Missouri Honors Pioneers in Education
Six educators were honored as Pioneers in Education July 31, 2017 for their committment to public education in Missouri. This event took place during the 56th Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach. The following Educators were honored: Saundra Allen, Jefferson City; Robert Barrientos, Kansas City; Robert Buchanan, Sikeston; Larry Price, Albany; Beth Rutt, Warrensburg; Sally Wear, St. Louis. These pioneers were recognized for their tireless devotion to education. They have dedicated their lives to promoting excellence in education. This event marked the 43rd consecutive year that state education officials have presented the Pioneer in Education Awards, which honors teachers, school administrators, citizens and lawmakers for their distinguished careers and contributions to Missouri public schools. The following story is about local resident and honoree, LARRY PRICE.

And Receives The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Pioneer in Education Award Beginning in 1974, the Missouri State Board of Education and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education have honored selected individuals with the prestigious Missouri Pioneer in Education Award. Mr. Larry Price has joined this group of individuals that include long-serving teachers and administrators, dedicated local board of education members, college and university deans and presidents, and former legislators and governors by demonstrating unique contributions to Missouri public education. The following information was shared during the awards ceremony honoring Larry for his contributions as a Pioneer in Education. Larry was born in 1940 on a small farm in McFall, Missouri. He attended Crossroads Country School. In the summer of 1955, the McFall School was lost in a fire. The school district was consolidated with Pattonsburg where Larry graduated from Pattonsburg in 1958. Larry’s interest in education began early. He always respected his teachers and participated in many school activities. Shields. attend Northwest Missouri State University. He graduated in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After graduation he taught Physical Education, Industrial Arts, and Driver’s Education and coached several sports at South Nodaway R-IV. From 1968 to 1971 he served as Nodaway Holt R-VII School District’s Middle School Principal, taught Junior High Industrial Arts, and coached Boys’ Varsity Basketball. In 1970 Larry earned his Master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University and in 1972, he earned his Educational Specialist from Central Missouri State University and became the superintendent at North Andrew R-VI. While he was there the district advanced from an A to AA classification and passed a bond issue. In 1976 he became the superintendent of Albany R-III School District where he did his student teaching. In his first three years the school went from offering 52 to 72 units of credits and started one of the first early childhood programs in the state. Larry retired from Albany R-III School District in 1990. After retiring Larry became an area supervisor in the Northwest Region for the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Larry’s work with the Department began at the start of the School Improvement Program. He believes that every school in what he calls “the great Northwest” was better because of the program. His work was instrumental in helping the schools become Accredited with Distinction. Larry has served on numerous state committees including the Commissioner’s Advisory Committee, the Legislative Committee, and the Library Committee. He was named a Friend in with his children, left to right, Michelle “Shelly” Education and received an Emeritus Educator Award in 2000. Larry Walters, Debbie Collins, and Michael Price. He has been a member of MSTA and MASA. He has also been involved with the Optimist Club, Rotary Club, and Lions Club. According to Larry, he and his wonderful wife Rosalie, have been married for a long time! They have three children, Michelle, Debbie, and Michael who all graduated from Albany R-III School District. They also have three grandchildren, Nathan, Dylan, and Kaylin. Larry raised championship horses from 1982-2010. He had several horses that were State Fair Champions, Reserve World Champions, Futurity Champions, and World Champions. Larry retired from the Department of Education in 2015. He described the experience as one of the most rewarding. He has worked his whole life to make his schools and community better places. He is a pioneer in Education.
