(John 13:34-35, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”) Jesus is giving the disciples and those who would follow a “New Commandment”, Love one another. In the world in which we live there is someone else giving commandments in various ways, (John 14:30, I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.)(John 8:44, You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.) Bringing forth these verses with the topic of ‘Love’ seems a little like mixing oil with water but this is where we are in society today. Common language has been confounded and the meaning of everyday words have been diluted to the point of confusion. Absolute reality in truth has been hijacked by the ‘god of this world’ (2: Cor 4:4.) Now, back to the ‘New Commandment’ of Jesus,LOVE. As a noun, (an intense feeling of deep affection; a great interest and pleasure in something – as a verb - feeling deep affection for (someone): like or enjoy very much) From the common dictionary definition I’m not impressed as it would seem to be a common emotion such as my love of strawberry ice cream, too much and I get a headache. Yes, Jesus said if you are truly His follower you will Love one another ‘as He loved us’. If we sit back and think about the sacrificial love of Jesus and His desire to fulfill the will of God, and not the flesh, there’s an additional element to the definition of ‘Love’. Jesus gave of himself for us thus pleasing our Heavenly Father for all who would ‘Repent and Believe’ in His holy name. By believing, we receive the love of God for eternity. Heavenly love is like nothing as described in common definition. Love God and love his people.
