n May, we pay tribute to our mothers and our nation’s war dead, but did you know that May is also Older American’s Month?

The theme for 2018, as announced by the Administration on Aging, is Engage at Every Age. The thought here is that you’re never too old (or too young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional well-being.

The U.S. life expectancy has lengthened significantly in the last few decades thanks to advances in medicine and technology, improved health care, an emphasis on diet and fitness, and reductions in smoking.

According to the American Psychological Association’s Office on Aging, today’s life expectancy is 84.3 years for men and 86.6 for women.

The number of Americans over age 85 is increasing faster than any other age group.

One out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past age 90; one in 10 will live past age 95.

Of course, the proportion of older adults living by themselves increases with advancing age. Among women aged 75 and over, almost half live alone.

Many folks believe that moving to a nursing facility is inevitable as we grow older but in reality, only about 13 percent of persons 85 and older reside in nursing homes. (apa.org/pi/aging/resources/guides/older. aspx) While the extension of life expectancy is great, we want to make sure those extra years are healthy ones, not ones spent in ill health.

So remember to exercise to maintain and improve strength, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Lead a healthy lifestyle and see a doctor for any changes or concerns about your physical and mental health.

Keep up with the news of the day as well as new technological advances. Take advantage of your community’s cultural events. Stay connected socially.

Share your wisdom with the next generation -- many of them are in great need of love and guidance.

Extraordinary Moms, Then and Now

By KATHy MEGyERI Each of us treasure our own special mothers who gave us life and so much more, but there are some mothers who nurtured not only their own children, but the world’s.

On this Mother’s Day, 2018, we take a look at some of these remarkable ladies.

Ann Maria Jarvis is the First Mother of Mother’s Day. She bore between 11 and 13 children, but only four survived to adulthood.

In 1858, she began Mother’s Day Work Clubs to combat childhood diseases and improve sanitation. She also nursed soldiers on both sides of the Civil War as a symbol of neutrality. After the war, Jarvis organized a “Mother’s Friendship Day” to help curtail post-war hostilities. Following her death, her daughter, Anna Jarvis, made it her mission to get Mother’s Day recognized as a holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation and made it official.

Irena Sendler, a mother of three, smuggled almost 2,500 Jewish children out of Warsaw’s ghetto during World War II, provided them with false identity papers, and sheltered them with adoptive Polish families or in care facilities. As a social worker, Sendler gained access to the Warsaw ghetto to check for typhus, a disease that the Germans feared would spread beyond the ghetto. Under the guise of inspecting sanitary conditions, she smuggled out babies and small children, hiding them in packages and suitcases. She once said, “Every child saved with my help is the justification of my existence on this Earth, and not a title to glory.”

Lou Xiaoying has been praised in China for saving more than 30 abandoned babies found in the trash. In 1972, she was making a meager living by recycling rubbish when she discovered the first child lying in garbage. She kept and raised some of the children she found over the years; others were passed on to relatives and friends.

Many of the babies abandoned on the streets by poor parents were the victims of China’s one child policy. She said, “I realized if we had strength enough to collect garbage, how could we not recycle something as important as human lives?”

Julia Ward Howe wrote the first Mother’s Day proclamation in 1870 asking women everywhere to join for world peace, a pacifist reaction to the carnage of the Civil and the Franco-Prussian wars. Married to the founder of the Perkins School for the Blind, she bore six children. She was an abolitionist, feminist, poet and women’s suffrage activist but is best known for writing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

Kathy Headlee Miner is the mother of 7 children, 2 stepchildren and founder of Mothers Without Borders. The nonprofit organization focuses on work in Africa where they care for orphaned and vulnerable children, provide safe shelter, food and clean water. Adult caregivers are offered literacy and business skills training.

Miner has also organized and implemented community development projects in Romania, Mexico, India, Indonesia and Bolivia.

Candy Lightner founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in 1980 after a drunk driver killed her 13-year-old daughter, Cari.

Before that, drunk drivers injured her two other children in separate accidents; her son suffered permanent brain damage. She rallied mothers across the country to help lobby for legislation that would prevent drunk driving deaths and injuries and curb underage drinking.

Theresa Kachindamoto, the paramount chief to over 900,000 Malawian people and mother of five boys, has greatly improved the lives of Malawi’s youth. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world with an HIV infection rate of 10 percent. A United Nations study found that more than half of the country’s women are married before the age of 18, and girls as young as 7 were sent to sexual initiation camps. In just three years, the chief annulled over 850 child marriages, encouraged girls to go to school, and made the community healthier in the process.

Florida Fresh: Catch, Slice and Grill

elebrate May with this recipe that combines food from the land and sea: fresh caught fish and Florida oranges. In May, oranges are still in season so they are tasty, economical and brimming with peak nutritional value. Pair them with your favorite fresh-caught fish such as grouper, snapper, snook, mahi mahi, mackerel, trout or sea bass. Cilantro and mint add extra zest, but it’s those juicy Florida oranges that make this dish really “sing.”

Grilled Fish with Citrus Slices Basic Ingredients: oil fish salt and pepper sliced oranges fresh herbs such as cilantro, basil or mint flavored butter (see below) Orange-Herb Butter Mash together one stick unsalted butter 1/2 tsp. grated orange zest 2 tsp. fresh orange juice 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 clove garlic, minced 2 Tbsp. chopped cilantro 1/2 tsp. coarse salt

Directions: • Set up the grill for indirect cooking and heat to medium-high. Clean and lightly oil the hot grill.

• Season fish with salt and pepper.

• Arrange sliced citrus on cooler side of grill and top with some fresh herbs and the fish. Dab the flavored butter on the fish.

• Cover and cook until fish is opaque in the center. There is no need to turn it. Leave fish on the grill for 20-30 minutes.

• Place on grill or grill basket over direct heat and cook for 10 minutes, turning regularly. Brush with olive oil to keep moist if necessary.

• Cook for additional 10 minutes over indirect heat. When meat is cooked through and no longer pink, remove from grill and serve.

CAUTION: Not All Tax-Free Bonds are the Same–Part 2

ast month we discussed the differences between tax-free individual municipal bonds and municipal bond mutual funds. While we compared them on the basis of diversification, liquidity, and income, there are other factors to take into account when considering these investments.

ACCESS TO BONDS—This is an area where the bond mutual funds can add value, as they are able to gain access to individual new issues of bonds that many retail investors cannot. When buying individual municipal bonds, investors are basically limited to the bonds available at the brokerage firm or custodian where they have their accounts. Often this selection is limited, both in number of bonds and size of each bond available.

COST—As with all investments, there are costs involved, whether you see them or not. With bond mutual funds, there is an internal expense ratio, which is essentially how much it costs to operate the fund on an annual basis. Additionally, depending on how your advisor is paid, there may be a sales load involved based on the share class of the fund. When buying an individual bond in a commission account—where the vast majority of

them are sold—the advisor’s compensation is embedded into the price of the bond. So, if the base cost of the bond is 100 cents on the dollar, and the advisor’s commission is 2.5 cents, the net price you will pay is 102.5 cents on the dollar. Often the trade confirmation will only include this net price, so investors are not aware of the true costs they are incurring.

FIXED MATURITY DATE— In many ways, this is the biggest difference between individual bonds and bond mutual funds. With an individual bond, there is a fixed maturity date when all investors will receive their principal back. This means that the exact total return, or yield to maturity, is known at the time of purchase. There is no maturity date for bond mutual funds, making the effect of changes in interest rates much more important, since bond prices move in the opposite direction of interest rates. Consequently, in a rising interest rate environment, even a very good bond fund can have years where it loses money.

Keep in mind that this series is not meant to advocate one type of taxfree fixed income investment over another, but rather to highlight some topics to evaluate when considering these types of investments.

Paperclip: Don’t Leave Home Without It I do not have an American Express card so in my case, “don’t leave home without it,” applies to a paperclip, one of the most amazing tools ever invented.

I always have one in my pocket.

Originally intended to clip together papers, it has proven to be a versatile little implement, capable of being transformed into an impromptu tie clip, hem holder or small slingshot for shooting spit-wads at a cute little gal in a classroom.

(They don’t call me Mr. Debonair for nothing!)

Developed in the 19th century, the paperclip’s machine aesthetic, low cost and utilitarian nature have made it withstand the test of time.

So much so, that May 29th has been coronated National Paperclip Day. A paperclip can be used for picking locks, picking teeth, opening handcuffs and as an emergency roach clip holder for hippies – not that I have any personal knowledge of such things.

It can keep you from getting lost, too. Straighten one out, magnetize it, stick it through a cork and float on water – it becomes a compass, always pointing north.

Of course, if you are lost, what are the chances you have a cork on

hand?

I have found them useful to clip notes to my shirt to remind me of important things such as meeting the deadline for this column or to feed the dog.

In my younger years, I formed them into going-steady, engagement and wedding rings. This is how I knew that my bride married me for me and not for any presumed wealth.

I know too that one day, should I be called upon to perform an emergency tracheotomy, I can quickly save a life and be a hero like MacGyver.

By now, you must be wondering how you can get involved and celebrate National Paperclip Day. Well, you can festively decorate a tree or your own hair with an assortment of the colorful clips. It’s also a tradition on this day to return all the paperclips you’ve inadvertently stolen from your workplace. You’ll find them in the little piles on your dresser where you’ve emptied your pants pockets or purse of coins, gum wrappers, McDonald’s receipts and other assorted items.

bok tower GardenS, lake waleS The grandmother of Edward Bok, a Dutch immigrant who published the Ladies Home Journal, told him to “make the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it,” so he set out to build “a beauty spot second to none in the country.” In 1929, the 250-acre Bok Tower Gardens was dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge and presented to the nation.

A sanctuary for native wildlife, the historic Olmsted Gardens, Wild Garden and Hammock Hollow children’s garden provide acres of beautiful gardens spaces. The Singing Tower houses a 60bell carillon that plays concerts at 1 and 3 p.m. The tower is built on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in Florida and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The military family moved continually from city to city and from country to country. She graduated from high school in Scotland, completed her bachelor’s degree at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and earned her master’s in music at the University of Miami.

In 1990, when she was 33, Allensworth was unexpectedly diagnosed with a rare cancer – Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of her left tear gland. After extensive surgery to remove the left eye, socket and tear gland, the tumor was successfully eradicated, making her the first person ever to survive this form of deadly cancer.

Allensworth’s father taught her how to sail.

It’s a skill she has pursued throughout her adult life and in 2000, she accepted a challenge to sail solo on the 12-foot dinghy, Prevail, in order to raise money and awareness for sailors with disabilities. Her remarkable 1,200-mile journey down the Gulf of Mexico, through the Everglades and up the Atlantic to Moorhead, N.C. was chronicled by cable TV giant, CNN. When she returned home she joined a group of likeminded friends and, in 2001, formed the non-profit, Sailability Greater Tampa Bay, which empowers people with disabilities to learn to sail on their own.

At the time, the type of special boats needed were made in Australia and would cost $5,000 each. So, Allensworth took the CNN video to the city of Clearwater and received approval to use the Clearwater Community Sailing Center on Sand Key. She approached local organizations and cobbled together enough donations to pay for the first six boats.

During this time, Allensworth met and married disabilities advocate, Ben Ritter, who commented, “There’s never a boring moment when living with Alder.”

Life took a twist in 2003 when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She and her father became the caregivers. Then, a few years after her mother’s death, Allensworth became her father’s fulltime caregiver until he died in 2017.

During that time, she studied nursing and wrote her memoirs. At age 59, she became a registered nurse.

After her father’s death, Allensworth needed time for healing and reflection so decided to tackle the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. It’s a 500-mile religious pilgrimage that begins in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France, crosses the Pyrenees, and continues westward across to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

She also submitted her memoir, Prevail: Celebrate the Journey, to the Richter Publishing 2017 Writing Contest and won a book contract. The book was published in February and is available on Amazon.

Her friend, noted sailor and former News Channel 8 anchor, Bob Hite, said: “Alder`s a remarkable woman that has taken on many challenges and still remains one of the most modest and humble individuals I`ve ever known.”

rom the moment we first lay eyes on them, to the last, sad goodbye, our pets supply us with unconditional love and happiness. In honor of National Pet Week, May 6–12, here are 10 tips to help you give your pet all the love, happiness and good health they deserve.

1. Give careful thought and consideration to the type of pet you select, making sure it is compatible with your home, lifestyle and budget.

Consider adopting an older shelter pet. Once you’ve chosen your new best friend, commit for life.

2. When you welcome a pet into your home, schedule a visit to the veterinarian for a wellness check, required vaccinations, and flea and tick control products. Continue with regular checkups.Make sure to get a sick or injured pet the care it needs as soon as possible.

3. Keep your pet at a healthy weight and avoid table scraps – many foods humans enjoy can be unhealthy or toxic for animals.

4. Always keep a collar on your pet with its name and your phone number.

Consider microchipping. Keep your pet safely confined to its own yard with available shade and water.

5. Spay or neuter so as to not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. If you choose to breed your pet, do it through managed breeding practices.

6. Give your pet plenty of love, attention and opportunities to exercise their minds and body.

If you are gone all day, consider adopting a companion for your pet. Playhouses, indoor climbing “trees,” and laser pointers will help keep cats active. Most dogs love a trip to the dog beach or dog park, obedience and agility classes, frisbee and ball games, and swimming in a pool.

Stir wet ingredients into dry just to moisten. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Bake for 55 minutes; it should feel firm and golden brown. Let cool completely before slicing.

New Treatment Offers Hope for Those with Parkinson’s Disease

A

fter a 20-year police career in Baltimore followed by nine years with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Dan Cotton, once an undercover detective, concluded that coping with his Parkinson’s diagnosis was the one case he could not solve, particularly after experiencing frightening hallucinations.

Cotton, now 53, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 2013, following the onset of a tremor in his right hand. The Port Charlotte resident continued as a community relations officer until a minor car accident and a failed physical abilities test ended his career.

He felt depressed and unsure about what to do next.

Support groups helped until a year-and-a-half ago, when new non-motor symptoms caught him by surprise.

He began seeing shadows of cats and dogs, responding to questions his wife never asked, and once, Cotton’s brother appeared in the passenger seat of his truck and attempted to give him driving instructions.

“He lives up north and is terrible at directions,” said Cotton. “I felt there was something mentally wrong with me. I didn’t know it was part of Parkinson’s.”

Dan Cotton Approximately one million Americans live with PD, but the onset of hallucinations and delusions (false beliefs) often comes as a surprise to patients and caregivers.

These symptoms will affect more than half of people with PD, yet only 10 to 20 percent of caregivers or patients ever report these symptoms to their doctor, pos-

sibly because they are embarrassed and/or do not realize that non-motor symptoms are part of the disease.

This spring, a survey of people with PD and PD caregivers conducted by the PMDAlliance found that nearly all respondents (90 percent) have experienced (or reported their loved one experienced) non-motor symptoms associated with PD. Nearly half felt these types of symptoms were harder to live with than physical symptoms of PD. Cotton talked to his PD specialist (a neurologist with special training) about his hallucinations and the doctor prescribed a fairly new drug treatment specifically approved by the FDA for his symptoms.

“After about three weeks, I noticed the hallucinations started to disappear,” he said.

Today, Cotton volunteers his time with his local PD support group and speaks to groups about his disease.

He encourages patients and caregivers to visit their doctor and discuss their symptoms openly so they can receive proper treatment.

“I’m sharing my story so others know,” he said.

So lauded Russian theater critic Anatoly Koni in an 1896 note to playwright Anton Chekhov after Koni had seen the stage presentation of Chekhov’s new drama called The Seagull. In contrast to the popular melodramatic approach of the day, Chekhov’s groundbreaking dialogue approach featured his onstage characters delivering lines that tended to skirt around the issues being discussed rather than addressing them directly.

Sony Pictures Classics’ 2018 version of The Seagull offers Chekhov’s iconic drama for today’s audience, who will experience a classic-in-the-making movie that tells a heartbreaking yet often amusing tale of friends and lovers, all of whom fall in love with the wrong people. Then Hollingshead, 51 52 53 his radio blaring at full volume, had 57 projected a movie onto his fluttering “screen.” 60 Why 63all that weird activity?

Hollingshead had been concerned about his mother, who was a rather large lady.

To Mrs. Hollingshead, a visit to an indoor movie house guaranteed great discomfort in a too-tight theater chair. Her son figured that if a film could be enjoyed from the comfort of a spacious auto seat, this could alleviate his mother’s problem.

And so was born the drive-in movie concept.

One year later, and with three other investors, Hollingshead bought 400 nearby acres and terraced 336 parking spaces in gentle front-wheel inclines, so that vehicles directly in front of carcocooned viewers wouldn’t block the screen.

On opening night, visiting movie patrons handed over 25 cents apiece to see a British comedy on a 40-by-50-foot screen. Customers instantly embraced Hollingshead’s brainchild—they could relax in their vehicles, smoke cigarettes, bring their kids, chat without being shushed.

Thanks to a prosperous economy and a growing car culture, drive-in theaters mushroomed in popularity after World War II. By 1958 the number of such sites— featuring about 25percent of all movie screens in America at the time—reached its peak with 4,063 locations.

The largest such venue was the All-Weather Drive-In in Copiague, N.Y., which boasted 2,500 parking spaces, an additional indoor sitting area, a playground, a shuttle and a full-service restaurant that offered rooftop dining.

The unavoidable passage of time brought unwelcome changes in the form of soaring land values and competition from increasing technology, especially with the development of popular home video systems.

While most former sites have morphed into housing developments or shopping centers, the remaining weedinfested lots and flea-market locales now stand as sentinels to still-vivid memories of silver-screen stories once told under nighttime skies.
