Back to School…For Adults Too A

s the children or grandkids return to school, this time of year can often trigger memories of our own school days – the football games, theatrical productions, drive-in movies.

That first kiss. The embarrassing prom fiasco or the pretty girl who ran away when you asked her for a date.

Those were the best of times, and occasionally, the worst of times, but they brought us together and we made some besties along the way.

Miss those days of making friends and gaining knowledge? Would you like to finish that degree, brush up on your technology skills, or learn how to take really great photos with a DSLR camera?

We say: Go for it!

The process of learning, engaging and socializing builds neural connections, strengthens cognitive skills and boosts overall mood while helping to stave off dementia and depression too.

And returning to the classroom could payoff with an encore career, a part-time business or a new hobby that will fill your day with fun and creativity.

Now it’s perfectly natural to feel some degree of fear. You may be afraid you won’t fit in with a younger crowd, that it will take up too much time, or be too expensive.

I know. I felt all of the above when I decided to pursue my certification in photography to complement my journalism degree. But I put those worries aside and focused on the benefits.

To my relief, I made many friends – of all ages. I came up with a workable plan that would fit in with my career schedule and family commitments. I was able to obtain a senior tuition waiver at St. Petersburg College, which covered everything except lab fees, books and supplies.

Florida residents over 60 should look into this senior perk.

The privilege is usually granted on a space available basis, so see a counselor in the admissions department of the institution you would like to attend for all the details.

Another, perhaps more relaxing option is to take classes through Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes on campuses like

Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, its Palm Harbor support location, and through the University of South Florida. These non-credit courses don’t have assignments, tests or grades and cover subjects like biography, culture and travel, film and television, Florida studies, history, theatre, science and visual arts.

The annual OLLI membership is $59 per person and provides class discounts, but non-OLLI members are welcomed to participate.

Most classes and activity fees vary from $10 to $45 for members. Many are single session classes offered for a couple of hours in a morning or afternoon.

Or consider attending technical and vocational schools, which can lead to professionally recognized licenses and certificates in everything from cosmetology to pastry arts to welding. Since most programs can be completed in a year or less, it’s a nice option for those looking for a career change.

Many community colleges and universities offer weekend and night classes for those that wish to advance their personal or workforce skills in such areas like web development, Photoshop, drone operations, or personal finance.

For the artistically inclined, local art centers usually offer studio classes for adults in subjects like painting, sculpting, photography, jewelry making and woodworking.

Whatever you pursue, your brain will enjoy the workout.

And you’ll feel good about improving your chances of remaining sharp and self-confident in the years to come.

It will also demonstrate to the younger generations that learning is a valuable, lifelong pursuit that enhances your wellbeing and general welfare.

Paul Simon Says Farewell to Fans in Final Tour

S

ixty-one years ago, two 15-year-olds from Queens, N.Y., calling themselves Tom and Jerry (since they thought people would make fun of their real names), cut a record titled Hey! Schoolgirl. The 1957 ditty managed to reach the middle of Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart, then faded away, as did the Tom and Jerry name.

But Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel persisted and in 1965, found themselves at the top of Billboard with their breakthrough hit Sounds of Silence. With Simon’s memorable melodies and timeless poetic lyrics often wrapped around Garfunkel’s angelic but muscular voice, the two shot to stardom – then promptly split up in 1970, at the height of their fame.

Now, at age 76, the legendary Simon is embarking on his Homeward Bound Farewell Tour. He’s winding his way around North America and Europe, promising audiences “a historic evening of career-spanning hits and timeless classics.”

The final leg of his tour includes stops in Tampa, Sunrise and Orlando on Sept. 7, 8, and 11 respectively. (He wraps everything up in New York City in midSeptember.) The 140-minute concert features a massive video screen showing a montage of Simon’s journey through the years, a few slightly awkward dance steps, numerous solo hits and some lesser known selections.

Along the way, there’s a sprinkling of Simon and Garfunkel favorites, although wisely not Bridge over Troubled Water, a demanding major work that requires Garfunkel’s soaring boy-soprano chops. Simon does end each show with a somber Sounds of Silence, offering it as a gentle, melancholy acoustic work rather than the familiar electrified folk-rock version.

“I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I’d consider bringing my performing career to a natural end,” says Simon, “Now I know.

Simon, who never avoided a new musical challenge, spent two years on Graceland, which later earned him a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

He breathes the rarified air of a few other 1960s-based music gods that include John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan, all songsmiths whose creations—anthems, actually—have elevated popular music to an artistic level light years beyond standard rock ‘n’ roll material.

Simon is a oneman Who’s Who of the recording industry, having earned 16 Grammys for his collaborative and solo works, a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a spot on a Time magazine list of “100 People Who Shaped the World.”

Along the way he has raised millions of dollars for a variety of worthy causes and is one of the co-founders of the Children’s Health Fund, which has helped to provide needed doctor visits to over 3 million low-income patients around the USA. He concludes, “I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts.”

Simon saw his solo star rise to the stratosphere with the release of 29 enduring Top 40 discs, including Mother and Child Reunion, Kodachrome, Loves Me Like a Rock, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, Slip Slidin’ Away and Late in the Evening.

Among his 13 highly lauded LPs was Graceland, a 14-million-seller and Simon’s best-known recording.

On Sept. 3, 2017, after traveling over 3,100 miles from the state of Washington, my husband and I and our beloved pets arrived in Florida to begin the next chapter of our lives.

Little did we know Hurricane Irma would greet us at the front door.

After an exhausting 10-day cross-country trek, we began to unpack the rental truck in the 100-degree heat. News of Hurricane Irma dominated the air waves. We hoped to wait out the storm in our vacation rental, a 10-minute Lydia and Darren Wagner at a Florida Welcome walk from the beach, but as Irma barreled Center, one week before Irma’s arrival. toward Florida, we decided instead to shelter with our pets in a middle school.

On Sept. 10–one week from our arrival to the Sunshine State–Irma came calling.

The following day we were back in our vacation rental, without electricity, but with water, sunshine, blue skies, and our unwavering spirits.

n the Sony Pictures Classics offering The Wife, Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) accompanies her husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce), a celebrated writer, to Stockholm.

There Joan, a gifted writer herself, is asked, “Do you have an occupation?”

She pauses, considers her answer, then responds with a tight-lipped, “I do…I am a kingmaker.”

from Sweden brings Joe big news: he will be named the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Before long the couple are on a Stockholmbound jet, where they encounter a pushy writing hack named Nathan Bone (Christian Slater). He’s doing research on a warts-and-all biography of the world-renowned Joe, who rudely dismisses the interloper. The persistent Bone, who has uncovered one of Joan’s superb college writing projects, “The Faculty Wife,” later convinces her to meet him for a drink. That’s when the story kicks into a higher gear, setting the stage for an eventual cringe-worthy climax.

In a flashback to 1958, we meet the younger, insufferably pompous (and married) writing professor Joe (Harry Lloyd), who seduces and marries his star pupil, Joan (Annie Starke—Close’s daughter in real life). In time, the new Mrs. Castleman relinquishes her writing ambitions to become a full-time career-builder for Joe, a talented and charismatic storyteller. He’s also a serial philanderer with an adolescent-level need for approval.

Back to 1992, at a pre-ceremony party in Stockholm, an effusive Joe offers an ironic toast to Joan: “My wife’s not a writer, thank God. If she were,

I’d have permanent writer’s block.”

Joan, realizing with a slowly dawning horror that she has assigned herself the passenger seat in her life’s journey, reaches her breaking point, having made the pronouncement that, “There’s nothing more dangerous that a writer whose feelings have been hurt.”

What happens, predictably, isn’t pretty.

“I think it speaks to the subtleties of the malefemale relationship, and women who have defined themselves through men to their detriment,” she said.

The six-time, Academy Award-nominated Close gives an understated, Oscar-worthy performance here that ranks alongside her previous best efforts (Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction). So much so, that Hollywood is already abuzz with talk that this film could finally snag her the long-overdue award.

Directed by Bjorn Runge with a screenplay by Jane Anderson, The Wife is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Meg Wolitzer.

The movie opens August 3.

Rockin’ Into The Sunset

The recent tour of Paul Simon, 76, has given music fans reason to consider that he isn’t alone when it comes to making music well into one’s “retirement age.” Here we pay tribute to six aging but active superstars – seniors who haven’t lost their love of performing.

Willie Nelson At 85, Willie Nelson is still going strong. The grizzled, twin-braided Texan has performed on over 100 albums. Along the way, he’s been through four marriages, health issues, drug busts and tax problems. He’s still on the road and enjoys being there. (And we love seeing him at the Florida Strawberry Festival.)

Nelson moved to Nashville in 1960 to write songs that have since become country classics (Crazy, Hello Walls, Night Life). His own hits have included Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain, Always on My Mind and with Julio Iglesias, To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before.

And not to forget the iconic tune that cheerfully defines his concerts: On the Road Again.

Mike Love As a young man in Los Angeles, native Mike Love, now 77, enjoyed family get-togethers and singing with his three Wilson cousins. In 1962, they formed the Pendletones (named after the Pendleton shirt) and recorded an original 45 called Surfin’.

But their bush-league record company disliked the quartet’s name and – without permission – stuck the name Beach Boys on the single, which became a local hit.

Over the years, Love and group leader Brian Wilson composed dozens of classic Beach Boy tracks that lauded surfing, cruising, hot rods and teen romance. Love is now the only original member on the always-successful tour circuit, although backup musician Bruce Johnston, 76, has been a Beach Boy since 1965.

Cher Cher has sold 100 million records worldwide—and that’s not counting the 40 million more sold when she was half of the duo Sonny and Cher.

Cherilyn Sarkisian quit high school at 16, married Salvatore “Sonny” Bono at 18 and found worldwide success with him.

On her own she has recorded dozens of best-selling singles and albums and, as a movie star, earned an Academy Award in 1987 as Best Actress for the film Moonstruck.

At 72, the superstar is still recording, still acting, still performing live, still knockin’ ‘em dead as only she can. See her in this summer’s movie musical Mama Mia! Here We Go Again.

The Rolling Stones They wanted to be the anti-Beatles and favored Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley over Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly. Formed in London in 1962, the Blues Boys changed their name after hearing an obscure Muddy Waters track called Rollin’ Stone.

They’ve been called The Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band in the world, and who’s going to argue with that? Now in their 56th year together, the current tour lineup includes original-member vocalist Mick Jagger, 75, guitarist Keith Richards, 74, and drummer Charlie Watts, 77. Second guitarist Ronnie Wood, who came on board as a Stone in 1975, is the “kid” at age 71.

Diana Ross She was born Diane Ross in Detroit in 1944. At 15, she and a few fellow girl singers from the projects formed the Primettes, a sister act to the Primes, who were local guy-group friends. In time, the Primettes morphed into the Supremes, and the Primes found stardom as the Temptations.

The Supremes reigned as Motown’s most successful 1960s recording act, becoming Billboard queens with 12 No.1 singles. Starting in 1967, they officially became Diana Ross and the Supremes, and in 1970 Ross began a solo career that saw an eventual total of

27 singles reach the Top 40.

On concert tours, the still-gorgeous 74-year-old gladly rekindles many goldenoldie memories with her numerous, now-classic hits.

Neil Young At 72, Neil Young has been a singer/songwriter/ record producer in a still-active career that has earned him three Grammy Awards and a ton of respect.

Young hails from Toronto, Ontario, where he formed high school rock groups before dropping out to make music full time. He met California musician Steven Stills, and the two became part of the celebrated L.A. ensemble Buffalo Springfield.

Young later formed the country-rocking Crazy Horse band before reuniting with Stills as part of the short-lived quartet Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. He soon wanted more control of his own destiny, though, and split for a successful solo career.

Author: Lauren Groff 2018, Riverhead Books 275 pages

merican novelist and short story writer Lauren Groff must have been born with a golden pen in her hand as her works keep making it onto the New York Times Best Sellers lists. Her third novel and fourth book, Fates and Furies, was not only a bestseller and winner of numerous awards, in 2015 it was named Amazon’s Best Book of the Year and President Obama chose it as his favorite.

Now, the storyteller has unleashed her newest creation, FLORIDA. It’s a compilation of 11 well-crafted short stories, previously published elsewhere (Esquire, New York Times) and considered some of her finest.

Be forewarned: This is not your usual, shiny “Come and enjoy Florida’s sun, beaches, theme parks and recreational lifestyle,” PR piece. It’s a raw, bold look at the state’s menacing, damp and dark side.

It’s no wonder that the choice for the cover is a copper-toned Florida panther, a foreshadowing of a state that is still wild, always surprising and filled with crazy people and bizarre events.

Born in Cooperstown, N.Y. and educated at Amherst College and the University of Wisconsin, Groff is married, a mother of two, and has lived in Gainesville for more than a decade.

About her adopted hometown she writes, “I decided that if I had to live in the South, with its boiled peanuts and its Spanish moss dangling like armpit hair, at least I wouldn’t barricade myself with my whiteness in a gated community.”

In an interview with Esquire, she explains her reason for setting her stories here. “Florida is one great massive single place. It’s a collection of places all radically different from each other. Miami and Gainesville and the Keys and Tallahassee could be different states.”

She talks about the “queer dank musk of Central Florida where people decorated their yards with big rocks and believed they could talk to God.” As for Sarasota, it’s so posh and sedate, it “barely qualified.”

Groff explores the Sunshine State as a hot and dense “Eden of dangerous things.” True, there are snakes and plenty of other worries in this beautiful, alluring garden.

So reader, prepare to be unnerved by her works of “fiction” which, she says, offer her the “freedom to exaggerate, change, distort, and tell slantwise,” while also admitting in an NPR interview that, “there’s no such thing as fiction that is not somewhat autobiographical.”

When you are self-employed

ost people who pay into Social Security work for an employer who deducts Social Security taxes from their paycheck, matches that contribution, sends taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and reports wages to Social Security.

However, self-employed people must report their earnings and pay their Social Security taxes directly to the IRS. These taxes will help determine eligibility for benefits later.

One is self-employed if he or she operates a trade, business, or profession, either by themselves or with a partner. They report earnings for Social Security purposes when filing a federal income tax return. If net earnings are $400 or more in a year, earnings must be reported on Schedule SE. Net earnings for Social Security are gross earnings from a trade or business, minus allowable business deductions and depreciation. Some income doesn’t count for Social Security and shouldn’t be included in figuring net earnings.

wanted to update a previous article, possibly the one that has elicited the most questions and feedback of any I have written.

Regular readers may recall that a couple of years ago I was the victim of identity theft. The short version is that somebody in Miami put a forward on my mail, so they could apply for credit cards in my name without my knowledge. By the time I got the form letter from the Postal Service—and sniffed out the fraud—a total of four cards were in the process of being opened in my name with $15,000 limits on each.

In the midst of cancelling them all, I was implored to activate a credit freeze at each of the three bureaus, as the bandits normally hit their victims with a first wave of identity theft, and then come back a few weeks later for more.

I immediately placed the freeze on credit reporting for both my wife and I and soon learned that it had worked, as I got “rejection” letters from three more cards a few weeks after the initial incident.

Ever since, I have advised all my clients, family, friends, etc., to freeze credit reports for themselves and family members at all three credit bureaus: Transunion, Experian and

Equifax. (It is important to do so at all three since different entities use different bureaus to pull credit.) A hard credit freeze shuts down all credit inquiries—both legitimate and illegitimate—as long as it is in place, thus making it harder for identity thieves to open up accounts in your name. The act is permanent, unless you choose to temporarily lift or permanently remove it (with a specific PIN provided by each bureau).

There has always been one minor nuisance with this process in Florida—each of the bureaus has charged a $10 fee to initiate the freeze or to temporarily lift it. However, as of July 1, per the Florida Department of Financial Services, there is no longer a fee associated with freezing or unfreezing credit.

In my mind, this removes any final impediment to putting a hard freeze on your credit. Take it from someone who has been through the process – a few minutes now can potentially prevent disastrous financial implications down the road.

ost people who pay into Social Security work for an employer who deducts Social Security taxes from their paycheck, matches that contribution, sends taxes to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and reports wages to Social Security.

However, self-employed people must report their earnings and pay their Social Security taxes directly to the IRS. These taxes will help determine eligibility for benefits later.

One is self-employed if he or she operates a trade, business, or profession, either by themselves or with a partner. They report earnings for Social Security purposes when filing a federal income tax return. If net earnings are $400 or more in a year, earnings must be reported on Schedule SE. Net earnings for Social Security are gross earnings from a trade or business, minus allowable business deductions and depreciation. Some income doesn’t count for Social Security and shouldn’t be included in figuring net earnings.

ummertime travel is at its peak and many are choosing to make Florida beaches their vacation destination. Blue skies, palm trees, pleasantly warm waters and the ocean’s cooling breezes beckon residents and tourists alike to visit our gorgeous coastlines.

So it should come as no surprise that when TripAdvisor announced the best U.S. beaches for their 2018 Travelers’ Choice Awards, Florida dominated the pack. The state boasts six winners in the top 10 slots; Hawaii has three, and California, one.

Clearwater Beach reclaimed bragging rights as the No.1 beach after winning the same title in 2016 – and that was after USA Today readers picked it as the Best Beach Town in Florida in 2013.

Other Florida seashores that made the top ten list include Siesta Beach in Siesta Key, South Beach in Miami, Fort Lauderdale Beach, St. Pete Beach and Hollywood Beach. Each has its own beauty and intrigue as you will see in our guide.

Clearwater Beach Postcard-perfect Clearwater Beach on the Gulf of Mexico is always ready for a closeup.

With its 2.5 miles of powdery, sugarwhite sand, clear and shallow waters, abundance of shops and restaurants,

attractive hotels, and variety of entertainment options, it makes an ideal playground for families and travelers of all ages. Attractions include the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, home of Winter the dolphin; a Pirate Cruise, ferry rides to the beautiful and untouched Caladesi Island; numerous fishing and boating tours, and the Sunsets at Pier 60 Daily Festival.

Siesta Beach At the No 2. spot on the list, Siesta Beach on Siesta Key is less than 30 minutes south of Sarasota. With eight miles of pristine sands, it’s a great spot to collect seashells and sand dollars. Interestingly, the sand here is 99% pure quartz (silica sand) making it soft and cool on the feet, even in the heat of the summer. It’s believed that the sand is millions of years old, having originated in the Appalachians and carried down the mountain rivers until deposited on the shores of Siesta Key. The Travel Channel voted Siesta Beach the best sand beach in America in 2004 and Dr. Beach named it the Best Beach in America in 2011 and 2017.

The promenade is always full of people walking, biking, and strolling with their dogs. Ocean Drive, one of the main drags, is known for its well-preserved art deco architecture and outdoor cafes that offer a ring-side seat to all the action. The WolfsonianFIU, a museum, library and research center, is among the attractions in the Art Deco District.

Ft. Lauderdale Beach Taking sixth place on the list, Fort Lauderdale Beach is another beloved locale because of its miles of clean, sun-kissed beachfront, on-duty lifeguards, water activities, and tall palm trees waving in the Atlantic breezes. The city’s curvy, awardwinning wave wall and signature beachfront promenade highlight the beautiful coastline, which is punctuated by an array of shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafes. In addition to its chic shopping and dining scene, vacationers enjoy visits to the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens and the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park.

The historic Don CeSar resort is located at the southern end of the beach. For a diversion, one can head over to Corey Avenue where a variety of funky specialty shops and galleries enhance the area’s charm.

Hollywood Beach Retro cool Hollywood Beach in Hollywood (located between Fort Lauderdale and Miami) takes the No. 8 spot in this list of best beaches. Prized by reviewers for its calm waters, available bathroom facilities, live entertainment, and clean and lovely surroundings, it features a Boardwalk where people bike, walk and enjoy food and drink at nearby restaurants. o you ever feel like a stiff and rusting Tin Man? Forget the oil can.

Instead, incorporate some stretching into your daily routine. It will improve your physical fitness, energy level, mood and general well-being in many ways. Stretching also promotes more fluid and natural movements, better balance and coordination, too.

One of the most important benefits is greater range of motion. When you stretch you work muscles and tendons, rather than ligaments which are not designed to be stretched. If you overstretch a ligament, you may lose the stability and support needed to avoid tissue injuries and muscle strains.

Those of us who sit in front of a computer all day can end up with the posture of a cave dweller so take time out to stand up, move around and stretch out those tight chest, neck and shoulder and hip muscles. Great posture helps us feel better and look more attractive and confident too.

When we stretch before and after a workout, we improve blood flow to muscles, thus reducing soreness and improving recovery time.

Remember to take 10 to 15 minutes a day for this important wellness activity and you’ll look and feel better in no time.

I

learned recently that the origin of the phrase “dog days of summer” was based on the rising of the star Sirius (the dog star), a time of year that the ancients associated with heat, thunderstorms and mad dogs.

That got me to thinking about my Labrador Retrievers, Bette and Davis.

Now they weren’t mad dogs, but I was madly in love with them.

How I miss their dog drool that was my constant summer fashion accessory. And, the way they’d run up to me and shake out their fur after a swim in the pool.

As puppies, they were more energetic than we, of course. But as dogs do, they matured quickly and we became contemporaries, eventually sharing the same inevitable signs of aging.

Take nature’s highlights, for example. As their faces grew white and their fur became speckled with “glitter,” people commented that they looked good for their age. Since I no longer dye my white hair, I can only hope the same applies to me.

Bette suffered from arthritis.

So, do I. Hers was persistent; mine, only occasional. Even though she limped, she remained in high spirits. I, on the other hand, have a tendency to whine.

During our park outings, I watched younger dogs chasing balls, remarking to my pets, “Remember when you used to do that?” I also saw younger people

jogging with ease, and said to myself, “Remember when you used to do that?”

Bette eventually needed medications including one for bladder leakage. I suppose taking a pill was less humiliating than wearing doggie Depends. As for me, I simply try not to sneeze too hard.

Davis developed a hearing loss, just like my husband did several years before. Therefore, repeating myself with increasing intensity became the norm. There was, however, a major difference between Davis and my husband. The dog didn’t keep saying, “What?”

Walks in the park became shorter and slower due to their diminishing endurance, but I found the new, more leisurely pace quite compatible with my own preferred tempo.

There was a certain beauty in sharing our “golden” years with our aging pets, a mellowness that didn’t exist before. As the end grew near, I knew I’d agree to any reasonable treatment that afforded them quality of life, including laser treatments for Bette’s arthritis.

But love them as I did, if there was to be a budget allocation for cosmetic surgery, that belonged to me.

Epilogue: Bette died at 15; Davis, at 16. We now have Sam, a 3-yearold Russell Terrier. The budget for cosmetic surgery remains unused.

EALTH NEWS Hepatitis C & Baby Boomers

In the U.S., approximately 3.5 million people are living with Hepatitis C, a blood-borne virus. It kills more Americans than all other infectious diseases combined, and Baby Boomers – people born from 1945 to 1965 – are five times more likely to have the virus than other adults.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend all Baby Boomers be tested for the disease. Many with the virus do not have symptoms; an estimated 50% don’t know they are infected.

HCV was not discovered until 1989, but it had been spreading undetected within the population for decades. Baby Boomers may have acquired the infection through blood transfusions or other medical procedures or through previous injection drug use.

Newer cases of Hepatitis C can largely be attributed to injection drug use associated with the opioid epidemic.

After someone is infected, symptoms can range from a very mild illness with few or no symptoms to a serious condition requiring hospitalization.

For reasons that are not known, about 20% of

people are able to clear, or get rid of the virus without treatment in the first six months. Unfortunately, the other 80% face a long-term, chronic infection. Over time, chronic HPV can cause liver damage, cirrhosis, liver cancer, and even death. It’s a leading cause of liver cancer and the number one cause of liver transplants.

The good news is, Hepatitis C can be cured.

New treatments have cure rates of nearly 100% and typically only require 8-12 weeks of pill-taking.

Heat-related health dangers for older adults soar during the summer

Older people are at significant increased risk of hyperthermia during the summer months.

Hyperthermia can include heat stroke, heat edema (swelling of ankles and feet when hot), heat syncope (sudden dizziness after exercising in the heat), heat cramps, and heat exhaustion.

Certain factors can increase your risk such as agerelated changes to the skin, poor blood circulation,

inefficient sweat glands, high blood pressure and dehydration. Heart, lung, and kidney diseases as well as being markedly overweight or underweight and/ or drinking alcoholic beverages can make one more susceptible.

Perilous lifestyle factors include living in extremely hot quarters, lack of transportation, overdressing, visiting overcrowded places, and not understanding how to respond to weather conditions.

Older people, particularly those at special risk, should stay indoors on hot and humid days, drink plenty of fluids and wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics. People without fans or air conditioners should go someplace cool such as a senior center, shopping mall, movie theater, or library.

Low income persons having a hard time paying for home cooling and heating costs should contact the National Energy Assistance Referral Service (https://liheapch.acf.hhs.gov/referral.htm), your local Area Agency on Aging (www.n4a.org) senior center, or social service agency for help.

By TERRI BRyCE REEVES TAMPA -- More than 28 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s disease between now and midcentury, and the cost of caring for them will consume nearly 25 percent of Medicare spending in 2040.

“The risk of Alzheimer’s increases with age, and as baby boomers get older, the number of people developing the disease will rise to levels far beyond anything we’ve ever seen before,” said Maria Carrillo, Alzheimer’s Association Chief Science Officer.

Efforts are underway to change the trajectory of Dr. Jerri Edwards Alzheimer’s and other forms of cognitive decline and the University of South Florida is leading the way.

Dr. Jerri Edwards, professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience, and Dr. Jennifer Bugos, associate professor in music education, are currently recruiting for a three-year study which will focus on music training as a cognitive intervention in older adults with and without cognitive impairment.

The study is being funded by a grant of $2.25 million from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging.

Dr. Jennifer Bugos Edwards describes mild cognitive impairment as a condition of being “in-between” normal aging and dementia.

“Not everyone who has mild cognitive impairment gets dementia–some get better–but they are at a higher risk of dementia than older adults who have not reached that stage of cognitive decline,” she said.

The Alzheimer’s Association reports than long-term studies show that as many as 15 to 20 percent of those aged 65 and older may be experiencing mild cognitive decline.

In a prior 10-year-study, Edwards and her team of researchers found that speedprocessing-based training, available in the online program Double Decision Exercise

by Brain HQ, can forestall the onset of dementia.

Co-investigator Bugos says being able to apply research she’s worked on for years to help those in this critical stage is like a dream come true. Her previous research includes pilot studies on the outcomes of music training on certain age groups as well as an ongoing study on those formally diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

“To have the opportunity to see if music may be a cognitive intervention for those at the very beginning stages of mild cognitive impairment – it’s exciting,” she said.

Smoked Salmon and Cucumber Canapés Ingredients: 4 cucumbers 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 4 Tbsp. finely chopped dillweed (plus additional sprigs for garnish) 3 Tbsp. minced onion 6 oz. smoked salmon, cut into strips

Most major rockers of the 1950s longed for a coveted spot on Bandstand with two exceptions: Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson. Neither needed the TV exposure.

American Bandstand featured a soundtrack of mainstream pop and rock songs—no “raunch ‘n’ roll” was allowed. That helped soften parents’ objectives to the “wild” music that their offspring embraced.

Clark had many financial stakes in the records he spun, and with his clout launched the careers of numerous teen idols, often cute ItalianAmerican boys recruited from the nearby South Philadelphia neighborhood and given new names for the stage. Francis Avallone emerged as Frankie Avalon.

Fabiano Anthony Forte became Fabian.

Robert Ridarelli won fame as Bobby Rydell. Ernie Evans, a part-time chicken plucker at a market, became American Bandstand’s first black teen idol as Twist sensation Chubby Checker.

Watched by 20 million teenagers and adults, the show emerged at a time of monumental change in culture and musical tastes, with Clark being a major part of that tectonic shift.

Decades later, Clark told music mogul Joe Smith, “It took all of 20 minutes after we went off the air that first day for us to know we had a monster on our hands.”
