘Noun’ or ‘Verb’. We can recognize these two parts of language as describing a thing whereas the other an action. I find it interesting that one of the definitions of the word ‘Love’ as a noun is associated with tennis and means ‘Zero’ or being ‘Scoreless’. God is telling us here in this little epistle of 1st John; true love is more than a noun used to describe a thing but is an action alive within the heart evidenced by deeds and not merely words from the mouth or an emotion brought about by a feeling. As I think about the Love we have from God, I think about the words of Jesus as he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount saying that we are to be a ‘light on a hill’, not to be ‘hidden under a basket’. (Matt 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.) If your love is real, it will be evidenced by your actions and not hidden within your heart as the god of this world will use the flesh to condemn us. (Jer 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.) God looks not only at the voice speaking within a person’s heart but at the evidence displayed thru love for Him. I have been told that people need not go to church or even support the ministry because, ‘God knows my Heart’. Isn’t true love displayed by the desire to be with someone?
