Christian & Calvary Stanberry Churches

(John 13:5-8 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.” Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”) On the night in which Jesus was betrayed he sought to give the disciples an understanding as to what it means to be a Christian. In the days of dirt paths sandals were common footwear and the dust of the road would make for some very dirty feet. It was customary for someone to sit and have their feet washed by a slave or servant upon entering a dwelling or home. Jesus took the role of the servant yet known to the twelve as Master-Teacher. Peter would seek to understand why the Master would be involved in the dirt they had accumulated during their daily walk. Seeking to be the one to understand what the Master was trying to convey. (Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”) Thus, turning the experience into an act of ceremonial cleansing by washing the filth from those places I go, those things I touch and that which consume the thoughts of my mind. But there was much more to this than a mere ceremonial foot washing. (10-11, Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” For He knew who would betray Him;”) Eleven of the disciples were spiritually clean but pointing out the member of the group who goes along, and is even served, but has not been spiritually cleansed. The true believers, while being spiritually cleansed, still must come to the Master as our servant in humble acknowledgement of his cleansing power from the temptations of our daily walk in this world. Rise every morning and seek Jesus, with the same humility and faith as when we first believed. In Jesus love,

THANK YOU TO PHIL GRAY FOR HIS THOUGHTFULNESS AND GENEROSITY TO THE COMMUNITY OF STANBERRY THE PLACE HE CALLED HOME FOR 58 YEARS

Phillip Dean Gray

Born: October 16, 1939

Died: September 2, 2022

Son of Carl and Wynema (Nalle) Gray

Graduated High school: Pattonsburg, MO

Attended College: Bachelor’s degree from Northwest Missouri State Master’s degree from University of Missouri

Phil started his teaching career in Brookfield, MO where he taught for 3 years before moving to Stanberry where he would teach and coach for 34 more years. Phil coached varsity football, basketball and golf, Jr. High football, and boy’s and girl’s Jr. High basketball. Phil taught several different classes. Physical education, Driver’s education, business, typing, and health, and was head of the COE program when it started.

Phil was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Stanberry. He managed the swimming pool for several years and was active in both slow and fast pitch softball during his time off from school. He refereed high school and college basketball. Phil even taught his elderly neighbor lady how to drive after her sister, who did all the driving, died and left her the car. I believe she was in her late seventies.

The story of how the Gray family came to be in this part of the country would start back in 1883 with his grandfather Harry Gray. Harry was born in New York State in 1883 and would wind up in an orphanage where he would remain until 1885 when he would become an indentured servant to a family who eventually moved to the McFall area. The indenture papers indicated Harry would live with this family where he would be affectionately treated and cared for in health and sickness, and furnished sufficient food, clothing and medical care, and would attend school for at least four months each year. He would be taught some trade whereby he might be able to gain an honest living. He would remain in their care until he reached the age of 21 when he would be given one new suit of clothes suitable for attending church and other public assemblies and two suits for every day wear, and one new Bible. Harry would finish his indenture and marry Arisa Chana. They would have two children, one who died at birth and Carl, Phil’s father. Phil would also have an older brother Steve who preceded him in death. So the Gray lineage ends with Phil’s passing.

This story along with his involvement in many young people’s lives and later on their children’s lives along with being an active member of the Stanberry community is a big reason why Phil has chosen to leave his estate in a trust to be given to this community, its services and organizations. They include Stanberry RII School (Scholarships, concession stand & restrooms at the football field, and weight room equipment), First Baptist Church of Stanberry, Stanberry Senior Center, Pine View Manor Therapy Department, Gentry County Library, Stanberry Ministerial Alliance, Stanberry Community Betterment Committee, Stanberry Swimming Pool, Stanberry Fire Department and Stanberry Golf Course. He will also leave a portion to the Pattonsburg and McFall Cemeteries. (Joan Lockhart and Chuck Buntin would like to thank all who helped in settling Phil’s estate.)

CARD OF THANKS

On behalf of the HUBERT LUKE FAMILY we would like to thank our family, friends and the entire community for their outpouring of love and support since the passing of Hubert. We are truly blessed to lkive in a community that supports each other like family every day.

The HUBERT LUKE FAMILY

CARD OF THANKS

Thanks to all the church ladies for bringing all of the dinner and fellowship we had while we enjoyed the delicious food. Thanks also, for the bouquet from my church friends. Everyone should have just wonderful friends as I have.

CARD OF THANKS

We have been so blessed with family, friends, and community for the care and concern during Carsonʼs hospital stays. We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to the First Baptist Church ladies, the First Christian Church members and Young Adult Group, and many thanks to those that donated and/ or helped with the benefit breakfast: Amber Hahn, Joyce Slawson, Jackie Allenbrand, Brenda and Paul Farnan, Jeff Davis, D.J. and Tanya Noble, Rob Williams, Tony Saxton, and Robbins Lightning. We couldnʼt have done it without your help.

Also, thanks to the individuals who have donated to Carson's handicap accessible van fund. With your help weʼre halfway to our goal. Thank you so much, and God bless each and every one of you!
