We can recognize these two parts of language - one, as describing a thing, whereas the other, an action. I find it interesting that one of the definitions of the word ‘Love’ as a noun is associated with tennis and means ‘Zero’ or being ‘Scoreless’. God is telling us here in this little epistle of 1st John; true love is more than a noun used to describe a thing but is an action alive within the heart evidenced by deeds and not merely words from the mouth or an emotion brought about by a feeling. As I think about the Love we have from God I think about the words of Jesus as he spoke in the Sermon on the Mount saying that we are to be a ‘light on a hill’, not to be ‘hidden under a basket’. (Matt 5:16, Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.) If your love is real it will be evidenced by your actions and not hidden within your heart. The god of this world will use the fleshliness of the heart to condemn us. (Jer 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.) God looks not only at the self-voice within one’s heart but at the actions evidenced by love for Him. I’m often told that believers need not go to church or support ministry because, and this is a direct quote, ‘God knows my Heart’. Is separation a display of Love?

John Odes Rieks, age 73, of Concordia, MO peacefully passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022, at his home.

John was born to Richard and Laura (Warren) Rieks March 25, 1949, in Orland, CA. John was united in marriage to Teresa Lynn Ramage June 1, 2009 in Concordia, MO. John served in the Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He also loved his pets as well as traveling to the Caribbean.

John is survived by his wife Teresa Rieks; daughter Waynette Rieks from Nashville, TN;

A funeral service was held at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, MO Saturday, June 4, 2022. The officiant was Terry Hodges.

Memorial contributions may be made to Odessa Church Youth Activities and left in the care of the funeral home.

~OBITUARY~ MARK ALLEN HOLCOMB July 10, 1959 - August 16, 2021 Mark Allen Holcomb, 62 of Allacapan, Cagayan, Philippines passed away August 16th 2021 at the International Hospital in the Northern Philippines, with his wife, Rhita Holcomb, holding his hand, and his daughter, Sabrina Holcomb, on the other end of FaceTime, as Covid restrictions did not allow travel to be there in person. A Memorial Military Graveside Service will be held in his Honor at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery outside of Bethany, Mo. off of Hwy. 13, South on Interstate-35, right on H Hwy. Exit, Access Road W 210th Ave., At 2:30 pm on July 10th, 2022; which would have been Marks 63rd Birthday, followed by a picnic, where his memories and military medals will be on display.

Mark grew up in the Jameson, Jamesport, and Gallatin, Missouri area. He was a skilled carpenter and a mechanic. He enlisted in the United States ARMY, where he served multiple enlistments and tours. In the Army, Mark achieved great honors and became a decorated soldier. Mark spent 15 years at the Temp-Master Factory in Albany Missouri, moving up from a man on the floor to the engineer. After 9/11 Mark spent the last 20 years of his life as a contractor in the Middle East helping support our war efforts. Mark loved to work, he loved to build things. He was a compassionate father, a self-made engineer, a guitar player and a poem writer. He was nominated as “Poet of the year” in 2001.

Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Ina Kay Holcomb, his younger sister, Barbie Holcomb, his father, Floyd Holcomb, his older sister, Rose. Mark leaves behind his wife, Rhita Holcomb of the Philippines, brother, Mike Holcomb of Gentryville, Mo., sister, Robin of Paris, Mo., son, Brian Bashford of Warsaw, MO, daughter, Sabrina Holcomb of Albany, Mo., sons Jake and Joel of the Philippines; and several grandchildren.

Mark was buried in the Philippines not far from his and his wife’s hog and rice farm. However, the military has issued and placed a head stone for him at the gravesite of his mother and sisters. A place for his family and friends in the USA to remember him, if they could not be at the services or visit the place of rest in the Philippines. This service is his official Celebration of Life to honor him.

Each time a visit ends with family or friends, We part saying goodbye, for most that is how it ends.

We assume there will be another time, another day, Time to makeup, time to forgive, time to play.

We are reminded in time, this so painfully is not true, No time for hugs, kisses, all the little things we do.

We did not know this would happen when we talked last.

How could we have known our lives would soon pass.

Now on our way, looking back from the sky.

We know how special the word is, wanting to say goodbye.
