ust a few weeks ago, dread plagued Florida. After watching Hurricane Harvey wreak havoc on Texas, a new Category 5 hurricane -- in many ways the biggest, the baddest the Atlantic has ever seen -- was carving a 400-mile wide path towards the state.

Irma thrashed the Caribbean islands, flogged the Florida Keys and would cause the largest, most insane evacuation in the state’s history. People literally zigzagged like fire ants across Florida, trying to avoid the ever-changing forecast while facing clogged roads and a drought of gas and hotel rooms.

At first Miami and the East Coast were in the crosshairs. Then Irma continued her westward track and threatened to buzz-saw the east coast. At that point, the spaghetti models could only say with 100 percent accuracy: If you live in Florida, you are going to get smacked.

Then, Irma turned toward the area prone to the most catastrophic damage in America: Tampa Bay, where we live.

By then it was way too late to evacuate. Trapped alongside the Interstate with no gas and a hurricane barreling towards us was not our idea of fun.

After numerous trips to the stores we found that plywood, D batteries, water, bleach and canned tuna were nowhere to be found. Canned beans? In abundant supply. Oreos? Yes! Unfortunately we did not properly ration them and they were gone before Irma arrived.

Back in August, the Washington Post published a story saying that Tam-

pa Bay was ill-prepared for a major hurricane and that sea level rise would destroy the area.

“If a big one scores a direct hit, the damage would likely surpass Katrina,” wrote journalist Darryl Fears.

Then, sure enough, Anderson Cooper and his camera crew set-up shop on Tampa’s Riverwalk. Everyone knows the Master of Disaster arrives only when devastation of Biblical proportions is expected. You might as well get your ax and hang out in the attic and hope the high temperatures don’t kill you.

Please CNN, in the future, if Anderson must be here, hide him in an alley.

We’re scared enough as it is.

The eye of the hurricane passed east of Tampa Bay and trashed much of the state, though damage wasn’t as severe as predicted.

Still, many of our readers have endured terrible losses and heartache. We hope you will recover quickly and that you can take some time to relax and enjoy this edition.

Of course we’re talking about (well, raving about) the 38th annual Clearwater Jazz Holiday, slated for Oct. 19–22 at Clearwater’s Coachman Park. Start making plans now to attend what is tagged by many past attendees as simply the best four-day music gathering in the country.

Steve Weinberger, Clearwater Jazz Holiday Foundation CEO, says each day has its own special composition.

“Thursdays and Saturdays are known for their classic appeal and throwback vibes,” he said. “Friday is heavy on vintage, retro and swing revival themes.

Sunday’s niche is Americana and bluesy folk-rock.”

Soul, swing, and hot jazz The legendary Temptations and The Four Tops bring vintage Motown to the Thursday night stage.

Friday, swing revivalists Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox ooze crossover appeal by lending modern vibrations to yesteryear’s classic genres.

And, “New Orleans-based legend Jon Cleary is another great addition to the (Friday) lineup this year,” Weinberger said. “We love the music and feel of New Lifestyles After 50 • Suncoast • October 2017 • page 6

Orleans; that sound has always been a big part of the Jazz Holiday experience.”

The festival’s biggest names Kenny Loggins (Footloose, Danger Zone) and Michael McDonald (What a Fool Believes, Minute by Minute) perform Saturday night, followed by the traditional fireworks show.

Also on Saturday, keyboardist, composer and Grammy winner Jason Miles brings an all-star cast to the stage including Jeff Coffin and Carter Beauford (of Dave Matthews Band), Philip Dizack, Shaun Martin, Mino Cinelu, Gerald Veasley and Karen Briggs.

Sunday’s Americana theme features the Grammynominated/folk-rocking/crowd-loving Avette Brothers.

“They bring such a sincere authenticity and unique energy that make all their shows anywhere so very special,” Weinberger said.

The jazz fest sprang from humble beginnings when it started back in 1980 on the back of a flatbed truck. For the first three decades it was a purist-centered jazz festival with such headliners as Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, and Manhattan Transfer.

Over the years both the festival’s reputation and the attendance count have grown beyond all expectations and, with it, the scope of the music offered.

Since the mid-2000s, it has become a musical mashup of jazz, swing, blues, folk, soul, funk, Zydeco and old and new rock and pop. Rosters have included such diverse names as Buckwheat Zydeco, Bonnie Raitt, Kenny Loggins

Chicago, Gladys Knight, Sheryl Crow, Kool and the Gang, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

What’s allowed? What’s not?

Lawn chairs, blankets, sunglasses and sunscreen may be brought in from outside. No outside coolers, food or drinks, though, as a wide variety of food and drink options will be available.

Restrictions include no pets (except for service animals), no glass containers, no canopies or umbrellas, no audio or video recording devices, no weapons, no fireworks, no laser pointers.

Tickets Buy them early. Everything costs more the day of the fun. General admission/lawn seating tickets are $16 per day if purchased in advance. Kids 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paid adult.

Four-day and weekend discount packages can also be had.

Budget-busting holders of a $170 VIP Experience ticket will be seated within the first eight rows before the stage. The outlay also buys access to the secured VIP Hospitality Area with its abundancy of free food and up to three glasses of beer or wine. The ultimate crowded concert perk, though, just may be access to (are you ready for this?) the “executive restroom trailer.”

• Use a similar name as an established charity.

• Refuse to give you proof that a donation is tax deductible.

• Offer to provide an overnight shipping service to collect a donation (another way they try to get you to pay immediately).

Here’s how to stay protected from online charity scams: • Be careful of which websites you give your email to.

• Any organization asking you to send money overseas is a scam.

• Do not open email attachments.

Actual emails from real charity organizations will not typically include attachments. Opening an attachment from an unsolicited email may lead to a computer virus.

• Investigate the charity’s website.

Legitimate charities’ web addresses typically end in .org – not .com. You can also rule out any website that asks for your personal information – these are scams.

• Be cautious of people claiming to be victims. If someone contacts you directly for help with something like a disaster or disease, they are likely to be scamming you.

• Do not donate immediately over the phone. Do your research.

The Florida Orchestra opens 50th season with packed October

hat started as the merger of two regional orchestras five decades ago has grown into the premier – and largest – orchestra in the state. The Florida Orchestra opens its historic 50th anniversary season in October as the only performing arts organization that serves the entire Tampa Bay area, with concerts in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater. Just look at what’s packed into October: Carmina Burana (Oct. 6-8): An epic work you must experience LIVE. The orchestra fills the stage with the 150-voice Master Chorale of Tampa Bay for a huge wall of sound, under the baton of Music Director Michael Francis, to open the Tampa Bay Times Masterworks series.

he calendars of every country have certain days labeled as particular holidays, traditions or other celebratory events. We are alerted to these months in advance as we stroll the aisles of our favorite stores, finding shelves laden with decorations that cause us to exclaim: “ALREADY?!”

We associate certain months with particular foods. Valentine’s Day brings visions of chocolate.

Still, many of us eat it because it will make us “cool,” intellectually superior, or we will live forever because it is packed with every healthy vitamin and mineral imaginable.

Kale was brought to North America by the colonists in the 16th century. Later, Russian kale was introduced into Canada, and then into the United States, by Russian traders in the 19th century.

During World War II, people across the U.K. were encouraged to cultivate kale (and other vegetables) in the Dig for Victory campaign.

The vegetable was easy to grow and provided important nutrients missing from their diets because of the harsh rationing.

Favorite musical memories from years gone by

I

n their shows, Sam Moore and Dave Prater became a freewheeling bundle of collective energy, joyfully bobbing, weaving and gyrating, and all the while singing at full throttle. Popular among the many nicknames the duo earned was “The Sultans of Sweat,” as every high-energy performance left actual tiny lakes of perspiration onstage.

In Rhythm and the Blues, Atlantic Records’ Jerry Wexler said, “Their live act was filled with animation, harmony and seeming goodwill.”

Oh? That “seeming” goodwill apparently wasn’t directed at each other, as the pair endured a tumultuous partnership for the two decades they performed together. Moore and Prater would often arrive at concert venues separately, each demanding his own dressing room. During concerts, they usually managed to avoid eye contact with the other. Apparently the two once went a dozen years without even speaking to each other offstage.

Each artist had his own litany of complaints about the other. Moore said he abhorred Prater’s drug usage and constant griping about wanting to do a solo act with new material. Prater, in turn, groused that it was Moore who wanted to work alone and stop performing the Sam and Dave catalog

of hits—which, according to Prater, Moore never liked much anyway.

However, their onstage chemistry delighted appreciative audiences who only saw two African-American men having fun and loving their work.

In 1967, Sam and Dave recorded their biggest hit, Soul Man, on the Memphis-based Stax Records label. It reached Number One on the soul charts, Number Two on the pop lists and won a Grammy the following year.

Soul Man had come about when co-writer Issac Hayes was inspired by a 1967 TV newscast of a Detroit riot. Many black-owned buildings had been Sam and Dave m a r k e d w i t h a single, boldly lettered word: SOUL. This inspired Hayes and his writing partner, David Porter, to develop the Sam and Dave classic.

In November 1978, the Blues Brothers—comics Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi—performed Soul Man on Saturday Night Live, their remake on Atlantic Records reaching a whole new audience.

Despite their career-long personal turmoil, Sam and Dave were elected to the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which tacitly acknowledged the duo’s masterful transition of gospel music’s elements into the popular music mainstream.

Breast Cancer Risks and Symptoms

O

ther than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S. Some are at higher risk than others because of personal or family history and/or gene mutations.

Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that average-risk women who are 50 to 74 years old should have a screening mammogram every two years.

Breast Cancer Risks • Getting older -- most breast cancers are diagnosed after age 50 • Genetic mutations -- such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 • Early menstrual period – starting before age 12 • Late or no pregnancy – first pregnancy after age 30 • Starting menopause after age 55 • Not being physically active • Being overweight or obese after menopause • Having dense breasts • Using combination hormone therapy --estrogen and progestin • Taking oral contraceptives (birth control pills) • Personal or family history of breast cancer • Personal history of certain non-cancerous breast diseases • Previous treatment using radiation therapy • Women who took the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES) • Drinking alcohol -- risk increases the larger the amount consumed Research suggests that other factors such as smoking, being exposed to chemicals that can cause cancer, and night shift working also may increase breast cancer risk.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer • New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit) • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast • Irritation or dimpling of breast skin • Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast • Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area • Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood • Any change in the size or the shape of the breast • Pain in breast

ll of us have been impacted by Hurricane Irma to one degree or another. While my family and I personally incurred minimal damage, we have friends and other family members who are dealing with much worse.

One of the things I noticed in both the leadup to the storm, and the immediate aftermath, was the sense of community and service to others. While I believe most people fall into this category, a natural disaster like this unfortunately also brings out another type of person—the financial scammers.

It is important to be extra vigilant to protect yourself, your friends, and neighbors from these people. A few of the most common scams include: 1. Repair companies making offers that are too cheap. These companies lack proper licensing, training, and insurance coverage, and are usually looking for cash up front before promising to begin any work. The old rule applies—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. People asking you to sign contracts where you are signing your insurance claim rights over to them.

Never sign any document unless you fully understand it and consult with your insurance agent regarding the full ramifications of your coverage.

3. Federal Emergency Manage-

ment Agency (FEMA) imposters— wearing fake FEMA jackets—going door-to-door, asking for money to assist with the filing of federal flood claims. FEMA will never go door-todoor in this capacity.

4. Robo-calls from FEMA imposters, asking consumers to dial an 800 number to immediately make an insurance payment to prevent their policy from being cancelled. FEMA will never call in this manner, nor require that a consumer make a payment ASAP. 5. Individuals or companies asking you to “invest” in the recovery process, by paying money into a supposed startup repair company. They will ask for money up front to be a “shareholder” in the company. These people obviously have no intention of doing anything other than pocketing your money and running.

We are all familiar with the old saying, “Trust, but verify”. Verify, verify, verify! Ask for ID badges, take pictures of them, call the agency or company to confirm the person’s identity. Make sure that anybody you work with is licensed, and confirm the license numbers with the respective entity.

While we are at the mercy of Mother Nature, we can protect ourselves from these scam artists.

Medicare Open Enrollment Begins October 15 Understand Your Options

ctober brings Medicare Open Enrollment, an annual opportunity to compare, review and enroll in Medicare health and drug plans. This year, open enrollment begins October 15 and ends December 7.

Coverage begins January 1, 2018.

Understanding Medicare Part A, B, C and D and sorting out the differences between original Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans is key to making the right choice. So let’s dive in the alphabet soup and see what the government and private insurance companies have to offer.

Original Medicare consists of Parts A and B. • Medicare Part A covers inpatient care in hospitals, short-term care in a skilled nursing facility and hospice care. It will also cover some home health costs during recovery, but generally doesn’t cover long-term care.

(Often there is no premium but deductibles and coinsurance will apply.)

• Medicare Part B covers outpatient services like doctors’ visits, labs and X-rays; medical equipment and supplies; ambulance and preventative services.

Usually there is a premium for Part B. The co-pay

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage plans, are Medicare replacement plans sponsored by private companies that h av e co n t ract ed wit h Medicare. These plans must provide at the least as much coverage as original Medicare and often deliver more. They bundle hospital stays, doctors’ visits and other services; most provide prescription drug coverage. Some include vision, dental and other coverages not covered by Medicare. They usually cap out-of-pocket expenses and their premiums are normally lower than Medicare Supplement plans.

They usually have co-pays and deductibles.

Medicare Part D is prescription coverage run by Medicare-approved private insurance companies.

Those who have original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan, should consider purchasing Part D separately to cover drug costs.

Each drug plan has its own list of covered drugs (formularies) placed into different “tiers” according to costs.

Medicare Supplement Insurance, or a Medigap policy, is sold by private companies to fill the “gaps” that original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Some Medigap policies offer coverage for services that original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when traveling outside the U.S. Please note, Medigap policies sold after January 1, 2006 aren’t allowed to include prescription drug coverage so you must join a Part D plan if you want prescription drugs covered. Also, Medigap policies

generally don’t cover vision or dental care.

Specially-trained volunteers can assist you with your Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance questions by providing one-on-one counseling and information. Mama Mango!

“R

usty nails and manure! That’s all you need for that mango tree”, a retired farmer told me.

The mango tree measured about 5 feet tall in 2003. I was so naive when I bought it, I believed the salesperson when he said, “You should see mangoes in 6 months!”

In 2009, I reaped one mango and I jumped for joy. In 2010, another lonely mango was harvested. This time I questioned what am I doing wrong; after all I gave it compost and fertilizer.

While visiting an Assisted Living Facility, I met Mr. Raul, who

enlightened me about cow manure.

Immediately, visions filled my head about me following a cow with a shovel! Thank the universe for bags of Black Kow! H umans need iron in our systems and so do mango trees. I was told by Mr. Raul to hammer 4 or 5 rusty nails into the mango trunk and I would see lots and lots of mangoes.

Shortly after my nail piercing, “green-pea like orbs” showed up. I ran for my camera because I didn’t believe my eyes.

I doubted these orbs would ever amount to anything.

Two days later, they were the size of olives; five days later they evolved to the size of my fingers.

My babies were flourishing!

Mango Mania hit my tree and 4 months later, I harvested six bags of mangoes that each measured approximately 7 inches long! Fast forward into August 2017, Mama Mango stills produces mounds of her delectable fruit.

Halloween Rattlers With Halloween on the horizon, here’s a “scary” snake treat you and the grands can make together. With mango and brownies, rattler has never been tastier!

SERVINGS: 4 PREP TIME: 10 minutes Ingredients: 4 wooden skewers 4 lg. strawberries, hulled 1 tsp. store-bought vanilla frosting 8 mini-chocolate chips 1 lg. ripe mango, peeled, pitted, cut into1-inch cubes 4 store-bought brownies, cut into1-inch cubes 12 green grapes Directions: • Cut a slit in each strawberry head and add a very small piece of mango for the tongue.

• Place two dots of vanilla frosting on the top of each strawberry head.

• Put two mini-chocolate chips in the center of the white dots for the eyes.

• Thread the strawberry head on the wooden skewers and alternate threading the mango and brownie cubes behind it.

• Thread three grapes on the end of each skewer for the snake tail.

live in Tampa, Florida two blocks from Tampa Bay in a house surrounded by century-old oak trees.

On Friday night, September 8, things were looking very ominous for Tampa. Hurricane Irma was fast approaching and widespread destruction was predicted for the entire state.

Most frightening of all: this was being reported on by Anderson Cooper, the “A Team” of CNN, stationed on Tampa’s Riverwalk. That, to me, just confirmed the Tampa Bay Area was set for catastrophic devastation in the next two to three days.

Already there was no bottled water left on the shelves. No available plywood to board up windows.

No automatic phone chargers. No flashlights or batteries for radios. Gas was in short supply. I had been getting calls all day from my sons telling me to “get out of Dodge.”

I had stashed my dad’s World War II uniforms and dog tags in the washing machine to protect them, and put the kids’ baby books and picture albums in the dryer. Thinking about taking anything else of value was too overwhelming.

The mass evacuations from South Florida were beginning to clog the highways, and gas stations along I-75 were closed due to lack of fuel.

We made a quick decision to leave rather than wait for daybreak. At 1:30 a.m., we loaded up the car, hustled our dog, Lola the Lab, into the already Bumper to bumper night traffic as evacuees tried to flee Irma’s path

cramped back seat and set out. Loaded with nonperishables, $500 in cash, and a full tank of gas, we headed to I-75 in the shroud of darkness.

I glanced back at my house as we pulled away with a sinking feeling that perhaps we’d never see it intact again.

The highway traffic at 2 a.m. was bumper to bumper. The gas gauge was moving rapidly. We were not.

Armed with a thermos full of coffee, I guzzled it down to assure wide-eyed wakefulness. Soon, I had a full bladder. As we crept along I-75, the gas stations had gone dark. I began to experience the angst of a refugee. Where were we headed? Would we make it there or be stranded alongside the road during the hurricane? And where in the heck would I pee?

The next public rest area was miles away. There was no way I was going to make it. With trepidation, we pulled off the highway onto a dark, desolate, litter-filled stretch of land that sported an abandoned gas station.

A sense of the surreal enveloped me. I should be soundly sleeping in my comfy king-size bed, not relieving myself over dirt with the wind whipping around my ankles. Of course there was no toilet paper.

We arrived in Atlanta mid-morning. By 2 p.m., we were able to check into a brand new Residents Inn that had opened only four days before.

When we woke, we remained glued to the TV monitoring Irma’s haphazard path.

Sometime during that long day, I did make a pit stop at a Barnes and Noble just steps from our hotel. I bought three books on resilience after a natural disaster. “See,” I said to myself, “even if I lost everything, I have already taken positive steps toward rebuilding my library.”

Glued to the TV, my anxiety continued to increase exponentially. They were predicting powerful storm surges. Flooded roads. Downed trees. Power outages that could last for days, if not weeks.

A n d m o s t worrisome? My oldest son had stayed behind to ride the storm out.

Being a public official, he was committed to being both present and available.

None of us slept that Sunday night. Weather alert updates continued to confirm Hurricane I r m a ’s c a p r i c i o u s flailing around the entire Tampa Bay Area.

Fortunately for us, and unfortunately for others, Irma’s eye landed east of Tampa Bay. She did her damage alright, but nothing like what had been predicted.

“Clearly, Tampa had not only dodged a bullet,” as one pundit remarked wryly, “but a cannon.”

So what did I learn from Irma?

• Buy suitcases with the capacity to store a charge — which thanks to a present last year from my sons we did have. Of course, we had never used that benefit nor did we know how — but we quickly learned and plugged those suckers in and charged them up as back-up for our cell phones as soon as hurricane forecasts began appearing on the news.

• Don’t throw out all your old battery operated radios. Keep a couple handy and loaded with fresh batteries.

• Appliances are great places to store things you want to save, even microwaves. Just remember to empty them before using!

• Start stocking up on supplies at the beginning of the hurricane season.

• And always, ALWAYS, take toilet paper with you should you choose to evacuate.
